Thank you. Thank, thank you very much.
Well, Gracie, what's new?
Oh, I got a wonderful letter from home. My niece Jean is graduating from grammar school, and I just, just a minute, years ago she graduated from high school. I remember sending her a present. That's what did it. She had to go back to grammar school to learn how to write so she could send you a thank you note. Well, I should be getting a letter from her any, you know. Oh, she's a very nice girl. Oh, I wish we could be there. I hate to miss it.
When any Allen graduates, it's it's a rare occasion. Oh, it certainly is. I wish you could have been there when my sister Hazel graduated. She wore a white cap and a long white nightgown, and she looked so pretty. She wore a what? She went to night school. That ought to do it.
Yes, and then there was my cousin Barney. Oh, he got a great honor when he finished up at Mission High School in San Francisco. Um, he was chosen to make the graduation speech. Oh, that was a great honor. Yes.
What did he talk about? Well, his subject was, um, "Memories of School Days That Will Last Forever." And he stood up on the platform and he said, "Fellow students of..." Then he sat down, and everybody laughed. Forgot the name of the school. Not only that, he forgot there wasn't any chair.
Were they all that brilliant in your family? Well, no. Now take Edgar, Uncle Otis's boy. Oh, Edgar? Yes. When he graduated, he was next to the lowest in a class of 400 and made his father real angry. Well, I don't blame him. Well, neither do I. No father likes to be beaten out by his own son.
Well, did Edgar go on to college? No, no. He decided to be a great scientist, so he sat under a tree and waited for an apple to fall on his head. Head? What, um, what would that do for him? Well, who knows? That's what Isaac Newton did. And while Mr. Newton was waiting for the apple to hit him, he thought up the law of gravity. Yeah. Well, that's a great, great, great system. But did it work for Edgar? No. But it wasn't a waste of time. He did figure out why the apple didn't fall on him. Why? Because he was sitting under a willow tree.
You say good night. Good night. Good night.
