And here's the hard truth. Not everyone around you is being led by the Holy Spirit. Some people are unknowingly being used by something darker. That doesn't mean they're evil. Spinning heads, growling voices, dramatic exorcisms. That's Hollywood theology, not biblical truth. The devil isn't always loud. He's strategic, subtle. In fact, the most effective demonic activity happens without a scream. It happens to influence small compromises, distorted truths, unchecked emotions, and open doors in the heart. That's how demons work in everyday people. Not just the visibly wicked, but even the kind, the hurting, the religious, and yes, even the well-meaning.
We need to pause and get this straight. Possession is full control. When a demon inhabits a person complete, it's rare, but influence is constant. First, look for confusion. The Bible says God is not the author of confusion. 1 Corinthians 14:33. One of the most overlooked signs. Spiritual dullness or deadness. You share something powerful God showed you and they respond with sarcasm, indifference, or silence. It's like they're unable to perceive or respond to spiritual truth. That's often a sign of a hardened heart or worse, a spiritual block caused by demonic interference.
And finally, anti-God language or behavior. It may not be overt blasphemy. Sometimes it sounds like, "Does God really care about that?" or "I think you're taking this Jesus thing too seriously." Sounds familiar. That's almost the exact language the serpent used in the garden. Doubt disguised as casual conversation.
Let me be clear. Recognizing these signs doesn't give you permission to attack the person. It's not about turning on people. It's about turning to God with what you're discerning. The goal is not accusation. It's intercession. Not canceling people, but confronting the spiritual influence working through them. You cannot fight spiritual battles with natural responses. Number three, spiritual discernment. The gift we're not using enough. One of the most powerful weapons God has given the believer is the gift we ignore the most. Discernment. It's not a personality trait. It's not being intuitive or naturally suspicious. Spiritual discernment is a gift from the Holy Spirit. And you're going to have moments like that, moments when someone's concern for you isn't coming from the Holy Spirit. It's fear, control, or jealousy wearing a caring disguise. And if you don't have discernment, you'll fall into the trap of obeying human emotion over divine instruction.
Here's how you develop discernment. Stay close to the word. Stay sensitive to the spirit. Stay separated from sin. Discernment grows in environments where you're seeking God more than the approval of people. Make this personal. Ask yourself, why does this conversation leave me unsettled? Is this person leading me toward truth or away from it? Does this align with what God already told me?
Spiritual discernment will save your calling. It will protect your peace and it will help you stop confusing demonic influence for human struggle. You're not being judgmental. You're being spiritually awake. And in this generation, awake people are dangerous to darkness.
Number four, the enemy uses familiar faces. This one's going to hurt, but it needs to be said. Satan will almost always use someone close to you, not because they're evil, but because they're accessible. The enemy's most effective attacks don't come from obvious enemies. They come from people you trust, love, and let your guard down around: your spouse, your sibling, your best friend, your leader. That's why betrayal hurts more than battle because it comes from within the walls.
Let's look at scripture. Judas was close enough to kiss Jesus. Think about that. The Son of God wasn't betrayed by a stranger, but by someone who walked with him, ate with him, saw miracles, and still opened the door to Satan. Luke 22:3. Number five, silencing demonic influence through the word. There's a moment in the Gospel of Mark where Jesus is teaching in the synagogue and a man with an unclean spirit suddenly cries out. Jesus doesn't start a debate. He doesn't flinch. He doesn't make a scene. He simply says, "Be quiet. Come out of him." and the demon leaves. Mark 1:25. No theatrics, just authority.
Now, hear me. That same authority Jesus walked in, if His Spirit lives in you, you carry that authority. But here's the catch. Authority only works when you actually use it. Let me give you the backstory. A father brings his tormented son to Jesus' disciples. They try to cast the demon out and fail. Jesus steps in, rebukes the spirit, and sets the boy free. Later, the disciples ask, "Why couldn't we do it?" And Jesus responds with that line. "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting." That's a clue for us. It might be time to add fasting to your fight. Even Jesus, the Son of God, fasted before entering ministry. That wasn't weakness. That was warfare preparation. You don't fast to earn power. You fast to access the power that's already yours in Christ. You fast to weaken your flesh and strengthen your spirit. You fast to shut down distractions and turn up discernment.
Prayer and fasting don't just remove demons. They remove your own blockages: fear, doubt, pride, confusion, so you can operate in the full authority of the Holy Spirit. If you've been facing stubborn resistance, constant setbacks, spiritual numbness, or repeated demonic attacks through people around you, prayer and fasting might be your missing weapon. God hasn't gone silent. He's waiting for you to step into a deeper level of warfare. And when you do, the darkness that once laughed at your prayers will start to tremble. Because a believer who fasts and prays with purity, faith, and boldness is unstoppable.
Number seven, living in authority, not fear. Let's be clear. If you belong to Jesus, you are not a victim of darkness. You are a threat to it. But the sad reality, too many believers walk around afraid. Afraid of demons, afraid of people under demonic influence, afraid to confront, afraid to speak, afraid to take a stand. But fear has no place in a Spirit-filled believer because you don't just carry light, you carry authority. And if you don't walk in it, the enemy will gladly take ground you were meant to claim.
Let's go back to the word. In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you." That's not poetry. That's a promise. Authority isn't just something Jesus had. It's something he gave to those who follow him. Ephesians 2:6 says, "We've been raised up with Christ and seated with him in heavenly places." That means you're not praying from earth trying to get heaven's attention. You're praying from heaven's perspective, backed by its power.
But authority doesn't just show up in your feelings. It shows up in your position, in your identity. If the enemy can keep you doubting who you are, he can keep you from using what you've been given. Let's be real. Demons don't care about how many sermons you've watched or how long you've been in church. They recognize authority. And authority is built in the secret place. It's fed by obedience. It's strengthened through prayer. And it's activated through boldness.
Remember in Acts 19, the seven sons of Sceva tried to cast out demons by saying, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, but the demons responded, 'Jesus I know.' Paul I know, but who are you?" Acts 19:15. And they got attacked not because they used the wrong words, but because they had no authority to back them up. That's why this isn't about performance. It's about position.
If you are in Christ, you're not a spiritual beggar hoping the devil leaves you alone. You are an ambassador of the kingdom. You are a temple of the Holy Spirit. You are covered by the blood of Jesus. You are armed with a word. You are clothed in righteousness. And when you speak, darkness listens. But you can't walk in authority if you're living in compromise. You can't silence demons if you're entertaining them. Authority demands alignment. You've got to be under the rule of the King to operate in the power of the kingdom.
So, how do you live in authority?
Stay armored. Ephesians 6 outlines your spiritual armor. Put it on every day. Don't walk into battle half-dressed.
Stay obedient. Authority flows through those who obey the commander. If the word says it, do it.
Stay filled. Don't rely on a Sunday refill. Stay in the presence of God. Worship, pray, fast, listen.
Stay bold. The righteous are as bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1. Speak truth even when it's uncomfortable.
Stay loving. Authority without love becomes arrogance. Jesus walked in perfect power and perfect compassion.
The devil fears one thing more than anything else. A believer who knows who they are, knows what they carry, and refuses to back down. That can be you, not just someday, now. Because the truth is this. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you. So when demonic influence shows up around you, you don't shrink. You shine, you speak, you command, you war in the spirit, and you win. You weren't born to be spiritually passive. You were reborn to be a warrior. So rise up, stand firm, speak the word, and live every day like someone who knows: "I walk in the authority of the King of Kings."
