Two chilling accounts blur the line between reality and the unknown, pulling you into a world of shadowy men in black and unsettling alien encounters. A quiet doctor's late-night visitor delivers a threatening warning after his hypnosis sessions with a young man targeted by a baffling alien abduction. Together, these cases reveal a disturbing pattern of missing time, alien encounters, and men in black intimidation, hinting at something far more sinister beneath the surface.
This little-known 1975 alien abduction, which occurred less than 2 weeks before the famous Travis Walton incident, revealed, through initial conscious recall, many elements of UFO abduction experiences which came after it. David Stephens, aged 21, and his friend Glenn Gray, aged 18, shared a trailer in Norway, Maine, where they both worked late shifts in local factories. At 3:00 a.m. on October 27th, 1975, the two men were listening to music in their van when they heard a sound like an explosion. On rushing outside, they found nothing, so decided to go for a drive in Gray's 1971 Plymouth Satellite in search of the source of the sound.
They drove towards nearby Lake Thompson, heading 4 miles south down Route 26, and then cutting west towards Oxford, which they planned would take them to the western side of the lake. Just about a mile down the road, the car abruptly turned, as if by its own volition, onto a different road, although still heading towards Oxford. Gray tried to regain control of the vehicle in the quiet, rugged terrain through which they seemed to be making unusually swift progress. Strangely, the road seemed unusually smooth, as if they were floating rather than driving.
As they continued down the road on the east side of the lake, they passed a herd of cows lying on the ground, and which they noticed were shaking their heads from side to side in a very odd way. There was no traffic or any other movement around them until they passed a cornfield. They observed two lights inside the field that they assumed were on a truck, so were astonished when the lights rose soundlessly above the field. Gray managed to turn off the car engine, then both wound down their windows, expecting to hear helicopter sounds. However, the rising object was still silent, and as they watched, enlarged into some other kind of craft, giving off blue, green, and yellow lights. When it reached treetop level, all of its lights went out.
The strange object was hovering 30 ft from the car when the men became fearful and restarted the car, closing their windows and heading off. However, the object gave rapid pursuit until a mile down the road, the men's car came to an abrupt halt. The craft then shone what Stevens and Gray later described as the brightest light we had ever seen, a dazzling light beam on the car. They both realized at the same time that the car was now on the other side of the road, and their window slightly rolled down. And when they stared at each other, both saw the color orange.
After several more panicked turns, their car ended up at a part of the lake called Tripp Pond, where they now viewed the most astounding sight. To their east hovered a cylindrical-shaped UFO, which was emitting a very bright light. The object continued to hang there for nearly 1 and 1/2 hours, during which time Stevens and Gray were desperately trying to restart the immobilized car. About 45 minutes into this long, frightening wait, two disc-shaped objects appeared in the night sky, which glowed red, green, and blue. They proceeded to perform amazing aerial maneuvers over Tripp Pond, first descending with a falling leaf motion, as if about to go underwater, then rising with movements like someone climbing stairs.
Just before 6:30 a.m., a dark gray fog set in around the car, and the radio restarted with a cheerful weather report. With the cylindrical object still in view, the men managed to flee the scene and were home by 7:00 a.m. However, once inside their trailer, they started to experience unpleasant physical symptoms, such as lightheadedness, burning eyes, sore throats, and bouts of the chills. They were unable to speak or balance properly, their teeth became sore and loose, and they were having trouble breathing. Both had a yellowish discoloration below their eyes, which burned. Gray complained of a brown substance on his tongue, which made his mouth dry, and Stevens experienced intense thirst. The discoloration around their eyes was to persist for 3 days.
Once inside their door, both men received a telepathic message. "We are not done with you. We are coming back for you." They both sank into a deep sleep. The strangeness was not yet over for Stevens and Gray when the pair visited Stevens' parents that night. Gray was to observe a black cube-like object tumbling through the house and then disappearing through a wall. Golden wires were seen on the television screen for some time, and then Stevens saw an ashtray lift up off a table and fall back down.
The following day, the two men were woken by feet running across the roof of their trailer, and later, at around 4:00 p.m., the pair decided to revisit Tripp Pond to seek any physical evidence of their experience. They later reported seeing black cubes and spheres flying over the pond, as well as white, silvery spheres flying in all directions. They both testified having gone into a deep sleep upon seeing these objects. These sightings were then followed by a visit from a stranger, a stocky man with a buzz cut and wearing a dark blue suit, who gave Stevens the cryptic warning that "You'd better keep your mouth shut if you know what's good for you."
The men's case was reported in the Lewiston Sun Journal on Tuesday, October 28th, 1975, and then came to the attention of Shirley Pickett of the International UFO Bureau. She was curious about the lost time element after the UFO beam of light had hit the car and slid it sideways, rendering the two unconscious. Her investigation focused on the missing time phenomenon related to the men's memories of the location of their car, initially on the right, and then suddenly on the left-hand side of the road. Her method of inquiry was hypnosis, conducted by the physician Herbert Hopkins, with eight sessions conducted between December 1975 and March 1976. David was the initial subject of the hypnosis, with Glenn soon leaving town in a move to Oklahoma.
Extraordinary details came out that involved Stevens apparently being on board a craft and examined by strange, nonhuman creatures. Under hypnosis, Stevens recalled standing outside of their car while Gray remained inside. A humanoid being met Stevens and then escorted him to the craft, which was large and cylindrical, and arrayed with many lights of various colors. Stevens reported that the creature did not identify itself, but already knew his name. On entering the UFO, Stevens observed two rooms. One domed with curving walls and a shiny floor, and the other a hospital-like room, about 35 ft in diameter and 15 ft high, with gray walls, a shiny floor, and bright overhead lights. This room had what appeared to be an operating table and equipment. It felt cool and had a burnt smell.
The beings present were about 4 ft or 1.4 m tall and with bald, mushroom-shaped heads, large, slanted, unblinking eyes, small, round noses, and no ears or mouths. Their skin was white and appeared tougher than human skin. Their hands, each with four webbed fingers. They wore black, gown-like garments and shoes that seemed made of paper. Stevens related that four of the beings drew two tubes of blood from the crook of his right arm and took trimmings of his hair and nails. He refused to undress and said he struck one of the beings in the face, who seemed neither hurt nor angry. At this stage, he then gave in without any further resistance, and now feeling unafraid, allowed the beings to undress him. As he lay on the table, a machine with an extension arm holding a device that glided over his body scanned him for 40 to 45 minutes. The humanoids then gave him an injection in the shoulder, a procedure that was to become commonly reported in cases of abductions.
Stevens then got dressed and communicated with the beings, of whom the first he had encountered reassured him that he would not be harmed. They communicated telepathically by what he called brain waves, and said that they had observed him over some time and would meet with him again. However, they refused to answer his questions about themselves. They led Stevens back to the first room, and his next memory was of being back in the car with Gray. According to Figuered, Gray seemed to have no memory of Stevens being absent.
As the men were driving away from the cornfield, the UFO continued to pace them. They then had to stop the car in a field with its engine and radio now dead. Stevens said that the main UFO and two other discs remained in sight, moving around until a fog hid them. At around 6:30 a.m., the large UFO appeared to suck up the fog and then fly away, after which the car then became operational again. Under hypnosis, Stevens refused to discuss when or whether the beings said they would return. His telling account contained many elements of alien abductions to be reported over the next few decades. The telepathic communication, medical examination, and missing time, and so was a forerunner of things to come. The strange men in black visitation, which also occurred to Hopkins and resulted in his destruction of all his records of the case, also became a frequent occurrence, according to subsequent reports of UFO abductions.

Herbert Hopkins' account of his chilling visit from a man in black is still probably the most detailed there is of a man in black visit. Disturbingly, there was even later a strange targeting of his family members with another bizarre encounter. In September 1976, 58-year-old Herbert Hopkins was a doctor and hypnotist living in Maine, USA. At that time, he was working as a consultant on the case of the reported UFO abduction and teleportation of David Stevens. Hopkins claimed to have had little interest in UFOs and no knowledge of men in black prior to that, but was genuinely rattled by what he claimed as an authentic encounter.
On the night of Saturday, September 11th at 8:00 p.m., Hopkins got a phone call from a man who introduced himself as the vice president of the New Jersey UFO Research Organization. Hopkins later discovered that this organization was purely fictitious and nonexistent. The man stated that they wanted to interview Dr. Hopkins about the Stevens case. As his family had just left for the cinema, Hopkins agreed to providing the interview that night. No sooner had he put down the phone and entered his hall to switch on the back door light, when astonishingly, he saw a man already climbing up the porch steps. He later commented that he saw no car arrive, and even if the man did have a car, he could not have possibly got to his house that quickly from any phone, there being no mobiles in those days. Bizarrely, virtually the moment he had put down his phone, the figure of the visitor had appeared on his front porch.
The man was dressed immaculately in a black suit and tie, dark shirt, black shoes, and socks, gray suede gloves, and was wearing a derby style hat. Hopkins' immediate impression was that he looked like an undertaker. On entering the house, the man removed his hat to reveal a completely bald head, and also a lack of eyebrows and eyelashes. His skin was stark white, plastic-looking, and his lips bright scarlet red, now resembling in Hopkins' mind a shop mannequin. Looking back, Hopkins said that it was out of character that he allowed the man in without asking him his name and how he had got there. He seemed to have suspended his usual precautionary self.
After walking in and seating himself, the man proceeded to question Hopkins about the Stevens teleportation case, referring to interview tapes and research that he seemingly knew Hopkins possessed without having been told about them. Or as expressing agreement that Hopkins' information was what he understood to be the case, made Hopkins wonder why he was there. In a later recorded interview with abductee and researcher Betty Hill, Hopkins said that the man spoke flawless textbook English in a flat monotone. During the exchange, he observed the crease in the man's trousers not to flatten out when he sat down. He also saw him casually wipe his mouth, resulting in the back of the glove being bright red, while the color on his mouth was smeared. The gesture momentarily revealed to Hopkins that his visitor had no lips, just a straight slit for a mouth. He also observed that the being's chin receded into his neck, and that he did not move his head at all.
Particularly odd was when this visitor told Hopkins that he had two coins in his pocket, which he knew to be true as he had just paid the paperboy and pocketed a dime and a penny. The man then asked the doctor to hold one of the coins flat in his hand and watch it. As Hopkins watched, the bright copper penny started to develop a silvery color, then became bluish, and then blurry, and finally vanished. "Neither you nor anyone else on this plane will ever see that coin again," the visitor told him. He asked if Hopkins had heard of Betty and Barney Hill, which he had, and if he knew how Barney Hill had died. Hopkins suggested of a heart attack, but then started sinister veiled threats. The being said that Barney had died because he knew too much and not of a heart attack, but because he no longer had a heart, just as Hopkins no longer had the coin. "You no longer have the coin, just like Barney no longer has a heart."
Hopkins was starting to feel frightened and uneasy after the disappearance of the coin. The humanoid then stated to him that he had tape recordings of the Stevens hypnosis sessions. Still poker-faced, he then quite unemotionally ordered Hopkins to destroy all tapes, correspondence, written and other records concerning anything to do with UFOs. He said that he would know if he did not do so, in which case Hopkins would suffer the same fate as Barney Hill. Hopkins suddenly noticed that the visitor's speech was slowing down. He said, "My energy is running low. Must go now. Goodbye." Then rose unsteadily to his feet, walking falteringly one step at a time, he left the house and, clinging tightly to the railing, descended down the front steps uncertainly. He slowly walked to the end of the house, which he held onto, seemingly for balance, then disappeared around the corner.
Hopkins saw a bright bluish-white light shining in the driveway and bathing the area. Assuming it must be the stranger's vehicle, he ran to the kitchen window to watch the man getting into a car. However, there was nothing to be seen. He then rushed outside to the driveway, which was the only way to exit the property due to a thick hedge at the front. However, again, there was nothing to be seen. Although he did later wonder why he didn't look up.
Hopkins did as he had said, destroying all tapes and records he had of the Stevens teleportation case, reasoning that whatever happened to the coin, he might easily meet the same fate. He reported that he was very badly shaken by the visit and determined to have nothing further to do with the investigation. After destroying all documents, he then immediately phoned his journalist contact and disendorsed any information he had given to the National Enquirer. His family got home to find all the lights on, both inside and outside the house, and Hopkins sitting terrified at the kitchen table next to a gun, which a local police chief had told him to buy, but which he'd never used. Their large collie Alsatian cross, usually a feisty watchdog, was hiding in a closet terrified and very reluctant to come out, although interestingly, the cat was unaffected by the stranger's visit. Hopkins' family raced outside to search for any signs of the visitation and found indentations like a metallic caterpillar tread in the driveway over a short distance, which however had vanished by the following day.
Over coming weeks, he was to have extreme problems with his telephone, often going dead, cutting off calls, rendering him uncontactable by his patients, or having strange background sounds and other difficulties. Hopkins said that over time he became convinced that the visitor had come from an alternate dimension and had returned to wherever his coin had ended up. There seemed a family connection when eerily, nearly 2 weeks later, Hopkins' daughter-in-law, Maureen, and her husband, John, also experienced a bizarre and unsettling visit. Maureen received a phone call from a man asking if he could visit with his girlfriend, and John recalled having met an odd man 2 days previously in a fast food restaurant. Maureen told the caller that the couple were welcome to come over.
When they arrived, Maureen observed that while both appeared to be in their mid-30s, they were wearing strangely old-fashioned clothes. Both walked as if they did not seem at ease in their earthly bodies, taking short, slow steps as if they were scared of falling. They also seemed to have no awareness of basic human etiquette, enthusiastically accepting two bottles of cola, which they then did not touch. Sitting awkwardly on the sofa, their movements seemed robotic, then took a dark turn when the man began to intimately fondle the woman, asking John as he did so, "Is this the way it is done?" The man quizzed John and Maureen about their life as they sat there flabbergasted at his behavior. He asked if they watched much television, if they read books, what they read, and what they talked about. The crunch came when he asked Maureen, "Do you have any nude pictures of yourself? How were you made?" And she ordered them to leave immediately. They stood up, but now the man seemed unable to walk, and the frightened woman asked John, "Please move him. I can't move him myself." The man suddenly became animated and walked directly to the door in a straight line, followed by his girlfriend. Both left without saying goodbye.
Paranormal researcher Tom Slemen has concluded that many black and other beings he calls imposters, who show up in the lives of UFO witnesses, are always one step ahead of the authorities, characteristically changing their appearance and modes of transport over time. He states that they continue to be reported all over the world.
