To play Rookie mode, you will need a hero deck of 60 cards. Start by flipping a coin to determine who will play from left to right and who will go first. Each player then shuffles their deck and draws seven hero cards. Place these hero cards face down in the seven battle zones in the order in which they'll battle. Players reveal their Heroes one at a time, and the hero with the highest power wins that battle. In case of a tie, the battle is considered a draw. The player who wins the most battles out of the 7 is declared the winner of the game. If the game ends in a tie, an optional tiebreaker can be used where each player draws the top hero card from their deck and plays it in a sudden death overtime until a winner is determined.
In Substitution mode, the gameplay is similar to Rookie mode, but with extra strategic elements involving a hot dog deck of 10 hot dogs for each player. Our Heroes exist because of radioactive hot dogs, and that's also the energy source in the game. After shuffling and dealing seven hero cards face down for the battle, each player draws an extra hand of four hero cards called the bench. Once your heroes are faced down in the active battle zones, make sure you remember them because you cannot peek before revealing their hero in each battle. Players have the option to pay two hot dogs to substitute a hero from their bench into the battle. If a substitution is made, the player draws a new hero card to replenish their bench. Substitutions are limited to once per battle per player. The player who wins the coin toss goes first, but when at least one battle has been won, the player with the most recent Battle Victory goes first.
Each battle in Playmaker mode, the gameplay builds on Substitution mode with an additional layer of strategy involving a Playbook deck of 30 plays. After shuffling and dealing seven hero cards face down for the battle, each player also draws four hero cards for their bench and four play cards from their playbooks. When heroes are revealed during the battle, players have the option to pay the hot dog cost noted on their play cards to execute various plays. You get only one opportunity to run plays per battle, but you can run as many as you can afford with your hot dogs. The same rules from Substitution mode apply for determining who goes first in each battle. Additionally, after each battle, players draw a new play card, regardless of whether they used a play in that battle.
