[Music] Sesame Street love the Earth. Well, here we are, Bear Scouts. It's Bear National Park. Wow, wow! Look at this. This is so cool. Yeah, this sure is different than Sesame Street. Yeah, and it's so beautiful. Yep, and it's a safe place for us to explore and perfect for bird watching. So, uh, Papa Bear, what is this bird that we're supposed to be looking for? Well, I'm glad you asked, son. It's the Blue-Feathered Swallowing Swallow. Wow, if you can spot it out here in the wilderness, you earn a bird watching badge. Well, all, all we need is one more badge, then we can move up from Bear Scouts to Grizzly Scouts. Yeah! All right, well, what are we waiting for, Scouts? Let's look for that bird. Okay, where's [Music] the? Hey, you know, I, I don't see it anywhere. Yeah, me neither. Well, Elmo sees some really pretty leaves. Oh, yeah, look, look, look, look at those yellow ones. Wow, that's cool. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, look at this. Check out this leaf. Wow! Oh, that's a beauty, son. Look at all those colors. Yeah, yellow and green and red and orange, all in one leaf. Yeah. Oh, oh, I love the smell of autumn leaves. You know, they just smell so, so autumn-y. Yeah, yeah. And you know what? I love the crunchy sounds the leaves make when we walk through them. Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch. That's good crunching, Scouts. But what else do you notice? Oh, Elmo almost smells flowers. [Music] Oh, hey, wait, wait, wait. I can hear quick chirping. Oh, yeah, yeah. And I see rocks. Big ones and small ones. And that... hey, he's a weird sound. What was that? I don't know. Uh, that would be my tummy. I'm a we bit hungry. Okay, son, you, you can have your snack soon, but first, let's go find a place to set up and look for the Blue-Feathered Swallow and Swallow. Papa Bear, when you say soon, do you mean like soon soon, or like late-o soon? Boy, Elmo, I hope we really see that bird. Oh, don't worry, Zoe. I'm sure we'll find it soon. Yeah, soon. [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Soon. Tweet, tweet, tweet. We live in a city with lots of big buildings, but in the middle of the city, there's a park filled with lots of animals. My name is Ranger Rosanne, and I want to welcome you to Prospect Park. What is a park ranger? Oh, I know. A park ranger is someone who takes care of animals. Okay, good. A park ranger is the one who takes care of the park. Okay, we're going to be detectives today, right? Is everybody ready to be a detective? Okay, you're going to help us find some animals, right? Let's name some of the animals. Owl. An owl. A raccoon. A squirrel. Squirrel. A duckling. We'll see. Fish. Tadpoles in the pond. Chipmunk. Robins. Yeah. Go about finding these [Music] animals. You got to do what? And what do we have to do? See, you got to look. You have to use your eyes and look for what? Clues. Clues all over. Who lives in the grass? Frogs. Frog. Tadpoles. Everything is hiding. But I hear the birds. Listen. Do you hear them? We're looking for clues. Who's going to find me something up here? Here, come on. Snake skin. This, this is not. Yes, it is. Snake skin. It is snake. Do you have snake? Yeah, it is. We have snakes here. Snake skin. Snake skin. It feels like plastic. Like plastic? Yeah. How do we get the snake skin? When it gets small for the snake, it grows new skin. It gets new skin underneath. [Music] Oh, look. It. Okay, okay. Let's look at this turtle. This is a red-eared slider, and they live in the pond, and his legs go all the way in when he's afraid. Okay, we're going to set him free. Say goodbye. Bye. He's going to head towards the water. There he goes. Look at that white bird. He's a great egret. Oh, look at him fly. Look at those wings. Ah, what's there? Everybody look carefully because you have to use your eyes. What's over there? Don't go too close. Don't go too [Music] close. Hey. [Music] We looked and listened and found clues and a lot of animals. We're nature detectives. Keep your eyes open, Bear Scouts. The Blue-Feathered Swallow and Swallow could be nearby. Oh, check out the butterfly. Oh, yeah. Its wings are so colorful. Well, birds aren't the only critters that live in this park. Oh, what about frogs? Oh, yeah, sure. What about bunny rabbits? Uh-huh. Oh, yeah. Oh, probably. What about dinosaurs? Well, maybe a long time ago. Oh, yeah. That when Ol' Bear hit the spot. I think so. Did you guys see something? Excuse me. Whoa, settle, settle. No cause for alarm. Does this belong to one of you? Oh, look. It's a cute little squirrel. A cute little hat. This is a park ranger hat, ma'am. Regulation uniform. The name is Squirrel. Park Ranger Squirrel. Welcome to Bear National Park. Now, did one of you drop this wrapper on the ground? Uh, yeah, that would be me. So, uh, sir, it is park policy that all trash must be disposed of properly. Huh? What? Well, he's saying you shouldn't litter. Son, you can't just throw your trash on the ground. Yeah, but, uh, you know, it was just one little thing. I mean, yes, sir, I am sure that is what everyone thought when they did this. Oh, no. There's trash everywhere. What a mess. Are you aware, sir, that this park is where many animals live and find their food? It is very important to keep it clean for the animals, sir, and for the natural beauty of the park. Well, I, I am very sorry, Ranger Squirrel. I, I didn't realize. Well, Bear Scouts, what do you think we can do about this situation? Well, I, I for one, am not going to litter ever again. Like, ever. That is excellent news, sir. Well, maybe we could do something right now, like, um, we could clean this whole place up. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's pick up all the [Applause] trash. No one ever does. Ma'am, please do not throw all that trash away. Some of it can be recycled. Re-recycled? That means it can be taken somewhere and used to make something new. Don't joke me. I'm serious. It's true. See this plastic water bottle? Well, it can be recycled and made into a, maybe a ball or a doll or even a whole new water bottle. Wow, really? Can everything here be recycled? Lots of cans, sir. Uh, bottles, uh, plastics, paper. You just have to put them into the right recycling containers. We'll be sure to do that. Thank you, sir. Wait, Papa Bear, you bet you, son. Come [Music] on. I used to be a bottle of soda pop, full of dust and all shipped to. But then I was saved to be recycled. That means being turned to something new. They took me, soaked me, washed me around, peeled off my labels, melted me down. Yes, I once was a bottle of soda pop. Now I'm a cookie jar with a top. Recycle, recycle. I have been recycled. I used to think that I was through. But now I'm back to something [Music] new. I used to be a worn-out plastic jar. I was feeling sad and blue. But then I was saved to be recycled. That means being turned to something new. Yeah, they took me, soaked me, washed me all around, peeled up my labels, melted me down. Yes, I once used to be a plastic jar. Now I'm a part of a new toy car. Recycled, recycled. I have been recycled. I used to think that I was through. But now I'm back at something [Music] new. Some things can be used again to make new things. Like my comic book. First, we stack it up, tie it up, and load it in the wagon and take it to the recycling center. [Music] Then they take it to the [Music] mill and shake it and soak it and stir it, wash it, press it, dry it, and roll it and cut it into clean white pieces of paper like this [Music] one. Three little jars, all sparkling and clean, came down the line from the glass machine at the glass factory. They all went out to be filled to the top with so much mayonnaise, you'd think they would pop. At the mayonnaise factory, the three little jars, along with many, many more, went off on a truck to the grocery store not far from here. One by one, the jars of mayonnaise went home with three different families to make sandwiches. One was emptied fast, a couple emptied slow. Three empty jars. Now, this one isn't easy. Where will they go? All three could have gone right in the trash pail with the papers, the pop cans, and yesterday's mail. But instead, and this is much better, they all got washed, all sparkling clean, so all three jars could be used again. One was filled with water up to the brim and was used by a girl to put tadpoles in. She took it to school. Number two gets used again and again. A boy put a hole in the top. He puts pennies in. Number three, I save for last. It's my favorite, you know. It was taken to the place where used glass things go to be recycled. Recycling is when you take a jar, once you're done with it, to people who can take it to a place where they can make it into a new one at the glass factory. Sure glad I brought these moist towelettes. Oh, what are you going to draw, Baby Bear? A picture of the Blue-Feathered Swallowing Swallow as soon as we see it. Oh, good idea, Baby Bear. Yeah, but, uh, until then, I got to draw something else here. I mean, look at this. The blank page is just staring at me, crying out for my artistic expression. Oh, well, um, why didn't you draw the trees? Hey, that's a great idea. Yeah, I can use lots of the colors in my crayon box drawing those beauties. The trees are colorful and important, too, you know why? 'Cause animals live in the trees. That's right. Yeah, and on a hot day, you can sit under a tree and have it made in the shade. Yep. Trees do keep us cool, and some trees even give us food to eat. Oh, yeah, apples come from trees, and pears too, and bananas. You got it. And trees help keep our air clean, too. Wow, I didn't know trees could do so much. He does. Do you know why dogs love trees? Um, I'm afraid to ask. Why? Because their barks are really rough. Yeah, that's funny. That's a good one, Elmo. Funny. Oh, no. Oh, no. I ruined the drawing. Oh, well, I better start again. Just a minute, sir. Oh, man, we got to put a bell on you. Uh, sir, I noticed that you only used one side of that paper. Are you aware, sir, that there is another side of that paper you could draw on? Well, yeah, I'm, I'm aware of that, but, you know, why, I've got, I've got more paper right here on my sketchpad. Sir, do you know where paper comes from? The star? Before that, sir? No clue. Paper comes from trees, sir. Really? You know that? That's right. Trees are cut down and made into paper. Wow, I, I did not know that. If we can save paper, sir, we can save trees. Thank you, and have a nice day. Wow, he is just chock-full of helpful hints, isn't he? But I tell you now, I am going to use every square inch of this paper. That's the spirit. It's not just about paper. We all need to reuse as many things as we can. Yeah, yeah. You know what? Huh? You know why? Uh, you know why dogs love trees? No. Because their barks are really rough. What? I'm, we're using the joke, Baby Bear. All right. [Laughter] [Music] Wow. When you bring a bag home from the grocery store and you've taken all the groceries out, try to get that bag to work at least once more. Well, that is what reusing is all about. Once is not enough. Once is not [Applause] enough. Once is not enough to use. If you have a t-shirt full of holes and rips, take it off, but don't throw it away. You can use it to tidy up your spills and drips. You save a lot of paper towels. Each day is not enough. Is not enough. Is not enough to use stuff before you throw them out. Wouldn't it be nice if you could find a way to use things? Do not throw away your peanut butter jar or the empty carton from your juice. Simply use your head and show how smart you are. But give them at least one more use. Is not enough. Is not enough. Is not enough to use. One more time. Is not enough. Is not enough. Is not enough to [Applause] use. All over the world, people use things more than once instead of just throwing them away. It's called reusing. In a market in India, this man wraps the things he sells in pieces of old newspaper. And this man uses, uses tape from an old music cassette to tie pieces of a plant together. In Thailand, this man carries water home from the village well in some cleaned-out old plastic pails, while his wife cooks dinner on a wood stove she made from old metal cans. In my playground, we made an old tire into a swing. This girl makes sure she uses both sides of her paper to draw or write on. People in many countries use things over and over instead of just throwing them away. That's reusing. Can you think of ways to reuse the things you throw [Music] [Applause] away? When I'm done with my cereal, there's something I can do. I could use a box of something else. Make something new. I can cut a pair of windows and maybe out a door. If we had a few more boxes, we could do more. Reuse it. I can stack it. I can it. I can glue it down. The box can be a house in another part of town. Keep on making buildings. Let's go with the flow. The town will be a city. We can watch it grow. Use it. You can do it by yourself. You can do it with a friend. There's lots of things we throw away that we can use again. When I finished with the carton, I can make a tower so tall. Put it down right over here. Make sure it doesn't fall. Reuse it. Reuse it. Putting all the parts together, I can make a car driving down the highway. Don't go too far. Some used-up rolls in a row make a bridge across the river. We can go, go, go. Reuse it. When you've got an empty box and you don't know what to do, just use a box or something else. Make something new. Saving stuff to use again. That's what this rap's about. It's all about reusing it. So don't throw it out. Reuse it. Reuse it. Reuse it. [Music] Where's that bird? Where's that bird already? Well, I was beginning to think we'll never see the Blue-Feathered Swallow and Swallow. Yeah, and if we don't, we won't earn our bird watching badges, and we won't become Grizzly Scouts. Yeah, and for a bear like me, that would be quite an ironic twist of fate. Hey, why don't we try a bird call? Maybe that will get it to come. But what bird call? Well, the Blue-Feathered Swallow and Swallow sounds like this. Tweet, tweet, tweet. Gulp. Hey, I get it. You got the plants, you got your animals, you got your people. Yes, sir. So, so Elmo should only use water when he needs it, and no more. Well, my work here is done. Oh, um, have a nice day. What lets us wash our hands and feet? Clean, clear water to swim or drink or plant a seed. The one thing that we really need is is clean, clear water. Water, water, water, water. Without it, think how hot and dry and thirsty you would be. You'd never see a flower, and you'd never see a tree. There'd be no ducks or fish or cows or me. Know you or me. Without water, water, water, clean, clear water. Water, water, water, water, water. Yes, water means so much that we have got to use it carefully. Don't waste water. Water, water, water, water. When cleaning hands or teeth, be smart. Turn off that faucet. Do your part. Don't waste water. Water, water, water, water. And if you got a drippy leak in your shower or your sink, tell your folks to get it fixed. Hey, people, stop and think. 'Cause once a drop goes down the drain, it's kind of hard to drink. Save water. Well, it seems to me that you Scouts learned so much out here that you all deserve a special badge for today. One just like this one. Wow, that's great. What is that? It's a Love the Earth Badge.
