Tasmania sits squarely in the path of the Roaring Forties, a band of fierce, persistent westerly winds that whip across the Southern Ocean. Now, while we've established that the landscape below Tasmania is very unique, above the ground is no different, especially when it comes to its past geographic bridge to mainland Australia. Look at a modern map and Tasmania is clearly an island separated from the Australian mainland by the notoriously rough waters of the Bass Strait. But geographically speaking, this separation is a relatively recent event. During the Last Glacial Maximum, an ice age that locked up massive amounts of the Earth's water in expanding polar ice caps, global sea levels dropped by as much as 120 m. This dramatic drop exposed a massive, sprawling land bridge connecting Tasmania directly to the state of Victoria. For tens of thousands of years, humans and animals could simply walk across this grassy plain. It was only about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, as the Earth warmed and the massive glaciers melted, that the rising seas flooded the lands.
