Breezy and cool today. But the hottest temperatures so far are coming this week. We'll show you the 8-day forecast coming up.
A breaking news alert here at 4: Metro is identifying the gunman in Friday's gym shooting as a 34-year-old North Las Vegas man. Thank you for joining us. I'm Kirsten Joyce, and I'm Brian Reviews. Now, investigators were first to bring you that news on 8NewsNow.com. We do have team coverage. 8 News Now reporter Nick Summer is learning more about the shooting victim. First, investigator David Charns is live outside Metro Police Headquarters with new information from David about the gunman.
And bringing Kirsten right now, police here at Metro Police are trying to figure out why 34-year-old Daniel Ortega walked into this gym armed with a long gun in the first place. We have some new video to show you of him doing just that. This is from that LDA scene in the northwest valley. This is Ortega coming in; he is armed with that rifle. About a minute later is when he shot a gym employee; he actually chased him through part of that building, fatally wounding him. We learned today that Ortega—sources are telling me that he worked as a bellman at a property on the Strip. The assistant sheriff saying Ortega fired his weapon 24 times. It then jammed. And she says that likely saved lives. Fortunately, this gentleman—his weapon, which actually saved this from being a mass casualty event. Police say right now there is no connection that they can find between that gym employee who was shot and killed and Ortega. Police shot and killed Ortega as he ran out of the gym, right through the front door. Three other people were injured as well. No, I did reach out to the funeral home carrying Ortega's remains today, trying to get a comment from his family. They had no comment to provide. Metro also saying if you're a witness and you were there that day, you have any information about Daniel Ortega or this victim, how they may be connected if at all, to please contact them. We'll have more of those 9-1-1 calls.
