Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to our lesson for week number six. So we are in our creative literary adaptations with ICT skills empowerment. So for this particular week, we are going to discuss how and why you're going to create literary adaptations but with the use of your ICT skills. So we are going to empower or at least review the things that you already have learned before on how to edit and also why it's important to consider, um, information and communications technology. So are you ready? Okay, I hope you said yes when I asked that. So let's now start.

So from our previous quarter, we have talked about anecdotes. And as far as I can remember, you also submitted to me outputs about anecdotes, which are video anecdotes of your chosen experience from your classmates who had the most memorable experience that is worth to, to, um, to be presented in a video anecdote. So anecdotes and other literary genres that we have discussed have made it possible for us to create creative literary adaptations. However, there is still a better way of interpreting them with the use of varied multimedia formats. So we cannot hide the fact that we really have to go back to the traditional ones in order to understand what is being laid out to us from this particular moment. So right now, we may have our ICT skills, but before, uh, we also considered presenting adaptations without considering those things. So we are very lucky enough that today we are going to use multimedia formats. That's why you have the choice now of what you're going, how you're going to present your creative literary adaptations. So yes, what you're thinking right now is correct. You will really present a creative literary adaptation at the end of this lesson. So let's start.

We have here Paulo Coelho. So from using our the background of our author, which is the biographical approach, we need to understand who Paulo Coelho is. Okay. So Paulo Coelho is the pride of Brazil, whose novel *The Alchemist* became a worldwide phenomenon and one of the bestselling books in history with 190 million copies sold and translated into 80 languages. Imagine that. He's actually a musician also and a lyricist prior to pursuing a writing career as a novelist and was able to publish 30 books. Majority of them are novels. And he also, he's he is also a recipient of international awards which are still about novels. So he won Spain's L best international writer in 2008, Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen Award 2007, Mexico's Las prize 2006, and the American Wilbur Award still in the same year. So who he really is and why are we talking about him? Aside from he is a very renowned person when it comes to writing novels, actually, he's the writer of the story of a pencil or the parable of the pencil that you're going to watch right now. So aside from that, although this is an original work of Paulo Coelho, um, it's I'm going to show you a video that is also a creative literary adaptation using a digital picture story. So I hope you will watch because the content is really the text that you are going to read, and this one is their creative literary adaptation. So they have used a digital picture story. So, Kylie, watch the video.

>> The Story of the Pencil by Paulo Coelho. A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point, he asked, "Are you writing a story about what we've done? Is it a story about me?" His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson, "I'm writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is a pencil I'm using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up." Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn't seem very special, but it's just like any other pencil I've ever seen. That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which if you manage to hang on them will make you a person who is always at peace with the world. First quality. You are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God. He always guides us according to his will. Second quality. Now and then I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but afterwards, he's much sharper. So you too must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows because they will make you a better person. Third quality. The pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing. It helps to keep us on the road to justice. Fourth quality. What really matters in a pencil is not its wooden exterior but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you. Finally, the pencil's fifth quality. It always leaves a mark. In just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark. So try to be conscious of that in your every action. The Story of the Pencil by Paulo Coelho. [Music]

Okay, good job. So class, as you have noticed, um, this group have presented their own creative literary adaptations of the story of a pencil by Paulo Coelho. And we will not, um, delve on what the story is all about because it's up to you using the reader response approach and how you analyze the content of the text. Right? Okay. So what I would just like to, um, to point out is how they made their creative literary adaptation. How they do that is they use their original GIFs, pictures, images, and illustrations. And if there are things or parts of their adaptations that are really not theirs or say borrowed, they try to, to put their resources at the end of the video. So just like last time, I told you, if the content or the illustrations or any part of their presentation is not yours, do not own that as yours. Make sure that you're going to, to, to put right the owner of that one or at least put the link of where you have gotten, you have got the illustrations or the images. So that's the proper way of borrowing. Okay, I hope you do that. So that's it, and I hope you have realized something after watching the story of a pencil by Paulo Coelho because it has a very, very deep message to younger generations like you. You still have the chance to, to correct the mistakes of the past generations. I hope so. And you will not do the same mistakes that the past generations have have done. Well, we cannot redo the past, but you have the chance to do it. And if you ever you commit mistakes, at the end, remember the fifth rule. Remember that you will always leave a mark. So whatever you do has possible consequences, and it will leave there. So I hope you remind yourself that. Okay, let's now continue.

>> The story of the >> Okay, we're done. So basically, I let you watch that, and I will not give you any questions. I gave you the idea of how to make a creative literary adaptation through the story, um, the story of a pencil by Paulo Coelho, but that is really not, uh, the text that you're going to make an adaptation about. So we will go into that later. So I hope you will still watch the video until the very end. So this time, let's talk about multimedia. When you say multimedia, it's multi-media. It's a combination of different media, which is an essential avenue to transform unique adaptations of a literary text, thus making learning outputs interesting and productive. So if you are easily bored, then using multimedia and using your skills in ICT will help you make, um, creative and unique adaptations that will, that will take away boredom. Okay.

So multimedia has its concepts, and one of the concepts is multimedia itself. So anything that is electronic, maybe an application or a software, is used to teach lessons or to further educate learners on a particular topic. It is a presentation of material that uses both words and pictures in combinations of text, voice, picture, or video. That's why it's called multimedia, from the word, from the root word media, and the multi at the beginning. Okay. So let's continue.

Another concept of multimedia is digital storytelling. So using interactive tools to tell a story, and it often uses a combination of multimedia venues to complete the task. That's why it's called digital storytelling. All the multimedia venues that you can use, you can utilize that to make a digital storytelling. So digital storytelling is getting away from the traditional. So it's, it's not just about the audio. It's about the digital tools that you can use on the internet. If that could be animation, with, um, or you make audiobooks, you make moving pictures. Make sure that it's storytelling, then that could be digital storytelling. Okay. So others may ask me, uh, ma'am, do we need a hard copy for digital storytelling? Well, common sense. That's why it's called digital storytelling because we need a soft copy of that. Okay? So I will not require you to, to put that on a CD or what, from the traditional forms. No, you just have to submit that into our cloud storage, which we practice what we known as the Google Drive. Okay.

Now let's go to the second part of multimedia, which is the uses of multimedia and its formats. So one of the uses for multimedia is from audiobooks. So this is very ideal for second language learners. For example, you want to learn Mandarin. So not every school can offer that. It might be pricey, right? Or you want to be learning French. If you wanted to do that, then there are so much applications, um, online that you can use, and it's also applicable with, with our literature. So learning the language or literature, you can also use audiobooks. This is very ideal for second language learners. Another one, it's not just the one us as the consumers of learning, but you can also make your own audiobooks. So make your audiobooks for second language learners or just for the sake of entertainment, then that's also possible. Another one, it's used to compare social norms in different eras, files, and music videos. Well, so like us who are music lovers, those who those people who are music lovers can make use of multimedia to compare social norms in different eras. So if you have listened to a singer who have different albums, right? So we've known so many of them, and one is also known as a music industry, Taylor Swift. So you can use multimedia to use to compare social norms in different eras using song files and music videos, and you yourselves can also make music videos and collect song files using multimedia and compare them. So it will be very easy in your part because you're good with editing.

So now let's go for that multimedia formats from various media includes, first of all, text and graphics. So you cannot omit text and graphics in multimedia. That's the very fun, that's the very basic form of a media, of a medium, I mean, the text itself before the graphics. So you have to consider this because this is the most fundamental one. This is very necessary for its use for slideshows, presentations, diagrams, and infographics. So if you know PowerPoint presentations or or in Canva, right, you can make use of slideshows to present. You also have diagrams or the infographics that that would help you describe or explain about trends and research results, like, um, bar graphs, pie graphs that contain information. That's why they are called infographics. Okay.

So next, we have here the audio, or what we call, we can have here for podcasts and recordings. So, it's very basic. I know it's familiar to you, the audio, but, um, when it comes to to your ICT skills, I think you need, um, a reliable editing software or a site that you can, um, clearly edit the audio for your podcasts and recordings because, I based on my observations from your previous anecdotes and from your, from your, um, digital picture stories when you embedded, um, your lines for your outputs, I've noticed that I can still hear the background noise. I think you need to consider how to, to add flavor or to mix properly, um, the background noise. I mean, the music and your voice to, to delete or to omit the background noises that are so much unnecessary. But there are times that the background noise is, is also applicable to a particular context. But most of the time, based on my observations, they are very unnecessary. So I hope when it comes to considering the multimedia for audio, make sure that that the unnecessary noise, um, will be omitted so that the quality of your presentation will not be, um, forsaken. Okay.

So let's continue with the video components of multimedia. So we have here the screen captures, the lecture captures, and the animation, which are the examples of video components of multimedia. So this will be very easy. It's so much familiar on yours because you have made this for the past past quarters and from our lessons. Another one, other multimedia components that we have known about are blogs, vlogs. So remember someone asked me, ma'am, what's the difference of blogs and vlogs? I already reiterated that many times that blogs are texts on a website, while vlogs are blogs in a form of video. But make sure that you are listening to informative vlogs when it comes to literature. Um, I do not think that we need, uh, we need to consider the vlogs that are made by content creators that are just for, we're not talking about pranks here or anything, okay? We are focusing with, um, literature reasons and for language learning, that could also be applicable. More importantly, we focus more with the with the literature. So I hope, um, you know how to differentiate between the two, and also for the vlogs, make sure that what you're going to choose as your basis is very much informative. Okay.

Next, um, other multimedia components are what we call webinars. So webinars are, um, the digital, digital or online seminars, the distance type of seminar that we do. So to learn about a skill or to learn about new knowledge or theories, um, um, to have a meeting that is, um, that we can learn more about something. So that's under webinars, and there are other interactive contents, not just webinars, blogs, and blogs. When I say interactive content, you as the audience or the reader will be the ones who will also participate in the discussion. So it's not just a passive, a passive component that you just watch, you just listen. But at this point, you can comment, you can raise your your hands, you can give your opinion, you can express your learning, you can express your ideas. So that is what we call interactive content. Okay. So others might say, ma'am, interactive content for gaming? Oh, well, that's actually possible. If you can make a game that will help you understand more about literature and connect that with our other literary genres, then that could be possible. Okay.

So first and foremost, the main type of, uh, our, um, multimedia format is the video. Its primary component is is the video itself for multimedia, especially those that appear online and on television. The only thing that you have to remember with video and its story is that videos are moving pictures. Yes, they are moving pictures. It's just like pictures, put you were you put pictures into a slide, and then you click it faster, then you can make moving pictures. That's why videos are made. And, um, the popular formats of videos are WMV, AVI, Mead, and Flash. Actually, Flash is used for animation. For animation, that's Flash. The WMV, the AVI, the Mead, actually, they are, they are the traditional ones. We are still using it until now, but usually now we use Mead and MP4 for videos. Okay. So many of the, the video formats are plugged in on browsers and in mobile applications to for faster loading. So I think if you have, you are more knowledgeable about the other formats of a video, then then that's it.

Next is animation. So it's a form of art that most people, especially those that are in the business of producing animated movies, that's animation. So anything that is that is that looks like a caricature, that looks like an image being drawn, and there and then it moved, then that's animation. So well, it's very most used in, too, just like, um, *Despicable Me*, *Doraemon*, so on and so forth, the comics that we have seen before, and now they they're being movies. So those are animation. So traditionally, Flash is used, is a common platform for animation. In using this component, the interactivity of animation is enhanced. But there are so many other, um, formats or tools that or a platform that you can use for animation. So do not think that it is only Flash because there are so many, um, platforms right now that you can use for animation. So I hope you also consider that. Okay.

Okay. So I hope I was able to explain the meaning of the text as a, as a multimedia form. So it's a combination with other media components that can make any application more user-friendly. So I would like to reiterate the importance of text, most especially if the other forms of multimedia is not working on your part. For example, just like what you had in your video anecdotes and for, for your digital picture story, you have included their audios that are unnecessary, those unnecessary backgrounds that you cannot handle. So what if your audience really needs to understand what's inside? Then the text would help you to, to explain what you really wanted to convey to your audience and to your readers. So that's how important text is. Another one, if you have chosen a text to adopt that is very complicated and the words are jargon to other people or not familiar to the general public, then what you have to do is to make text as an assistant. So, for example, there are words that are very hard to understand, then you can put the word and put the meaning beside that so that your readers who found it very, um, hard to understand, then they will find a way to comprehend what you are trying to say and what you are trying to to give to them. So that's it. So users of an application need to input text for the system to identify them. If you are trying to make a graphical format or a graphical presentation or a game in a form or in adapting a literary piece, so you need text for your system UI. You needed that, yes, for example, let the be the game starts, right? Or there's an option, would you say yes? Would you say no? So you need text also as, as the basic multimedia format. Next, text is also used to create a digital signature. So without text, such as in passwords, then your security will also have its failure.

Okay, let's now continue with the images. So digital image files are needed to create videos and animation. Yes, just like what I've told you earlier, there will be no animation if images were not were not discovered because images, because animations, videos, and motion pictures itself, they were made by digital image files. A user would sooner go to a website filled with colorful photographs than one that contains only text elements because most of the students like us, or most people generally, well, well, you try to look at researches, but I have read something about that that most of us are are visual learners. So visual learners like us in general needed pictures to, to easily grasp or understand what you are, what you are trying to to convey to us as your audience and as your viewer. Next, the format. The most common format for images are JPEG and PNG because it permits editing. Again, it permits editing, the JPEG and the PNG. So you can see that when there's written like JPG, so that's JPEG. PNG. Okay. So images are created by graphic designers using various software. We call that GIF. We also have GIF, or the moving image. It's only one image, but it's moving. That's why it's called GIF. Okay.

Let's continue with our audio. So audio are voiceovers. So I, you are always doing that for your, for digital picture story, video anecdotes, and for your, um, recorded, um, roleplay. So I have seen that and I have, uh, appreciated your creativity when it comes to that. Okay. And when it comes to audio files, those that you download for background music or for special effects that you can use for future editing. So we call that audio files. Again, it's different. Okay. When I say voiceovers, it's the embedded voice background, the embedded voice background or your recorded voice that you can put into a video. But when you say audio files, these are music and special effects that you downloaded to embed. These are not voices of people. Okay? So when you say any audio in an application is designed to improve a user experience, whatever it is, if its goal is to improve your presentation, to improve the meaning that you wanted to convey, to make people understand, to add additional creativity and authenticity to your work, then it serves, it serves its purpose.

Let's now continue with the characteristic of a multimedia. So for the characteristic, there are only five that you have to remember. Multimedia can be used in presentations and making them more interesting and fun. That's very basic, making it interesting. Number two, it has various viewing options such as projector or a media player and the like. So you don't need to print out. So it's, you need more money if you wanted to print out. Another one, um, you're adding to trash, right? So for you to be more economical, then you have these viewing options. Next, you can also download the multimedia presentation or play it live. So you have choices to present that. Number four, the technology of multimedia can also be used to make the information be conveyed more easily to the user. So it's the, um, it's the comfort, right? And next, it has improved the learning by combining various forms of media together. So to sum it up, the characteristics of multimedia wants us viewers and wants users to, to have the comfort of presenting our creativity and understanding of literature. So that is how multimedia have given us the freedom to express ourselves, to express the literature, and to preserve it because we have various ways of saving it. We have various ways of presenting it to the general public. Okay.

Lastly, for the part of multimedia, we have the benefits of using this. So first, it's digital storytelling. It allows students like you to improve the the knowledge about a specific subject. And it increases skills such as writing, researching, and reading. So let's be frank. If you're the type of person who you do not really like to listen to boring lectures like this, then you can have digital storytelling, right? So by just listening to, to voiceovers, to stories online, that would help you understand the text. I've noticed that with you when we do our reading material, you were, um, you're hesitant because if I have given you texts that are longer than two pages, you look like this. And you do AI or those, no problem with AI, but I wanted you to understand the text. Okay. But multimedia offers you a different venue, and that is for you to listen to text through a digital storytelling. So that's another benefit. So you'll just listen. You can be interactive at the same time. You can do the things that you wanted to while you are listening. Okay.

Let's now continue with the using multimedia. So using this can improve your, your overall academic performance. Well, because you're more comfortable of using this, and you're good at manipulating this and utilizing this, then your learning will be shown, and thus it will present a good academic performance. Next, in a particular, in particular, multimedia in the classroom is used for self-directed learning. That's why it's self-directed learning because it's up to you how to use this for your own growth and learning. Okay. Next, students manage their time and assess the needs to be included in their learning activities. What we're doing right now, I'm recording, you're listening to the lessons, or if you're listening to the text, if you're viewing the video to understand the text that you have to convey, that you have to make an adaptation of, then you have managed your time and assessed that. But the challenge is, are you really doing that properly? Managing your time, or you're using your time not to do use this multimedia and do other things? So that will be a different, a different, um, case to talk about. Okay, let's now continue.

Although there are benefits, remember class, that without understanding really the text itself that is given to you, although it's multimedia format or the traditional ones, then it will not serve its purpose unless you are doing your part as the receiver of the information. So I hope you do that. Okay.

So now we are on the last part of our discussion. It's the information and communications technology. So ICT, we know that we learned that as ICT, it refers to all the technology. So you just have to remember, it's the broadcast media. It's the intelligent building management systems. It's the audiovisual processing. It's the transmission systems that provides information that gives us network-based controls and monitoring functions. That is ICT. And it is often, um, alongside described with IT, or information technology. So, um, ICT and IT, although they are similar, they serve different purposes. If ICT is for communications, it is also for information technology. But this is more delves with how to use a computer to store, receive, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data or information. So if ICT is for communication purposes and it has a wide range of purpose, it is very clear with when it comes to storing, retrieving, transmitting, manipulating information. So IT system is generally an information system. It's also a communication system, or more specifically, a computer system. So we need ICT skills as well as our IT skills to understand and apply a range of computer programs, software, and other applications. Well, let's try to make it easy. We need your ICT skills to edit. Okay. To make creative literary adaptations. If you are not familiar, if you are not a digital native, or at least we do not require a digital native here, but we are requiring that at least you know how to copy and paste, you know how to cut and edit, you know how to delete, you know how to embed, you know how to to add. So those ICT skills that you need. Another one, you should know how to use Word, Microsoft Word. You should also know how to use Excel. At least you also know how to make PowerPoint presentations because most of them are, um, embedded and integrated with one another. So as 21st century learners, it's expected of you, yes, that you know how to manipulate computers, not just social media. Okay. I hope that you know how to use, um, the fundamentals of your ICT skills. Social media is another thing. So do not, please do not just delve into how to edit on TikTok, how to, um, how to post on Instagram, how to post on other social networking sites. You need to hone your ICT skills, okay? Do not just delve on the basics, but please delve and focus more with your skills. Okay?

So ICT skills that we've known about is typing and encoding your document. So bringing out your best writing using MS Word or MS Processor, that that's good. For next is manipulate numbers using Excel and generate slides for presentation. These are the very basic skills, basic skills of ICT skills. You know how to type in your Word document. You know how to justify. You know how to center. You know how to left to right align. You know how to control arr. Okay. And you know how to check the grammar. Yeah, the grammar check. Well, most importantly, if it's research, um, it's not reliable to just, um, believe in the grammar check because I've noticed that in Microsoft Word, not your purpose is what, how do I say this? That's why you need a grammar or another device to check the grammar. Well, it's another thing. So, let's continue. Okay. Generating slides for presentation. I, I hope, um, at this age you know how to manipulate slides. I am really hoping. Okay. Okay. Let's continue with. Okay.

Components of ICT: cloud computing, digital transaction, hardware, and software. So I know cloud computing is the digital storage, online storage. That's why it's called cloud because it's everywhere. Wherever you go, if you want to access that, if you save that into your cloud storage, then you can get that at the comfort of wherever you are. For digital transaction, and you know that the online applications, for example, my money, okay, it's one of the best examples. Digital transaction, you pay, you save money, online banking, that's it. It's digital transaction. Next, hardware and software. Hardware are the ones that we can hold. You can hold it. It's handheld, okay? That's hardware. If it's software, it's the application inside. Those that we we can only see but we cannot touch, the programs and the applications, that's software. But anything that we can, um, that we can hold, the keyboards, the system unit, the device, anything that we can hold, that's hardware that we can fix by our hands. Okay.

Let's now go to your final performance task. Listen very carefully. I want you to search "The Rich People Problems" by Kevin Kwan. You can use the internet to view that. Okay? Or you can also use your module if you want to read that because that is what you're going to make. You can make a digital picture story, but I will not limit you to that. You can use a video anecdote. Um, you can also do a role play and any other things that you can do as long as you have provided me your multimedia and ICT skills, then that's the best that we can do. Where are you going to submit that? Still in our cloud storage, our Google Drive. Yes, I heard you right. This will be your final performance task. After this, we will just read the other texts and understand them for the sake of your, um, examinations. But for this particular one, I think this will be the best presentation for your final performance task. And this would, that means this is your final chance to showcase that you have the right to pass in my subject.
