In 1978, the physicist John Archibald Wheeler posed a question that has never fully stopped haunting the scientific community. When the photon finally arrives after billions of years of travel, this is retrocausality. Welcome to the Reality Revolution. I'm your host Brian Scott, and today we're talking about retrocausality. The retrocausal self. In 1978, the physicist John Archibald Wheeler posed a question that has never fully stopped haunting the scientific community. It began as the [music] most dangerous ideas often do, with a thought experiment. Wheeler imagined a photon, a single particle of light emitted [music] by a distant quasar billions of years ago before the Earth existed. This photon, crossing intergalactic space, encounters a massive galaxy whose gravitational field bends light, creating two possible paths around it. Like a river splitting around an island, the photon could travel left or right, each path arriving eventually at a telescope on Earth.
Now, here's the question that changed everything. When the photon finally arrives after billions of years of travel, the astronomer [music] has a choice. She can set up two separate detectors, one for each path, revealing which route the [music] photon took, particle behavior, a definite history. Or she can set up an interferometer, merging [music] the two paths, allowing the photon to interfere with itself, the behavior of a wave, a thing that was simultaneously [music] in both places at once, occupying two paths across billions of light-years of [music] space.
The extraordinary finding, confirmed in laboratory experiments in 2007 and [music] repeatedly since, is this: the astronomer's choice of measurement made today in the present determines the photon's behavior in the past. [music] The photon that departed its source before any human civilization existed appears to have been shaped in its very nature >> [music] >> by a decision made billions of years after its journey began. In this example, the future definitely reached back and organized the past. Wheeler called this the delayed choice experiment. He was careful about his language, as careful as a physicist can be when standing at the edge of something genuinely revolutionary.
[music] He said, "The experiment invites us to consider that the past has no existence except as recorded in the present." He spoke of the universe as participatory, [music] a cosmos that is built in some fundamental sense by the observations made within it. He described the photon's history as a great smoky dragon, sharp at the mouth where it strikes the detector, sharp at the tail [music] where it is emitted, but undefined, unresolved, genuinely open in the vast middle of its journey >> [music] >> until the measurement at the end determines what the beginning was.
Wheeler meant this [music] literally. He was describing a universe in which the conventional arrow of time, [music] the one-directional flow from fixed past to open future, is at the quantum level far more [music] permeable than classical physics assumed, in which the future participates in the construction [music] of the past, in which the line between cause and effect, between before [music] and after is drawn differently than common sense requires. This is retrocausality, and it may be the most important scientific concept >> [music] >> that almost no one in the general population has heard of.
It is the basis for my future self technique, and I am discussing this with you today because I want you to understand the future self technique that [music] I teach, particularly at my events, is grounded in real physics and science. When you understand it, it changes [music] everything. It's taking your basic understanding of quantum experiments like the double-slit experiment where light can become particle and wave, and expanding that, adding time to it. Let's define this again. Retrocausality is the hypothesis that effects can precede their causes, that the future can influence the past. For most of the history of science, this was considered completely impossible. Causes cause effects. Time flows forward. The past is fixed. Then quantum mechanics arrived, and self-evident stopped being reliable.
The experimental evidence accumulated over the past several decades has placed the serious scientific community in a position it finds uncomfortable and fascinating in equal measure. Multiple lines of inquiry, Wheeler's delayed choice results, the delayed choice quantum eraser experiments of Kim, Kulik, Shi, and Scully in 1999, the implications of quantum entanglement, the work on time-symmetric formulations of quantum mechanics have converged on the same unsettling territory. >> [music] >> The conventional assumption that the present can only be influenced by the past appears to be, at a minimum, incomplete.
[music] In 2017, physicists Matthew Leifer of Chapman University and Matthew Pusey of the Perimeter Institute published a paper in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A. Their conclusion, if one accepts certain reasonable assumptions about the nature of quantum reality, specifically, if one insists on maintaining both locality and realism simultaneously, >> [music] >> then quantum theory is retrocausal. The mathematics leaves little room for the alternative.
[music] Physicist Hugh Price at Cambridge, [music] who has written and lectured on retrocausality for three decades, frames the issue with characteristic clarity. He observes that the fundamental equations of physics are time-symmetric. They work equally well run forward or backward. The arrow of time, the one-directional quality of causation, is a feature of thermodynamics and our particular experience of the universe arising from the deep laws that govern it, rather than being a feature those laws require. Those deep laws make it no distinction between past and future. They are, as Price puts it, already retrocausal in their very structure.
>> [music] >> Yakir Aharonov, one of the most decorated physicists of the 20th century, developed what he called the two-state vector formalism, a framework for quantum mechanics in which every quantum system >> [music] >> is described by two wave functions simultaneously, one evolving from the past toward the future, and one evolving from the future toward the past. In this formulation, the present moment is determined >> [music] >> by both what came before and by what comes after. The future is already exerting influence on the present through the backward-evolving wave that Aharonov's mathematics describes.
The physicist John Cramer developed the transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics in which every quantum event is understood as a handshake between two waves, one traveling forward in time from emitter to absorber, and one traveling backward in time from absorber to emitter. The observable event, the thing that registers in the physical world, is the completion of this transaction, future and present collaborating to produce the present.
In 2023, Rod Sutherland at the University of Sydney published a detailed mathematical description of retrocausality, arguing that it can resolve the long-standing conflict between quantum mechanics and special relativity. The tension that has made physicists so uncomfortable with quantum entanglement and its apparent faster-than-light correlations. The resolution he proposes is elegant. The particles are communicating with each other across space through retrocausal influences, >> [music] >> through the future boundary conditions of the universe, rather than through any signal traveling faster than light. The universe is coherent across space and time simultaneously, coordinated by both its past and its future at once.
In 2024, a team led by David Arvidsson Shakur at the Hitachi Cambridge Laboratory proposed a retro-causal teleportation protocol, a method by which quantum information could be transmitted using retro-causal effects in ways that classical chronology respecting theories forbid. Their paper states with striking directness, "Our Gedanken experiment it demonstrates that entanglement can generate operational advantages forbidden in classical chronology respecting theories." The future is useful. Future has operational advantages. The future is already present in the mathematics.
There is a framework within physics that makes all of this less strange if no less profound. In 1908, the mathematician Hermann Minkowski presented the implications of Einstein's special relativity in a formulation so clarifying that Einstein himself initially found it almost too beautiful to resist. Minkowski showed that the theory of relativity, properly understood, describes a four-dimensional structure, three dimensions of space and one of time, in which all events past, present, and future exist with equal ontological status. He called it spacetime. Physicists now call the implication eternalism or the block universe.
In the block universe, the future is real. The year 2050 exists. The moment of your greatest flourishing exists. [music] The moment of your most generous expression, your most creative accomplishment, your fullest embodied abundance, that moment exists with exactly the same ontological status as this present moment, as the moment of your birth, as the moment the first star formed in the first galaxy of the first billion years of the cosmos. All of it is present, real, in a four-dimensional structure that special relativity requires us to accept as the accurate description of what the universe actually is.
The physicist Brian Greene describes the block universe and invites us to imagine a book. All the pages exist simultaneously even though a reader experiences them sequentially. The story exists whole. The ending exists with the same reality as the beginning. The characters at the conclusion of the narrative are as real as the characters at its opening. Your future self exists in the block universe. This is a statement of physics rather than aspiration. Your future self, the version of you that inhabits the life your deepest desire has been reaching toward, the self that has arrived into the fullest expression of your abundance, your creative freedom, your relational richness, that self is real >> [music] >> in the block universe with exactly the same physical reality as the self that is listening to these words. It exists in a region of the four-dimensional structure [music] that your experience has yet to reach, but it exists.
And if the retro-causal interpretation of quantum mechanics is correct, if the universe is indeed the time-symmetric future-influenced >> [music] >> backward wave-containing structure, so let me say that again because this is what the universe is, >> [music] >> a time-symmetric future-influenced backward wave-containing structure that Arvin and Cramer and Price and Leifer and a growing community of serious physicists are arguing it is, then that future self is already exerting influence on the present moment. The future self is already sending signals back.
Consider the evidence [music] that your own life contains every person who has practiced genuine future self work, who has spent time [music] inhabiting the felt reality of their most fully expressed future version. Everyone that I've worked with reports a specific and consistent pattern of experience in the days and weeks that follow. The right information arrives at the right moment. The specific book appears at the exact juncture when its content is most needed before the conscious mind has identified the need clearly enough to go searching for it. The right person appears at the precise moment when the life trajectory has aligned with theirs. Ideas arrive whole, complete, [music] fully formed with a quality of certainty that distinguishes them from ordinary creative speculation. I mean, that's what you're seeing when you watch the thought-provoking movie Interstellar. [music] A lot of people don't understand that movie, but that's what's happening in that movie. The main character through his experience in a black hole is interacting with higher-dimensional beings, sending communication back in time.
>> [music] >> This pattern where ideas arrive fully and completely at the precise moment you need them has been reported too consistently across too many people, >> [music] >> too many traditions to be dismissed as coincidence. Daryl Bem, >> [music] >> a Cornell University psychologist, published a paper in 2011 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, [music] one of the most prestigious peer-reviewed journals in the field, presenting nine experiments over a decade of research, all of them >> [music] >> demonstrating what Bem called feeling the future. Statistically significant responses to stimuli before those stimuli were presented. The paper passed peer review and [music] it produced a firestorm of controversy that continues to this day because it results in something if valid [music] requires a mechanism. They require a pathway by which the future influences the present. >> [music] >> They require, in other words, retro-causality.
Dean Radin at the Institute of Noetic Sciences has published decades of experiments [music] examining presentiment, the measurable physiological response of [music] human subjects to emotionally significant stimuli before those [music] stimuli are presented. Heart rate changes, skin conductance shifts, neurological activity patterns, all of them occurring seconds before the stimulus that in a strictly forward causal universe [music] could only produce effects after its presentation. The physiology of the human body appears to be sensitive to its own future.
The retro-causal interpretation [music] of quantum mechanics provides the physical framework within which this [music] sensitivity becomes coherent. If the two-state vector formalism is correct, if every physical system is shaped by both past and future, then a human nervous system, being a physical system, is shaped by its future boundary conditions. [music] The future self is a boundary condition. The life being reached toward is a boundary condition [music] and the boundary condition in physics shapes the behavior of the system they bound. You are being shaped by your own future. Question is whether you are engaging with that process consciously or allowing it to operate below awareness >> [music] >> without direction, without the deliberate and loving and specific inhabiting of the future self that makes the boundary condition more [music] coherent, more precise, defined, more powerfully present as an influence on the trajectory of the life moving toward it.
Now, what happens is there are infinite [music] future selves in the wave state, which [music] contains all possibilities. Those possibilities include different realities. So, what [music] we're doing with the future self work is we're focusing in on one reality and allowing that future self to then shape our present moving towards it. That future self creates its own sort of gravity and entanglement. We become entangled with it. I know it sounds complicated, but it's one of the most powerful things I've ever learned and I'm teaching it at my events. We're going through [music] a three- or four-day process where we're trying to connect with that future self and allow that full merging to happen.
>> [music] >> And it's creating real, profound, dramatic, drastic changes in people's lives. Something I believe so strongly about I started doing these events in the first place because it requires more than a single [music] meditation. It requires a process. A process where you undergo >> [music] >> connecting to that specific and particular future self that then [music] brings you along, takes you over the bridge into that reality.
Here's the framework stated as plainly and precisely as science allows. The block universe tells us that the future self exists as [music] a fully real entity in the four-dimensional structure of spacetime. It is at a specific location in the temporal dimension in the same way that London is at a specific location in the spatial dimensions. [music] The fact that your experience has yet to reach it does not diminish its reality. It is there.
>> [music] >> The retro-causal interpretation of quantum mechanics tells us that quantum systems are influenced by their future boundary conditions. The equations of quantum mechanics are time-symmetric. The wave function of a system evolves both forward from the past and backward from the future. The present state of a quantum system is determined by both simultaneously. The nervous system is a physical system composed of quantum mechanical processes. The The of genuinely inhabiting the future self of feeling it with the full specific embodied reality of the exercises that this activation provides is the practice of making that boundary condition more coherent more precisely defined, more powerfully present as a retro causal influence on the quantum level processes of a nervous system moving toward it.
Future self technique is in the most rigorous available physical language the deliberate strengthening of a retro causal signal >> [music] >> from a future boundary condition that already exists and is already influencing the present moment. You're tuning to a signal that is already broadcasting. You're receiving a transmission from a self that is already real. Come now to the activation, the direct experience of what the physics describes.
Now, I want to explain that you're already in contact with your future self. You have always been in contact with your future self through the retro causal influence the physics describes, through the backward evolving wave function that Aharonov mathematics requires through the boundary condition that a fully realized future self exerts on the quantum system of the nervous system navigating toward it. This contact has been continuous, precise, and generous. [music] It has been expressing itself in your life as the specific quality of knowing that arrives before the conscious mind has assembled its evidence. As the persistent pull toward certain directions, certain creative expressions, certain people and places and practices >> [music] >> that the rational mind cannot fully account for. These were messages. [music] These were the retro causal signal of your own most fully expressed future self reaching backward through the time symmetric structure of a universe that has never separated past and future as completely as common sense insists.
Feel that contact now. I just want you to take a moment, put your hand on your heart. I want you to feel the contact now that exists in this moment with your future self. Feel the quality of connection to something ahead present [music] in the block universe with the same physical reality you carry already fully expressed already inhabiting the life you are moving toward >> [music] >> already organized into the specific and magnificent configuration of your most complete becoming. It is real. It exists with the force and the precision of a physical fact rather than the tentativeness of a wish and it is already in communication with the system that is you the nervous system, the electromagnetic field of the heart the quantum level processes of the biological instrument listening to my words.
Open the communication with your future self now. Deliberately with intention, [music] say it out loud, I intend to connect to my future self. Consciously with the full understanding of what the physics says is happening when you do. Allow your body to receive a truth that the mind has been given [music] the future is real. This is physics. This is the implication of Minkowski space-time confirmed by every precision test of special relativity ever conducted. The year of your fullest expression exists. [music] The moment of your greatest creative contribution exists. The morning when the financial abundance you have been reaching toward is simply the ordinary condition of your life exists. [music] All of it present. All of it equally real in a four-dimensional structure that is [music] the universe as physics understands it.
Feel what happens in the body when this truth lands fully. The reaching quality that has characterized the relationship >> [music] >> with the future the quality of straining toward something at a distance of extending toward something that may or arrive depending on effort and circumstances and forces outside your control shifts. The future self is already real. >> [music] >> The reaching is the experience of time flowing through a dimension that already contains the destination. You are moving through a structure that already contains your arrival. The arrival is guaranteed by the existence of the future self in the block universe. You are moving through a structure that already contains [music] your destination.
Feel the future self now. Feel the specific reality of it. A specific configuration [music] of experience and freedom and creative expression a material abundance that the block universe already contains. Feel the future self of your greatest timeline [music] now. It already exists as fully as you exist. It's already exerting its retro causal influence on the quantum system [music] of the life navigating toward it. The signal is clear from that direction. Are you receiving it?
Close the distance deliberately. In the block universe the distance between [music] your current temporal location and the location of the future self is real. You are moving through it one moment at a time at the rate that conscious experience always moves through the temporal dimension. In the retro causal framework the distance is a direction rather than a barrier. The future self is already influencing this present moment through the backward evolving component of the quantum wave function. The transmission is already active.
What the practice of conscious self inhabiting does what the activation you're engaged [music] in right now does is increase the coherence of the receiving system. It amplifies the signal to noise ratio. It sharpens the clarity of the channel through which the retro causal influence of the future self is already flowing. Feel the transmission beginning to clarify. The future self signal carries specific information, the texture of the mornings of that life, the quality of the breath when anxiety is absent, the deep aliveness of a being in complete correspondence with what it is. Feel the specific quality of the future self's signal. The particular frequency of a consciousness that has arrived into a full expression of its abundance its creative freedom. The frequency is specific, carries specific information the texture the quality, it's all there. Feel these now as information arriving from a real source because that is precisely what they are. They are the retro causal signal of your own future self arriving through the time symmetric structure of the universe that physics [music] describes received by the quantum sensitive nervous system that you inhabit. Receive them fully.
The future self signal becomes more powerful as your receiving instrument becomes more coherent. This is the physics of the practice [music] a tuning fork held near another tuning fork the same [music] frequency like I always mention as an example. The physics of coherent systems responding to each other across space between them. A radio receiver tuned precisely to the broadcast frequency receives the signal clearly. A receiver that generates internal noise of its own through the static of fear through the interference [music] of scarcity, through the contradictory signals of a consciousness arguing [music] simultaneously for and against the reality of its own desired future receives the same transmission with diminished fidelity. So, I'm asking you to become coherent now. Release for this moment every story >> [music] >> that contradicts the reality of the future self's existence. The story that says the path is too long obstacles too substantial, evidence [music] too thin, hope too dangerous. These stories generate internal noise in the receiving system. >> [music] >> They reduce the coherence of the instrument. They make the retro causal signal of the future self harder to receive. And in making it harder to receive they reduce the degree to which the future boundary condition shapes [music] the trajectory of the life navigating toward it.
Future self is still [music] transmitting. Universe is still time symmetric. The quantum system is still influenced [music] by the future boundary. Reduce the noise, [music] increase the coherence, become the instrument that receives the signal at full fidelity.
Now, you are a boundary [music] condition as I've explained what that means. You are a boundary condition on your [music] own past. In the retro causal physics the future self exerts backward influence through the [music] time symmetric equations. As a boundary condition on the quantum systems [music] that preceded temporally. This is why revision works. You're going back and [music] revising a past experience as your future self. Your future self is revising the past and making you what you are when you tune in [music] and entangle with that version of your future self and everything is working so perfectly. Your future self is a boundary condition [music] on the quantum process of your present nervous system. And your present consciousness inhabiting the frequency of the future self deliberately and coherently is a boundary condition on the quantum process of the days and [music] weeks and months ahead. Every moment of genuine future self inhabiting reshapes what comes after it. This is the mechanism of the practice state in the most rigorous available language. The conscious felt specific inhabiting of the future self's frequency. The practice of being the arrived version of yourself in the body in the breath in the electromagnetic field of the heart with full sensory specificity and full emotional charge. The universe responds to boundary conditions with the precision of math. A boundary condition constrains the space of the possible futures. It organizes the field of possibility around the specific attractor it represents. The future self consciously inhabited with full coherence and full specificity >> [music] >> is a powerful attractor in the block universe. And attractors >> [music] >> in physics shape the trajectories of systems moving toward them. You are shaping your trajectory now by inhabiting the future self in this moment. By feeling the specific quality of the life already real in the block universe. By experiencing in vivid imagination and vivid total visualization. By feeling the specific quality of the life that is real. You're [music] acting on your own timeline with the full creative authority available to a conscious being who understands [music] what the physics says is happening.
It's an ancient practice. Mystics who sat in silence inhabiting the realized self were engaging this exact mechanism. From the state of coherent reception, allow the future self to communicate. This is what's amazing. Your future self can communicate [music] with you. Allow the information that is already moving backward through time through the time [music] symmetric structure of the universe to arrive with the clarity it carries. When the receiving system [music] is quiet and coherent and fully available. The future self has specific knowledge. [music] It knows what the path looked like. It knows the turning points that mattered and the obstacles that resolved themselves. Let the knowledge arrive now in the form it takes when retrocausal information moves from the future toward [music] the present as intuition as sudden clarity as the specific quality of knowing that feels more like remembering than discovering. As the image that arrives whole as the direction that clarifies without requiring justification. Reserve it. Whatever arrives in this moment of genuine quiet coherent reception, [music] trust it. With the trust that physics supports, you are receiving from a real source. This is not just daydreaming or words coming to your mind. The future self exists. The transmission [music] is real. The retrocausal signal is genuine. The information arriving in the silence of this moment is arriving [music] through the exact mechanism that the most current understanding of quantum mechanics describes. [music]
You are already in contact with the self you're becoming. You've always been in contact with the self you're becoming. This practice is the conscious recognition of a communication [music] with a specific future self. What has happened [music] here will persist. The understanding of the physics creates a container [music] for the practice that ordinary future self visualization alone cannot provide. I did not dumb this down. I said it for a reason. I'm speaking to a part [music] of you that needs to understand the science of this. When it's understood as engagement with the physical reality as the deliberate strengthening of a retrocausal signal from a future boundary condition that the block universe already contains, it carries the weight of physics behind it. The future self is real regardless of whether the practice feels vivid on a given morning. [music] The transmission continues regardless of whether the receiving system is generating its clearest signal. The physics is the foundation. It functions in the absence [music] of belief. It was functioning before you knew the vocabulary. The retrocausal influence of your future self was shaping the quantum processes of your nervous system before you had the framework to recognize what was arriving. The block universe contained your future self before you had the concept of eternalism with which to understand what that meant.
What changes with understanding is the consciousness [music] engaging with it. A practitioner who understands the physics brings a quality of genuine grounded physics-informed confidence and [music] faith that what they are doing is engaging with something real. Go forward [music] from this activation with the understanding installed. Practice is real work. The most real work available to a conscious being who has understood what the universe is. This creates [music] magic. You can specifically focus on a specific kind of future self creating a future boundary condition that will re-align and change and [music] transform your life. Universe is time symmetric. You are a participant. You've always been a participant. The future self is already real. The signal is already traveling backward through time. All you have to do is receive it. The most realized version of your life exists. It's in contact with you. Receive this transmission. Follow the signal. Time flows both ways. The future is real and the self you are becoming has been reaching back toward you since before you understood what reaching was. I want you to receive this. Follow the signal. The future self exists. It's within you. It is real. Physics is on your side with this. It is done. You have merged with your future self through this very unique understanding. >> [music] >> It is retrocausal. The more you focus and spend time in consciousness know that it is done.

I put that like I do that every day, and I really saw the effects of it change in my life, and you think it's cliche when you're reading an affirmation, but I know for a fact it changed my whole life because this year I was awarded with so many great awards based off that. And then you you don't see We don't see the instant gratification right away, but as time goes on, you get to reap the benefits of when you really are putting in the work, doing those meditations, clearing those blockages, and Brian has really helped me with that. It's time I've been at, and it really is. It's wonderful. So, like I would highly recommend to anyone if you get the opportunity to do it, absolutely do it. It really is amazing.
