Knee surgery now optional??

Scientists just regrew knee cartilage that disappeared from aging using a single injection that blocks an aging protein. Meet Dr. Nidhi Bhutani at Stanford Medicine.

She discovered a protein called 15 PGDH that doubles in your knees as you get older and destroys the cushion between your bones called cartilage. When cartilage disappears, your knees hurt and every step becomes painful. This affects one in five adults in America and costs $65 billion a year in medical bills. Right now, there is no drug that can fix it, only knee replacement surgery.

Here's what they did. They found a molecule that blocks 15 PGDH and injected it into old mice with worn-out knees. The cartilage grew back thick and strong like it was young again.

They tested it on injured mice with torn ligaments like basketball and soccer players get. The injection stopped arthritis from developing. Half of people who tear their ACL get arthritis within 15 years from that injury.

Here's where it gets insane. They tested it on human knee tissue from patients getting knee replacements. After 1 week, the cartilage started regrowing. An oral pill version is already in clinical trials and could eliminate knee replacements.
