It has pronounced antiseptic, keratoplastic, drying, and antiparasitic properties. It is an excellent remedy for relieving inflammation and pain. External application of birch tar can relieve itching and reduce redness. In case of infiltrates, it can have a resorptive effect.
The second component of Vishnevsky ointment is castor oil. The beneficial properties of castor oil are ensured by the presence of a number of fatty acids, such as stearic, linoleic, ricinoleic, palmitic, and oleic. Castor oil also contains a lot of vitamin E – tocopherol. It not only has an anti-inflammatory effect but is also a powerful natural antioxidant. It is responsible for the cell regeneration process.
Also, Vishnevsky liniment contains xeroform. This is a derivative of carbolic acid and the metal bismuth. It has a pronounced antimicrobial effect on inflamed areas. Xeroform, a drying, astringent, and disinfecting salt, is used to treat lesions on mucous membranes and skin inflammations. The effect of using the ointment is due to the bactericidal influence of the substance on pathogenic microflora. Their ability to bind to cell membranes is disrupted. The ointment applied under a bandage should act for at least 6 hours continuously for maximum effect. For these purposes, the liniment is applied overnight for several days. It is recommended to change the bandage every 6-8 hours.
2. Removal of corns on the feet. Vishnevsky ointment is a first-aid remedy for treating newly formed soft, watery corns. The ointment is especially effective for open corns for wound healing. A small amount of liquid ointment is squeezed onto a gauze napkin folded several times and applied to the wound. The bandage is well fixed and left on the affected skin area for 2-6 hours.
3. Getting rid of pimples. Vishnevsky liniment is an excellent remedy for drawing pus from wound surfaces. The ointment's property is so pronounced that it allows you to get rid of pus even in deep pimples filled with purulent exudate. This can provoke the development of pathogenic microorganisms and intensify the inflammatory process. Proper use of the remedy does not cause side effects. It is important to avoid direct contact of Vishnevsky liniment with mucous membranes and prevent the substance from getting into the eyes. Prolonged use of the ointment can lead to skin peeling and itching. In such cases, it is recommended to discontinue the use of the ointment.
