If you want to give yourself fully to God's will, if you want to be spiritled every day of your life, if you're tired of being half-hearted, if you're tired of compromising, and it's no accident that you're watching this right now. I want to show you how to surrender to the precious Holy Spirit. Let's read this verse. 1 Corinthians 1:27.
Instead, God chose the things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. In other words, in our weakness, we find strength. When we yield to the precious Holy Spirit, we invite his influence. It's time to stop living in your own strength. It's time to stop living according to your own will. It's time to stop trying to fight the battles in your own power. There is power untold waiting to be tapped, if you'll simply yield to the Holy Spirit.
So, how does that look in practical everyday life? You hear these concepts, surrender to the Holy Spirit, yield to the Holy Spirit, obey the Holy Spirit. What does this look like in everyday life? I'll show you.
Number one, reverence his word. In Isaiah 66:2, we read, "My hands have made both heaven and earth. They and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken. I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts who tremble at my word." Now notice here that before you can begin to tremble at his word, you have to have a humble and a contrite heart. Far too many believers think that they can go day by day without the influence of the Holy Spirit. That they can make decisions without the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Now, I'm not saying that you don't have autonomy or that you can't exercise free will. I am saying that many believers live their life free of the influence of the Holy Spirit, claiming to be surrendered. They actually just live for themselves.
But here we see that you must be humble and contrite in heart. That means acknowledge your need for him. Acknowledge your brokenness without him. Acknowledge your powerlessness without his hand working on your behalf. And then come to him, ask him for his help, ask him for his guidance. And when you begin to live in that posture of being humble and contrite in heart, then you begin to become one who now trembles at his word.
What does that mean to tremble at his word? It means that when he speaks, you respond. Far too many are just dismissive of the voice of the Holy Spirit. He'll speak something to their heart and instead of acting upon what he's spoken, they battle. They wrestle. They try to reason with God. They try to debate with him. They try to give their list of excuses as if those excuses can protect them from the instructions that God has given to them. Well, let's not debate. Let's not make excuses. Let's instead be responsive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and respond right away.
Sensitivity to the voice of the Holy Spirit isn't just being able to hear him clearly. I mean, you hear Christians brag about this all the time. Oh, I'm so sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. I hear God speaking to me all the time. And that's wonderful. But sensitivity doesn't stop there. Sensitivity isn't just about your ability to clearly hear him, but your willingness to immediately respond when he speaks. Hide his word in your heart. Know his word. Cherish his word. If you don't know what the word says, then you're not going to know what pleases or displeases him.
Surrender to the Holy Spirit isn't an emotion. It's not just an abstract concept. Surrender to the Holy Spirit is obedience. You can't say you're surrendered to the Holy Spirit when you're living in sexual sin. You can't say you're surrendered to the Holy Spirit if you're constantly gossiping about the ones that you supposedly love. You can't say you're surrendered to the Holy Spirit if you're not demonstrating kindness. You can't say you're surrendered to the Holy Spirit if you're very impatient with everyone around you. I'm not talking about perfection. We're all going to make mistakes. But if you live a lifestyle of disobedience, if you neglect operating in the fruit of the Holy Spirit, if you neglect the character of Christ, if you neglect those instructions that the Holy Spirit gives to you, then how can you claim to be walking surrendered to the Holy Spirit? Because you prophesy, because you can pray for the sick, because you can demonstrate power. Well, the word of God is so powerful that power will be demonstrated by the word whether you're living according to it or not. God uses hypocrites all the time, but that doesn't mean you're actually surrendered. That doesn't mean you're actually living in a way that pleases God.
When we live lives that are yielded to the Holy Spirit, the character and the nature of Christ begins to come through. We become responsive to his voice. We avoid sins of commission, that is doing what you know you ought not to do. And we avoid sins of omission, that is not doing what you know you're supposed to do. The Bible says, "He that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin." So maybe the Holy Spirit is saying, "Stop with this action." And because of your own personal preference, because of the cravings of the flesh, you just don't stop. Maybe the Holy Spirit is asking you to start something, to step out in faith, to begin obeying his word in a certain area of your life, and you are withholding that obedience. You're withholding that responsiveness to his voice. All the while saying you're waiting to hear from God. Well, once the Holy Spirit has spoken and the instruction is clear, you need to obey. You need to respond. And it needs to be immediate. Delay is disobedience. Every time you say yes to the Holy Spirit and no to the flesh, you become that much more like Jesus.
Number two, be mindful of his presence. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, "Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself." Okay, a couple things to note here. Your body, that is your physical being. We call it your earth suit, is the temple of the Holy Spirit. He literally physically resides with you who lives in you. Notice here that Paul the Apostle refers to the Holy Spirit as a person. Now, when I say that the Holy Spirit is a person, I don't mean that he's mortal. I don't mean that he's fallible. I don't mean that he's finite. I don't mean that he's human in any way. I simply mean that he is personal. He has a personality. The Holy Spirit has a mind, a will, emotions. He is a person and he dwells in you 24/7. He's with you constantly.
And so when we as believers slow down and we become mindful of his presence, not mindful of the idea that a power is with us, but mindful of the idea that a person is with us, that changes everything. You see, when you look at the Holy Spirit as a power that's with you, you'll want to use it. But when you know that the Holy Spirit is a person who is with you, then you'll say to the Holy Spirit, "Holy Spirit, use me." But we have to be mindful of that presence. We have to be aware of his nearness. We live in such a fast-paced society that I think often we miss the sacred and the spiritual. We're so busy scrolling. We're so busy texting and calling and moving from one thing to the next, one conversation to the next, one responsibility to the next that we often forget to just pause and appreciate the fact that the presence of the Holy Spirit dwells with us.
Well, the Holy Spirit beckons us. He invites us. He calls to us to enter the place of prayer, to enter the place of awareness of his presence. And as we move through the day in such a fast-paced fashion, we neglect his presence. We forget he's with us. I'll put it to you like this. Sadly, we ignore him. He speaks. And it's not that we don't want to hear him, but sometimes when he speaks, we're living lives so fast-paced that we don't even slow down to listen.
What would your life look like if you became aware of the fact that the person of the Holy Spirit dwells with you 24/7? What would it look like if you began to have conversations with him in the car on the way to work or school? What would it look like if you sat down for a meal with friends and family and became aware that the Holy Spirit was with you at that table listening to that conversation and ready to give joy and peace for even that moment? How would this change the way that we face trials, testing, trouble on every side? When things begin to fall apart, do you look to him? How would it be if when you felt like your life was crumbling, disappointment, maybe you didn't meet that goal, maybe you lost that relationship, maybe finances fell apart, maybe you're experiencing a health issue, whatever it may be, how would your life look if you knew that the Holy Spirit was with you in those trials? Because then you could learn to trust him. Then when trials came, you wouldn't say things like, "Well, nobody understands or I'm all alone." Or, "Is this ever going to end?" Instead, you would say, 'Holy Spirit, thank you for your presence. Thank you for walking with me through this trial. Thank you that you've already sorted this out. Help me to be at peace. Help me to be patient even in suffering. Help me to love others even when I'm in pain. Help me to keep faith and proper perspective even when there's room for doubt and I'm not seeing any signs around me that would cause me to have faith.'
How would that look for you if you became aware of the friendship that you have with the Holy Spirit day to day? And in being mindful of his presence, you would become more responsive to his voice. When you begin to surrender, that yieldedness to the precious Holy Spirit makes you a better father, a better parent, makes you a better worker, makes you a better student, makes you a better preacher, makes you a better spouse. That surrender to the Holy Spirit changes every aspect of your nature and you begin to succeed in life. Yes, succeed in life as you surrender.

Number three, live in repentance. This is key. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." There are two very unhealthy responses to sin. Obviously, as believers, we strive for holiness or we surrender to the Holy Spirit in a way that produces holiness. As believers, we ought to desire to be holy even as God is holy. There's no room for sin in the life of the believer. We have to be of that mindset. But you will make mistakes. And so there are two unhealthy ways to respond to those kind of mistakes. At least in my observation, I've seen this.
On one side, they can be so dismissive of sin that they don't even think about it. They say, "Yeah, I messed up, but you know, everyone messes up, so let me just keep moving forward." And it's good that you want to move forward, but is there no grieving or brokenness over wrongdoing? And shouldn't our hearts be broken when we break the Holy Spirit's heart? And shouldn't we sense shame if we do shameful things? I believe that as Christians, we ought to live shame-free lives. But when we sin, the scripture is clear that godly sorrow worketh repentance. There's a moment where sorrow and shame is a part of the process. Now once you've turned from the sin, repented, okay, that's one thing. But we should sense a brokenness over our sin. We should sense the weight of that wrongdoing. We should be sensitive to the darkness of sin as people surrender to the Holy Spirit. But so there's that one extreme where they're just dismissive of the sin, like, "Oh, no big deal. I'll just move on from it." Not even acknowledging how they violated and how they've rebelled against an eternally holy God. And that's unhealthy, obviously.
And then on the other side, there seems to be this despair that many Christians fall into. They make a mistake. They tell themselves things like, "Well, I've lost everything I have with God. Surely the Holy Spirit has left me. Surely I've lost my calling. Surely this was my final mistake and I'll never recover from this." And they just get so stuck in shame that they never move on to repentance. And they don't even want to look at God. They don't even want to talk to God. They don't want to pray. They don't want to read the word. They don't want to go to church. They just kind of retreat into the darkness of that shame, not realizing that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.
Now, look at this here. Notice he is faithful and just. What does that mean? Faithful in that he consistently forgives us and he's faithful to the covenant. And just in that he's justified in forgiving us because of the cross. What Jesus did for you on the cross, that's the justification that you've now received. So, he's consistent to do it because of his covenant, because of his goodness. And he's just, he's right to forgive you because Christ paid the penalty for your sin. And so if we live in that lifestyle of repentance, then we live able to respond to the Holy Spirit. And so those two extremes are unhealthy.
Instead, we have to live in repentance. That is, we have to live in the posture of acknowledging when we've done wrong and also acknowledging that he's made the sacrifice that ultimately pays the penalty for that sin. And we live with soft hearts, tender hearts toward the Spirit. So that when we sin, when we make a mistake, we can sense that pricking of the heart. It's like a sharp spiritual pain. And you go, "Oh, I felt that. I feel convicted for doing that." And then you turn from that, repent, and move forward as opposed to one of those other extremes. So again, you live in that state of repentance. So you live in that continual state of repentance, which is that changed and transformed mind.
Number four, act in faith. Hebrews 11:1 declares, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." In other words, if I can believe for it, it's as good as mine. If I can believe for it in my spirit, I can hold it in my hands. That's how certain faith is. Faith is not necessarily just hope. Faith is confidence in God's word. Faith is that deep inner knowing God will perform on his promises. And so when the Holy Spirit speaks to you, you want to live a surrendered life, it's going to take faith because sometimes the Holy Spirit is going to ask you to do something that makes zero sense. Sometimes the Holy Spirit is going to ask you to do something. Now watch this. This is where it gets really complicated for us, at least emotionally. Sometimes the Holy Spirit's going to ask you to do something. You're going to do what he asks you to do, and then everything is going to seem like it's falling apart. He asks you to start a ministry. Maybe there's going to be some trials. He asked you to cut off some ungodly, toxic people. Maybe now you feel like you're alone and isolated. Maybe he told you to take a step of faith in business or in a marriage or something like that. And then you feel like you just enter uncertainty and chaos, but it's all growing. You can't go wrong when you obey the Holy Spirit.
Now, you need to be sure that it's him. Really, the only difference between faith and foolishness is whether or not the Holy Spirit has spoken. But once you know in your spirit, this is the precious Holy Spirit. This is his instruction to me, you better step out in faith. You can't go wrong. You can't fail. You cannot fail when you're trusting in God. You cannot fail when you're walking in his promises. Yes, it may seem scary. Yes, it may be a little bit confusing at times. Sure, things may seem to be falling apart. I mean, think about Joseph. Joseph was following after the dream that God gave to him and he ends up in a pit, sold into slavery, and then thrown into prison. All because he was following after the dream God gave him. But eventually, he was brought to the palace. Eventually, there was the breakthrough moment. And so, you may feel like afraid to step out and obey the Holy Spirit because you fear what may go wrong, but you need to do it anyway. And maybe you obeyed the Holy Spirit and now it seems that things just aren't clicking the way you thought they would click. That's okay. Keep obeying the Holy Spirit and you will watch as everything comes together.
You want to surrender to the Holy Spirit. You're going to need faith. Father, I pray you would give them the courage to obey the voice of the precious Holy Spirit. Even when things don't make sense, even when it costs them, even when it invites chaos, that obedience to your Holy Spirit, I pray that you would walk them through it. Give them the confidence to know that everything is working out for the good of those that love him. Give them the confidence that you will perform the promises of your word. And so, precious Holy Spirit, as we trust and obey, we thank you in advance for every miracle, every breakthrough, we thank you in advance for drawing us closer to you than ever before and making us more like Jesus than we've ever been. Thank you for the joy of being able to surrender to the Holy Spirit. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray.

And so, if you've been frustrated in your finances, take a step of faith, follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, surrender your finances to him, and watch what he does in your finances. But it begins here. Obedience. There may be that battle within your heart. Should I? Shouldn't I? Or, oh, I'm afraid I might lack here, or what about this bill or that bill? Yes, you be responsible.
