Welcome back to a Celtic State of Mind. I'm Paul John Dykes, and that is Lawrence Connley. He looks as though he's in a confessional booth. We might get to the bottom of that at some point during this show. And we should also be joined by Ian Conroy and Liam Carrian. I thought it was Wednesday today. I don't know if that's the stress and anxiety levels from the weekend still kicking in.
Lawrence, let's talk about the weekend. Uh, that's what we do. That's what Celtic do. That's a tradition. We never stop, they used to say. Um, how did you find the weekend's action?
>> First half was pretty poor, let's be honest, you know. But Martin's made the changes. Martin does what he what he does. He just wins. Two penalties not given.
>> H. And I thought the the injury time wasn't that long. I thought seven. Do you know there's been quite a lot of injuries and time wasting as well as goals and subs and we only get seven minutes. And it was interesting to see the pundits come out and say, "Oh, Celtic always get the injury time." And I can't remember the Celtic fan who put it out on social media. We've actually get on average the least amount of extra time of all the teams in the top flight. You know, it's not like us to get, you know, certain teams get 98th minute penalties for almost nothing against United to rescue points. But uh, yeah, look, second half completely different. Tect's really coming on under man. Uh, yeah, it's another win.
Let's start off with that point you make then because it is so easy, uh, Lawrence, for a narrative to to start, um, and it's agenda driven because what then happens is, and I've seen this, you know, on a smaller scale online, somebody says something and they just say it, they put it out there. All right, baseless information, they fire it out. And if they're on a big enough platform, and some of these people are obviously, uh, on a platform as big as a national broadcaster, then enough people will believe what they said without fact-checking it. That's the world in which we live. You've got all the ability in the world to go and fact-check these things yourself. But you know what? That that will take five minutes. So you just run by what the person has said. Neil Macan said it, Chris Boyd said it. Therefore, it's true. Now, actually, um, at the end of the day, what we have seen is we've seen a pressure movement on the officials in the past in Scottish football. A movement where you watch this. This is now going to be the new drum that they bang, Lawrence, between now and the end of the season. It will be constant. There will be a pressure on the refs and on fire constantly to watch out for this added on time, and it's going to happen. So let's see that seven minutes, and it should have been seven plus more because Sutton was, uh, surprised it was only seven. That will become four, that will become three when Celtic are playing. You know, we make the least amount of injury time out of all the teams. You know, probably the most time wasting against us. But yet again, two penalties not given, two handballs in the box.
>> Not much has been over it. Nothing. And if you look since Danny Rose came in, you know, the decision against St. Nun Livingston, you know, the penalty go two up with the benefit of numerous replays and angles. You know, the VAR, uh, official couldn't see it hitting the Rangers player's hand, you know, and and the only explanation we got from Willie Colum was on, and that's just a mistake. Well, after watching it from numerous angles in slow-mo, freeze-framing it, you still can't see it. I think [snorts] we know it's more than a mistake, and it's been pretty consistent since then. Then you look at the Austin trusty sending off at time castle, and a week later Tamir's on a yellow card who was the last man down, very similar, only there's no covering player, the opposition don't even get a free kick.
>> Correct.
>> So, you know, our officials applying different rules?
>> Well, we're in a situation.
>> Yeah, we're in a situation where I think as a football club, we need to be stronger now. I remember the red card against Yang at time castle when Brendan Rogers came out and he spoke out, and I and I applauded him at the time, Lawrence, for speaking out against that level of, let's call it incompetence at this stage. Uh, bias is another view. And obviously after that, we noticed a change. We we noticed a change in standards. Willie Colum, um, has obviously taken over from Crawford Allen and has implemented a different approach to Scottish refereeing, and I don't think he's gone far enough. But as I say, it is a narrative. You've got to step up as fans, and if you've got a platform with any kind of an audience, and thank you everybody for tuning in. We're only four minutes in, uh, and we've already got our first thousand viewers. So, thank you all for that. I'm going to have to work out who the 40,000th subscriber was yesterday because it did happen. I'm going to track back. But you're right saying, you know, like as fans, a platform, you have to step up. But I think that now the clock step up.
>> Yeah, absolutely.
>> Where's Michael Nicholson in this? Where's Brian Wilson in this? Do you know that they're watching them? They must be aware of what's happening. They should be issuing a statement, you know, and saying, "Look, numerous penalties are not given. Rules seem to be applied differently than a far officials. What's going on here?" You know, we're in one of the most exciting title races for a long time in Scotland, but you know, the the VAR could certainly tip the scales one way or another.
Well, I'm just going to bring, uh, Liam, because we've got the two sides of the the Celtic scale here. We've got the darkness and the, you know, the soft lighting of the confessional booth at the Skyllock. I didn't know he did a Tuesday afternoon confessional. I'm sorry to disturb you, Lance. And then we have the color and the flare of Liam Caran coming in with something that looks like it would not look out of date and out of touch on Campos, the old goalie. Uh, you've got to talk us through this one, mate. Who's that?
>> Bless me, Father, for I have terrible fashion sense. Um, it's a Mexico goalie shirt. Um, it's a recent one. I think it was 2020, maybe 2022, but it was, um, it was part of like a '90s revival collection, and this is Mexico one. So, it's inspired by the original Campos ones were all Nike, I think, but but it was inspired by by that kind of,
>> that dramatic flare that that the man had for his his goalkeeper shirts. Um,
>> was he any good in goals?
>> Do you know, for a wee guy, he was actually a pretty decent keeper. Um,
>> we always talk about his his jerseys and his style, don't we?
>> 5'10" or something, but he was phenomenal reflexes.
>> Yeah.
>> Was he one of the goalies, Lawrence, that used to go rogue, go up top?
>> Oh, yeah. Used to work, dribble out the box and stuff, but but he used to go up and it was. Did he hit the penalties as well?
>> That was that was the Paraguayan keeper.
>> She and Huga. Listen, we're getting all, um, you know, reminiscent of World Cups. That will come in the summer. There's a lot of business to be done between now and the summer, that's for sure. But Liam, you've you've joined Lawrence and I talking about maybe it's a mastermind thing. Is he on a mastermind chair? Specialist subject: Scottish referees. Is that what it is, Liam? Cuz that's how we've opened this up. [laughter] That's how we always open this up. We were just talking there, Liam. There's not been a great amount made of the two penalty shouts against Kelly. Uh, but loads and loads have been made of this rogue injury time, or as one punter on TikTok called it, overtime. You should be working overtime on your RTK ceiling, young man. Anyway, Liam, what do you make of both of these issues, the penalty shouts and the added time?
Well, I'll come to the penalties in a minute, but first of all, I, uh, I just want to hit you all with a wee statistic that I'm actually working on a blog at the moment about. So the claim is that Celtic are getting artificially helped with extra injury time when we need goals. Right?
Now, the team with the highest average duration of a match, including injury time, in the league this year. Number one is Livingston with 95 minutes and 7 seconds. Number five is Celtic with 94 minutes and 4 seconds. Second, which let's face it, is what they've got used to these days, is Rangers. 94 sec 94 minutes and 58 seconds. Aha. But they might say, "But what happens about when it really matters? What about when they're needing a goal?" Right? So the average amount of injury time added onto a match when the team needs an equalizer or a winning goal. Celtic: five minutes. Rangers: 5 minutes 27 seconds. Arrest my case.
Well, we were just talking about, uh, facts, Liam, information, and how people create a narrative, put it out there on, uh, a platform with a lot of viewers, and all of a sudden it becomes the truth to many. And it's about time. Obviously, we can do what we can on here. You just did. You just absolutely, uh, clamped anybody who's claiming that Celtic get favored in that kind of scenario. Um, but it's up to the club as well, Liam, isn't it? To be stronger. I mean, we know, and we've criticized them around our communications, but it is up to the club to step up and say, "Actually, this," because we're talking about mainstream broadcasters who are still allowed to cover Celtic from the stadium, and they're putting this narrative out there. Um, and they're doing it virtue of the likes of Neil McCann and Chris Boyd, and there's no fact-checking whatsoever going into this. Liam, the club have to be stronger. Do you agree?
Yes. If if our media don't have the guts to do their job properly, then Celtic need to start insisting that it's done properly for them. Um, we need, I mean, it's easy for me to say as, you know, someone who represents fan media, and we all do. Um, but, you know, why are Celtic excluding us and letting in people like the Sun and the Daily Record who are actively antithetical to what the club is all about and are actively helping to spread these lies that are getting people all wound up right now. I don't want to get melodramatic, but it's happened in the past before. People have been seriously hurt because they've been all wound up, and the old Glasgow saying, "All dressed up and nowhere to go," and it's because of all this frankly piss and wind that we read in the in the newspapers. It gets people wound up. It gets people angry, and it's all lies, and people get hurt because of it.
They build it up into a frenzy, Liam, and an emotional frenzy. And we know that Scottish football is emotional enough. It's a bit of a powder keg, particularly at this moment in time. It's a three-horse race. There is no doubt about that. Lawrence, talking about ruffling feathers, I had the audacity yesterday when asked the question, who our main challengers are. I said Hearts. That bothered a few people yesterday of the correct persuasion. Who do you think, or do you think it's a neck-and-neck title race?
So I was talking to the good friend about this the other day. See if it had been for for William Nancy, we'd probably have another 12 points on the board and be romping to the title as usual. VAR probably would, uh, wouldn't have been making as many questionable decisions. So I think two things have made it the title race. The fact we brought Wilford Nancy in, and the VAR officials are kind of tipping it. And I suppose depends what way they tip it. Will they tip it to Hearts or Rangers? I don't know if they have a preferred side.
I do. I do. Um, I do think that they've got a preferred side, Lawrence, but it's we're going to have to combat that. We know it. We we are going to have to combat it. But in relation to the the Nancy fiasco, debacle, whatever you want to describe it as, Liam. Um, I now look back on that and I, I agree with Lawrence. You know, had we kept Martin O'Neill, and you know, he has shown, not only in the, the two short spells this season, but across his, uh, Celtic career as a manager, that he wins games, he'll find a way. It is a mentality, um, of winning. It's a winning mentality. And on the thumbnail today for this particular show on YouTube, I've used the image of Callum McGregor after the game. I don't know if you've seen the unique angle, guys, of McGregor just getting caught up in the emotion of everything after the game. It was phenomenal. This is what you want to see, Liam. Now, you know, when the chips are down and you're facing a defeat like that, and you, you pull a victory out of the mix somehow, there is an effect on on the team morale, isn't there? There really is an effect on it. Now, we've done it. I wouldn't have chosen for this to be the case, but I think we needed, um, a jag in the arm, if you say, of whatever it is that you get from this adrenaline, momentum. Um, and I think we needed it, and we've had it, like we've had three big doses of it in the last three games. [gasps] Um, but does that now settle down, Liam? Does that give them the self-belief that I think I think they were lacking a bit of that, believe it or not, because of the chaotic nature of the season we've had up until now. There is no way that you can come out of a game at the weekend and not feel elevated by it. Regardless of how bad we were in the first half, right? Regardless of the dodgy refereeing decisions, we came out and we fought, and we just w we wouldn't. As an used to say, we never stopped, and we got what we deserved at the end. And I'm going to say something very unusual here. I actually agreed with something that Keith Jackson said the other day.
>> Oh my words. Right. Yeah, we're going back into the confessional booth then, man. [laughter]
>> Um, no. He said that, uh, yeah, Celtic keep winning games in the last, last seconds, whatever. This can't go on indefinitely. [laughter] I agree. Can't.
I don't think we're going to play as badly collectively for the rest of the season as we have in the past three games. So, I think we have had this. The difference is we played on the first half at the weekend. I think we were probably worse than Rangers were in midweek against Mull. Yet we still came out of that game with a win. They ended up dropping two points there. That's the difference.
>> Mhm.
>> Both, both Celtic and Hearts, as well, have had games where they've been rank rotten and they've still got a result. The last three games Celtic have done just that. And that's the difference, right? We play, they were equal. I think they were equally insipid performances. If you compare Rangers at Fur Park to us at, uh, Rugby Park for the first half at the weekend, I think they're similarly poor performances, but we got a win and they didn't.
That's title one in form, as far as I'm concerned.
Absolutely. And and and Lawrence, go and show us that Hagar the Horrible tanker that you've got there. Is that holy water you're drinking out of that? Look at the size of that bad boy.
That's one brought home from the Skyark. I'm no joking, Lawrence. I thought you just grabbed a vase that was sitting next to your iPad there. Fantastic. No, I agree, Liam. It can go on indefinitely, but I do think that there's a positive side to it, you know, where that I call it the galvanizing effect, but you know, if you've been through the kind of tougher, the tougher elements of this season as a team, Lawrence, and you come through it and you have the elation and the emotion that follows that, uh, you know, after that weekend performance, then I do think that it almost turbocharges your season. Uh, we're talking about Celtic coming alive, to quote a former manager, at this time of the season, and I do think that we're going to find a rhythm, Lawrence, you know, because it's been so stop-start with the changes in manager, but also since Martin come back in, the influx of new players, we haven't got a rhythm as such, and although there's going to be rotation, of course there is, we're still in three competitions. I don't think we've actually found our best strongest 11 and we've not got into a rhythm yet.
I think a lot of it's, you know, we've got three first-team starters, you know, out with long-term injury for most of the season. Now, Engles, he's out to end of March. So, it has been a really bad season for injury for us. I tell you what, the Oaks and Callum, they look great together second half.
You know, maybe that's, you know, get the Oaks and that's what who we're going to see in midfield, and then it'll be one from Neon or Hitat at the moment in time. Uh, but yeah, it's the players get more used to each other, you know. I think, uh, he, he's the best right back at the club before we far. It's great to have Sarra back. You know, you've got that backup for KT. So, it's the, it's getting the front three right, and I think Seb has certainly, he's come on leaps and bounds, isn't he? Under a nail. So, who, who do you play in the right and who do you play through the middle now is a big question. Is he an actual fallen completely away because he's been in the squad, then he's dropped out?
He'll be on the bench on Thursday night because he's in, he's in the Europa League squad. So he'll be on the bench, Lawrence. But you raised three really important points, and you know what, we'll do, we'll strip back and we'll look at all three of them. The first one is the front three and Ael right. The second one is, you spoke there about Rio Atati, uh, being an option in the midfield, and the third one is the Ox, and also, you know, the impact of him being there on Callum McGregor. So let's look at those three points, and I'll start off, Liam, with Rio Atati, one of our specialist subjects. Now that Lawrence is back in the mastermind chair, he's flipping from bro to Roy's like Shawn Maloney this season. Liam, let's start off with Rio Atati. Um, massive fan, huge fan. We all know the ability that he's got. He is the epitome, the definition of a player looking as though he's checked out. That was one of his worst performances of the season there. What's going on with Real?
I think that's just it. I think it's no, it's no fault of his own, but you know, sometimes when you're when your head is elsewhere, no matter how hard you try, it's just not going to happen for you. And I think that is where Real is at the moment, and Dyson's no far behind them if we're being brutally honest. You know, a year ago, they would have been two of my first names on the team sheet.
Now, I [clears throat] think they're both needing dropped. I would I would drop Hitati and bring, um, the Oux in, and I would, uh, I would, uh, drop to make room for Teneecti at the moment, based on the current form. And benching them might, benching them might give them that wee bit of hunger. It might give them that bit of fight because Bryson still got his World Cup players to play for.
Yes. Is Rio completely out of that equation from your end, Liam?
It's looking that way. The pro, the difference is with Dyson's got a a distinct role in that squad, playing playing on the left or playing as a striker. Whereas Hiti, you know, attacking mid, he's got MMA, he's got, um, what's his name? The boy that used to play for Real Madrid, uh, um, I forget. Anyway, he's got two real quality players ahead of him just to get into the squad, and there are other Japanese midfielders who are up and coming as well. Um, so, yeah, he's, he's looking unlikely, unfortunately, but you never know. I mean, we're [clears throat] only a couple, he's only a couple of serious injuries away from getting a call-up. So,
Well, the thing that you need to do if that the opportunity arises is to make sure that you are fit and firing. And he certainly is not firing at Lawrence. And this is a player that, as I say, he's his ability is undoubted. He has shown that, um, you know, in the past, but unfortunately, and this is a discussion I had with Kevin Graham yesterday, there's there comes a point in the season where it's about who you can trust. Who can you trust, uh, to start the games? And I'm looking at people who I'm thinking to myself, brilliant off the bench. The best example of that at this moment in time is James Forrest. Brilliant off the bench. The other point I was going to bring up actually, Lawrence, and I want to hear people's thoughts on this in the comments, which I'm about to go to at the moment, is, uh, Lawrence Connley just said that Aralo is the best right back at the football club. Do you agree with that? Alistar Johnston obviously will be back at some point before the end of the season. He's been out for large parts of this season. Um, do you agree? Will? And the, I guess the second question on that one is, when AJ comes back, how do we fit both of them into the team? Because it's all about quality for me. You know, get as much quality as you can, shoehorn, as much quality as you can into the side. How do you make that happen if both players are fit?
Going to start off with Daniel Hughes. Welcome to the show. You're on the X platform. Had some fun and games on there over the last 24 hours. Um, hi Sheamus, if you're watching. Time for Celtic as a club to call them out. I agree with you wholeheartedly, Daniel. I think we need to be stronger as a football club. And I'll tell you something, when it comes down to it, um, you look at what we've got in in relation to a fan base who want, I think largely, to come together. I've had a few people disagree with me on the socials. There always will be, but I think largely the fan base wants to come together. We want to get as many fans into the stadium as is possible. Um, and then you look at the club and you say, "Right, how can we bring this all together?" Well, we do have platforms. We do have a media team of 30. We can get that buzz back. I mean, that that unique angle yesterday, Lauren, showed that with one short clip, you can get the buzz back. And that's the media tapping into what we did on Sunday, putting out as a video to the audience, um, online, the online audience. And then it starts to get the fans buying back into, you know what, we're all in this together because there's been so many points of the season when it's not felt like that, launch.
Yeah, and I think a lot of that's been generated just for the silence. The club, you know, the lack of communication.
You fill the void, don't you? If there's a silence,
you know, and I think, you know, Brian Wilson's been reaching out. I've not been involved, or I know anyone has been at the meetings with him. So, I'm not too sure if there's a change in tone in the communication within those meetings. If anything's changing for the better, but it's something that the club need to figure out how best to do it. You know, they could certainly get everyone on board if they they called out these bad decisions that have been happening for the last few months. You know, another two penalties not given when we're struggling. [clears throat] You like you, and you know, Martin was right. It'd be as well a blue card, you know, at Time Castle. But why is it left to the managers? You know, it was Brendon that called it out at Time Castle before. Where's your chairman? Where's your CEO? You know, they should be putting together the list. You know, there's pressure on the on of our officials. You've touched on it a certain amount to give Celtic less time. You know, can we look at as much time as us? They could have scored.
Exactly. Right. You know.
This is the this is the big point, uh, Lawrence, and by the way, I think the other point that you've got to look at is when Celtic equalized, Kmanik then started getting back into the game at that point. If you're talking about ascendancy and pendulums and momentum, so at that point, yeah, you know, we did not, we we were not given a cheat code for seven minutes. It was up for grabs, wasn't it? You know, it's it's down to both teams. Who wants it most? Who's got the desire? And the big thing is who's got experience to do this? And Celtic have the experience, and and out the three at the top of the league, really experienced team of handling this pressure, you know, knowing what it takes to win a title. So, you know, hopefully, you know, the club do put some pressure on. You'd like to see a statement from them, and I think the team will start to come together. You know, Aux looks a superb signing. Absolutely superb. If they can get him up to speed, be ideal. And you know, we've touched on May and Hitat. They need to do something or they both need to kind of drop from the squad. The performances, especially from Rio, has been really poor. So
you can see him dropping out the squad, you know. Would Macau give you anything better in that position than Rio? I don't think he'd be giving you less, you know. So it could be Real could find himself bench for a while, and it could be Macau and Negron. I'm not sure, but it's a dilemma Martin's got, isn't it? How does he get him start playing? I think actually made us picked up a wee bit since Seb's performances have got better. So kind of happier on the left, left hand side with those two.
They change shape because we're in a situation now, Lawrence, with regards to the midfield. Let's talk about the midfield. I think the midfield's been the biggest issue under O'Neal. If we're going to look for a criticism, I don't think the midfield is there. I don't think that they're orchestrating games. Now, you mentioned the the change in Call McGregor when Oxley Chamberlain comes into the action. The change for me was quite a simple one. He started carrying the ball. He started picking the ball up in defense, and instead of passing it back to the center half and then pointing it out wide, he just carried it. Now, I don't know if that's due to because quite frankly, and I'll ask Alan Morrison the next time, um, he's on. I find that McGregor's distribution is good, but what range of distribution are we looking at? Because most of the passing that he's doing that will give him a high percentage of completed passes or five-yard passes to these center half back once, you know. So, is he looking at a winger and thinking I can't find him? How often have you seen Callum McGregor dinking the ball over the top of a defense and then somebody ko a lot of the time try to get on the end of that? That that's probably a big part. You know, who's our best center forward, who's best in the right, who's there for the passes, especially with the opposition pressing us so heavily now. You know, you're looking for that ball over the top, and with the heavy press, a lot of midfield gets missed out, but we need someone to hit. I think on the left, you know, Seb's come on through the middle. I think it's got to be big time for me just now from what I've seen. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. On on Fawn. But in terms of the midfield, right, we're obviously we're sticking to a 4-3-3. Call McGregor spoke about, and it changes depending on if you're in defense or in possession. But he spoke about too much too soon under Nancy, try to change the system. And I, I get that, and I agree with him wholeheartedly. But we're now at a stage, I, I believe, where you can click in a new formation, be that a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2, and it would happen a lot more comfortably now that Martin O'Neal's been in the door for a while. Uh, second time round, of course, but it would also let you play your inform players, more inform players, Lawrence, in so far as you look at Tyrion and Sach, don't want to drop either of they two. Is there a way playing both of them when you think about Alistar Johnston come back, coming back to full fitness? I would like to play him and Aro because they're both quality players. Is there a way around that? Can you push Alistar Johnston into the right side of central defense? Can you put Aro a wee bit further out wide? These are the things that I think will O'Neal will be considering, and I think we'll see it between now and the end of the season, Lawrence, rather than you know, asking yourself, is Luke McCau going to do it? I think O'Neal, and it's been mentioned on here in the last week, O'Neal kind of fancies him more right-sided almost winger, doesn't he?
I think when AJ comes back, I'm not sure we'll change formation, but you can maybe play around further forward or AJ further forward. Have the two of them on the right. Right wing options aren't as strong as a left wing just now. You can hold them on the park. Both great engines up and down, great distribution. I, I think it's that would sort out a problem if it works. But you know, we wanted a goal-scoring striker, and we need to see that one of them is going to be it. You know, both strikers, you know, they've come here for a bit of redemption. They've not had the greatest records immediately before coming to Celtic.
You're talking Adam and Fara.
Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> So, why why is he and not even in the discussion, guys? Why isn't he even in the squad? What, what is going on there? Because for me, and by the way, a big fan of Chanchara, I thought his assist at the weekend was brilliant. He's, he's holding up play was brilliant. The best striker, the best finisher that I've seen is Ian Nacho this season.
We might see him in Europe. That's the thing. He might have a cracking game in Europe and plays he plays his way in. You know, he's been injured. He's coming back. But for me, I'm thinking big Tom Sara. I think he's the, I think he gets the jersey just now, and it's his to lose.
I was surprised. I, I was surprised he was on the bench, if I'm being totally honest. I think part of that was Martin's looking at Europe.
>> Potentially.
>> And he really fancies something doing something in Europe, and he, you know, if we win against strong position, you know, so I think he's had one eye, one eye on that, you know, I think Mark probably sees this as his last year as a manager, and maybe Europe's something that's unfinished for him as a manager.
Right, um, I'm going to bring in Snuffkins backpack because I'm not sure what, what your hilarity is. Is it, is it Lawrence Connelly's oversized jug? Is it the fact that he's either playing mastermind or he's in a confessional booth? I'm not sure. So, so give us a shout and, uh, let us know what you're saying. Right, let's bring in some comments. Then we'll, we'll move on to the Europa League game on Thursday night. Um, if you are not going to the game for whatever reason, you might not be able to get there, you might not be able to get a ticket, then come along to the fan zone because we put fan zones on at Baris Art and Design for the big games where it's not always easy to get a ticket, and we're doing it on Thursday night, and we're doing it with Jackie McNamara, who's our special guest. So, we will have an audience with Jackie McNamara leading up to the game. So, if you want to get involved in that, and your free pies and your music, your live music, where a mutual friend Lawrence and I, it's Danny Kelly.
>> Who used to be on Axom, who has an Axom appearance to his name way back when.
>> We had from Del Keith.
>> A couple.
>> Yeah.
>> He done a session with us actually. He came to Sterling and he did a s a session with us, which is still on YouTube, not filmed unfortunately. And I listen back to those sessions that we did back in the day. They were tremendous. I mean, Liam Mcandles came in, Kevin Miles, um, Danny Kelly, Kevin McDermott came in, which was a massive coup for Axom, a hugely talented musician and a great guy as well. And Danny Kelly now is helping us out at some of these fan zones. So, I'm looking forward to that. Um, but there's another option. You can go up in the maze, right? This is this is another option. The ticket link is on the, uh, on the video description underneath this video. They can go and sit in the maze and watch the game with Jackie. Just just sit there with Jackie Mack and watch a game against Stuttgart, a team that we played in that run to the 2003 final. Um, so, yes, we're making out, we're making a really good night of it, and, uh, there are a few seats available. So, if you want to get involved, the link is underneath the video. But let's talk Stuttgart on Thursday night. Um, and there's a lot of really good comments coming through. So let's work some of these in. Going to start off with Magnet CSC. Um, a longtime viewer of Axom. Welcome to the show on YouTube. This is indeed when we come alive. However, St. Martin needs to install some confidence in Trusty and Scales. They have both seriously been flaky these last few games. I noticed it with Trusty more. Um, I did notice it more with Trusty. I love the fact that Scales had a wee, um, two and fro with a ref, and then after the game with Neil McCann. Uh, there's only going to be one winner if we man's like scrappy do. He loves the shouting and the screaming. He loves somebody to hold him back. But if it comes to blows, Scales, come on, he's going to win that.
Um, yeah, I get what you're saying, but I also think Liam, they've been very good in Europe this season. Trusty. I mean, yeah, he was poor at the weekend. He's misjudging the bounce of the ball on the plastic surface. He's getting ripped to pieces for the first goal. I get all this, right? But see, in Europe, he's been excellent this season, I feel. And his partnership with Scales has been one of the main reasons we're still in this tournament.
It's it's one of them. I think that when Celtic play badly, there are certain players that stand out for some reason. I don't know if it's just because people have it in their head that there's certain players they don't like, or if it's just the way we shape up that certain players stand out more, but I, it seems to be Trusty gets gets it a lot. Scales has gotten it pretty much for the whole time he's been at Celtic. Um, Casper Schmeichel has been getting it recently, forgetting the fact that he made a really important save at 2-0 at the weekend where if that ball get in, it was game over. So, you know, um, he was also left a standing lot of tube when the ball smacked off the crossbar from that free kick, but we won't talk about that.
He had it covered. He had it covered. [laughter]
Um, but I, there is just this kind of tendency to get down on certain players when, in in fairness, I think the whole team are being, are rank rotten at that moment in time. So, you know, we can all have bad games, and we all know that players are capable of better, and trusting and scales have both shown that in Europe, like you said.
So, I, I think we just need to accept that sometimes if players are having a bad game, it's no, it's not the individuals, it's the team performance we need to focus on.
Without a doubt. And I'm thinking about the the options, if you like, um, at this moment in time that aren't great options as backups. So, we're we're starting with trustee and skills, no doubt, and that's probably the reason why, um, we've not really seen, we've not seen Benjamin Arthur, for example, a player who came in as cover in the defense because he's not registered for the Europa League squad, but Dane Murray is. So, he was on the bench at the weekend there, and he is your right-sided backup. Who's your left-sided backup? Well, it's trusted, but he's playing on the right. So, who's the third choice left-sided backup? Kieran Tierney, and he's playing left back. So, this shows you that we don't have a great deal of cover, um, in these positions, and both of those players, I believe, will start without a doubt on Thursday night. Now, I've got Danny Black coming in. Big shout out to you, Danny. You're on the YouTube, and you've been watching for a month. So, welcome to a Celtic State of Mind. Um, big announcements coming in 2026. Some of the stuff we're working on is huge. We'll share it when it's ready to go. Been watching for a month. Been my first live. Casper will cost us. But why is Ross Duhan never mentioned as Sinalo has cost us also give Duhan a shot against Stout right? This is an interesting one because Lawrence and I disagree on the Sinalo, um, argument of whether or not he should get in ahead of Casper Michael. I say he shouldn't. Lawrence thinks he deserves a chance. Duhan doesn't get a mention, lawn. He's come in, he almost replaced Scott Bane as a third choice goalie. Never, he's never played since he came back. He's never played this season. I don't think he will though. I think that it is a, it's a shootout between Schmeichel and and Sine Salow, and despite what I would maybe even class as an error, uh, with a second goal at the weekend where he should be dealing with that better. It's looped over him. He starts at the on Thursday night as well, doesn't he? Or does he?
I think at this time in the season, Martin Bushel, unless he's got a couple of horrendous errors in a game, you know, or a bad injury. I think Martin's made his decision. You know, for me, he should never have been brought in back for a cup final by Brendan. There's been a couple of times he could have been dropped. Brendan stuck with him, and it looks like Martin's going to stick with him. H Ross coming in at this stage of the season. Big ask, isn't it? Not having played a lot of pressure. So, I, I think he'll stick, stick with Schmeichel now until the end of the season. Barn, you know, an absolute horrendous collapse in a game or or an injury, and stop with Casper.
I think so. I think so. And then that gives you three of the back, the back five, if you like, for Thursday night, doesn't it? Casper, Trusty, and Scales. And then we look at the, the fullbacks, Liam. And it gives us an opportunity to talk about two guys that are on loan because obviously Sarra came into the action at Bunk Park. Nero was one of the heroes. Uh, I've been calling him a cult icon ever since Sunday, and obviously it's made its way all the way to Mexican TV. Um, complete with the, the commentary. Um, these two guys for me though, Liam, we had a discussion about this yesterday.
These two guys are on loan. They're players who, if we were to acquire the registration permanently, you're looking at seven or eight million quid each, probably there or thereabouts. I mean, they're out of favor at their parent clubs, but if you're going to bring them to the football club, your outlay is probably 16 millionish plus decent wages. However, if we want to progress as a football club, then why not have Aralco and Johnston as your two right backs, and Sarra and Timmy as your two left backs? Surely, in order to progress as a football club, that's what you want.
Yeah. Yep. Yep. Um, it's interesting you you refer to Rajo as a cult figure because my my Ranger supporting mate called him something similar. I think it was cult something he said. Anyway, um, the, uh, sorry, but, uh, the, um, the thing is that we need to get quality upgrades, like you say, and also it's not just the quality, it's the versatility as well. Sarra, I don't think would look out of place in midfield if need be. Um, Tierney can can step into left-sided center back if we at any point choose to go to a back three. Um, Aralo has shown that he can offer something in an attacking sense as well as a defensive sense. So, I could see him deputizing for Yang on the wing at some point. Um, or maybe even replacing him if Yang's fully off in the summer. We don't know. I hope not, because he's starting to show a real, real bit of class now. Um, so, yeah, I really think that, uh, they are two quality additions, not just be, not just for what they offer at fullback, but they're just two good players to have in the squad, and they upgrade what we currently have.
Yeah. I mean, you imagine a situation, Liam, where you make those two moves permanent. Alo has become a fan's favorite very quickly, I think. Um, and I love the little bit at the end of the game on Celtic TV where O'Neal gives him a dig, brings him right back down to earth. Uh, I didn't actually think he played that that badly in the first half, but if that was your right side and your left side, and you then look at the, the central defensive situation, for all intents and purposes, your two left-sided central defenders are actually trusty in scales. So, whoever's got the jersey keeps the jersey, another one's the backup. Your right-sided defender in the central central defensive area is Cameron Kickers. So, really the only area that I don't think you're ultra strong is probably on the right-hand side of the central defensive area, where you could bring somebody else in to push Kickers for a place in the team, and also the fact that Kickers generally, um, gets injured at some point during the season. That's the one area that I think we're missing. I don't think Dane Murray's that guy. Steven Welsh isn't that guy. He is going to have a career elsewhere. It might be at Motherwell, you know, permanently, or somebody else might come in on the back of his performances at Motherwell. Let's not forget to lose a UNI were interested in Steven Welsh. I predicted two or three years ago Steven Welsh would play for Scotland. I've looked foolish, uh, for most of that period, but it might still happen. And then the only other area of the team then to get up to that point where you've got two, two guys that are good enough to start, Lawrence, is your goalie. For me, I think the goalie becomes a priority in the summer.
Oh, but without doubt, you know, Casper's for the off, depending on who a new manager is going to be. I'm sure his his idea about F players he need, he need to bring in, but goalkeeper, we need someone, and I thought Sallallow showed enough last season that he could have been given a run, developed his confidence, and developed as a player. Probably take a bit of a knock on his confidence getting dropped for a cup final, you know, he had done anything wrong to get dropped. So, it's going to be a call for a new manager. We definitely need a, a strong keeper in. I'm, I'm not too sure of the trend, you know, I think Joe Harky was a good few years.
Casper came in at two years older than Hart, you know, and I don't think Casper ever had the heights that Joe Hart had in his career. This almost a retirement home for EPL keepers, you know, last year or two. I like us to to get a keeper, experienced keeper maybe 26, 27, you go, right, that's that position for four, five years with nothing to worry about there.
Has um Facilas Barkas given us some kind of cause for concern because he's like he's the only goalkeeper that we've spent big money big money on you know Fasa Foster I think was two and a half million quid when we finally signed them had him on loan a few times but we don't tend to set spend big money on goalies if you think about it so is that a bit of a PTSD from the Bass experiment that went wrong?
Um, I agree with you incidentally, unless somebody comes along because listen, I'm not erasing history here. I'm not airbrushing the fact that Smel was an excellent goalkeeper when we signed him. He was a brilliant signing when we brought him in. He was a massive part of last season. I think the injury has curtailed curtailed that. I think we would have got another season out at a level where we're not constantly talking about mistakes that he's making because as Liam quite rightly says and again generally speaking he's making one or two really good important saves as well. But that there will come a time where again recruitment and scouting has to uh you know come to the four in the summer and we need to identify the best goalie who is available.
Um, perhaps Snuffkins backpack uh was referring to this we message. Thank you for supporting the channel. Snuffkins backpack axom fan from the early days. Keep up the good work and I appreciate that. And one of these days we'll be maybe standing at a fans at a live event and somebody whisper in my ear, I'm Snuffkins backpack and I'll understand and so will he. No one else in the room will, but welcome to the show and thank you for uh supporting what we do as well.
We've got Pete Mc G. I think Aroco is at least on a level with AJ and I'm a massive fan. I agree, Pete. I'm I'm in agreement with that. And Ian also comes in. It's a shame that AJ never played under Nancy, did he? >> Because that was the big link up. They had played together at Montreal. Imagine the boost if the board announced that Green Brigade coming back.
Listen, I'm not hiding my view on this. Uh I got the opportunity to give them a shout out when appearing yesterday on Sky Sports. Some people don't like that. I think you you know what, you've got to contribute to the narrative. We moan and we complain about the mainstream media putting narratives out there. Go on the mainstream media and give them your own take. That's what I do. And um yeah, gave a big shout out to the game brigade because I agree with that comment.
I agree that we're in a situation now where it comes down to margins, Liam. Now, let's not rewrite history here. Do we constantly go on about um a club like no other? a fan base that um is known globally. You know, the European Knights at Celtic Park. It's not the disco lights that Maldini and Messi and all that we're talking about, Liam. It was the fans, right? It was the supporters. And why on earth if we have got the ability to get them all back in the stadium and behind the team between now and the end of the season, you know what? Whatever else you've got an issue with, let's come back to that at the end of the campaign. Let's all pull together, come together between now and the end of the season, get everybody in there and whatever margin, if you believe in energy and margins um of influence, etc. Whatever influence the fans can have, make sure it's maximized by get the Green Brigade back in. There's my take. Liam, do you agree?
Yeah, I think that and the thing is it really shouldn't be that difficult if we if the club just came out and said, "Look, we'll let the Green Brigade back in and we'll review it at the end of the season." We say, "Okay, fine. we will park, not put off, not cancel. We will park um you know temporarily our issues with the board and we'll let it go to the end of the season because at the end of the day we can't get any more players in before the end of the season anyway. So the only addition we can make in terms of our strength going forward for the rest of the season is to get Celtic Park bouncing again and that needs a green brigade. >> I agree with you. I agree wholeheartedly and whatever the issues are, let's come back to that. Let's come back to that argument and that discussion and that engagement. Um, when the dust is settled and when hopefully we have a leak title in the cabinet.
Now Ian has come in. He's made a good point because we've had a couple of people coming in making donations to the channel. The weider is the second one. H love Axom Hail Hale from Sunderland. Hail hail to you. But I think that Ian Mack makes a good point. We're going to take the seven pounds. We're going to donate it to lawns for a light bulb. Is there an energy crisis there? Should we chip in for a bulb? And maybe a tankered. A tankered so that you don't have to use the the the vase when you're having >> more tax on tankers, mate. >> Maybe you could. Hello, Darkness. My old friend says, "Look at that. Look at the size of that." Is that one of the ones you put in the freezer? >> Get in the freezer. It's proper stein from the Skyllock. >> A Skylark Stein. Drink responsibly, kids.
Kevin Graham comes in. We should be looking at the fall goalie in the summer. [laughter] You're at the wind up. Kev, he was good at running this the card school though, wasn't he? That's for sure. Jungle Lion always a pleasure on the YouTube. Why does Hard's got why does he have such a big seat at Celtic?
Now, this is the thing, right? and he agrees obviously we need a full rocking stadium but we are in a situation where football clubs need a head of security of course they do we all know that Lawrence right but in terms of influence the head of security doesn't have autonomy on decision making what they can do is they can consult with the board they can consult with the executives at the at the football club but they can't be saying right they're not getting back in right and it cannot be on his head he can advise but there people who can overrule that. And I think you just got to grow a set. If you're the CEO, the absent, silent, mute CEO, you've got to grow a set, right? And make the right decision for the football club, not for somebody's ego.
Yeah. Listen, you've touched on it. It's it's down to Michael to make the decision. Whether what the club's saying right about the council and the safety committee, I have no idea. Whether Har Graves is putting the block on, I have no idea. Why do we have no idea because the communication is so bad from the club? You know, leave hit the nail on the head. You know, if you can park it to the end of the season, there's obviously issues, ongoing issues between the club and the green brigade, but you know, how many home games have we got left and it is going to be small margins. If possible, park at the end of the season, let them back in. But I think it's become a battle of egos, hasn't it? Very much so. you know, the Green B saying, "Well, you can't ban us. We won't take a ban." And it so I think both sides kind of hopefully Brian Wilson does have a chat with them, but both sides need to come to an agreement and say, "Look, this is part to the end of the season." Uh, but we'll resume from from where we left off, but for the benefit of the team and the club to allow them back into the end of the season,
>> right, let's view the Green Brigade for a moment as a CSC, right? registered C CSC. My biggest issue here is collective punishment. Now, I'm not going to say that uh the only CSC at Celtic Park who have members who might misbehave or the Green Brigade because that's simply untrue. There are members probably within every CSC who will misbehave. I mean, I'm a member coming through from F and the misbehavior that I saw from a young age was uh life affirming. That's how bad it was, right? uh it made me realize how not to conduct myself at the football and I'm pretty sure everybody's got um examples of this, right? But my issue is this. Let's say you go to the game, Liam, as part of a CSC and you travel to the game on a bus on a supporters bus and that's an education in itself as well. or you get back to the bus after the game and let's say two or three because in the case of of the incident at the Faler game I think what we're talking four or five individuals were involved in a skirmish right >> I think it's five five arrests but I think they're already under a suspended sentence I think you know was like the suspended sentence kicked in I don't think it was all >> you're talking about a suspended sentence for the green brigade though not not for five individuals right yeah >> but five individuals >> misbehaved on any Celtic supporters bus or club and the entirety of your club or bus are banned. I mean the collective punishment and Lawrence brings up a point there saying that let's say they were on a sticky wicket. Let's say they were on a final warning et you brought that up.
>> I I don't know. I heard it was kind of suspended for last season and I know we lost what 500 tickets for the semiro because of pyros or whatever. That's not >> that's not why this this ban's in place. So you could look at all the instances where let's say the Green Brigade have gotten in trouble um or you know resulted in a fine from UEFA etc. But you've got to balance that way what they bring on in a positive sense. I'm not just talking about the atmosphere and the color and the chanting and the t force that go global. They're that big. I'm also talking about um you know supporting the underprivileged, supporting the homeless, the food bank collections. Liam, everything that we know is good about this group of fellow Celtic supporters, right? And I and I just think that at this stage, the collective punishment is wrong, but the length of this ban is is not proportionate either. I think you know what, if you want to punish them, you've done it. They've been punished. So, like like I say, and I ask you in the comments section, 2,000 of you tuning in this afternoon, is it for the best for Celtic, forget Eagles, forget what you think about the board versus the Green Brigade, is it for the best for Celtic as a football club to have them missing from the remaining home games? Yes or no? Because I don't think it is.
Liam, what's your take? All it does, all the current impass does is further divide the club. It puts the division between, not all fans, I know because there are some fans out there who think the board are right to do what they've done. I'm not one of them. Um, but this divide, getting the Green Brigade back in is a first step to healing it. Now what Lawrence said there I have no reason to doubt it that the green brigade might have been on a warning because of something that happened last season be it pyros or whatever but again that goes back to the lack of communication we don't know because the board don't talk about these things see if before the fal game the green brigade had been told look if any there was any trouble today you guys are out and you're out for months you know dare I say things might have impacted a we bit differently or if something had kicked off. I think the Green Brigade would have made sure they got better footage of it to prove their innocence.
>> Um, >> here's here's an example of the club's communication. Right. Here's just a a simple example, and there'll be there'll be people in the comments section with their own examples. So, we believe Axon believes that there has been a fan media ban, but we don't know because they've never told us, but I know that the ban exists because we've never been invited back and no other member of fan media have been invited back. So the ban definitely exists, but we've never been informed of that ban. We don't know why we've been banned. We don't know how long the ban is for. So this shows you how poor the club is when it comes to communicating. And let's not forget this and let's underline it and highlight it with fans because that's what we all are fellow fans right so Hamilton songs comes in on the YouTube afternoon troops. We are where we are because of the dermits or because of dermits board. Let's see if Martin can pull it off. But no matter what, they all have to go. Big changes in the summer. Let's hope >> you know because you touched on the length of the ban. I think this is where the Eagles have come in because it was initially a six game ban and the Green Brigade said, "Well, you can ban us." And you still see them at the games. And I think that's what changed it to an indefinite ban, which is like 19 games or something now. But are they banned if they're still there? I'm not too sure. So I think this is the >> I think this is the big clash between the clubs and the Green Brigade. Well, we banned well you kind of b up and they go you're not serving you banned then so we're not letting you in you know it's kind of >> is that speculation though Lawrence because how can how can we say that >> been banned you would have been back in >> No I'm talking about what you've said there in terms of the green brigade still being in the stadium that's speculation >> well you you see the banners you see some members of the green [clears throat] >> there's banners there actually after the first I think two games of the ban there there was people in the seats they then had to put the the barriers on the seats to stop people sitting after it. And that's when they announced saying that it's now going to step up to an indefinite ban. If the green brigade had accepted the six six game band, do you think you'd have been in after six games? You know, there was something that kicked on to indefinite ban. [sighs and gasps] [snorts] >> Right. Okay. But we would be speculating and I'll tell you why. Because the club hasn't communicated this. >> Oh yeah. Yeah. Communications, >> right? >> Absolutely terrible. But but regardless of all of that, for me, you know, I think it should be parked to the end of the season. >> It should be what's best for Celtic. Now, what gives Celtic the best chance of winning the league? >> Full house, >> best atmosphere in the country. That's what gives us it. >> It's that simple. And I think it's an absolute b. You know, the board won't back down, but it looks like the green brigade won't back down. And you're you're losing this. This should be what's best for Celtic. There always has to be a a focus on what's best for the football club. And this is the thing as well where people say to us, you're always criticizing Celtic. No, we're not. I'll never criticize Celtic. I'll criticize people employed by Celtic. I I'll criticize people who are on the board not doing their job. You'll criticize the left back who's not playing well. You'll criticize a manager who's not got a runny results. That's football. That's always been football. It always will be. But I'll never criticize Celtic. The reason that I criticize all these individuals is because it's Celtic. Not you know this is the thing that you've got to separate the club at times from the people who find themselves in very influential areas of that club and positions at the club.
Paul Mlan Seco at Ibro Stan Ma then Chuni second half unless Dyson is playing a blinder as for real we can't afford a passenger David Bole also comes in to say we will not come alive unless we get the fans back in and Celtic part bouncing has given our opponents an unnecessary advantage the board are simple and self preservation mode we spoke many many times about the psychology of the co season and how it affected Celtic negatively and whenever you speak to an ex player you ask them the question Neil Lennon's spoken about that very fact that the absence of Celtic supporters in the stadium um worked against us so I mean there you go there's a study in self harm if you think it's a good idea to keep them out wai any relation to do way you know who I uh what I found out because it's 20 years since Clyde knocked us out the cup remember >> oh yeah was David Deian debut. >> I went to the game with the king of Fingless that day, mate. Mark McCabe. Yeah. >> Does he have a royal title or is that just a nickname? >> As far as I know, it's official in Fingless. [laughter] >> I don't I mean, listen, I don't know sometimes if you're winding me up once. Right. So, Dway, I found a wee bit more information about Dway just this week, just at the weekend. Did you know who his agent was? Maybe this is common knowledge. I'm going to ask you two guys. Do you know who his agent was when he signed for Celtic? >> No. >> No. >> I'm going to guess Dudu Dahan because he's dropped a few duds on us down the years. [laughter] >> It wasn't him. I'd love to say it was. >> I'd love to say it was. It was Ramon Faker. [snorts] [laughter] >> Big Ramon. Ramon. >> Big Rammon did that to us. >> Oh dear. He's also appeared on Axon previously and he was brilliant and he said that he wanted to be the CEO and when he was asked about would you be the CEO of Celtic he said absolutely give us a call top goal scorer last season FIFA this season who's kidding who you're talking Dyson Ma I think there's a big issue there in relation to the bid that almost took up the German football it's affected him I I don't think there's any doubt that that's affected him no doubt at all Mary Moines uh by the way 2006 people are watching this show. That was the year Clyde beat us, was it? No. Or was that 2005? >> 2006. >> It was It was 2006 cuz I went to I went to I moved to Japan a few months later. I remember >> that's how bad it was. You just thought I'm out. I'm out. >> That's it. Leave the country. [laughter] >> As far away as I possibly can. Mary Moines. H I dropped both too, Liam. Uh you'd think that they both show their qualities on the pitch should they be wanting away. And it's it's all for me. It's all about who who can you trust, right? And a big part of that sometimes is work rate over ability. And the example that Kev gave yesterday was Barry Robson, Paul Hartley. The example I gave was Brennan Rogers's first season back, James Forest. You you just go to somebody you can trust. You go back to that. Well, at this moment of time, Rio and um Daen unfortunately are not within that category of player. So, they've got to drop to the bench. They might come in, they might contribute, but they've got to drop to the bench for me.
So, very quickly then, if we've decided on our back five, I think we have, but correct me if I'm wrong. Um, who else plays on Thursday night? If if it is indeed the the typical 4-33 Lawrence, >> Callum, could we go to Bernardo and Ne? because I think attack is just so far off. It's just now, you know, just struggling in midfield. I think for options on the left, I probably start at the I think he does more defensive work. I know Seb's banging [clears throat] form, you know, Sto I think we'll be doing we'll be doing a lot more defensive work up front big time and and wide right. Could JCY give us 90 minutes? I think James A showed at the weekend what he's going to give us, mate. And I think it's a 20 or 30 minute cameo. And when when he's got that 20 or 30 minutes, I think he's very effective. Very effect. And you know, he's good at coming in and closing a game out if if we're in that position. >> And if it's not James, it's got to be Yang then. You know, if James can't give you any 90 young, isn't it? >> It is. >> That's what I would go with. I think midfield were struggling with, you know, they'd signed the Oaks in time for the the European deadline. I think he probably been in the squad but >> without a doubt without without a doubt. Um so the big surprise maybe or the the eyebrow laser would be Bernardo probably from that selection although I can understand why Lawrence would pick him.
Liam, midfield and forward line for you. >> Right, I'm going to come with a left field one here. I would go with McGregor and Negron and Sarra in the midfield. Sarra hasn't played midfield for us, but I think he's got all the necessary qualities to do it. And I believe he is in the European squad, so he he could do that. And then up front uh we go with Yang Tenki and uh big Shvanchara through the middle for me.
