Hey guys, Dr. Morris, injury experts.
So, first game back, coming back from his hamstring strain after he missed three weeks, Mike Evans was going for a bomb as we see on this play right here. And he lands really hard on the turf. Now, you can see his head kind of lands and and his shoulder lands really hard. It I think it was his right shoulder. Now, when you see him try to get up, he doesn't get up and he looks groggy and and kind of out of it. So, the concussion was relatively obvious.
But sometimes what happens is with that much energy and force when you suffer a concussion, you don't have the ability to slow down and brace yourself, meaning put your hands out in front of you. So, what happens is all of that energy that you were just running and trying to dive and catch the ball runs straight into the turf. And unfortunately, the weakest bone and the last bone to fuse is the clavicle, also known as the collarbone. This one right here.
Now the collar bone is important because it stabilizes both the sternum and the AC joint. So it's the stabilizer for the upper part of the shoulder and chest. Now he unfortunately fractured this. Now there's three types of relatively straightforward fractures here. By far the most common is the middle right here. Now it can be pointed upwards, it can be relatively straight or it can actually point downwards. Now the problem with downwards is it can actually puncture the lung. It looks like this. Now if it points upwards sometimes it can even go through the skin. Rare but it can technically happen.
Now, even more concerning is if the fracture was more medially at the sternum and you can actually have a dislocation or fracture dislocation right here. That is similar to what happened with Hollywood Brown last year. And finally, you can have a fracture towards the AC joint. And that traditionally causes a lot of issues especially if the fracture goes underneath the AC or behind it that becomes a combination of AC sprain as well as a significant fracture.
Now, traditionally these depending on the location, the most common one is midbody, these often times will heal on their own, but in a professional sport like this, it's high risk to not have it structurally repaired. That's what happened with Jaden Reed earlier this year. For reference, Aaron Rogers not only fractured one clavicle, but actually both, and he has surgery and plates on both. Now, traditionally, you'd see a plate and screws, and traditionally these take about six to eight weeks to come back, depending on specifics.
Now, they didn't put him on IR earlier in the year, which means that he's eligible to go on IR now. If he went on IR, came off, and then had to go back on again, his season would be over. So, they would have to carry him on the active roster. Since that's not the case, he can technically be placed on IR. So that means he's out a minimum of four weeks, but realistically probably six to eight. Now, if he returns before early December, I will be super impressed.
But nonetheless, this ends one of the most unbelievable streaks I've ever seen in the NFL where he had a thousand yards receiving every season since he was drafted, which is bananas just due to longevity. Even if you only have to average 60, 70, 80 yards a game. Doing that every game for your entire career basically means you can't miss more than three or four games a season. It's just not possible to pull it off similar to how he did it last year. Amecha Ibuka got lucky and had a very very mild hamstring tweak and ended up playing pretty good tonight. But unfortunately Chris Godwins is super banged up with his left ankle injury secondary to his last injury from last year.
So this is a huge deal for Baker Mayfield for the for the Tampa Bay Bucks. And we'll have to see probably Tez Johnson ends up uh joining and kind of boosting up. We'll have to see if Jaylen McMillan is ever ready to return from his neck injury. But significant, unfortunately, relatively season ending, at least the fantasy season ending injury for Mike Evans, uh, heading into week eight. This is going to be very tough, unfortunately.
I'll give you more information when we have it, but as of right now, I'm expecting him to undergo surgery, and he had a significant concussion as well. You could see that he didn't even brace his arm, which is classic for a fracture because of how uh concussed he was. So, uh the concussion may take several weeks to clear, but at this point, it's moot because he needs surgery. I'll give you more when we have more.
