Welcome everyone. Today we're going to be speaking with the masters of masters, the dime of the stops, the robot animation hidden legend downtown LA, 2 in the morning, mystic guru that people talk about. I'm going to hype this one up.
So, it's like 12:30. It's like almost 1:00 a.m. I'm going I'm going to hype this one up. We're about to speak with the legendary, you know, Kung Fu Panda, you know, uh, the turtle that teaches, you know, then the then Kung Fu Panda, the turtle, that's who we're speaking with, the legend himself, Tabo. So, let's let's get Tabo on.
If you don't know who Tabo is, pretty much he's like a huge teacher to many that train in animation and popping and popping animation robot all over the world. And yeah, very in like the ideas and formulating them and explaining them and the reason behind them. Um, always appreciate when Tabo explains ideas and techniques and yeah, just very what a mind. So yeah, let me uh send him let me get him in here and then we can hear the story of Tabo. Who is this mysterious man? Feel free to ask questions as well for those that are watching.

So, for everyone that's watching, uh, we are going to interview Tabo. We're going to hear his story. For those that have been watching, I have been interviewing dancers, street dancers from different states, different countries, hearing their story, how they got into dance. We've heard about Europe, a lot of VHS tapes going to France and Germany of the, you know, electric boogie. We've heard about the waving community in LA with Daryl Stokes, the influences of, you know, Jay Smooth, uh, Daryl Stokes, uh, I just, um, No Bone Tyrone, um, who else did I interview? We were we're we're doing different many stories, many origin stories and OGs of the street dance community, animation, robot, etc. So today we're going to speak with someone named Tabo. And Tabo is also uh a person that has been mentioned by many street dancer and also specifically the popping community and specifically the robot and the animation community. Tabo's name is spread spread around and he's a I would consider him a teacher. Well, I would say he he has taught a lot of the influential poppers in the scene. Um, and also he teaches like every Wednesday and Thursday night on a bridge just for those that are interested sharing this information and techniques and how to get better, you know, just what a like giving selfless person I would say. Um, so without further ado, we have Tavo. Hey Tavo, how you doing? How you doing sir? How you how you feeling sir?

>> but but we'll let's get into it. Um, man, so Tabo, I just like
>> I just want to say it's crazy. The first time I heard of you was I remember coming to LA. So, this has to be like 10 years ago. And I forget who mentioned you. it maybe someone from the the time that the lot was around or so maybe it was um a a popper it was someone a friend and they mentioned they said yeah there's someone named Tabo and he teaches you know for free about like techniques and drills and you can go to him and ask questions and I was like who is this Tabo person and they were like yeah well you have to go to this place called Tokyo beat at like 2 in the morning and you have to it's at a club and you have to just you just you find you'll see And I'm like, damn. Like 2:00 in the morning, like 3. So I went there and I'm like, waiting and I'm like, oh my god. Like it's like 2:30. I'm like, who is this Tabo person? Then I

>> Then then then it was in the club. The Tabo shows up and I remember just like just hearing him. He's talking about control. He's talking about music, listening, just just giving this information. I was like, "Huh, interesting." Like what he says, it makes sense. It It does help. The suggestions help. Um, and then years later, I come back cuz I'm interested in animation. And now I'm like, you know, I want to tab. I want to ask like really talk to you and ask you questions about animation. And you would just break down everything. You were like, the neck, this is how you use the neck. The chest, this is how you use the chest. The shoulders, you want to break it. you want to use torso like you can you were able to un explain pretty much every body part how to activate it and then also different types of dime stops you using the shadow how you're there was just so much knowledge and explained so understandably that it was like wow I I was I was just really moved by this um so now we're going to get started on the story now that I've pretty much hyped Tabo up. We're gonna I would love to hear I would love to hear your story, Tabo, of how did you get into the dance? I know we talked about this previously, but if you could kind of go through that, what was your introduction to the dance world? And even maybe before dance, what was your upbringing, your childhood like? What was that like for you?
>> So, I born 1968. I was pretty like I grew up in my grandma house pretty much because my father and my mom were working
>> and then my house of uh my grandma's and my mom's brother my mom's sister and me and my sisters I have two young sisters and then so all together so it's a big family and my mom mom father come back the Then I'm one of the kids uh not listening that much more than my grandma.
>> So sister, come over here. I'm going go land that way.
>> You weren't listening. You didn't listen.
>> And we kind of what it call wild kids. I going to the right by my right by my house river. I have a jungle jungle and I prom jungle right by there. So we just jump in rivers and get some fish jumping in the mountains or jungles get some fruits.

>> Yeah. And then my sister going to the like the classic ballet studio. She was a she was really young the elementary school time I guess. I made eventually already but uh so she can they they take my my mom take it to the studio but I'm going to the uh no like a kindergart kindergarten time and I'm like elementary school in Japan elementary school you can go to take a bus by yourself and going to the town
>> so I'm a taken my sister my sister's a the kindergarten so five
>> and I'm a six already. So got my sister. So I'm taking my sister and school. I'm in the B studio. So I'm going just wait to done and studio. I might get bored. So I start to play around on the lines. I'm doing the vi sometimes. I'm holding it like this.
>> So So you're playing around while your sister's taking the class.
>> Yeah. Yeah. And then they say that the teacher say you should take a class too. Oh yeah, I'm do it.
>> I'm starting the classic ballet. I was there second grade.
>> You took well I like what
>> I was seven that time. Seven. So
>> okay.
>> I mean 75. 75.
>> How long were you doing that for?
>> I was going to the fifth grade. So fifth grade.
>> To the fifth grade.
>> But I'm only one boy. So I'm a pretty much lifter. So girls come jump
>> but it's you know second grade elementary school and third grade school you know and against like high school ladies and junior high ladies they are [ __ ]
>> you're saying that the the girls that you're lifting
>> yeah the girl girls jump in I'm going pick it up because I'm only one boy,
>> right?
>> Okay.
>> So, it was kind of it was kind of fun too, but I still same time it's a lot of work. I'm not into it.
>> Mhm.
>> Not not thinking like a boy girl things yet so little might feel like a job.
>> I see. Okay. I'm doing classic ballet in the first I sixth grade. We went to how many years? Like four years, right?
>> Oh, no. Three years. Three years to
>> fifth grade.
>> Yeah. And then fifth grade. My friend's doing a He's actually rich for the elementary school. I mean, he can buy snacks and but he still save money to try to buy his keyboard.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Because he into some electric music. Oh, okay.
>> And he showed me to the YMO was not a popular that time. Yeah. Because 79. So it's not a division in Japan yet. They are going to US and then they're doing in the US version of the album first. But my friends are into it already
>> and then so why you have so much money and I'm doing the newspaper in Japan. have a the day daytime newspaper for the early morning and then the evening newspapers with like around like a 3:00 p.m. or 400 p.m. they come so they pick it up and then little kids actually doing it they toast it to the newspapers.
>> Okay. The kids that's a job the kids are putting the newspapers.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Okay. Mhm. day and the night. Both you can do it for the the little kids for the parttime job and then almost get like he doing like 50 houses.

>> For the delivery
>> and then get almost like 50 bucks on a month.
>> That's a lot of money for the elementary school.
>> Right. That's true.
>> Right.
>> Right.
>> Wow.
>> Oh [ __ ] So I want to do I want to be rich.
>> So you did the job as well. I'm I'm I'mma quit B school and then going to the newspaper board.

>> And then I got money and then I'm trying to started to go out here and there and then one time we went to skate park and uh almost like two if you're walking up there like it takes two hours but it take a bus like 1 hour.
>> Okay. So right by the American uh base they have a lot American base and one of them American base near there they have a lot of skate park so so many almost like 50% American people and 50% Japanese people as a

>> some go over there and it was kind of fun learn and play around and play the punk music I was already into the punk music a little bit already
>> and And so I would just play around like a Saturday night people type of move and and then the American people appreciate it like a little kid boy doing it some stupid dance. So I was damn I was good.
>> How old how old were you?
>> I'm 11.
>> Okay. 11 12 at the at the roller skate ring.
>> Yeah. Roller skate park.
>> And are the is the Americans are they adults? Like everyone is adults.
>> No, no. They say I have a all mixed age.
>> Okay. There's
>> Yeah. Yeah. But early I'm going to the little bit earlier time like around 5 5 p.m.ish.

>> Right.
>> Because it take me to two hours. If you take a bus is going to do the money. So I'm walking out there.
>> So take a two hours and play around over there and I leave at six and then two hours come back at seven or eight.

>> Yeah.
>> Wow. Okay. And so they try to save money for the bus when you know then uh I got some people over there inside so they give me like a free ticket a lot of time so I can get in free

>> then and then one day I saw some lady actually she's I think she's like a element that junior hi to the high school at age
>> and she was doing it dancing like this
>> now we call the sem but that was a mun and I was so interested she she looks funky but
>> yeah but I don't know how to speak English at all that time so I'm looking her for they have a two mirror like this so I'm I'm stand up over there right here
>> you can use my head Yeah. But I'm I'm watching I'm watching like this view, but she's actually here because I can't

>> Yeah. Yeah. I'm I'm too mirror and then looking at her and she's doing this. I'm trying to copy the moves.

>> Yeah. And then I got disco type of dance for a little bit after that.
>> And then uh my is a what's the my aunts sister's aunt my mom's sister like a high school to the college that time. So they're going in the disco. So they take me a disco a couple time. I was uh like a 13 14 and then we we just play around over there and then do some disco group.
>> Yeah. And then and then and I'm I'm a junior high already.
>> Then the junior high I was doing a cheerleader type of things. It's different than the US. Japan only the guys and then they put the the school uniform out on it and a long bandanas and a white robes and just one drums. Boom.
>> Oh,
>> okay.
>> So, we did we do some kind of karate move like boom boom boom boom.
>> Oh, wow.
>> Boom.
>> Wow. Okay,
>> that's great.
>> So, we doing that kind of stuff and I was a cheater actually. someone in the front and then all of my my friends are doing it and then we're going to like a baseball that school and go out there. Okay.
>> Fight a little bit after
>> then. So we try to put something new routines on the uh children Indians and then at the same time my school was a little bit old so they try to make a construction new ones.
>> So they are actually scrapping buildings all the big construction machines take it out all the buildings. So I was watching it this play around the the construction robot ideas and lobo dance was kind of popular that time like around
>> 79.
>> Mhm.
>> Already but it's it's already 82 I believe 80 82 81 for my junior high time. So we try to put the robot dance ideas in uh our the kar based on some
>> Yeah, that's cool.
>> Wow.
>> And the beginning was just pray first.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow.
>> And then into the robot, not the dance, but doing a robot on try to put cheerleading ideas.
>> Mhm. And then uh the the 82 we went to movie theater to my first date for the girl. I forgot her name but she
>> went forget the movie.
>> Yeah, we went to movie and then she want to see some idol. They have two movie at the same time. Some idol some Japanese idol movie. She wants to see it. All right. And then I look it and another movie was a the breaking not breaking fresh dance. Flash dance.
>> Oh okay.
>> Fresh dance the movie. Yeah.
>> So wait did you see she wanted to see the one movie and you were interested the other or what was
>> Other one was just I didn't know what movie was.
>> Oh
>> she wanted to watch some Japanese idol movie and then that one just one more there two sets of movies for that time like two little cheap movies the others.
>> So you watch two movies. two there two movies with one ticket.
>> Oh,
>> and back in the day one ticket if you stay the movie theater and then you can watch over and over and over.
>> Ah, that's interesting. Now you can't do that,
>> right? Now you can do that.
>> Yeah. All right.
>> But anyway, so she watched the she's idol movies and then she was going to the the some American movie was fresh dance and in one part they're doing a backslide like almost like one minute and a half or some [ __ ] they're doing some robot dance or popping actually doing.
>> Yes. Yes.
>> And the backside and the B boy a little bit.
>> I was so interested in the backside. I into it. What the [ __ ] is that? Wow. Okay.
>> And then I want to watch one more time. And she said, "Okay." And then watch this movie again or the Japanese idol one. Watch and then I watched again, right? But still don't figure out. I want to [ __ ] the show.
>> I want I want to see one more time. She pissed off when she go home. Tav said there's something here. There's something here.
>> Yeah.
>> So total I watched it three times for that movie.
>> Three times. So you in the movies for like five hours, four hours?
>> Yeah. Almost like what? One
>> just watching the movie over and over.
>> Yeah. Over hour and a half movie, right?
>> Yeah.
>> But it's not just that movie you watch. You
>> watching two movies. I had to wait for the movie.
>> You had to watch six movies. It's like
>> as a trial and and and we complain about 30 minute commercials or ads on a YouTube video
>> or a 30 second commercial or ad, you know.
>> I don't I don't watch the idol movie anymore. I just go little bit outside that they have like a little
>> Oh, you not the movie theater, but I'm just stay there.
>> Still still. Wow. Okay, I see.
>> Yeah. We were trying to figure out how they [ __ ] do it and the movie started to go back inside and then next day and the next day I went I'm went to I told my friends for the all that cheering groups dude I saw some movie that's crazy they're doing crazy back slide I don't know the name but they call they keep moving back what you talking about all right let's go see it then we ditch the school
>> and then going to the movie videos with all my friends and I watch uh four time all total for my friends.
>> Four times with your friends?
>> Yes. So I watched seven time in total
>> for that the two days but I still don't figure out
>> wow
>> how he did it. Then after that I was trying to figure out every break time on the school outside they have a little uh we have a lunch so they have a the big refrigerator for the put they put them in the milks in inside they the breads so that one's a little the aluminum door
>> so little reflection not mirror enough oh my god
>> but still you can see some Okay.
>> So, we try to figure out try to do a backside me and friends over and over and over and over and over. Wow.
>> Every [ __ ] day
>> and take me six months to figure it out.
>> Six months.
>> Six months.
>> And then you figured it out.
>> Yeah, I figured it out. I kind of I kind of back memory came out. I was misled with a pan mind little bit because my aunts know a little bit or like a this kind of stuff.

>> And then he say like a Tik Tok does the same ideas.
>> Oh, so the miming the pening technique. Yeah. So pop up for that ideas and then uh I was uh I was a I did a part-time job for uh some of theaters they called uh PTA group in Japan that all the students mom's groups
>> doing some quarters group they have some
>> okay
>> and they have a competition for the all the junior high moms come and do some singing contest or something for the the groups and then that's a the newspaper hall like newspaper have a little hole and then they doing the show and then they have a big mirror on the middle of the steps.
>> Wow. So I was pay around the this move for the pan one that was the closest one that I can think about
>> because VCR was too expensive at that time so I don't have it in my house.
>> Uhhuh.
>> Even my friends nobody have VCR at all.
>> Wow.
>> And of course the movie was too new so we don't have it. American movie came out always like a year six month later.
>> Wow. So, and then I just just continue for the this move. I'm continue like this. Oh, look. So, close. And I was doing it like accident. Boom. Came out.

>> That's That's pretty incredible to see see, how do I say this? To watch something
>> a video of something that you can't pause it, you can't rewind it. You see it and there it goes. I hope you caught it. And you kept watching it. And then now with no one being able to teach you, okay, this is step one. This is the next part. You're just having to figure it out from from what you're seeing. Like you're you're literally trying to you're you're figuring out the illusion. You're figuring out the magic trick without someone explaining to you how to do it. That's Yeah. Wow. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So, continue. Where how do how does the I know eventually popping somehow connects to all of this.

>> But I don't know the name for that dance because that's a part of a fresh dance for the mini part. And then um and then year later my friends wanted another movie theater for the dates and then the movie before the movie start they have a little commercial right like back in the day they show the news a little bit short news and then commercial for the next movie is coming in coming up
>> and then they did a commercial for the great king the movie
>> the to shrimp the shrimp and the
>> yes
>> the taco shaped doing that movie.
>> Yes.
>> But they only did a commercial
>> and then doesn't doesn't come anywhere Okinawa. I think maybe they show in the Japan maybe.
>> I don't know.

>> But my my friend said I saw some crazy ones. They're just talking doing it that dancers we talking about on the fresh danc we don't know the name of the band. My friends doesn't memorize it. And that movie was gonna come out too.

>> But uh we we already doing it kind of like mixture the robot dance and back slide and the the opening of the the fresh dance part. He's doing it kind of like move like a little ding ding ding and then they do little what? Crock move.
>> And then they pick it up doing it. Puppet look like

>> So we can mix the like a robotic move like this or like a little bit animated
>> and play it out or do mix to the the heavy robot type of something like this. So we actually started praying around.

>> Yeah. Then uh they have a Michael Jackson contest too. Then we go we go into the high school and they have a Michael Jackson contest and then one of my friends nicknames Michael. He's really good mimic Michael Jackson's. His nickname still Michael
>> but he's into the contest. So we just go over there because he's one of my other friends who are interested in backside.
>> We can do the backside. He can do a backside. But he got he talking about uh the bruin the video
>> Billy. Yeah. Bill the video for the Michael Jackson doing the backside but I never seen it because MTV. So my my home channel doesn't show.
>> Okay. Video things. That was a cable but cable was so special for that time. Only some car place or only some store has not in the home.

>> And and then she's going to the Michael Jackson contest. So he's really good mimic Michael and he actually won.

>> that was my point that they have a guest dancers. It's called a football from American based kids. They have a kill high school in Okinawa and then he they came from one one of them the high school and then they're doing a B boy and popping and that's five guys in there and doing a show for the after the Michael Jackson song contest
>> and one of them guy tall white guys named John [ __ ] we find out what a name after
>> but we want it popping.

>> They were popping.
>> Yeah, he he's only one popping. Then other guys and actually one more guy doing kind of baby popping too, but they all other four is pretty much a big boy.

>> But it's my first time saw lights.

>> And part of power part of the break uh the the stance was no windmill yet. So I saw the women for real once. Oh my gosh, that's so much.

>> And then keep on doing it. And then they have us some uh first event in Okinawa and we went they did like a little competition style.

>> And then we don't know what we actually but we entered we passed the PM but only 10 teams. That's a team battle. I got 10 teams. So
>> So it it wasn't solo popping.
>> Yeah. Yeah, popping and you can do some little the baby B boy too because they're separate B boying and then popping and competitions.
>> And what year was this this competition?
>> That's 84.
>> So in 84 there's a B boy and there's a popping competition. Correct.
>> Yeah.
>> And an open album.
>> And how who are the poppers? What were their name? Were they all like from different areas that they were watching Flash Dance? They were watching Michael Jackson as well. Who were the other?
>> But we don't know the names still that time.
>> So So what was what were people call what were they saying they're doing? It's

>> Oh, wow. Okay. But he's doing the mannequin things and then some American ters walk by it and then they they saw we doing it or oh you guys are doing pop game.

>> What the hell? What's the name? We don't know the name for dance and then they uh we don't know how do you spell we asked but we don't know spell the word for the person.
>> Okay. put bring the pants pop. Pop lock and he put a pop lock. The lock was actually the L. I thought was sounds like more pop rock because Japanese people don't know R and L difference.

>> So I thought was a pop rock like a lock and raw rock. Then they said lock. Wait, why right L?

>> Use the dictionary because I was not a good student. So

>> Why? Why lock? Because we don't have locking.
>> I think maybe older than me they do it. But it's elementary school. I know the the Lord skate park and the disco I went for the the time I never see the locking.

Monday. And then talk to another people come over. So the Pandora show up and popping came and tries show up. And then some random kids over there on the right by department. Yeah. They come to homeland practice Monday. So some people come and practice together. And then, uh, so the start the kids coming more to the homeland. And M show up. Of course. And I mean, the J and Kyif. And some more OG show up to Wel and Big Coco. They're more like a leg stay and the the tmas. Yeah. Wow. More and more people. Yeah. The popping chuck. Okay. And are you teaching at this time? You're teaching people that are there that are coming. I'm still doing it Friday, little bit. And then Monday. And then me and Confusion looking for the place to go out in the club. Okay. And then computer confusion find a place called 1983 for the event's name 1983. He find out computer. Nice. Then that year interested because this is I started we made a group 1983. Oh, so the event's called 1983 and that's also when you started your group. So they, they should be play that kind of time. That's the sounds like. But still good, some music. And then we are practicing. They are doing the Monday. So after the homelands, we go over there. Homeland closed by midnight. That's how we started the club and practice type of things. After so after the home run, everybody go the car rooms and then practice over there. And then park in the sessions and go home at 5 in the morning. Wow. Wow. That started in 2003. 2003 or 2004. That's we started that way. Yeah. Well, there's only one girl at that time. I just. Wow. Yeah. And after that, I think everybody know because kind of frantic show up. And then that's like 2005. They did online jam too. Yeah. And they show up. But I'm a, I'm a water mama teaching for my kids, the kids over there. Okay. When, when did people start to come to see you like this? The like right now, we there's the bridge, right? That's every Wednesday and Thursday. What was before the bridge? What was, was there anything that was before the bridge that people were coming to you? My arcade are the first one, but I only jaw and them. Then and the homelands were the almost everybody because we go in the Monday. Then the homelands people come. Yes. They practice and at night over 21, the cover and then practice. I see. Okay. Then, uh, people getting better. And but still, I'm a just one of them. Some older guy was talking [ __ ] for everybody. Then they don't think I'm going to grow up or something, right? Yeah. Yeah. The guy was a started popping was a he on the dance studio all the time. And then she's one of my students, name Taboo. And then she came to United States on Ohio. And then she came down to, uh, the the people summit or freestyle session, big event time. You coming over here? And then we doing the sessions. Then yeah, I'm a, you student. Okay. Look, so I'mma try to take care of you to get better. So I made a plan for. I make number one in the world. Oh, okay. Yeah. Then try to make some kind of system to get win. Or I got notice from Andre. I got notice from other people's. Wow. Okay. So, like all combined together to try to make it better for her. But she died, uh, the car accident, I think. And then I, I don't know what happened in the first, but, uh, she was, she was in machine gun. She was part of that crew. And she, and she was also coming to you learning. And you were taking. Ohio. Then she tried to move out to the San Francisco because she part of a single punk. And I'm a single punk, San Francisco, as a Bay Area group. Okay. And then she, you were, uh, trying to make like this, uh, the student like a learning. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So she made, she sent me the BCR and then for the copy. And then we make a zero for the number. And then, all right, let's start. And then, so we watching the same video with the same number. And then, okay, this part with the number, like six minutes and whatever, whatever. You did it kind of good, but you should get more angle, right? Wow. We can't go to the next homework. They work close. You got to make sure then we could tell. For who is it more serious and they're doing it. And then like one weekend or one time I met homeland and practice or met some club and then doing the same practice. And then some people super super super example, swim. We practice on the nightclub called Sabia on Wednesday night. That's my day off. Wednesday night. And then practice there. And I go into his house and I practice together for the the garage. And then give me some homework. And then three days later, he call me back. I think I'm done your homework and have another one. And then keep living in the morning body. So I'mma I'mma get by job done by 8 in the morning. Drive out Marino Valley in the middle of the on the way from my house. So I'm stop by his house and practice in his garage till like a noon or 1:00 p.m.ish. And I had to go sleep there. And I that next week he already done. So almost every three days or four days, he needs some upgrade to the next. So he's super serious. Wow. And then plus his practice, he's like stupid pract. Nice. I think he's a biggest talent type for sure. Is he dance? He dance all the time. M. Has two questions. Yes. Um, how come you don't charge people? Need to be so rich? We didn't think making money for the fans, special people in the back of the day. You get some competition or some media on the TV or something. Yes. But, uh, our dance is not making money type of dance on the studio. At the same time, everybody kind of backed up and try not to teach nobody. Because I'm should be number one in the world. So they don't share people. Back in the day, they don't share. They don't share because they want to be number one. So they're not trying to share. You remember what the jamo say? How you do that? So we go on a lay party and always with the groups together and dancing, extend some stuff. Then he looks like have ideas. For the popping, popping idea, loop it out. And old school way was about in and out, in and out. In and out, that's the rule was. But they are different. They're more like a loop.
