On the home front in Washington DC at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time, an ambush was carried out on several National Guard soldiers posted as security forces standing guard at the entrance to the Farragate West Metro Station a few blocks from the White House. At least two soldiers were killed during the attack. Analysts comment, "This is a developing situation and most details are still unconfirmed."
The asalant reportedly initiated the ambush by approaching the soldiers and engaging them from extremely close range. As per a post made by President Trump on social media, the shooter was also wounded severely during the attack and did not escape as indicated by initial reports. No description of the shooter has been provided yet. However, locals visually observed a person who is assessed to be the shooter being handcuffed and loaded into an ambulance. It is not clear as to how the shooter became wounded or if the soldiers engaged the asalent during the attack.
The soldiers were wearing body armor in accordance with procedure. However, one soldier suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Both wounded soldiers were members of the West Virginia National Guard. And as of 3:42 p.m., Governor Morsy confirmed that both service members succumbed to their wounds.
