Barbara Hepworth came from the cool gray North, seeking to find herself in Cornwall and Cornwall in herself. A figure in the landscape, she came to St. Ives and set up wood and stone in a warm-colored garden, high above the town, with sunlight and leaves, flowers and sliding shadows. She has walls about her and the sea beyond them. Eye and imagination, hand and tool shape the stone, cutting more deeply than sea and wind.
[Music] Oh, oh.
In a garden with men and women and the sea about her, she shapes the stone which water and wind have shaped before her. Stones cut out from the layered hill, and wood which has stood in the living tree.
[Music] Waves beat on the stone and the yielding wood, claiming them back from the small plans of man. They give them the shape of the earth and its ties, but the Carver cuts deeper with her seeing eye.
