The world will simply wake up one day and realize that the rules have changed, that someone else is writing them, and that the window to do anything about it has already closed.

I want to show you the real architecture of global power, how it is being dismantled, rebuilt, and quietly handed to a new set of hands. I want to show you the mechanisms, the players, the strategies, and most importantly, the stakes. Because this is not abstract geopolitics. This affects every person alive, and the clock is running.
Let us begin at the beginning. Not with today's headlines, but with a question that rarely gets asked. What is power really? For centuries, scholars and kings would have answered that question the same way. Power is land, power is armies, power is the ability to project force and compel obedience. The Roman Empire understood this, the Mongol hordes understood this, the British Empire at its height controlling nearly a quarter of the earth's landmass understood this. Hard power, the kind you feel in your bones when soldiers march through your village, was a currency of dominance.
But then something shifted. Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, a new kind of power began to emerge. The scholars called it soft power. The ability to shape preferences, to set agendas, to make other nations want what you want, not because you forced them, but because you made them believe it was their own idea. Hollywood was soft power. The English language was soft power. The idea of the American dream broadcast into every corner of the globe was soft power. The Washington Consensus, the economic theology that told every developing nation to open its markets, privatize its industries, and trust the International Monetary Fund was soft power dressed up as economic science.
But here is what almost nobody talks about. We have now entered a third era, an era of what I call infrastructural power. And this is where the hidden war is truly being fought. Infrastructural power is neither the hard power of armies nor the soft power of culture. It is something more insidious, more durable, and more total than either. It is the power to own and control the systems through which everything else flows. The cables that carry the world's data, the satellites that guide navigation, the financial messaging systems that move money across borders, the standards that determine how technology is built and who can use it. The rare earth minerals without which modern electronics simply cannot exist. The ports through which the majority of global trade passes, the institutions that set the rules of international law.
Whoever controls these systems does not need to win battles. They do not need to win elections in foreign countries. They do not even need to be liked. They simply need to make themselves indispensable and then use that indispensability as leverage. This is a hidden war. And it has been escalating for decades while most of the world was distracted by the fear of conventional politics.
Let me show you what this actually looks like in practice because theory without evidence is just noise. Consider the Swift financial messaging system. Swift, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is the nervous system of the global economy. Every day, trillions of dollars in transactions flow through this network. Banks from 200 countries use it. Without access to Swift, a country's financial institutions cannot conduct international business. They are effectively cut off from the global economy.
Now, here is the power move. When the United States and its European allies decided to punish Iran for its nuclear program, they did not invade. They did not bomb Tehran. They disconnected Iran from Swift. Overnight, Iran's economy began to hemorrhage. Its currency collapsed. Its oil exports, which required international payment systems, ground to a halt. An entire nation of 85 million people was brought to its knees not by military force but by being unplugged from a financial communications network most Iranians had never even heard of.
The same weapon was deployed against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Disconnect from Swift. Freeze foreign reserves held in Western institutions. Seize the financial assets of oligarchs held in London, New York, and Geneva. The message was unmistakable. If you hold your wealth in the Western-controlled financial system, that wealth can be taken from you at any time for any reason we deem sufficient.
And this right here is where the hidden war entered its most dangerous and consequential phase. Because the response to this weaponization of financial infrastructure was not capitulation. It was acceleration. The urgent determined effort by a coalition of nations to build parallel systems that cannot be switched off by Western decree. Russia began developing its own financial messaging system, SPFS, specifically designed as a Swift alternative. China's CIPS, the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, has been quietly growing for years, and it accelerated dramatically after 2022. The two countries began settling bilateral trade not in dollars, not in euros, but in rubles and yuan. And they began actively recruiting other nations to join their alternative financial architecture.
This is not a footnote in a diplomatic cable. This is potentially one of the most significant structural shifts in the global economy in the last century. The dollar's status as the world's reserve currency, the foundation upon which American economic and political power rests, is being challenged not through argument, but through infrastructure construction.
Let me explain why the dollar's reserve status matters so much, because this is often glossed over even in serious policy circles. When the dollar is the world's reserve currency, every country on Earth needs to hold dollars to participate in international trade. Oil, the lifeblood of industrial civilization, is priced in dollars on global markets. This means that whether you are a Japanese company buying Saudi crude or Brazilian firm importing machinery from South Korea, you need dollars to complete the transaction. This creates permanent structural global demand for dollars, which means the United States can run enormous trade deficits, borrow at lower interest rates than any other nation, and fund its extraordinary military apparatus partly through the privilege of printing the world's money. Economists call this exorbitant privilege. It is the silent subsidy that has underpinned American global dominance for 80 years.
Now, imagine what happens if that privilege erodes. Not disappears overnight. Nothing in geopolitics moves that fast, but gradually. If 20% of global trade begins settling in yuan or in a new BRICS currency or in some future digital settlement system that bypasses the dollar entirely, the consequences for American power would be profound. Interest rates would rise. The cost of financing government debt would increase. The ability to project military force globally, which depends on the ability to borrow cheaply to fund defense spending, would diminish. And the leverage that allows Washington to impose financial sanctions would shrink because the foreign parties can simply route around the system. This is not speculation. This is the explicit strategic goal of a growing coalition of nations and is advancing faster than most Western governments are publicly willing to acknowledge.
But money is only one front in this hidden war. Let me take you somewhere even more consequential, the battle for the technological stack. We are living through the most important technological transition in human history. The shift from analog to digital systems, from physical infrastructure to networked intelligence, from human decision-making to algorithm-driven processes is restructuring every dimension of human life. And embedded in that transition is a question that will define the next century, whose technology runs the world.
This is not a trivial question. The technology that a nation uses to build its telecommunications networks, processes data, runs its financial systems, and powers its artificial intelligence determines at a deep level who can access that data, who can manipulate those systems, and who can shut them down. Technology is not neutral. It carries within it the values, the vulnerabilities, and the access points of whoever built it.
The battle over 5G, the fifth generation of mobile communications technology, was on the surface an argument about bandwidth and latency and the speed at which your phone can download a video. But it was at a deeper level a battle over whose infrastructure would carry the data of the next technological era. When Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, began winning contracts to build 5G networks across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and even parts of Europe, Washington recognized it not as a commercial victory for a Chinese company, but as a strategic penetration of the world's future communications infrastructure. The campaign to exclude Huawei from Western networks with extraordinary diplomatic pressure applied to allies, threats of intelligence sharing restrictions, and ultimately outright bans was not about trade policy. It was about the recognition that whoever builds the infrastructure owns the infrastructure. And whoever owns the infrastructure can listen to it, shape it, and in a crisis turn it off.
The same logic applies to semiconductors, which are perhaps the most consequential physical objects in the modern world. Every advanced electronic system, every smartphone, every server, every missile guidance system, every artificial intelligence processor depends on semiconductors. And the most advanced semiconductors in the world are designed predominantly by American companies and manufactured almost exclusively in Taiwan and South Korea using equipment that only a handful of Western companies can produce. For years, this was simply a feature of global economic integration. American chip companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia designed chips that were fabricated by TSMC in Taiwan and sold worldwide, including the Chinese companies building their own consumer electronics and telecommunication systems. It was good business. It was efficient. It looked like the globalization success story and then it became a weapon.
In 2022, the United States government implemented a set of export controls on advanced semiconductor technology targeting China that represented the most sweeping technology restriction in the modern era. Not just restricting the chips themselves, but restricting the equipment used to make the chips, the software used to design the chips, and critically extending the restrictions to any company anywhere in the world that uses American technology in its supply chain. This extra-territorial reach, the assertion that American law applies not just to American companies, but to the global supply chains that touch American technology is a stunning demonstration of infrastructural power in action. The intent was clear, to prevent China from developing the advanced semiconductor capability that would power the next generation of military systems, surveillance infrastructure, and most critically, artificial intelligence. Because AI is increasingly understood not as a technological convenience, but as a fundamental determinant of economic productivity, military capability, and political control in the coming decades. The nation that leads in AI will have decisive advantages across nearly every domain of competition, and advanced chips are the foundation on which AI is built.
China's response has been to dramatically accelerate domestic economic development, pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into building an indigenous chip industry. The results have been mixed. The most advanced chips China can currently produce domestically lag behind the global frontier, but the direction of travel is unmistakable. And in the meantime, China's been quietly stockpiling the advanced chips it can no longer easily import, building reserves against the day when the supply chain might be cut entirely. We are watching in real time the fragmentation of what was once a unified global technology ecosystem into competing technological spheres. And the consequences of that fragmentation will shape the world for generations.
Now, I want to take you somewhere few people go when they talk about global power. I want to talk about geography, not in the old-fashioned sense of mountains and rivers and strategic passes, but in the new sense, the geography of the invisible, the architecture of the unseen systems that move information, energy, and resources across the planet.
Consider the undersea cable network. Right now, at the bottom of the world's oceans, there are approximately 500 active submarine cables carrying roughly 95% of all intercontinental internet traffic. Every email, every financial transaction, every video call, every intelligence communication that crosses an ocean travels through these cables. They are extraordinarily vulnerable. A single anchor or fishing net can sever a cable, and they are increasingly contested. Reports from military and intelligence agencies in multiple Western countries have documented Russian submarines and research vessels mapping the precise locations of undersea cable networks in the North Atlantic. The unspoken concern is obvious. In a major conflict, cutting these cables would be devastating. And fixing them takes weeks.
This vulnerability exposes something profound about the nature of modern power. The systems we depend on most completely are often the systems we protect least carefully because their very seamlessness makes them invisible to public consciousness. We notice the internet when it goes down. We do not think about the cable at the bottom of the Atlantic that makes it work.
The same logic applies to satellites. The global positioning systems that guide navigation, coordinate military operations, synchronize financial transactions, and increasingly guide autonomous systems of all kinds depend on satellite infrastructure. The United States GPS system, Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou system represent competing technological architectures for the control of positioning data. China completed its BeiDou constellation in 2020 and it is now the primary navigation system for Chinese military and commercial systems and increasingly for the nations that have adopted Chinese-built infrastructure across the global south. Again, the pattern parallels systems, competing architectures, the systematic reduction of dependence on any single power's infrastructure.
And then there is the question of rare earth minerals. The 17 elements with exotic names like neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium that are essential components of permanent magnets, electric motors, wind turbines, advanced military systems, and the electronics that run virtually everything in the modern world. China currently controls approximately 60% of global rare earth mining and roughly 85% of global rare earth processing. This is not an accident. China made a deliberate strategic decision decades ago to develop this dominance, absorbing the environmental costs that western nations were unwilling to accept domestically. The result is a choke point of extraordinary leverage. In 2010, during a maritime dispute with Japan, China temporarily halted rare earth exports to Japan. Japanese manufacturers who depended on Chinese rare earth for their electronics and automotive industries were suddenly staring into an abyss. The dispute was resolved, but the message was delivered. Depend on our supply chain and we can turn it off.
This is the logic of infrastructural power. You do not need to threaten war. You simply need to make yourself so embedded in your adversary's supply chains, financial systems, and technological infrastructure that threatening you means threatening yourself. It is a strategy of mutual entanglement, except that one side of the entanglement has far more leverage than the other.
Now, I want to address something that is often missing from these discussions, the role of the global south. Because one of the most significant and underreported aspects of the hidden war for global power is the fierce competition for influence across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. And the fact that this competition is genuinely being lost by the West in significant areas.
For decades, the Western development model, air-conditioned on governance reforms, loans from the IMF and World Bank with structural adjustment requirements, the whole apparatus of the Washington Consensus was the only game in town for developing nations seeking external financing. It came with strings. It came with requirements to open markets, privatize state enterprises, adopt Western legal standards. Sometimes it delivered real development. Often it delivered debt dependency and resentment.
Then China offered something different. The Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013, eventually encompassed more than 140 countries. It offered infrastructure financing, ports, roads, railways, power plants, telecommunication systems with fewer conditionalities, faster decisions, and a Chinese government willing to take project risks that Western development banks would not touch. The terms were not always favorable. The debt arrangements were often opaque. Some projects were genuinely exploitative, giving Chinese companies preferential access to local resources as collateral for loans that local governments struggled to repay. Critics called it debt-trap diplomacy.
But here is what the critics often missed. For many developing nations, the alternative was not better Western financing. The alternative was no financing. Roads not built, ports not modernized, power plants not constructed, economic development stalled while waiting for aid that never came in sufficient quantities or came attached to conditions that local populations found politically unacceptable. The result is that across significant swaths of the global South, Chinese-built infrastructure now carries a freight of daily life. Chinese-built ports handle the exports. Chinese telecommunications networks carry the data. Chinese-trained engineers maintain the systems. And Chinese diplomatic relationships, built on the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, the explicit rejection of the human rights conditionalities that Western donors typically attach to aid, have created a massive well of goodwill that translates into geopolitical alignment at critical moments.
Look at the voting patterns in the United Nations General Assembly since 2022. The degree to which global South nations refused to follow Western leads in condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, abstaining rather than voting yes, or in some cases voting no, was a revelation for Western policymakers who had assumed that their decades of engagement had built durable alliances. It had not. What it had built was an aid dependency that many recipients resented and a sense that Western moralizing was selective, applied to adversaries but not to Western allies committing comparable acts.
The hidden war in this dimension is a war for legitimacy, for the right to define the rules of the international order, for the narrative that explains what the international order is for and who benefits from it. And here we arrive at perhaps the most profound battleground of all, the battle over international institutions and the rules-based order itself.
The international institutional architecture that governs the modern world was largely designed after World War II by a small group of predominantly Western nations at a moment of unique American supremacy. The United Nations Security Council gave permanent veto power to five nations, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China, reflecting the power realities of 1945, not 2025. The International Monetary Fund and World Bank were designed with voting structures that gave Western nations, led by the United States, controlling influence over global financial governance. The World Trade Organization enshrined trade liberalization principles that largely reflected the interests of advanced industrial economies. The international legal frameworks around sovereignty, intervention, and human rights were written primarily by Western jurists, reflecting Western philosophical traditions.
For decades, these institutions functioned imperfectly, contested but functioning as a skeleton of something resembling a rule-governed international order. When they failed, as they often did, the failure was measured against the standard they claimed to uphold. The standard itself retained legitimacy.
Now that legitimacy is under assault from multiple directions simultaneously. From within the United States itself, under successive administrations, has shown increasing willingness to bypass or undermine the international institutions it helped create whenever those institutions produce outcomes inconvenient to American interests. Withdrawing from multilateral agreements, unilaterally imposing tariffs in violation of WTO rules, using dollar weaponization in ways that many legal scholars consider extraterritorial overreach. The message sent to the world is that the rules apply to others, not to the rule makers.
From without, China, Russia, and an expanding coalition of nations are actively working to reform, bypass, or replace international institutions with new architectures that better reflect their interests and their vision of world order. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BRICS grouping, now expanded to include major economies like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, and the UAE, new development banks and financial institutions that offer alternatives to the IMF and World Bank, these are not just diplomatic talking shops. They are the skeleton of a competing international architecture built piece by piece, year by year, and threading through all of it is a fundamental philosophical contest about the nature of sovereignty, legitimacy, and the right of nations to organize their own affairs without external interference.
The Western model asserts the universality of certain values, democracy, individual rights, the rule of law as defined by Western traditions, and the right of the international community to enforce those values even against the wishes of sovereign governments. The competing model, championed most forcefully by China and Russia, but resonating widely in the global south, asserts the absolute primacy of national sovereignty and the illegitimacy of external interference in internal affairs. This is not a debate that can be resolved by clever diplomacy. It reflects genuinely different conceptions of political legitimacy rooted in different histories, different experiences of colonialism and external intervention, and different assessments of what the last century of Western-led international order actually delivered for the majority of humanity.
I want to be precise about something here because precision matters. I'm not arguing that one side of this contest is right and the other wrong. I'm not arguing that Western values are false or that Chinese governance is superior. What I am arguing is that the contest is real, that it is intensifying, that the outcome is genuinely uncertain, and that most public discourse dramatically underestimates both its scope and its stakes.
The hidden war is hidden in part because acknowledging it fully would require Western governments to confront uncomfortable truths about the gap between their proclaimed values and their actual behavior. It would require acknowledging that the rules-based order was always partly a legitimizing narrative for a particular distribution of power rather than a neutral framework serving all of humanity equally. It would require grappling seriously with the grievances of nations that experienced the last century not as the era of freedom and prosperity celebrated in Western historiography but as an era of continued extraction, manipulation, and enforced dependency.
And it is hidden in part because acknowledging it in the non-Western world would require grappling with the failures and contradictions of the alternatives being offered. China's development model has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty, an extraordinary achievement, but it has also produced a surveillance state of unprecedented reach and an increasingly repressive political environment. Russia's challenge to Western hegemony is wrapped in a cynical nationalism that has delivered invasion, atrocity, and economic devastation to its own people as much as to its neighbors. The BRICS coalition shares a common resentment of Western dominance, but almost nothing else. Its members have conflicting interests, competing territorial claims, and fundamentally different visions of what a reformed international order should look like. The world is not choosing between a flawed but functional liberal order and a coherent, viable alternative. It is navigating between multiple imperfect options at a moment when the cost of getting it wrong are catastrophic.
Let me bring this to its sharpest focus. Because underneath all the geopolitical complexity, underneath all the infrastructure battles and financial system rivalries and institutional struggles, there is a clock ticking. And the thing the clock is counting down toward is not a war in the conventional sense. It is a window. The window during which the fundamental architecture of the global order can still be negotiated, reformed, and rebuilt on terms that serve the broad majority of humanity rather than any single power or coalition of powers.
That window is not permanently open. Infrastructure power, once established, is enormously difficult to dislodge. When a nation's telecommunications infrastructure, its financial systems, its satellite dependencies, and its data flows are all routed through systems controlled by a single external power, extricating itself from that dependency becomes extraordinarily costly, technically, economically, and politically. The choices being made right now, in the next 5 to 10 years, about which infrastructure gets built, which standards get adopted, which institutions get strengthened, and which get hollowed out, will shape the options available to humanity for generations.
