Good evening and welcome to 22 News at 5:30. I'm Laura Hutchinson.
The economy may be moving in the right direction, but Americans are more stressed than ever. 22 News reporter Julie McDonald breaks down a new report that shows what exactly stresses us out at the workplace.
"You get out of your job what you put into it. If you're, you know, if you allow yourself to be stressed, then you're going to be stressed. Me just coast. If you're someone who leaves work and all thoughts of it in the cubicle, well, you're one of the lucky ones."
A new survey from Evers College shows 83% of Americans are stressed out by at least one thing at work, and that's up 10% since last year. Low pay and unreasonable workload were tied for first place as the biggest causes of stress. Other factors to make the list included annoying co-workers, not having a job in a desired field, or the fear of being laid off.
"I'm a mechanic, so I mean, if it's slow, we don't get paid because we're flat rate. So, that's a big bummer for us."
Even though plenty of signs point to a slowly improving economy, many employees are still doing more work with fewer resources for the same pay as a result of the recession. That stress doesn't just impact health and personal life, but it can also take a toll on the way you perform the job that causes the stress in the first place.
As for those 17% of people who aren't stressed on the job, don't be too envious of them. It doesn't necessarily mean they're living worry-free.
"I got two teenage kids, so there's almost more stress in that, so I look at work as a time to relax a little bit."
