The Kelly Williams TV Show37:30

Transcription

[Music] Hey everybody, it's Kelly Williams with the Kelly Williams Show and your home TV. And it's time for the Kelly Williams Show. Woohoo. All right, I am very excited. Today we are live on location at Art of Coffee in Kuma, Texas. One of my favorite places, of course. I know everybody knows that already. Um, I am with the amazing Debbie Simmons. She is a faith-filled bestselling author and international speaker whose mission is to help others live a focused, faithful, and fearless life. That is awesome.

>> Wow. Wow. Wow. Love that.

>> It's exciting.

>> It is exciting. So, Debbie, where are you from originally?

>> I am from Mississippi. Like right where all the hurricanes go in. That's where I'm from.

>> I love it. You're supposed to go Mississippi. I'm from there. Yeah. I love that. I love it. worked on my accent a little bit. I have. I've worked on it a little bit. So,

>> I love that. I love Mississippi.

>> Um, okay. So, you are the founder of Anchor Point. If people do not know what that is, what is it?

>> Oh, that's a very good question. So, Anchorpoint, our real deal is we want to help families thrive. So, we know that families struggle all over the place. So, we do that through our OBRA medical clinics which help young ladies when they're struggling with, oh my gosh, I'm pregnant and how do I choose life and what do we do there? And then we have our Hope family center which does case management one-on-one interactions because I don't know about you, but you know, my children didn't come with instruction manuals, right?

>> They did it.

>> No. And so these

>> I got one at the hospital.

>> Yeah. So these kids are instruction manuals and but we're overwhelmed and so this just helps these young moms and young dads figure their way. We have a maternity home called Hope House which is for girls that are pregnant but homeless and then we and then we have our hope community initiatives and these do like prenatal training, parenting training, recovery ministry. So like if women in our community are struggling with sexual abuse or abortion recovery or trauma, how can we help them become whole? Because we want our families to thrive in the area. So we know if we can lift the tide that it will affect our communities and our nation and help all of us just take it to the next level.

>> I agree completely with you. This is amazing. I mean what a big mission to have started. I mean what what an amazing thing you've done. So, you know, the the big question is why did you start this?

>> Yeah, that's a great question. So, here's the deal. You know, a lot of times we do things in our lives after we have experienced something that kind of takes it to the next level and you get to choose whether you let God redeem your story and everything. So, my story, if we backed up in it, is that um I had infertility in my journey. I eventually got pregnant. Thought it was twins. They at 13 weeks we thought I was going to miscarry. Oh my gosh. And we found out that it was quads. That's four. Oh my goodness. Okay. Yes. So we found out that I was carrying quads and we realized how precious life was and how to go to the next moment and the next day was a real trusting God experience. We walked through our journey. Our goal was 30 weeks. We walked through our journey at 23 weeks. We went to tour the hospital on the Gulf freeway and traffic backed up and a car hit us in the back and I was very large at the time and I was just like, "I don't feel very good." And when we went to the hospital to tour it, I convinced them to check me in.

>> Yeah.

>> I said, "I don't feel good." And I said, "Put me on a monitor." And they did. And when they put me on the monitor, I was having contractions about two minutes apart. Oh my goodness.

>> And then they they got that calm. They sent me home and then we knew to make it to the next day was a miracle.

>> Absolutely.

>> And so we started walking and at 26 weeks my water broke on one of the sacks.

>> Holy smokes.

>> Yeah. And so they took us to the hospital and we were going to stay until 30 weeks.

>> Yeah.

>> And that was our goal. And so that first night I freaked out, which you know, I'm like, the hospital wasn't ready for me. I wasn't ready for the hospital. And and the next morning, my husband stayed with me and the next morning we woke up and I was like, I'm having contractions.

>> Wow.

>> I I'm really having contractions. And the doctor came in and said, "Yep, one of the babies is sticking their hand out your stitch cervix and saying, "Hello, I'm coming."

>> Oh my goodness.

>> And so for us, I was like, "You can't stop it. You can't like make it go away, you know, like put it back." And and he she's like, "No, you're going to have to deliver this baby." So,

>> wow.

>> Um,

>> we had the stitches taken out and then we waited and little Zach came and they put Zach in my arms because at that point medical technology could not save him. They could do that today. Okay. Yeah. And so they put little Zach in my arms and he passed away into eternity and I just held him. Now one cool thing he did do was he grabbed my finger and he squeezed as if to say I'm here mom. And so Zach passed away. And then the question was could I keep the other three cuz I have four, right? And lo and behold it was like check my blood work. I had 104 degree fever by the time they got that back and they uh said she's getting too too sick. And so they said, "You're going to have to deliver the other three." So the other three came. They went into my arms and off into eternity. And that night, I just made a decision that I was going to trust God in this situation because I couldn't figure I hadn't figured it out on my own. And I was just like, I'm going to trust you, God. And in that journey and in that process of healing and taking the next best step, God just began to open doors when I went from asking why to asking how do I survive to ultimately it became how do I thrive? And when I asked that question, God opened a lot of doors because we give him room to work in our lives. So that that took us on the journey of helping people in grief and grief groups. And then it took us on the wild ride of adopting nine children. And then God placed in there this idea of anchor point.

>> Wow.

>> And I was like, are you kidding me? I'm like, I got all these kids in my house. I work in a ministry. I'm like, you got the wrong girl. Please pick someone else. And he just kept on. And then you know when God is working in your life, he just won't let you go.

>> No.

>> Right. And so he kept on and finally I was like, "Okay, I don't know what I'm doing. I just know that I need to be faithful." And so this is ultimately how it started. It started out of a loss and a love for children and a desire to build something that could help families and outlive us and impact people for years and years and years after we're gone. So, where's the Kleenex?

>> Yes.

>> Um, this is a wow. I mean, you know what an amazing experience story that you made it through. Yeah. And have been able to share and help so many others. I um it's it's incredible. In your mission of anchor point, you include faith, focus, and fearless. Why do you think that was what you wanted to base it on?

>> Sure. I will tell you that it's based on God seems to take it may not be in your life but in my life God seems to take everything through me. So like everything we've ever done at Anchor Point has gone through my family. You know when we do camp I did it at home first you know or when we do he's always working that out. And so if you look at those words, faithful, focused, fearless, those are the words that describe me and who I am and how I am wired. And so when you're a founder, those things just kind of roll into it. And I knew that if we're going to accomplish, we had to be focused. If we're going to do this, we had to be faithful to what God was calling us to do. Absolutely. And also steady like faithful like a solid rock because when crisis is around you all the time, you've got to be the calm in the chaos. That's right.

>> And then fearless is we've got to be willing to do hard things to step out in faith when God calls us to do it. And this is just who he's wired me to be. And so that's who that's how the organization adopted it because I'm the one that you know and so that's that's how we landed there.

>> Well, those are three great words to to base something on. I'll tell you that that's you're living proof of it. It's amazing.

>> Um you believe in championing the future of children by educating and empowering the parents because no one is beyond hope. So why didn't you just leave it? When did you realize that that's what you were doing and that you were meant to do?

>> Yeah. So, this kind of this kind of concept is, you know, we could help children. And there's nothing wrong with helping children. But if we want to change and break cycles, we need to help the adults. And you know, what the truth? Here's what the truth is. The truth is is that adults are just walking around with childhood baggage. Okay? And so we've got to get the the adults healthy and then it just flows down through the family. It flows to the next generation, the grandkids to come and things like that. So we know that if we want to protect the future of children, then we change the people that influence the children and and they're not beyond hope. So I go, when we get empowered parents, who can stop a mama bear that loves their kiddos and is powerful, right?

>> That's right. I love that. I love that. And those are things that it's it's so true. Go to the source. Yeah.

>> Because we forget sometimes we want to try to fix the the what's happening, but we we need to fix who's causing it to happen, right? you know, go right to the source of the parents and teach them so that they can continue to teach and raise these children to be productive and faithful and focused and fearless. Yeah. You know, like you're doing that. I love that.

>> Well, it's funny when we go when we do our camps that we do our pathway to hope camps, okay? Parents bring children because they're having trouble with them, right? But when the parent what what I don't tell the parents because they have to come to camp too is that the children do a lot of work at camp but the real change happens over in the parent room and the parents always grow but I'm like you're coming because you're a child but we need to realize that you know God gave me nine children because I have a lot of work to do in me to be the person he needs me to be. And so he just gave me kids that light everything up and I'm like, "Okay, God, let's work on that. Let's work on this." So he's been working on me way more than my kiddos. So

>> I love it. Well, it you know, in that sense, I should have had 20 cuz I got lots of things to work on.

>> Okay. So Debbie, you have a newly re-released book.

>> Yes.

>> It is called The Heart of Legacy. It's absolutely gorgeous. And um we're going to talk about how you can get this in in just a moment, but first of all, what led Okay, you got nine kids. You run Anchor Point. Yeah. Um, you know, you you do camps. You do you have all the you you're you're mission-driven. You're

>> kind of busy, too. Yeah.

>> You're you're a little bit busy. What did you when did you wake up and go, um I need to write a book. Just come on. Pile it on. Pile it on. What What led you to write a book about this?

>> Well, I you know, I've had no plan in my life to ever write a book.

>> Yeah. Does anybody?

>> Yes. I don't like grammar and the thought of English. You know, I'm an engineer by training.

>> Oh my good.

>> Yeah. This is not on my radar. And when God said, "I need you to write a book." This was six or seven years ago. And I was like, "No way." And he's like, "Yes." And so my obedience level was I will at least just dump words on paper for you. That's what all I can give you right now. So I just dumped all these words on paper and prayed about it and just dumped it in there. And I actually called it at that time. I was like, "This is my gift to God. I don't know why I'm doing this and I don't want to be doing this, but I'm going to do this." And I just dumped it on paper, closed the computer, and put it away.

>> Yeah.

>> And said, "Great. I've been obedient. Check mark. Let's keep going." Yeah.

>> And off we went. And it just sat there.

>> But in my mind, I'm like, I know I need to finish this book. I know I need to finish this book. And it would just come up periodically. And I was so busy. Life just kept going. But about a year and a half ago, God was like, I need you to get the book out and I need you to finish it.

>> Wow.

>> He said, "Now's the time." And I'm like, darn. Okay. I'm like, "Do I even know where the file is of what I wrote down?" And I'm like, "How am I supposed to do this?" And so, as you know, God is really wonderful when he gives you something to do if you will just lean in. He will open doors or put people in place to help you.

>> Exactly.

>> So, he put some people in place that had experience with books that would handhold me and I gave them my stuff and they said, "Okay, you have to lay it out totally differently." And I'm like, "Really?" And they were like, "Yeah, and here's how you need to change it." And so this is the ultimate creation of that thing that started and and I really think the goal here is it is it is taking my story which I don't you know when we talk about losing the boys and stuff like that I that's part of my story but I've lived with it for so long I don't really I don't really think it's really that amazing because it's just my story but like when someone like you hears it it's like oh my gosh how did you do How do you survive? And people walk away with hope in hearing that story. And so God's just like, it's time for that story to be out there. And it talks about the starting of anchor point. It talks about just the whole journey. And then how you and I can go on that journey, too. Yeah. And so that's kind of how it came to fruition. So I just in my mind, it's just my gift to God and I'm putting it out there and whatever he wants to do with it, I'm just like I'm I'm buckled up. I'm here for the ride.

>> Absolutely. Yeah. So, this, you know, to me, this this is a book of of a little bit of anguish and inspiration almost. It's this full journey.

>> Yeah.

>> That you've been on. This is really I can't wait to read it. I cannot wait to read this.

>> Um, how long So, how how long did it take you to write it? Once I got once I get well, we're about eight years in now, but it really once we pulled it out and we started working on it, it really only took us with the help of people, it really only took us about I don't know three months, four months to get it into its final form. And we landed on first third is my story. So it's like whatever we don't cover here, if you want the rest of the dirt, it's all in there. the rest of the story and then the middle section is all about how you and I how you and I can be focused, how we can be faithful and how we can be fearless. So tips for how we can do that. And then the last third of the book is just wonderful stories of life change of people who have been just transformed through the work of Anchor Point. And so that's that's you know how it's laid out. But I love that it's practical, too. Absolutely. And there's great easy steps in there for people.

>> Good. Cuz we all need steps.

>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like one of them is just breathe.

>> It's like that's

>> I love it.

>> I'm like that's very practical. I need that right now. So

>> Okay, so we are back. We have been right here with Debbie Simmons. She is the founder of Anchor Point and um we've been talking about her amazing journey that God has put her on. It's incredible, very inspirational, amazing. Um and we've just started talking about her brand new book that has just been released, The Heart of Legacy. So Debbie, you say that struggles can become the very foundation of your legacy. Why do you think someone's legacy is so important?

>> Oh, that's here's here's the deal for me anyway is that I believe that God wants to redeem our struggles. Um what happens in our life is when we run into struggles, we begin to separate. We begin to isolate and then we the thoughts in our head just take us on a horrible spiral. And this is this is Satan trying to take us out. Okay. And community of believers is how is the only way out. It's when I can tell my story in a safe place and people still look in my eyes and go you are precious. Yes. You are worth it. You have something left in you. and call that out of me that I can begin to heal. And so if we go back to like that night when I am sitting in the hospital with these boys and all this stuff that's processed, you know, whatever had happened in my life before, I just remember going, life is clearly different now.

>> Absolutely. It'll never be the same.

>> Yeah. And so it was like what I did here before was one way, but everything now in my eyes and everything was like I need to be about eternal things.

>> Yeah.

>> I need to be focused on eternity. And I hadn't before. It was like this whole other realm kind of just opened up to me. And so what happened was I became extremely intentional about what am I going to do? you know, first get through healing, do all these things, but what am I going to do with my life to be a legacy, live a legacy right now. So, I am creating and crafting my legacy that stays after I'm gone. Yes. And so, we, you can literally go through life and let legacy just kind of happen. Yeah. and you end up with something at the end, you know, and or we can go, okay, God, how can you use me? How can you take my story? How can you do the things that you want to do with me? What mountains do you want me to climb? And all these things and be very intentional. I had a friend who had um brain cancer and when it was diagnosed, I sat it was interesting. Uh he goes, "I don't really like you most of the time." I'm like, "Why?" And but anyway, I was like when I sat down with him, I was like, "You have a unique opportunity right now. Brain cancer wasn't your plans and stuff like that." And I said, "But you get to make a choice right now. And you get to choose how you walk this journey out. And the way you walk it out will impact your wife and your children for the rest of their lives."

>> Yeah.

>> And he wasn't very happy about that at first. And I'm like, but this is the choice we get to make. And so, do you build legacy into those people and teach them how to work, you know, walk through your struggles and do it well and fall more in love with Jesus and let God take that story and touch people. And I can tell you even now, this has been multiple years, his life is still impacting people.

>> Absolutely.

>> And you know, he was like, I don't like you. And I'm like, I know this is the hard part. And but I'm like, let's be legacy bakers. Let's be builders right now. Let's be intentional because God has put us here for a reason, put us here for a purpose, and we don't want to miss it. No.

>> Yeah. And so, in the end, we'll have something wonderful to leave. And it might be as simple as being a mother and doing it well. And that's not necessarily simple, but you know, the hardest.

>> Yeah.

>> Don't lose focus on the fact that the everything is important. It may be that you get to build a ministry. That's great. Yeah. But day to day, faithful walking, trusting God. People watch. And unfortunately, it's in the struggles.

>> Yeah.

>> That people see clearly.

>> Exactly.

>> Because true character comes out. So this is why legacy is so important to me and it's the heart, you know, the really the heart behind it is let's do this. I don't want I don't want you I don't want anybody else to go through life and just miss this opportunity because it's too important.

>> Absolutely.

>> And you know the the amazing one of the amazing things that if people who go through like what you've gone through sometimes they don't make it out of it because they think I I don't I don't know how to move forward and and and that's the human part going I'm I can't do this. I can't go forward. I I don't know what to do with this and I don't want to.

>> Right.

>> Um but there's a responsibility like you're saying. Yes.

>> Um we have that choice and it is a huge fork in the road.

>> Yeah.

>> Of life.

>> Um and we can choose to either come on God. Okay. Yeah.

>> You gave it to me. Let's do it. Let's do it. How do you how do you see me getting through this? just bring it, right?

>> Or we can go, uh-uh, nope. I I'm, you know, and that's the sad part because they'll never they may have now missed some of their biggest blessings in life, right?

>> You know, um,

>> and and how they would have been a blessing to others. And that's where you have been this could you have even imagined

>> no

>> that your life that you'd be touching this many people, that you would be changing the world literally.

>> Yeah. It's a blessing to be able to do that.

>> It's amazing. It's amazing.

>> Um, okay. So, Debbie, how can people how can we buy your book?

>> Well, it's on Amazon and it's a bestseller thing.

>> Nice. It's beautiful. It's just beautiful.

>> Yeah. So, Amazon's the easiest place to get it. They can also go to the website which is thedebies.com and there's a thing on the book there and some other books that have come out that they might they might be blessed with. But I do have one tip that your people may want to take away. Yes. You when you're talking about people being stuck, okay, that's my deal. I don't want people to be stuck. And you know, the number one question that rises up in people is this question when we're in a stuck situation is this question of why.

>> Okay? Why me? Why God? Why this? Why now? And God is whispering to each one of us to lay down our why. Will we lay it down? Because that's my And when he asked me that in the hospital, I was like, "No, I like it. Why should I do that? And he's like, give it to me. So, this is where we learn to trust is when we give him our why. And then he taught me the question I need to ask is how do I survive?

>> Exactly.

>> Okay. Yeah.

>> That is breathe and take the next best step. And when I am obedient in that, he faithfully meets me. Obedient that faithfully meets me. And that's how healing happens. Which then gets us to the question of how do I thrive? So those are the why to survive to thrive questions. Those are the things for your listeners and stuff like that. That's the questions we have to practice. Absolutely. That creates legacy.

>> And it and it's it's like sometimes people say, "Well, I don't want to question God, but we're supposed to."

>> Yeah.

>> I'm like, he says he'll give us wisdom. So I'm like, "How do I get through this? Because I can't figure this out. It's too painful. It's too this. It's too or it's like how do I get through this at anchor point? this is big next thing you want me to accomplish. I don't know what I'm doing and how do I get through this? And you know, he will give us wisdom. And that's I just think it's our learning our obedience and our faith muscle. He meets us and then our faith muscle and he meets us and now we have strong faith muscles.

>> That's right. I like it. I like it. big celebration.

>> I want you to tell us the biggest thing that you've learned about yourself through this journey that God has put you on from that night at the hospital.

>> Yeah. So certain definitely those questions why to survive to thrive because I use those all the time. But I think also is that you know there is nothing that he will ask me to do that is not for my good. Okay, it may not feel like that at the moment, but that it's for my good and I have a wonderful opportunity to participate in his story and my story feeds into that and that is a privilege and an honor to be able to do that. So I think, you know, to realize that it's really cool that he thinks I'm good enough to be able to use and like, you know, it values me and that I can do these things and each of us can do that and we need people challenging me and you to rise up and do the things. So I just think learning to be courageous and brave in this fearless kind of concept.

>> Oh, absolutely. It's it's just amazing. Um, Debbie, you know, what do you think would be your advice to especially young mothers who feel like there is just no hope?

>> None of them can.

>> Yeah. I would say if you're a young mother, just anybody struggling in general is that your daddy God sees your situation and that we if we could just focus on remembering that the God of yesterday was faithful and he's the God of today and he's going to be the God of tomorrow and he gave us 66 wonderful love letters to tell us we can trust him and that you are seeing me and you are heard. You are not forgotten and that he loves you. He sees your preciousness and he knows your value and your worth. And when your daddy God looks at you, he smiles.

>> Yeah.

>> And he says, "You're my girl. You're my guy. I got you."

>> Yeah.

>> And we can rest in that. So fall fall in love with him. Lean into that is um the only way I know how to do it.

>> Absolutely. I love that. What do you What do you think your children think and they've lived with I mean you're their mom. I mean, how crazy that you're doing all of these amazing things. What do they think about everything that that you've been doing and what a great role model you've been for them.

>> Well, some days I'm I don't think they think I'm a great role model yet because they're some of them are teenagers still. So, they're trying to decide if I'm, you know, Absolutely. So, but I think the ones that, you know, my oldest child is 34 this year. Um, and my youngest just turned 20. So, uh, my oldest one, the first thing they did was they got the book to figure out what was written about them in the book. I want to know, Mom, what was in the book? And I'm like, you'll have to read it. And but they but my oldest one, he said, "Mom, I just want you to know that I really appreciate like all the the heritage you're placing in us and you know that you were steady, you were faithful, you were fearless, you know, you were focused because my kids all came with trauma and so we have to fight uh for them." And I believe God's writing wonderful stories with them. And so I think deep down they they know and at different points it just the awareness comes. But I tell people the brain's not really fully developed till 26. So uh we're waiting for some of it to kick in. But you know I think they know they're deeply loved. They may not be totally happy with me at the moment. But um but in general I believe that my job as a parent and this really let me off the hook too. Yeah. My job as a parent is to plant positive seeds in my children.

>> Yeah.

>> Hope they germinate. Pray like heck that they do. And then the other thing I'm responsible for is leaving a bridge to Jesus.

>> Absolutely.

>> Okay. Those are the two things that I can control. I can't control any other thing that they do. And I can be the steady person. So, one of my children spent many years on the streets in Houston and drug addiction and all this stuff. And you know, she's recovered now, been sober for many years, but you know, the one thing she knew is that I would be there in the end and I would help her figure her way. Exactly.

>> And so if we've planted that in them and we've connected with the heartstrings, no matter how difficult the journey's going to be,

>> Yeah.

>> they're going to come back and you're going to get the opportunity to still lean in. But that's part of where I grow and get healthy, too, right? so I can continue to invest in them or the girl at Anchor Point or my staff, whoever it is is what we get to do.

>> I love that. I love that. Okay, so Anchor Point, y'all are always accepting donations and volunteers and there's all kind of ways for people to do that. How do we get involved with Anchor Point or how does somebody say, "I can't I don't have time or I I'm not able to, but I want to donate." How do they do that?

>> Yes. So the biggest thing is you can always remember the website anchorpointus is going to be like the central place to go and I would say you can look at to volunteer but I would go hey even if you don't have a lot of time you could simply get on our 911 text list and when there's a crisis they text you and you get to jump in and you get to be on the front lines praying for life, praying for issues, praying for whatever needs to go on and then they send you updates and you get to do that. And that's wonderful. So, you know, it doesn't matter how much time you have. You I mean, literally, you get the text and you're just like, "Dear God, intervene in that situation." Whatever it is, because I believe that is the biggest answer to a lot of things, right? Absolutely. And if people have a day, they can come work the gala. If they have a lot of time, like in the summer, we have camp in the summer and they have a week, then that would be lovely. if they want to do weekly and do some of like the life on life case management type things there's opportunities for that so I would say there's a ton of things to do it's like just jump in lean in and explore and start somewhere and then if you go that's not my favorite thing I'm like going try this over here because this might be exactly where you want to be and what we want to do is you're uniquely wired and you have different passions and we want put you in your passion and sometimes it takes a little time to try that out but trying is the biggest thing and letting God kind of mold that. So I would say that would be um some of the best ways to get involved and then on that same page there is donate now and one of the things that we absolutely love and just gets our heart excited is when people say you know what I want to be a monthly giver because I want you to know I'm your partner. I'm here long-term and we have people that have given for 15 years and it doesn't have to be big amounts. It but it says to me, hey Debbie, go ask God what the next big adventure is because I got you covered over here. And I'm going, thank you. What can we do God? How can we expand? And so I would say just jump in, see how you can do that. And there's all kind of creative ways to give through planned giving and matching gifts from employers and stuff like that. And our staff can walk you through that. But every penny is an opportunity to put hope in to one of these clients. Hope makes all the difference.
