Now, I think it's really important to track the progress that you're making in your business. So, I put together this worksheet to help you review your income and expenses on a regular basis.
Because you get those window cleaners, for example, who might boast about the amazing amount of money they're able to make in a day, but really, what does it matter if you make a fantastic amount of money in one day, but then the next day you don't make anything? Well, then that's averaged out across two days. Or you don't do anything for the rest of the week. That will be averaged out across the whole week. So, I think it's really important to try and be consistent about what you're doing so that average in general is boosted.
So, why not have a regular routine, maybe once a month or every few months even, of adding up all your total earnings, all your total expenses, and working out the difference. And then you'll be able to see what you've earned throughout the month, what you've earned throughout the week, and what that adds up to on a daily basis. This is really important for helping you to see patterns throughout your business from month to month. And then once you build up a few of those, you'll be able to make decisions then on marketing, on um where you want to boost your income, on which months you tend to struggle, and which months you do well, and so you can plan for that much better.
Maybe one month you see that you don't do as much gutter cleaning and other months you do more pressure washing. Well, maybe you could decide to advertise more for a particular service in a particular month and to try and boost that in any particular month.
I always try and bear in mind as well some of the days off that you have to take off, you know, for holidays, even when it's a bank holiday or when your van has to go for anote. Those things will have a knock-on effect on your daily average and your expenses and time that you're not able to actually earn. Those kinds of things. So quite often I'll look at those days like really wet days or really cold days and those are the tough days where it's harder to make that income. So if I can at least go out and earn something on those tough days, I feel confident that that's helped to boost up my average.
Another thing I like to try and do is if I look at a day, um, I try not to finish a little bit early, but if there's one job extra I can do at the end of a day, I know that overall that helps to push up my average. So there's little ways of looking at it that uh doing a review can really help to see how your business is progressing. That can help motivate you and it can help you make good decisions, business decisions going forward on things like advertising.
