How Hotels Make Money From Nothing

I'm booking a room at the Intercontinental in Houston. I'm choosing the room, and normally the room is like they sit, you know, whatever it is. In America, you often get a room with two double beds or two queen beds.

What is it? Deluxe junior suite. And they have these two other categories of room, which are pool access and gym access. They're just rooms that are really close to the pool, or rooms that... Now, those rooms always existed. All they've done is given them a new designator, which means I'll pay 20 bucks a night more for them.

The pool gym on holiday, for crying out loud, right? But I, I'll pay 20 bucks, 30 bucks to be either with a terrace facing the pool or a short walk from the pool because I don't want to wander through the bloody hotel with a toweling robe.

So, what's genius about that is someone had that idea. Now, that's worth, I don't know, 100 million a year to the hotel industry, 200 million a year in terms of just going, "Hold on a second. Rather than describing rooms by the rooms, let's get people to pay a premium for a location." That's money from nowhere. Brilliant.
