Let's listen to what the Lord says in His Word, and then we’ll come to Him in prayer.
Right now, at this very moment, the enemy has loaded his bow with arrows of doubt, fear, anxiety, discouragement, and despair, and he's aiming directly at you. These aren't ordinary arrows - they're flaming arrows designed to set your faith on fire and burn down everything you believe about God's goodness, His promises, and His love for you. The devil doesn't fight fair. He strikes when you're tired, when you're vulnerable, when you're already struggling.
But God has given you a weapon so powerful, so effective, that it can stop every single one of these attacks. It's not a small decorative shield that barely covers your chest. It's a massive, life-saving barrier that can cover your entire life when you learn how to use it properly. Today, I want to show you how to take up the shield of faith that extinguishes every flaming arrow the evil one fires at you.
Ephesians chapter 6, verse 16 declares: "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." When Paul wrote these words, he wasn't thinking about a small, decorative shield. He was picturing the massive Roman scutum - a rectangular shield that stood about four feet tall and two and a half feet wide. This shield was big enough to cover a soldier's entire body when he crouched behind it. It wasn't made of flimsy material either. It was constructed from layers of wood, covered with leather, and reinforced with metal edges.
But here's what made this shield truly remarkable in battle: before facing an enemy that used flaming arrows, Roman soldiers would soak their shields in water. When those burning arrows hit the wet shield, they would be instantly extinguished. The fire couldn't penetrate. The attack was completely neutralized.
This is the picture Paul wants us to have when we think about faith. Your faith isn't a weak, passive hope. It's a massive, active defense system that can extinguish every attack the enemy launches against you. But just like the Roman soldier had to actively take up his shield and position it correctly, you must actively take up your faith when the attacks come.
The enemy's strategy hasn't changed since the Garden of Eden. He still uses the same types of flaming arrows, and they're all designed to destroy your relationship with God and rob you of the abundant life Jesus promised you. The enemy launches multiple flaming arrows to destroy your faith. His arrow of doubt whispers, "Did God really say that? Can you trust His promises?" Fear paralyzes you with lies like "This problem is too big for God." Anxiety torments with "What if everything goes wrong? What if God doesn't come through?" Temptation seduces with "Just this once won't hurt. You deserve this pleasure." Accusation attacks your identity: "You've sinned too much. God can't forgive you." And despair convinces you "It's hopeless. Nothing will ever change."
Each arrow is designed to make you surrender your faith and give up on God's promises when victory may be just around the corner. But here's the incredible truth: your shield of faith can extinguish every single one of these arrows. When doubt comes, you raise your shield and declare, "God is faithful, and His Word is true." When fear attacks, you lift your shield and proclaim, "God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind." When anxiety tries to overwhelm you, you position your shield and announce, "I cast all my anxieties on Him because He cares for me." When temptation strikes, you use your shield and declare, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Faith isn't just believing that God exists. Faith is absolute trust in God's promises despite what your circumstances look like. Faith is choosing to believe God's Word above your feelings, your fears, your doubts, and your past experiences. Faith is active, not passive. It requires you to take it up, position it correctly, and use it effectively.
Just like the Roman shield provided personal protection, your faith covers your whole life - your thoughts, your emotions, your decisions, your relationships, your future. But also like the Roman soldiers who could lock their shields together to form an impenetrable wall, when you join your faith with other believers through prayer, fellowship, and mutual encouragement, you create a collective defense that the enemy cannot break through.
Your shield of faith doesn't just protect you - it allows you to advance. You don't have to retreat when the enemy attacks. You don't have to hide when the arrows start flying. You can move forward in confidence, knowing that your faith is extinguishing every flaming arrow before it can reach you.
But you must learn how to take up this shield properly. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. You can't have strong faith without regular exposure to God's promises. You must know what God has said about your situation, your identity, your future, and your relationship with Him.
When the attacks come, you must speak faith out loud. Don't just think faithful thoughts - declare God's promises with your mouth. There's power in the spoken Word of God. When you verbally declare His truth over the enemy's lies, you're actively extinguishing his flaming arrows.
You must stay in fellowship with other believers. Isolation weakens faith, but unity strengthens it. When you're under heavy attack, you need other believers to lock shields with you and help you stand firm.
Now, let's come before our mighty God in prayer, asking Him to strengthen our faith and teach us how to effectively use the shield of faith He's given us.
Heavenly Father, I come to You today acknowledging that I am in a spiritual battle. I recognize that the enemy of my soul has been launching flaming arrows of doubt, fear, anxiety, temptation, accusation, and despair at me. I confess that too often I have tried to fight these battles in my own strength, and I have not always used the shield of faith that You have provided for my protection. Lord, I thank You that You haven't left me defenseless against the enemy's attacks. You have equipped me with everything I need for spiritual warfare, and You have given me the shield of faith that can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Now, Father, I ask You to strengthen my faith. Help me to truly understand that faith is not just a feeling or an intellectual belief, but an active choice to trust in Your promises regardless of what my circumstances look like. Teach me to take up the shield of faith consistently, positioning it correctly to deflect every attack the enemy launches against me.
When doubt comes knocking at the door of my mind, help me to immediately raise my shield of faith and declare Your faithfulness. Remind me of all the times You have proven Yourself faithful in my life and in the lives of Your people throughout history. Let Your Word be so deeply rooted in my heart that doubt has no place to take hold.
When fear tries to overwhelm me, help me to lift my shield of faith and proclaim Your perfect love that casts out all fear. Remind me that You are my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Help me to remember that You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and sound mind.
When anxiety begins to torment my thoughts, help me to position my shield of faith and declare that I can cast all my anxieties on You because You care for me. Remind me that You are in complete control of every situation and that You work all things together for good. Help me to choose peace over panic, trust over torment, faith over fear.
When temptation presents itself as attractive and appealing, help me to position my shield of faith and announce that Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Give me the strength to choose righteousness over sin, holiness over compromise, eternal rewards over temporary pleasures.
When the enemy hurls accusations at me about my past, my failures, my unworthiness, help me to block those arrows with my shield of faith and declare the truth of Your grace. Remind me that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Help me to remember that Your blood has cleansed me from all unrighteousness and that I am accepted in the beloved.
When despair tries to convince me that my situation is hopeless, help me to stand firm behind my shield of faith and proclaim that with You all things are possible. Remind me that weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Help me to remember that You are the God of hope who fills me with all joy and peace as I trust in You.
Father, I pray that You would saturate my shield of faith with the water of Your Word. Just as Roman soldiers soaked their shields before battle, soak my faith in Your promises so that when the enemy's flaming arrows hit, they are instantly extinguished. Let Your Word dwell richly in my heart so that I always have truth ready to counter the enemy's lies.
Help me to speak faith out loud when I'm under attack. Give me the boldness to declare Your promises with my mouth, to quote Your Word in the face of opposition, to proclaim Your goodness even when circumstances seem to suggest otherwise. Let my spoken declarations of faith become weapons that not only defend me but also advance Your kingdom.
Teach me to pray with unwavering faith, believing that You hear every prayer and will answer according to Your perfect will and timing. Help me to trust Your wisdom when Your answers don't match my expectations. Give me faith to believe before I see, to hope against hope, to stand firm even when the answer seems delayed.
Connect me with other believers who can lock shields with me in times of intense spiritual warfare. Surround me with faithful prayer warriors who will stand with me in faith when my own faith feels weak. Use me to strengthen the faith of others when they are under attack. Help us to form an unbreakable shield wall that advances Your kingdom and defeats the enemy's strategies.
Lord, I thank You that victory is already mine through Christ Jesus. I thank You that no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I thank You that greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. I thank You that through faith I am more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me. I declare that my shield of faith is strong, effective, and ready for battle. I declare that every flaming arrow of doubt, fear, anxiety, temptation, accusation, and despair is extinguished before it can harm me. I declare that I will not retreat but will advance in faith, taking new ground for Your kingdom and bringing glory to Your name.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, I pray. Amen.
If you're ready to take up the shield of faith and stand strong against the enemy's attacks, please type "I take up my shield of faith" in the comments. I believe that as you declare this truth, you're positioning yourself for victory in every spiritual battle you face. Amen.
