There is a season that God takes certain people through that has no name in most churches.
It does not look like blessing. It does not feel like favor. It looks like loss. It feels like silence. It looks like the door closing before it fully opened. It feels like the relationships falling away without explanation. The prayers going unanswered for longer than you thought you could bear. The fire coming from every direction at once. And no one around you seeming to understand why your life has become so hard when all you have done is try to follow God.
And in the middle of that season, the question that destroys most people is this: Did I do something wrong? Is God punishing me? Did he forget about me?
He did not forget about you. What is happening to you right now is not punishment. It is not abandonment. It is not evidence that your faith is weak or your calling is wrong or that God has moved on and left you behind. It is the fire, and the fire is not destroying you. The fire is forming you.
Stay with me all the way through this video because what I am about to show you in the next 20 minutes is going to change the way you understand everything you have been going through. Sign number five is the one that most people in the fire never recognize. And it is the sign that explains why the hardest seasons of your life were also the most important ones. The first sign that God is training you in the fire is this: Everything that was comfortable has been stripped away. Not one thing, not a difficult season in one area of your life. Everything. The job that felt stable, suddenly ended. The relationship that seemed permanent, collapsed. The community that felt like home became a place you could no longer stay in. The financial peace you worked for, disappeared. The physical health you took for granted, failed. And you looked around at your life and you could not find one area where things were the way they used to be.
This is not bad luck. This is not a spiritual attack that slipped past God's attention. This is deliberate. God strips the comfortable before he builds the eternal. He removes what is temporary before he establishes what is permanent. And he does this because most human beings, if given the choice, will cling to the comfortable version of their life rather than step into the assigned one. The comfortable version of your life was never going to get you where God is taking you. So, he removed it.
Isaiah 43:2 says this: "When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze." Notice what that verse does not say. It does not say you will walk around the fire. It does not say God will prevent the fire from coming. It says when you walk through it, the fire is in the path, and God is in the fire with you. If everything comfortable has been stripped from your life and you cannot find a single area that feels secure, that is not the absence of God's hand. That is the presence of it.
But stay with me because sign two is the one that makes the fire feel the most personal.
The second sign that God is training you in the fire is this: The people you expected to be there have disappeared. Not strangers, not acquaintances. The people you believed would be with you through anything. The ones you thought you could count on no matter what. Friends who pulled back without an explanation. Family members who distanced themselves at exactly the moment you needed them the most. A church community that felt like it was built for you until the season changed and suddenly it was not. People you poured into for years who were nowhere to be found when the fire came.
And the isolation that followed was more painful than the original loss because it was not just about losing people. It was about losing the version of yourself that felt known and loved and connected. You went from being surrounded to being alone. And in the silence, the enemy whispered that this was permanent, that the isolation was your punishment, that the people left because something was wrong with you.
Nothing was wrong with you. The fire does not work in crowds. It works in solitude. Every person God has ever used significantly went through a season of profound isolation before their assignment began. David was alone in the fields for years before he stood before Goliath. Joseph was in a pit, then a prison, before he stood before Pharaoh. Moses was in the wilderness for 40 years before the burning bush. Elijah was alone at the brook, alone in the cave, alone on the mountain. Jesus was led by the spirit into the wilderness immediately after his baptism, before a single miracle had been performed, before a single disciple had been called.
Isolation is not the enemy's work. Isolation is the fire doing what the fire does: separating what is essential from what is temporary. Removing what was never meant to come with you into what comes next. The people who left were not your assignment. The ones who remain, even if they are very few, are the ones God is keeping for what comes next.

The third sign that God is training you in the fire is this: Your prayer life has been forced deeper than it has ever gone. Before the fire, prayer was a practice. It was something you did, something you valued, something that was a part of your spiritual life. But in the fire, prayer became something different. It became survival. It became the only place where you could go and find anything that felt like solid ground. It became the conversation that was not optional because you had run out of every other option.
Desperation in prayer is not weakness. Desperation in prayer is the beginning of the kind of depth that God was looking for all along. The prayer life that carries real authority is not built in comfortable seasons. It is built in the fire. The person who has prayed through loss, through silence, through the apparent absence of God, through the year that nothing changed. That person prays differently than someone who has only ever prayed from a place of security. There is a weight to their words. There is a settledness in their faith that cannot be faked and cannot be manufactured. It was built in the fire.
Job 23:10 says this: "But he knows the way that I take. When he has tested me, I will come forth as gold." Job said that in the middle of the worst season of his life, not after, in the middle, when he could not feel God, when God seemed absent, when everything had been taken, he still said, "When he has tested me, I will come forth as gold." The fire is testing you, and gold does not come out of the furnace the same way it went in.
If your prayer life has become more desperate, more honest, more raw than it has ever been, that is not a sign that your faith is failing. That is a sign that it is being forged.
But sign four, stay with me, because sign four is the one that is the hardest to admit. And admitting it is part of the formation.
The fourth sign that God is training you in the fire is this: Your character has been exposed in ways that humbled you. The fire does not just reveal what is strong. The fire reveals what is still impure. And for many people who are being trained in the fire, some of the most humbling moments of their lives have happened in the middle of the season. Moments where they reacted in fear instead of faith. Where they said something that revealed how much pride was still there. Where they discovered an area of their heart that they did not know needed work.
The fire is not just about what God is building. It is also about what he is burning away. Malachi 3:3 describes God as a refiner who sits beside the fire and purifies. The refiner does not walk away from the furnace and come back hours later to check on the metal. The refiner sits beside it, watching, adjusting the temperature, knowing exactly how long the metal needs to stay in the heat to purify without destroying. God is sitting beside the fire in your life. He has not walked away. He has not left the room. He is right there watching, adjusting, knowing the exact temperature and the exact duration required to produce what he is producing in you.
And the things the fire is burning away – the pride, the fear, the need for approval, the attachment to comfort, the places where self was still on the throne – those things needed to go. Not because you were bad, but because where God is taking you, those things would have destroyed you. The fire is not punishment. The fire is mercy. It is burning away everything that would have killed you later.

The fifth sign that God is training you in the fire is this. And this is the one most people in the fire never recognize. You have developed a sensitivity to what is real that you did not have before the fire started. Before the fire, you could tolerate a lot of things that felt slightly off. Surface-level relationships. Environments where performance was more important than truth. Conversations that stayed comfortable and never went deep. You could move in and out of those spaces without much resistance because you had not yet been trained to recognize the difference.
The fire changed that. Now you cannot sit in rooms where things are false without feeling it. Now you cannot maintain relationships that are only about what is comfortable and never about what is real. Now you have a sensitivity to spiritual environments, a discernment about what is genuinely of God and what is religious performance that you did not have before. And this sensitivity has made you difficult for some people to be around. They liked the version of you that went along. They are less comfortable with the version of you that cannot pretend anymore.
That discomfort is not a problem. That discomfort is the gift the fire gave you. The fire burns away the ability to tolerate the artificial. It makes you a person who requires real in relationships, in environments, in spiritual community, in yourself. And that requirement is not arrogance. That requirement is discernment. And discernment is one of the primary gifts God gives to people he is training for significant assignment. You are not harder to be around because something is wrong with you. You are harder to be around because the fire made you real. And real people make artificial environments uncomfortable. That has always been true.
But if sign five describes something you have been experiencing, stay for sign six. Because sign six is the one that explains what God is about to do with everything the fire produced in you.
The sixth sign that God is training you in the fire is this: God has been giving you a vision for something larger than your current circumstances. In the middle of the fire, when everything feels stripped down and small and uncertain, God has been showing you something. Not in full detail, not with a clear timeline, but a glimpse, a sense, a knowing that what is coming is not the same as what was. A word that rose in your spirit about the future that was so much larger than what your current life looked like that you almost dismissed it because it seemed impossible given where you were standing.
Do not dismiss it. Habakkuk 2:3 says this: "For the vision awaits an appointed time. It speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it. It will certainly come and will not delay." God does not give vision to people who are not being prepared to carry it. The magnitude of what he showed you is directly proportional to the magnitude of what he is building in you. You did not receive a large vision by accident. You received a large vision because God is forming a large capacity in you. And the fire is the formation process.
The vision that God gave you in the middle of the fire is not a cruel joke. It is not a dream that was never meant to come to pass. It is a preview of the assignment given to you in the season of preparation so that you would have something to hold on to while the fire did its work. If God showed you something while you were in the fire, hold it, protect it, write it down, come back to it. It is real.

The seventh sign that God is training you in the fire, and this is the one that changes everything, is this: You have stopped trying to get out of the fire and started asking what God is trying to do in it. This is the sign of a spirit that has been fully submitted to the formation process. And it does not happen immediately. It happens after the stripping, after the isolation, after the desperate prayer, after the humbling exposure of character, after the sensitivity is developed, after the vision is received. After all of that, something in you finally surrenders the fight against the fire and asks the better question. Not "When does this end?" Not "Why is this happening to me?" Not "What did I do wrong?" But, "God, what are you building?"
That question is a turning point because it reorients everything. It stops treating the fire as an enemy and starts treating it as a forge. It stops measuring the season by how comfortable it is and starts measuring it by what it is producing. It stops asking God to get you out and starts asking God to get the most out of what you are in. And when that question becomes genuine, not a spiritual performance, but an actual surrender, the fire begins to feel different. Not less hot, not less real, not less painful, but purposeful. And purposeful suffering is entirely different from meaningless suffering. Purposeful suffering produces something. Meaningless suffering only destroys.
Your fire is purposeful. God is sitting beside it. He knows the temperature. He knows the duration. He knows exactly what he is producing. And what he is producing is a version of you that can carry what he needs you to carry. The weight of the assignment he placed on your life before you were born.
Here is what I need to leave you with before you go. The fire is not the end of your story. The fire is the middle of your story. And the people who come out of the fire are the ones who have something to say that people who never entered it cannot say. They carry a weight in their words, a settledness in their faith, a depth in their understanding of God that can only be produced by the experience of walking through the thing that was supposed to destroy them and finding God in the middle of it. That is who you are becoming. Not in spite of the fire. Because of it. You were not placed in this season because you are weak. You were placed in this season because God saw something in you that was worth the process of formation. And he does not waste fire. Every degree of heat in your life right now is producing something that could not have been produced any other way.
Do not leave the fire too early. Do not try to find a shortcut around what God is doing in the middle. Do not let the discomfort convince you that something has gone wrong. Something has gone exactly right. And when you come out on the other side, and you will come out, you will understand why every moment of this season was necessary. The fire is not your enemy. The fire is your formation. And what God is forming in you is going to be worth everything the fire cost.
