Transcription

Any device that restricts or inhibits movement can be harmful to a brain-injured child. We adults have created backpacks, strollers, walkers, playpens, and wheelchairs. We think these devices are for the child, but in reality, these devices are primarily to make our own lives easier.

These devices take away the opportunity for movement for the child. Some of these devices, like the backpack, the stroller, and the wheelchair, immobilize the child. Extended periods of immobilization can affect the development of the visual pathway, breathing, digestion, sleep, general health, and language development.
