A pen pal is someone with whom you exchange letters. I write to a friend, and my friend writes to me. That kind of letter exchange is called being a pen pal. But nowadays, fewer people write letters, and you hear the word "pen pal" very rarely. After all, there are many apps like email and LINE that allow you to communicate, and they are convenient, aren't they? But when I was a student, a friend went on a trip abroad and sent me a letter from overseas, and I was so happy. Nowadays, if you want to call someone, you can call them immediately, right? Even internationally, with LINE, you can make calls as long as you have internet. It's fast and convenient to communicate, but letters take a very long time to send from overseas to Japan. But even the waiting time was enjoyable, and when I received it, it was a postcard from that country with a message written on it, and I remember being very happy.
