Hi guys. We've got Graham Knight, Eduardo Dolon. Eduardo is the for one of our better word, the mayor of Torrevieja. In this video, we're going to take you around Torrevieja and show you some of the new developments that are coming starting now, last year, and next year, and beyond. Let's go. Yes, done. Okay. Okay.
>> [laughter] [music] >> Hi Bob. Hi Bob. We're at the top end of Aguas Nuevas. You can see La Mata going down towards that way, and it actually comes all the way around here as well. And then you've got Aguas Nuevas, all the new builds.
>> The auditorium and San No, it's not San Jaime's anymore. It's Quirón Hospital just over that way.
>> Yes. Yeah. So, this area here, around about 12 million euros is going to get spent. We've mentioned this before. We'll overlay the top of it and give you a link to that video. They're actually going to build a new park here, and it's going to be absolutely fantastic. It's going to be able to cater for so many people of all ages. There's going to be a cafe and restaurant there, and quite a few other amenities for people to be able to use. And it will have stunning views. Yeah, straight out to the salt lakes at the back.
Let's move on to our next location. We're at Playa de Los Locos in Torrevieja. And the plan here Um and with the investment of around 10 million, 110 million, and the redevelopment project to improve accessibility and create the In fact, what the what the idea is to get rid of the traffic completely. There'll be no traffic along Avenida Alfredo Nobel. The whole area will become pedestrianized. A certain investment of 10 10 million or 10.1 million is there. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, the project will be awarded. The contract will be awarded to the company to uh is [clears throat] to to do the work. Um an integral part of this is especially is access.
>> [clears throat] >> At the moment, there are only two access points where you can walk down onto the beach onto the sand itself. Um but along the whole of the this new pedestrianized area, [clears throat] there will be access ramps permitting access to people of all abilities. Um and the project extends from the roundabout where the 222 Dos >> [clears throat] >> Dos Maderos 222 is all the way to to unite with the uh the existing pedestrianized facade, taking into account the boulevard alignment, and and uniting with the existing uh seafront facade. Uh you may be aware that the area of the 222 when it rains and it rains heavily as it tends to, it's an area where uh it collects flood water, and that area can be particularly flooded. The water comes down Cañete Roden and normally washes out at sea. So, part of this project is a to deal with that problem. Um but at the same time, not [clears throat] just to evacuate the rainwater, but to actually collect it underground so that the gardens the new gardens along the pedestrianized area will be a laminated area beneath them to make use of the the rainwater. This project is also out for tender at the moment, and they should be selecting the winning developers within the next couple of weeks. It's imminent that work will be starting very soon on this area. Incidentally, they've recently managed to dispose of and destroy over 5 tons of illegal merchandise that's been sold in and around Torrevieja areas.
Moving on. Welcome to La Mata. These are the works that are going to be done here on the seafront at La Mata. So, they're renewing all of the walkway, which goes for I don't know how long it goes for, but it goes for a long, long way. All the way over there, which we can't get on the camera. And then here at the square We mentioned this in a video a while back, actually. Here here at the square, they're actually going to be It's a It's sad because it's actually a really nice square, this. But this is all going to be dug up, and there's going to be an underground car park here, which, to be fair, is overdue because if you've ever visited La Mata in the summer season, you will know it's absolutely impossible to find a parking space. There are no car parks. There's only parking on the side of the roads at the moment. However, there is a regular bus service that runs backwards and forwards from Torrevieja town center into La Mata if you chose to do the park and ride, for example. Having said that, they are going to put the plaza back in place. From what I saw in the press release, so you're going to have a car park underneath, but then you're going to have the plaza again. I can't remember when it's going to be, but we'll put that on screen as well, so you know. Just another one to be keeping in mind.
Now, it's time to go to our next location. Next location. This is what used to be the Lloyds Beach Club. Some of you people that have been coming to Torrevieja for a long time might remember it. It's really run down now. Torrevieja are planning to open a number of four-star hotels, which, to be honest, in Torrevieja, it's lacking hotels. There are two different types of tourism in Spain. Torrevieja have concentrated on residential tourism. That's when people are buying properties to use for their holidays. That's residential tourism. Whereas Benidorm, on the other hand, has sort of concentrated on vacational tourism, and that's why there are lots and lots of hotels there. But because such a big investment has been made in Torrevieja in sporting facilities, they're expecting a lot more vacational tourists coming because of the sporting facilities. So, they need hotels. They don't want to be building new hotels, so establishments like this, the Lloyd Club, Mata International Hotel, are being reformed and updated to become four- and five-star hotels. There There are several that are going to be reformed. There's going to be one new hotel on the seafront at Torrevieja in the town center.
>> the seafront, but it's overlooking the new Paseo >> It will Yeah, it's overlooking the new Paseo del Mar, and it will be right next to where the hippie market and the fair is. That will be That's actually Is there already a building there that they're Yeah, so it's not it's not a new build. It's another I think it probably was an apartment block or something like that that's being made into a hotel. I think it's fair to say that Torrevieja Torrevieja. was the the idea when Torrevieja was going through this tourism development, we we went for residential tourism while Benidorm went for vacational tourism. And it worked well. But we found that there is a a need for hotels in Torrevieja to to bring people We're getting about 12 or 13,000 sporting tourists. We need somewhere to put them, but but also to offer the drink and the tourist offer. Um currently, the Lloyd's Club in La Mata, Hotel Internacional, the the Mata Hotel Hotel Berlin on the Cabo Cervera, and the Eden Rock currently are undergoing um refurbishments to um so that they will become three-star or four-star hotels, um newly modernized, uh and also almost immediately, there is a will be a new four-star hotel. Whilst we go back to talking about the Paseo del Mar, the Paseo de la Mata, the the pedestrianized area where the fairground is going to be in the the hippie market. There is a building there that's standing empty at the moment. Uh I think the ground floor of it is the restaurant La Mora. Um that has already been taken and purchased by a company who are in the process or will very, very shortly be converting that into a high-end hotel in that part of the city, four-star hotel again to bring tourism. And in the long-term plan uh for hotels in La Mata and the hippie market. But but that's more in the future. These ones that we're talking about now are immediate. Yes, I mentioned the uh hotels in the Those ones are immediate, the ones that you've seen in the near future. Um Town Hall are working with public and private public and private collaboration uh with to produce more three more hotels, two down in the southern area in La Mata and another one in La Mata in the near future. So, for those of you that said we don't need any hotels in Torrevieja, they're not building new hotels. They're utilizing buildings that are already there that are run down and not being used. And really, that's a great use of something that should be there that should be there anyway. So, this is the Lloyd's Club. Work's already started, by the way. As you can see with the skip here behind us.
>> And as you can probably hear by the machinery behind us, also. It's a Bobcat. What a beautiful day. Yeah. This This is one of the things that lots of you guys ask about all of the time. And it's when and where the new bus station will be uh in Torrevieja. And we're actually stood in it now. We're stood in the area.
>> We're stood in the area. There's been a little bit of confusion. We actually asked I asked Eduardo Delon straight to his face and I've got it on camera. Is there an update on when the bus station moving will start or will be completed? Out towards the other habaneras. The the new bus station which is I'll take care of all and in fact I chance I won't say by chance but immediately next to the park and ride or one of the park and ride areas there. Work is the project is at the moment in hand and finished. It's going out for tender within the early part of next year and work hopefully should start during the course of 2027. Uh basically when is it going to open? Now there are going to be park and ride in Torrevieja. We're expecting to be in place by 2027-2028.
>> Right. Well, what what what Eduardo actually said about the bus station was that it's out for tender at the moment. So, the different companies are putting their bids in to do the work for the bus station and actually be in charge of it. So, work should start on the bus station next year early 2027 and it should be up and running by 2028. So, the new bus station should be in situ here in 2028. Behind us is the civil protection building which which is on the roundabout. The roundabout where habaneras and and Lidl is. You can see it behind us. That that will actually be completely demolished the civil protection building not habaneras and Lidl. And that will be the entrance into the new bus station from that roundabout. So, that's how you'll get into it. Now if we stand here the bus station is going to go from where the civil protection is all the way across towards the roundabout near Torrevieja Florida commercial area. Which we've done lots of things in there in the past. The the rest of the space here will be one of the park and ride car parks and it will have the facility for a thousand cars to park here and then you'll be able to catch a service bus into Torrevieja town center and the beach area. Now the the bus station will also once it's built and up and running they'll be introducing several new lines several new bus lines to different areas and they're going to be um buying I think is it 32 Yeah. new electric hybrid hybrid electric buses um which will have the digital displays on as well so that you it attaches to the app and keeps you up to date on where the buses are. The bus stops will all have the digital display on as well. It's going to be quite a big reformation of the bus service around the Torrevieja area. So, you'll be able to go to the bus stop there'll be um there'll be a screen that tells you what time the next bus is due and um I don't know what else it will tell you. Not sure. You can ask as many questions as you like on any of this that we're going to tell you in the comments but we may not be able to answer them because we've only got the information as we asked. We'll put over the top the information regarding the park and ride and anything else we can do. Park and ride there's going to be I think it was four >> going to be possibly six different zones where you can park and They're they're going to start with four car parks and maybe depending on how much they used increase to six. And there's going to be 3,330 car parking spaces to start with. There are different colored car parks. One is for residents, one is for tourists, another one for visitors.
>> Yes. Um so, depending on which category you fall in fall under depends which car park you'll go on parking. Um and they'll all I would assume take you to the beach area and the seafront uh and the town center.
Moving on. Sports anyone? Not me. Sounds like too much of an indication giving hard work and a heart attack.
>> [laughter] >> Okay, so in the last four years Torrevieja has spent in the region of 20 million euros on improving upgrading and and expanding the the sports facilities here in Torrevieja including racket sports, the football, lots and lots of different um sport activities available. And it actually means that now Torrevieja has some of the best sports facilities in the whole region. And that also means that we are attracting sports tourists to come and visit. Welcome to Torrevieja bus station. So, when the bus station moves to where we've just showed you to its new location you may wonder what's going to happen with this place. Well, Torrevieja town hall intend to buy this building and this area and they're going to demolish it and make it into a green area. It's going to become a park. A park in the center of the city. That's what they're hoping to do at least anyway. Obviously this is a a few years down the line. Well, not that many years down the line. It's going to be a couple of years down the line because as we said earlier the work on the new bus station should start early 2027 and it should be up and running in 2028. So, I would imagine by the time it 2028 gets here this place will be also um would also be being redeveloped. Off we go.
Back to the Paseo del Mar. It's very noisy here so you might not hear us. Luckily we don't need to say very much about the Paseo del Mar because we've already done a full video covering this building and this new leisure complex. And if you look in the description to this video there'll be a link to that video so that you can look at that at your leisure. What we will tell you though is the opening date of this of the main complex itself which is brand new fantastic leisure center. It's only got restaurants and cinema and bowling that sort of thing and some fantastic views. Yeah, it's a leisure center and not a commercial center. So, there won't be any shops. If you want shops that's what Torrevieja town center's for. The opening date is It's the 26th of May. And we're going to miss the opening. We're going to miss the inauguration. So, the 26th of May opening the fair and the hippy market will follow later in the year. Part of the which relates to the restaurants and the leisure area is planned to be open on the 26th of May next month. But most certainly this is the great number of the restaurants have already started to well, they've already put in their own infrastructure there as well. But equally the whole area from the Paseo del Mar buildings in themselves all the way to the facade of the buildings in all of the Paseo de la Libertad that actually de Gabriel Miró the whole area is to become pedestrianized. So, the traffic will be diverted in a different direction up and out out to Ramón Gallud the whole area will be pedestrianized which will inevitably open it up to bring back the hippy market uh the or evening market is known the hippy market. Um but instead of being in that sort of narrow passage way of wooden buildings that it was before and still is on the near valley these new stalls or casetas have been designed they they're being blocks of four or six or two depending all over this distinctively massive pedestrianized area. And inevitably the shape of them and the design is aimed at reflecting uh salt crystals. So, rather large ones but but that's the idea and you can see some of those in the in the far left picture there. Also the fairground will be returning tongue in cheek uh on the 1st of June
>> [laughter] >> about um but with a with a permanent permanent situation within the more or less where it was before. We've already spoken about hotels. If Andy spins the camera round the hotel the new hotel in Torrevieja will be one of the buildings that you can see and we're not sure which one but one of the buildings that you can see opposite there which will be at the side of the hippy market and the fairground. That is where the new hotel will be. Not sure which one it is.
Moving on. Information about the salt lakes. It's still work in progress. They're still having discussions and they are still trying to thrash things out.
>> plan. The salt lakes the working salt lakes in Torrevieja the pink lake. You can get you can get on and see that there. It's run by a it's actually run by a French company. So, Torrevieja town hall are in negotiations with the French company at the moment to try and come up with a plan to utilize part of the area for tourism. Now the salt lake is a protected piece of land. It's protected not not by the French people that own it but it's protected by the government. So, you are not allowed to build any sort of structure around the salt lake and you are not allowed to bathe in the salt lake. It is prohibited. It's protected and that's just not allowed. Having said that, there are buildings that have been uh abandoned since the 1950s.
>> Yeah, so there there are structures already there. They're looking at trying to reutilize those to turn it into uh we'll put the name in the brackets.
>> a balneotherapy or something like that? Or the balneotherapy or the thalassotherapy or It's It begins with B. Yeah, so So, what they're going to do is the structures that are already there, they're going to refurbish them and make them into a sort of a spa area that specializes in this therapy that we can't say. And also, as I've just said, it's it's um prohibited to bathe in the salt lakes, but
>> It's not set in stone yet, so it may not happen.
>> And and it could be sort of 6 to 8 years away, but that's That This is a plan in the future. associations.
Next. This is the current location of the tourist information office here in Torrevieja. Now, that is going to change. Here we have Eras de la Sal. This is getting renovated. The The Eras de la Sal, if you didn't know, is an area that's a little bit It's got an auditorium in it. So, they have music concerts in there and and things like that. We actually went to see The Jacksons perform there and it was great.
>> It was the proper Jacksons, not Not a rip-off Jacksons.
>> [laughter] >> Not fake Jacksons.
>> However, it's not very big. It's not a It's not a massive um venue. But, there are plans. Yes. So, the Eras de la Sal's going to be rejuvenated, renovated, expanded. You're going to be able to walk all the way through to the beach on the other side of the marina there. Yeah, because at the moment you have to walk around the road to get to the marina international, but what they're going to do is they're going to make a pedestrianized area from the Eras de la Sal so that you can walk along the seafront rather than round the road to get to the marina international and the beach at the other side of it. Now, the Eras de la Sal, if you didn't know, is the old historical salt works, which is where the salt used to come in and be shipped all over the world. And the jetty, at least they could bring it on horse and cart. The jetty or the marina pier is actually at the side of the Paseo del Mar.
>> called the the Juan Illinguez. So, they're going to be pedestrianizing it all and they're going to build a big structure that looks like mounds of salt, as you see when you're driving along the road when you're driving in and out of Torrevieja, and that those mounds of salt-looking buildings underneath those will be, amongst other things, the museum of salt.
>> [music] >> There you go. Yeah. Roughly something like that. And here you can see
>> [music] >> This is all the different development that's happening. This is what we're going to talk about now, the tourist information office. Just showing you the current location of that and we're going to show you where the new location will be in the not too distant future.
>> [music] >> That's what the mounds are going to look like with the the museum underneath. And and other things, but this is what the Eras de la Sal will look like. And the auditorium will have um will be much bigger so that it it can fit more people in, so that means that the concerts and things that they have can be [music] on a larger scale. You can see the building there
>> [music] >> that has been worked on. They've saved the They've saved the fascia of the building to
>> The Yeah, [music] to keep its its quaint and historic feature. That was actually an ice factory. And when was that dating back to the 1770s, something like that? They said Yeah, the 17 1777, I think it said,
>> [music] >> that that used to be an ice factory. And now that is going to be the tourist information office here in
>> Among other things. There's going to be some other offices there as
Now, on our way to [music] the next location that we're going to show you, we'll just tell you a little bit about the university that's going to be opening here in Torrevieja in September. [music] It's got space for 430 pupils. It's
>> Students. Students, sorry. It's working in conjunction with [music] the University of Elche, the University of Alicante, and the Open University here in Spain. It's going to be covering tourism and teacher training, but it's also going to have places for students of 60 years and over. And I think this might be the building here I think you might be right. Possibly. Downstairs is going to be the new Agamed offices, but the upper floors are all going to be the university. There it is. Yeah, I think it is that one. Yes. Let's keep going. It is ridiculous to think about the size of Torrevieja and up until now we've had no university here. This excites us so much.
>> [laughter] >> If you know us, you know it's all about the food, right? This is the location of the old municipal market in the center of Torrevieja and it's being completely refurbished. If any of you have ever visited Central Market in Valencia or Central Market in Alicante, imagine that here in Torrevieja. There are nine stalls, booths, stands, shops that are existing ones that have been in there and were in there before they closed it for the refurb. They are butchers, bakers, fruit and veg sales people. There are going to be 21 stalls in total inside there. The rest are going to be gastro bars to enjoy Spanish fare. It's actually being run by the company that runs the Central Market in Murcia. So, if any of you have ever visited that, we've not, then it's going to be very similar to that and we cannot wait for it to be opened later this year. There's another one actually in Madrid, which we did go to. It's going to be like that one as well.
>> Yeah. Can be a little bit pricey, but it's definitely worth a visit as a treat just to absorb the atmosphere because As a treat, we'll be in there every flipping weekend.
>> but the atmosphere inside these markets is something different altogether and you've got to try it at least once when you're visiting Spain. As you can see, there are lots of developments happening here in Torrevieja. So, if you own a place in Torrevieja, it can only benefit you with the facilities available. If you're going to rent out, it can only make it more appealing and if you're going to sell, get in touch with us because we're estate agents. Legal ones as well.
>> Yes. It's not a case of We're not fly-by-nights. We do all sorts of videos from Torrevieja, from our travels around Spain, discovering Spain, also not just Spain. We've done various trips around Europe, Thailand, and America. So, if that sort of thing floats your boat or just basically some good home cooking, Yeah, we do lots of cooking and lots of eating. Oh, definitely. It's all about the food, right?
