The Secret to Why Google Glass Failed

The example I always give is Google Glass. Give up on ideas too soon because they fail to realize that for any new behavior to take hold in a market is a matter of years. It's never instantaneous.

Even things as extremely useful as the mobile phone, I'm old enough to remember fairly wealthy friends saying, "Why would I want to make a phone call on the street?" And so one thing I think that happens is that a lot of businesses give up because they simply lack the patience to actually wait for the thing to succeed.

And another thing I think marketers know, which is that the more channels through which you sell, the more people you will sell to and the more frequently you will sell to them. What tends to happen in the finance function is they try and force all their customers through the lowest cost to serve channel online, hiding the phone number because it fulfills their idea of perfect efficiency. What they're not seeing is the sales they're losing on account of their obsession with selling efficiently.
