I'm not going to wait till tonight. I'm going to get my blessing right now. So good to be in the house of the Lord this morning. So thankful that we already feel the presence of God in this place. There's no limit to what can happen today in the house of God. Whatever you need, my God is able to meet the need. Whatever you desire, my God is able to meet that desire. Acts 2:1-4 read like this. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. Kind of what it looks like this morning. We're all with one accord in one place here today. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all. Somebody say all. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Joel 2:28 says, "And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. Your old men shall dream dreams. Your young men shall see visions." It's so interesting in that passage in Acts chapter 2 when it says the day of Pentecost was fully come. We know the day of Pentecost comes from the Old Testament. We're very familiar with the story of Moses leading Israel out of bondage in Egypt. And we know that's a type of God bringing us out of bondage to sin and giving us new life. And 50 days after the Passover where they sacrificed a lamb that was symbolic of Christ who would come to take away the sins of the world, they had a celebration called the day of Pentecost. And 50 days after Jesus offered himself, there came a day of celebration called Pentecost. And the fullness of it came and he poured out his spirit. And it's available today. If you've never received the gift of the Holy Ghost, you can have it today. And if you've got it, we've got a reason to celebrate today. Let's lift up our voice. Let's lift up our hands. Let's make a joyful noise to the Lord. And let's worship him with all our heart.

I know who can deliver her from her tumor. Amen. Sister Kelly put in a prayer request for her best friend Annie Rossado. She is dealing with sickness and disease.

And uh if this is your first time with the Pentecostals, do understand that when you come again, we will no longer consider you a guest. We'll consider you family. So, we're just glad that you're here today. Um, and so just as a token of our appreciation for being here today and worshiping with the Lord with us. Amen. Amen. At this time, we'd like to uh dismiss our nursery as well. Those that are part of our nursery age, you're dismissed. Uh, parents, you're welcome to take them out at this time. Amen. Hallelujah. I'm excited that we're celebrating Pentecost Sunday today. But it it is important that we not only tie Pentecost to Acts chapter 2 and Joel chapter 2 as Pastor Barbara read earlier, but we tie it to even today. And so I want to walk you through just for a moment the history of how we got to where we are today in Pentecost. Amen. And as Pastor Barbara read in Acts 2:1-4, that's when the day of Pentecost was fully come. God poured out his spirit for the very first time on man. And as Pastor Barbara read, all were filled with the Holy Ghost. Not some. All were filled with the Holy Ghost. It was that initial outpouring of his spirit in the upper room where they were tearing, waiting for God to endue them with power from on high. It was the promise that Jesus made in Acts 1:8 that he would uh give them power. Amen. And that power came in Acts chapter 2. This was the launch of the New Testament church. In fact, on that day, there were added to the church 3,000 souls. And many signs and wonders and bold preaching followed that event on the day of Pentecost. This became the prototype for the spirit baptism for believers throughout history. And this continued into early church history. We see that the Holy Spirit baptism, prophecy, tongues, and miracles continued throughout the book of Acts. We see this in Cornelius's house. We see this amongst the disciples of John in Acts 19. We see early Christian writers like Irenaeus and Tertullian who mentioned spiritual gifts still being active in the church in the early centuries since the day of Pentecost. As the institutional church grew, the Pentecostal experience unfortunately became less emphasized. Then came the dark ages. That's when many of the fires were hidden. The dark ages traditionally referred to a part of time in the Middle Ages roughly around 476 AD to about 1000 AD. Spiritual gifts began to decline and became the rise of formulism and hierarchy diminished the focus on spirit empowerment. Yet the spirit was not extinguished. In fact, spiritual manifestations were still reported even during this time. We see this amongst the Montanists in the second century as well as medieval revivals and early Anabaptists. Then there was the forerunner to the Pentecostal movement, the Wesley and he uh holiness movement that happened in the 17th and 1800s. John Wesley emphasized sanctification and personal holiness and this spawned many holiness groups. Revivalism in America, the Cane Ridge revival in 1801 and the second great awakening took place. These increased a focus on spiritual experience and divine healing. Key leaders like Charles Finney emphasized the empowerment from on high much what was Jesus was referencing in Acts 1:8. Late in the 1800s the stage was set. Many holiness believers began to seek for the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Focus shifted from restorationism into returning to the experience in the book of Acts. Key voices during that time were A.B. Simpson who was part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. John Alexander Dowie was a healing evangelist. Then in 1901 in the city of Topeka, Kansas, Charles Parham, a holiness preacher believed that tongues was the Bible evidence of the Holy Ghost baptism. So he opened Bethel Bible School there in Topeka, Kansas. On New Year's Eve 1900, Agnes Ozman prayed and received the Holy Ghost speaking in other tongues. This impact it had sparked interest across the holiness world. Parham and his students began spreading this doctrine, the book of Acts experience. And this led to the very well-known revival that is the Azusa Street revival in our video, if you would. The location 214 Bonnie Brae Street on the third day of a 10-day fast. William Seymour began to preach to the prayer group from Acts 2:4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them [Music] utterance. Afterwards, Mr. Edward Lee asked Seymour to lay hands on him as they did in the scriptures and pray that he would receive the Holy Ghost. When they finished, Lee lifted his hands and began speaking in tongues. This experience sent shock waves through the room. And at the same time, a young lady named Jenny Moore fell from her stool where she was sitting. The power of God fell, and I was baptized in the Holy Ghost and fire with the evidence of speaking in tongues. As I looked at God, it seemed as if a vessel broke within me, and water surged up through my being, which when it had reached my mouth, it poured out in a torrent of languages God had given me. I sang under the power of the spirit in many languages. And in the home where the meeting was held, the spirit led me to the piano where I played and sang under the inspiration. Although I had not learned how to play, several other believers in the room were knocked to the ground by the power of the spirit, and six of them began to speak in tongues as well. Their shouts of joy could be heard throughout the neighborhood as the prayer meeting overflowed to the front porch. Many curious neighbors gathered and soon others began speaking in tongues and praising God. The word spread rapidly. By the next morning, the crowd had grown so great that it was difficult to approach the house. The porch became a pulpit as William Seymour began to preach to the crowd. This continued for three days and nights. It has been said that during this 3-day street service, the house shook under the exuberant praising of a hungry people. Even on one occasion, the porch collapsed at the weight of all the people. Services continued almost day and night with healings reported and hundreds of people filled with the spirit. After the third day, it was determined that a new location was needed to house the growing crowd of seekers. William Seymour and his followers soon found a vacated two-story church building previously used to stable horses. It had been converted into apartment housing upstairs with a large unfinished barn-like room on the downstairs. Its address was 312 Azusa Street. The revival at Azusa stretched from the early morning deep into the evening every day for three and a half years. One woman described the services with the following words. A sound like a rushing mighty wind filled the room and I was baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire. Rivers of joy and love divine flooded my soul. God also gave me the Bible evidence of receiving this experience and letting me speak in another language. But the greatest joy in my heart was the knowledge that I had received power to witness for Christ and power to tell others what great things God can do in a human life. William Seymour would preach and soon following a sermon the altars were flooded with seekers. No urging was necessary. By the end of the first month, you could find 800 people gathered within the building and over 500 gathered outside and it only continued to [Music] grow. There was such power in the preached word that people would shake in their seats and many would have the power fall on them as a word germinated in their hearts and they would burst out speaking or singing in other languages. Holy Spirit, would they lay hands on them or would they receive the baptism and speak with tongues back in the audience or did they have a tarrying room or what? Well, they had a room upstairs they called the upper room where you went to tarry for the Holy Spirit. But we could not control the spirit of God. Sometimes a person would receive the Holy Ghost right in an audience without even an altar call. Just stand right up and begin speaking in other tongues that the spirit gives us. I maintain you don't have to come to a specific place called an altar. You give up in your heart and the Lord will save you then, there, wherever you are. People heard them speak in their own language. The Japanese, Chinese, and all the different nationalities, they heard them speak and the gospel was preached to them. You mean they had not learned these languages? Oh, no. They had not learned because the spirit of God filled them. Now, you saw this and heard this with your own ears. I certainly did. Now, Dr. Simon, thousands of people visited the mission services over the course of three years. Whether they were drawn by a spiritual hunger or a fascination for the bizarre, whatever the case, those who came were impacted. Many who came with unkind motives left full of the Holy Ghost and a desire to spread the message of Pentecost. Hundreds of people were baptized with the Holy Ghost. Then hundreds turned into thousands and thousands turned into millions. History records the Azusa Street Revival as the greatest revival to ever sweep across North America. More than any other time in Earth's history, we need the spirit to fall again on us. Now is the time. Today is the day. We need a fresh outpouring of God's spirit on our nation like never before. If you believe that, lift your hands and say, "God, let it [Music] be." So from Acts the 2nd chapter through the early centuries to now, we honor our Pentecostal heritage. Today we pause in this moment of the service to honor the faithful pioneers of the Pentecostal movement. Men and women who have carried the flame of truth, revival, and holiness throughout generations. Unwavering commitment to the power of the Holy Ghost, to sound doctrine, to bold evangelism that has lit the path for countless souls. And now, as they are passing the torch to a newer generation, we stand ready, humbled by their legacy, and inspired to run with the same fire that first fell. May we honor them not only in word, but in continuing work, continuing work that began with passion, prayer, and purpose. So for the next few minutes, we are going to honor those that have carried the torch of doctrine and truth in what we are calling our pillars of fire processional. Be blessed. You're still good. God, all these years you've been good to me. You've allowed me to see and know the truth. You've allowed me to experience the baptism of the Holy Ghost, the beauty of holiness. Jesus name baptism, gifts of the spirit. Thank you, Father God. Come on, one more time. Worship leaders, you're still good. You're so good after all of these years. Come on, elders. Acts chapter 2 and verse 39, quite simply says, "For the promise is unto you and to your children, and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." I am so thankful today that I'm not just celebrating something that happened to somebody in my past. I'm so glad today that I'm not just honoring something that took place a thousand years ago, but I'm celebrating the fact that I can have the Holy Ghost. I'm celebrating the fact that my children can have the baptism of the Holy Ghost. I'm celebrating the fact that those that are addicted to drugs today can be delivered and filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. I'm celebrating the fact today that what happened in Acts the 2nd chapter can happen in my church, in my house, in my [Music] life. And so, just for the next few minutes, being cognizant of time, knowing that there is so much going on, I want to say thank you to our wonderful church staff here. I I told our church staff and leaders before the church, I said, "I would like to know who scheduled VBS and Pentecost Sunday on the same Sunday. Report to my office immediately." They said, "Pastor, that was you." All right, I'll talk to him. They've done a phenomenal job. We've got kids and a huge staff out back in VBS and all over the building. They're enjoying a wonderful VBS. Our staff here with Pentecost Sunday, you guys have done phenomenal. Thank you. Today has already been a great day, but the word of God is going to confirm that. And God's going to fill somebody with the baptism of the Holy Ghost today. Somebody's going to speak in tongues. And it's been way too long since you done it. Somebody's going to be renewed today. And we're going to leave here confident that the Holy Ghost is for us today. Before you're seated, I'm going to minister from this topic: "From the Upper Room to Your Room." From the Upper Room to Your Room. Tell your neighbor before you're seated, the Holy Ghost is for [Music] you. Two early men, let's call them Aaron and Joel, walked through a dry, windswept plain after a storm. These two early men we're calling Aaron and Joel today had seen wildfires before. Terrifying flashes that roared through the forest, but they had never controlled one. They only feared the fire. Come on, somebody. There's a lot of churches today that on Pentecost Sunday ain't got a lot to talk about because they're afraid of what's happening in here. They're not they're not they're concerned about it. But they need to know as these gentlemen knew that the fire that they feared was not to be feared. One day while sharpening a stone blade, Aaron's flint struck Joel's rock and a tiny spark flew into a nest of dry grass. Before they could blink, these two men, small, seen a small flame dance in front of them. Startled, they stepped back. But instead of running, they paused. The flame didn't destroy. It warmed them. It glowed in the dark. It turned raw food into something rich and edible. They tended it. They fed it. They shared it. And by the morning, they knew nothing would ever be the same. They realized that fire wasn't just for survival. It was power. It was light. And it was life. Centuries later, in the upper room in Jerusalem, 120 men and women waited. Jesus had promised something was coming. Power, he said, from on high. And then it happened. There wasn't a flint or a spark, but a rushing mighty wind, tongues of fire that sat upon each of them. And they all spoke with other tongues as they were filled with the Holy Ghost and fire. That day, Aaron and Joel with the first flame. The disciples likewise looked at one another with awe and amazement because they knew humanity would never be the same again. Somebody said in the scripture, "What meaneth this?" It was obvious that something significant and powerful and life-changing had taken place. It was power and light and light. Thank God. We read in Acts the 2nd chapter and verse 39, the promise is unto you and to your children. It was referenced earlier by Pastor Ogden, the continued outpourings. For those that try to tell you that the Holy Ghost was just for the disciples in their upper room in that moment for that particular scenario, have ignored the fact that it fell again in Acts chapter 8 to the Samaritans, to the Samaritans, to Acts chapter 10 in Cornelius's house. And I want to pause because in Acts chapter 10 and verse 44, the Bible says, "As Peter was speaking, it was in the middle of preaching that the Holy Ghost fell and the Gentiles received the baptism of the Holy Ghost." Preacher, when can I receive the Holy Ghost? On Pentecost Sunday? You can receive it right now. Because as Peter was preaching, the spirit of God fell. There wasn't an altar call. There wasn't musicians. There wasn't some kind of formal invitation. But in that moment, they received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. All it takes is a hungry heart to say, "God, if it's for me, I want it." Lift your hands, open up your mouth, and ask God to give you the Holy Ghost, and he will do it.
[Applause] In Acts chapter 19 at Ephesus, the Holy Ghost fell again. The dirty little secret is that early denominations, even in my town, experienced the baptism of the Holy Ghost. People sitting in pews and churches all over this city that don't even know that their early pioneers spoke in tongues. How scandalous. John Wesley recorded such experiences. Plus ailia tongues in early revival. He started the Methodist church. Presbyterians. The Cane Ridge revival in 1801 included manifestations like falling under the power and speaking in tongues. Come on, somebody. This used to be a New Hope Presbyterian church. Can I tell you the fire of the Holy Ghost has never been extinguished and it was never meant to be extinguished. In the early holiness movements in the 19th century, holiness groups paved the way for the Azusa Street revival as mentioned in our video. Global revivals in Africa, South America, and Asia. And did you know that today there are more than 600 million Pentecostals worldwide? I get so tired of the devil making Pentecostals feel like they're strange and weird and outliers and radicals and and something different. There's 600 million Pentecostals across the movement today. Thousands upon thousands of people are gathering speaking in tongues and being filled with the Holy Ghost today. From a few hundred in the early 1900s to over 600 million today. Our church is blessed to be a part of the United Pentecostal Church International that is present in over 195 nations and territories today. Why does it grow? Because it's a biblically based experience. Nobody cooked this up in some corner room. This wasn't built in some theory. This wasn't somebody's idea. This wasn't somebody's cultic movement to control people. We believe that it grows and know that it grows because it's based upon the word of God. It happened in Acts chapter 2 and it was meant to happen in every church. Can I tell you the early church never envisioned any other church but the Pentecostal church because it's empowering because it's spiritually dynamic. It's not just theology but it's transformation. Can I tell you today, brothers and sisters, the Holy Ghost is two very important things that I need for you to know on this Pentecost Sunday. Number one, the Holy Ghost is accessible. Somebody say accessible. Tell your neighbor, it's for me. It's accessible. It's no longer just for the apostles or the spiritually elite. Joel said, and we read it already, "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh." All flesh. What does all flesh mean? It's not limited in gender. Well, your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. It's not limited by age. Your young men shall see visions. And thank God I'm referencing this more and more every day. And your old men shall see dreams. It's amazing the older you get how a verse can be more meaningful. It's not limited by social status. Upon my servants and my handmaidens, woo, you ain't got to pay for the Holy Ghost. You could have rolled up in here on a bicycle or a brand new Cadillac. I'm telling you, upon my servants and upon my handmaids, I will pour out my spirit. It's not based on social status. It's not limited by race or ethnicity. Acts chapter 10, Cornelius was an entirely different ethnic group. They weren't even supposed to have the Holy Ghost. The Jews said, "It's only for us." But in Acts chapter 10, Cornelius proved the Gentiles were included. I don't come where you come from, what language you speak, what nationality you are. I'm telling you, every race, creed, origin, nationality, or background, I'm here to tell you the Holy Ghost is for [Applause] you. It's not limited by religious background. So, my I don't have any Pentecostal background. My mom and dad wasn't Pentecostal. I don't have any. That's all right. The Ephesians in Acts chapter 19 were only familiar with John's baptism. "Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?" "Well, we've only been baptized by John." That's all right because your religious background don't matter. And they received the baptism of the Holy Ghost in that moment. You know what that tells me? The Holy Ghost is for the child in VBS. That tells me the the Holy Ghost is for the teenager in the youth group. That tells me the Holy Ghost is for the grandmother praying quietly at home. That tells me the Holy Ghost is for the inmate in the prison cell. It tells me the Holy Ghost is for the person that's watching online from the living room today. I've come to tell you the Holy Ghost is for you. There's Brother David. For all of you that are watching online today, let me tell you, the Holy Ghost is for you. And if you're watching in your living room or wherever you're at watching online today, uh you can lift your hands and the Holy Ghost can fill the living room or the place that you're at and you can receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost, [Applause] but I
wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here. The same spirit that filled the apostles in the upper room is available to every hungry heart. No matter who you are or where you come from, it's accessible. Someone say accessible.
The second thing is it's necessary. John 3:5 said, "Except a man be born of the water and the spirit, there's no entering the kingdom." It's not a suggestion. It's a birth process. Except Romans 8:9, "If any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his." It's necessary. Titus 3:5, "He saved us by the washing and regeneration and renewing of what? The Holy Ghost."
Many people view the Holy Ghost as an upgrade in Christianity, something extra for the deeply spiritual or those in ministry. But the Bible doesn't treat it that way. The scriptures have made it clear that it's necessary and available to everybody. Brothers and sisters, the Holy Ghost is not a luxury. It's a lifeline. I don't know how anybody makes it without the baptism of the Holy Ghost. I don't know anybody makes it without the direction, the empowerment, the strength. And I'm going to tell you, nobody will make it without the Holy Ghost. The same Christ who raised Jesus from the dead shall quicken your mortal bodies. It's what's going to get you out of here. It's not reserved for the spiritually elite. It's the essential power that transforms sinners into saints.
Just like breath is necessary for life, try living without breath. The spirit is necessary for spiritual life. Imagine trying to power a lamp without plugging it in. You can polish it. You can decorate it. You can put it in a brand new suit and march it off to some church with the big old Bible. Set it in the perfect place. But without the power source, it cannot do what it was created to do. The same is true for the believer. Without the Holy Ghost, you may be religious, you may be moral, you may be baptized, but you are not spiritually alive without the baptism of the Holy Ghost.
[Applause] And the sign is speaking in a tongue you have not learned. Thank God. The biblical pattern in Acts 2:10 and 19, tongues were the initial sign. It's the universal language marker. It's a sign that transcends culture and language barriers. James 3:8 says, "But the tongue can no man tame. Only God can fully control it."
Pastor Ken Aio recently wrote this. He said, "A few years ago, I witnessed a lady speaking in tongues who unwittedly spoke in the Aramaic language. A lady standing beside her recognized this language and translated to the congregation in Aramaic. She had been praising and thanking God for giving her peace. That's the supernatural work of God."
Shortly before that, he said, "I witnessed a young 11-year-old boy as he was baptized in the Holy Ghost. He began speaking in other tongues. A bilingual minister standing nearby recognized the Spanish language and translated what the boy was saying to the congregation." He was saying, "Thy word, oh Lord, is the living word. Thy word, oh Lord, is the living word." Over and over again, supernatural act of God.
Recently a minister friend told me about this shared a tape recording of an apostolic preacher preaching at a conference with a trinitarian minister who had resisted being baptized in Jesus' name. A few days later he saw the trinitarian preacher who was beside himself. He said, "I listened to your tape and at the end of the sermon the preacher started speaking in tongues. I recognized the language he was speaking in because it's a native Indian tongue that I learned when my parents were missionaries to native India." My friend was amazed and asked him, "What did the preacher say?" He said, "He told me to be baptized in the name of Jesus." And the preacher was soon baptized thereafter.
[Applause] Years ago, Pastor Roio witnessed a message in tongues. He said, given by one of the saints in the church he pastored, another saint interpreted the message in tongues and it said, "I am Jehovah Rafa of the Old Testament, the Lord that health thee, and I am Jesus Christ of the New Testament. I took 39 stripes for your healing, and tonight I will heal you." As soon as that was spoken, a young blind girl cried out, "I can see!" and she instantly was healed as a result of the messenger in tongues.
I've come to tell you today, the secret's already out. If somebody has told you it's not for you, it's not for us, it's not for this modern era, it's too late. It's already out. It's already happening. I've come to tell you the Holy Ghost, the sign of speaking in tongues is for you. The Rojo said, "I knew a preacher who went into the hospital for heart surgery. While he was under anesthesia during surgery, he began to speak in other tongues. And after the surgery was over, the surgeon who was a foreigner asked the preacher if he can make an appointment with him later in his office." The preacher said, "I made an appointment with you." And the doctor said, "I want to make an appointment with you." Later, the doctor came to the preacher's office and told him that God spoke to him through the message in tongues in his native language and told him to obey whatever the preacher told him to do. The preacher preached Acts 2:38 to the doctor and the doctor was converted.
Numerous other times I've seen this phenomenon. It's no fluke. It's no fate. It's no coincidence. The baptism of the Holy Ghost is a supernatural act of God. There is no other way to explain any one of these stories apart from the supernatural power. Nobody but almighty God can make a person speak in a language that he or she does not know.
"You shall receive power," Acts says, "after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you." Not only does it convert you and save you, but brothers and sisters, to those of you that have the baptism of the Holy Ghost, let me remind you, it keeps you. It keeps you saved.
While natural fire and heat is so beneficial, natural fire and heat destroys bacteria that causes infection, decay, and disease. Viruses disrupt normal body function, spread illness. Natural heat and fire destroy mold, parasites, toxins, impurities in metal, contaminated water, dead cells, and decay are all destroyed by heat and fire. I want to tell you today, brothers and sisters, what the fire of the Holy Ghost burns out spiritually in your life. It's why you can't just every six months or every year or two or every time you get an inkling you pray through to the Holy Ghost or you speak in tongues because the Holy Ghost is what purifies you. It's what keeps you. It's what keeps impurities. It's what keeps carnality out of you. Uh, it burns out disunity. Uh, the Bible says the spirit brings oneness and unity. Uh, it brings out and and burns out dysfunction. The spirit brings order and fruit and gifts. The Holy Ghost will burn out deception. The spirit, the Bible says, leads us into all truth. It will burn out bitterness in your heart. The spirit promotes forgiveness and love. The Holy Ghost will burn out fear in your life. Uh, the spirit gives us boldness and power. The Holy Ghost will burn out pride in your life. The spirit promotes humility and submission. The Holy Ghost will burn out lust and carnality. The spirit crucifies the flesh. The Holy Ghost will burn out religious formalism. The spirit brings a living and powerful relationship with the creator of high.
I want to tell you brothers and sisters, it's not the will of God that you go a length of time without praying through to the Holy Ghost. You fight too many devils. There's too many temptations. There's too many trials. There's too many dark nights. There's too many valleys that you're going to go through Monday through Saturday for you not to come into the church house on Sunday and pray through to the Holy Ghost. You ain't got time to play games and patty cake around and recite some prayer that's dead, dry, and moldy. You need to pray till you speak in tongues. You need to pray until you feel the presence of almighty God from the top of your head to the soles of your feet so that you can live in the power of his spirit. Malachi tells us, "For he is like a refiner's fire. He shall purify the sons of Levi." Isaiah 4:4, "When the Lord shall have washed away the filth by the spirit, as a natural fire sterilizes, purifies, and protects the body, the fire of the Holy Ghost purifies, aligns, and empowers the soul." The upper room fire didn't just fall to excite them. It came to cleanse them, unite them, equip them to change the world. Hallelujah.
[Music] 2014, officials in Flint, Michigan, switched the city's water supply from the Detroit water system to the Flint River as a cost-saving measure. You ever had to or try to cut a corner in your relationship with God? The river water, though treatable, was corrosive and the city officials failed to treat it properly. As a result, the aging lead pipes through the city leeched lead into the water supply, contaminating the water. The result of that was over 100,000 residents exposed to toxic levels of lead. 2014 children developed neurological brain damage. Think I might be suffering from it a little bit right now. That's what I put words in there. You can't even say why you do that. Others suffered rashes and hair loss and illness. Maybe. All right, that second row is laughing a little too hard. 12 people died from the outbreak. What started as clean water became deadly, not because of the source, but because of the vessels it traveled through. Come on, flame. You know where I'm going.
You can have access to pure water, nutritious food, powerful service, preaching, singing, moves of God. But if it comes through a contaminated container, it becomes poisonous to the body. A clean source does not cleanse a dirty vessel. The vessel must be purified for the content to remain safe. Second Timothy 2:21, "If a man therefore purge himself, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified in meat for the master's use."
The spiritual analogy I want to draw today and help you to understand that a carnal vessel corrupts the flow of God's spirit. The word of God is pure. Someone say, "Amen." The bread of life is nourishing. Somebody say, "Amen." The living water is healing. Somebody say, "Amen." But when these flow through a vessel contaminated by bitterness and pride and jealousy or offense, they don't nourish, they irritate. Titus 1:15, "Unto the pure, all things are pure. I love everything." When I first came to God, nobody did anything wrong in the church. I love every song the choir singing. I love every every sermon that preacher's preaching. I love everybody in the church because unto the pure all things are pure. But unto them that are defiled is nothing pure, but even their mind and conscience are defiled. All of a sudden, everybody in the church is carnal. Everybody in the church is reprobates. Everybody in the church gets on your nerve. You don't like the song that they're singing. You don't like that preacher. You don't like the shoes that he's wearing. You don't like the temperature. You don't like the sound. You don't like anything. Honey, the source hasn't changed. The word hasn't changed. The people that were there, they're the same people that were there when you came. The problem is the vessel has been contaminated. And you need to get down to an altar and purge the vessel. You need to get down to an altar and pray through and get the contaminants out and say, "God, the source is not the problem. I'm the problem."
How will I know if my vessel is contaminated, pastor? I'm so glad you asked. In the last few minutes I got here, I'm going to tell you, I wouldn't want you to leave here confused. I've never been one to parse words, offend occasionally, not on purpose, but yes, but I've never been one to not tell you exactly the way I feel. How will I know if the vessel is contaminated? When every sermon feels like personal correction? Even encouragement sounds like rebuke because it's filtered through insecurity or offense. When unexplainable agitation during spiritual moments instead of peace, there's restlessness during worship or prayer. The spirit stirs what needs to be cleansed. You know, a sediment can just filter to the bottom of a glass and it kind of looks pure, but you stir it up a little bit and the whole thing gets cloudy. That's what happens for those that are carnal and backslid and haven't prayed through in a long time. When the Holy Ghost gets to moving and gets to stirring up, it doesn't cleanse, it just stirs. What needs to happen is the vessel needs to pray through and the vessel needs to be cleansed.
The vessel is contaminated when there's a loss of joy in serving. Ministry becomes a burden instead of a blessing. Often due to resentment, comparison, burnout, filtering that's unaddressed. You know, when I'm full of the Holy Ghost, loving God, praying through, serving in ministry is an honor because I'm doing it unto him. But when I'm carnal and backslid, hadn't prayed through in a long time, then everything they asked me to do, I'm like, "Come on, somebody." But when I'm prayed through, I feel honored. I feel honored.
The vessel is contaminated when you rehearse old offenses. When you play the highlight reel of something done wrong to you a thousand times by somebody that happened yesterday or might have happened 10 years ago. Wounds that should have scarred over are still tender and bleeding and poisoning new relationships. The vessel is contaminated when you isolate yourself from spiritual authority. Come on, somebody. We can get all excited about receiving the Holy Ghost for the first time, but you know what I'm more excited about? When I receive it for the hundredth time. I love to see new converts praising God, receiving it for the first time. But you know what I really love seeing? An elder come down to the altar, lift their hands, and begin speaking in tongues because they understand the Holy Ghost is what keeps me uh, the Holy Ghost has helped keep me where I need to be and keep me there.
The vessel is contaminated when you view correction as control, not care. Oh, y'all didn't know y'all going to get all this on Pentecost Sunday. Where's all that shouting go? Oh, come on, somebody. What was received as pastoral love is now seen as manipulation because pride has tainted the filter. The container is contaminated when you assume the worst about people's motives. Suspicion replaces trust. Words and actions are twisted through a lens of bitterness or fear. Come on, somebody. Praying through will fix that. I'm all for counseling. I'm all for all that. You know what? Here's typically what I have learned pastoring through the years. Someone wants to schedule a counseling session. I know there's a situation in their life. I know they're dealing with something or they they're struggling. I'll say, "I tell you what, I'll talk to you after Sunday morning service." Can I tell you how many counseling sessions have been cancelled? All that really needed to happen, they need to pray through. And once they prayed through, they're like, "You know what? I don't have that problem anymore." And I'm like, "Thank God. It's contaminated."
You feel spiritually dry despite being in a spirit-filled environment. The problem isn't the rain. It's the clogged vessel that can't exit. When small decisions by others deeply offend you. Lord, oh, we could go right on through lunch right here. Schedule changes, leadership assignment, song choices, they all feel like personal attacks, a sign that the soul is sensitive with spiritual infection. Oh, to the pure, all things are pure. And last but not least, when the vessel is contaminated, you can't celebrate others' victories. Envy blocks genuine joy. Instead of praising God for someone else's breakthrough, you feel bypassed or bitter. When the vessel is contaminated, every manna, even manna from heaven tastes like gravel when it's bitterness in your heart. I can't preach good enough. We can't sing good enough. We can't make you happy. But when you receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost again, when you're renewed in the Holy Ghost, when you pray through, suddenly you understand, hey, uh, it wasn't the church. It wasn't the preacher. It wasn't the choir. It wasn't brother John or sister Susie. I was the problem. And now I can understand and see it. Thank God for the Holy Ghost that saves me, that keeps me, that purifies me, that that keeps me living right. We don't need more food, more water. We need the vessel to be cleansed. Even sometimes we say, "Lord, open up the windows of heaven and pour out your spirit." He's already done it. He did it in Acts chapter 2. You always that, you know what needs to happen is we need to open ourselves up to God and the spirit that is within us. When we stir it up, when we activate it with faith and worship and honor unto God, the Holy Ghost begins moving on us and it touches the one next to us, the one in front of us, the one behind us, uh, and God begins to move in the congregation. He's already poured his spirit out. There's been more Holy Ghost poured out than you'll ever be able to contain. There's more power. There's more anointing. There's more healing. There's more strength than you'll ever be able to hold. What you need to do, you need to cleanse the vessel. You need to say, "God, help me to pray through to the Holy Ghost so that I can get all that you have for me." Stand with me. Woo! The Holy Ghost is not just a comforter. It's a refiner's [Music] fire. Elder Shaw, when I come to the altar, you know what I'm doing? I'm walking through the refiner's fire. Oh, I may feel convicted. It may hurt a little bit. It may sting a little bit. There might be some pride that's damaged. I might have to to sacrifice a little pride. But when I walk through the refiner's fire, I lift up my hands and I yield myself to God. I feel the Holy Ghost purifying me. I feel the spirit of God cleansing me. Uh, and making me what I ought to be. "Create in me," the psalmist said in the 51st chapter, "a clean heart and renew in me a right spirit, God." John 7:38, "He that believeth on me out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." But if the belly is filled with offense, what flows out will be polluted. Not only when I'm not right with God does my vessel contaminate my [Music] spirit. Do you know who else it contaminates? Everybody I come in contact with. What should be flowing out of me is living water. But because I'm filled with envy and strife and bitterness and offense and anger, when it comes out and infects others around me, it contaminates those around me. And unfortunately, even those that have never had a Pentecostal experience and don't know anything about it, they look at me and say, "If that's what Pentecost is about, I don't want anything to do with it because my vessel is contaminated." God help me today uh to purify the vessel so that out of my belly shall flow rivers of living uh sustaining uh strengthening water for somebody else. I want to be a strength to those around me. Lift your hands. Say, "God, help me to pray through to a purifying process. God, help me today on this Pentecost Sunday." Let me tell you, if you've never received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we've outlined from the very beginning of this service to let you know this Holy Ghost is for you. If you've never received the baptism of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, in just a moment, I'm going to open up these altars. I want you to make a beeline down here. Lift your hands. Repent of your sins. Clear out that vessel, God. Anything that's in me that's not right, purify me. Repent, God. I'm sorry for the mistakes I've made, for the things that I've done. God, I pray that you would cleanse and purify me. And then lift your hands, open your mouth, and begin to praise God. And when you feel and hear words in your head that may not sound right, you may not understand, you vocalize that. The Holy Ghost is nothing more. And the speaking of tongues is nothing more than the Holy Ghost speaking out. That's all it is. Spirit in you speaking out. You open up your mouth and you speak it. Doesn't matter what it sounds like. You yield the most unruly member of your body, your tongue to God and let him fill you with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. If you're here today and you say, "Pastor, I got the Holy Ghost. I want you to walk through the refiner's fire." In a moment, I want you to step out from where you're at. I want you to walk through the fire of the altar, lift your hands, and you pray till you speak in tongues. You let the Holy Ghost burn out every impurity, all carnality, all works of the flesh, everything that hinders and binds and pulls you down and potentially could threaten your relationship with God and your eternity with the creator. You lift your hands and say, "God, burn it out of me, God. Cleanse me and make me right with you, God." Pray until you are full of the Holy Ghost. Again, worship leaders, begin to sing a song of invitation. I open these altars up to you right now. If you've never received the Holy Ghost, you come down and lift your hands. God wants to fill you with the Holy Ghost today. You need a renewing today, you come down, lift your hands. Ministry team, make your way through the altar right now. Lay your hands on people.
