If you ever wondered why our wet clothes darker than when they are dry, you're on the right place because that's exactly what I'm going to try to explain to you today. Something that we see every day, but not always do we ask why that happens. So, I'm just going to try to explain it in the easiest way possible.
Basically, what happens if you buy clothes is they actually are made out of fabric fibers. And cotton has a very good refractive index. By what what I mean by that is that when the light hits the cotton or the fabric fibers that are there, it actually reflects a lot of the light back. And that's the reason why we see it as something lighter because the amount of light that is reflected back from the object itself is the amount of lightness that we see it as. Lighter something we see it only means that the object reflects more light back into our eyes.
And so now you might be having the question of why does then the wet part of the clove reflect less light? And then it becomes much easier to understand because when you put the water there, the fabric fibers actually kind of sip the water in there. And because water has a lower refractive index. That means it reflects less light back or much less than the dry clothes did. It absorbs more of the light, reflects less light back and that's the reason why it appears darker and it just seems so simple when you understand it.
And so again, this is somewhere very very simple science helped me answer my question and probably gave me even a better sleep.
