The first house is the house that contains the ascendant. This is a Cardinal house, an angular house, so its focus is on starting something new. The first house represents the beginning of life and describes the persona, or the mask, that first layer of ourselves that we present to the world. This is the house that shows our birth, and it represents the developmental stage of life between zero to 18 months old.
The first house describes our initial impulses and the first steps forward. Our style of survival is described by the first house because it is showing what we did and do to survive as an individual, as a person separate from our parents, and the area of life where we play out the warrior archetype. It is an instinctual house as well because Mars, as the natural energy of the first house, is about our response to instinct.
The first house is a personal house. It's how we view ourselves as a separate identity, as it is opposite to the seventh house of how we view others. The first house shows the first impression, the first information that we put out there about ourselves, so it's much like the rapper on a candy. This house also shows the physical body and how we project it into the world, and describes the head and face.
We interpret planets in the first house in a very personal way. We consciously identify with a planet in the first and see it as part of ourselves. Planets in the first house show how we are going to use that planet to initiate or start things. The first house, which also contains the ascendant, is the primary lens that we will interpret our reality through, and so it is the main color we see our world tinted by. The first house is considered a yang house as it carries a masculine energy. It has fire qualities, is a cardinal house, and the perspective is personal. The sign that rules the ascendant determines the masks that we wear.
