They even participate in the synthesis of some vitamins. As long as their numbers are in balance, you don't notice them. They are quiet neighbors who pay rent on time and don't make noise at night. Here, one thing needs to be clarified. Nail fungal infections are caused by different types of fungi. Most often by dermatophytes, which come from outside through contact with an infected surface, and less often by yeast fungi of the Candida genus, which grow from within. But in both cases, the key question is one: why couldn't your body resist them? Why don't the same fungi take root in your neighbor, but they feel at home in you? And here we come to the internal environment. Candida is a genus of yeast fungi that is present in the vast majority of people. It lives in the gut, in the mouth, on the skin, in the genitourinary system. In a normal state, its population is tiny; bacteria and neighbors keep it under control. But when the balance is disrupted, Candida does something frightening. It changes its shape. From a harmless round yeast cell, it grows long threads, hyphae. These threads grow through the intestinal walls like tree roots through asphalt. They literally pierce the mucous membrane, and through these microscopic openings, toxins, undigested food particles, and fungal cells themselves begin to enter the bloodstream. They spread throughout the body. And more importantly, these internal processes weaken the very barrier that should protect you from external infections, including dermatophytes on the nails. But let's start with the most powerful and simplest. Sugar. Candida feeds on glucose. It is its main fuel. Studies have shown that in an environment with a high glucose content, Candida colonies grow several times faster than under normal conditions. Every portion of sugar is a feast for billions of fungal cells inside you. And here is a trap that almost everyone falls into. When Candida overgrows, it begins to affect your brain. But there is a nuance. Allicin does not live long. 15 minutes after crushing garlic, its concentration begins to drop, and when heated, it is destroyed almost instantly. This is more than the cells in your entire body. Bacteria, viruses, fungi. All of them coexist on a thin mucous membrane, the surface area of which, if all the folds were unfolded, is equal to the size of a tennis court. And on this tennis court, a struggle for territory takes place every day. When there are enough friendly bacteria, lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and several hundred other species, they occupy all the space. Candida and other fungi simply have nowhere to grow. This is called colonization resistance, defense through colonization. Imagine a parking lot where all the spots are taken. You can circle as much as you want, you have nowhere to park. But what happens when the cars start to leave, when the beneficial bacteria die? There are three reasons, and each hits hard. First - antibiotics. A course of broad-spectrum antibiotics can destroy a significant portion of the gut flora, in severe cases up to more than half of the entire population. It's like carpet bombing. Both enemies and allies die. But Candida is resistant to most antibiotics. It survives. And when the competing bacteria are dead, and the parking lot is empty, the fungus occupies the freed space in a matter of days. The third element of our system is coconut oil, unrefined, cold-pressed. It contains caprylic acid. A medium-chain fatty acid. It works differently than allicin. If garlic destroys the fungal cell membrane from the outside, caprylic acid penetrates the cell and disrupts its energy metabolism. The fungus loses the ability to produce energy and reproduce. A double blow: one to the outside of the cell, the other from the inside. One tablespoon of coconut oil in the morning on an empty stomach. You can add it to porridge or smoothies if you can't eat oil in its pure form, but it must be unrefined. In refined oil, caprylic acid is practically absent. And the fourth element is sauerkraut. The older one has clean nails, smooth skin on his feet, no problems. The younger one has fungus on six out of ten nails, cracks on his heels, and athlete's foot that hasn't gone away for three years. It is a specific mechanism that every second decides whether the fungus in your body will be a calm tenant or an aggressive invader. Here's how it works. In your blood, there is a group of cells called neutrophils. They make up up to 70% of all leukocytes. These are rapid response soldiers. When fungal cells begin to grow hyphae and try to penetrate tissue, neutrophils surround them and destroy them. They throw a mixture of enzymes and reactive oxygen species at the fungus. Essentially, they douse it with acid. The second echelon is macrophages. These cells work slower but more thoroughly. They engulf fungal cells whole, literally eating them. One macrophage can engulf up to twenty fungal cells in a row. And critically, macrophages remember the enemy. They pass information about it to T-lymphocytes, which form a long-term immune response. When this system works at full capacity, the fungus has no chance. It exists in the body, but in minuscule quantities, under complete control, like a petty hooligan in a city where there is a policeman on every corner. But after the age of 55, something happens that in immunology is called immunosenescence. The thymus, the organ behind the sternum where T-lymphocytes mature, shrinks by 70-90% by this age. It is almost completely replaced by fatty tissue. The production of new immune cells declines, neutrophils become slower, macrophages recognize threats less effectively. And it is at this moment that the fungus gets a green light. Not because it has become stronger, but because there are fewer police officers on the streets. This is why fungal infections are so common after fifty. Not because of the bathhouse, not because of the shoes, not because someone forgot to wear slippers in the pool, but because the immune system can no longer cope with what has always been inside and around. And here's the good news. Immunosenescence is an irreversible process. It can be slowed down, and in some aspects, reversed. But this requires specific substances that become critically scarce with age. First, zinc is the number one mineral for the immune system. Without zinc, no type of immune cell works. It is needed by neutrophils to produce those very killing enzymes. It is needed by the thymus for T-lymphocyte maturation. It is needed by macrophages for activation. Studies show that in elderly people with zinc deficiency, fungal infections occur several times more often than in those whose levels are normal. And here's the trap. Zinc is poorly stored in the body. It is consumed daily for immunity, digestion, wound healing, hormone synthesis. And with age, its absorption from food decreases. You can eat enough foods with zinc, but the gut absorbs only a small part. The fifth element of our system. Pumpkin seeds. 100 grams contain almost 8 mg of zinc. This is more than beef. But the main advantage is that the zinc in pumpkin seeds is bound to amino acids, which increases its bioavailability. It is absorbed more easily than from most other sources. But there is one detail left, without which all of this may not be enough. There is one organ that quietly sabotages all your efforts, and most people don't even suspect its role in fungal infections. As Candida grows and multiplies, it doesn't just take up space; it produces waste products, dozens of different toxins. The most dangerous of them are acetaldehyde, which I have already mentioned, and gliotoxin. Acetaldehyde is the same poison that is formed during alcohol breakdown in the body. This is why people with advanced candidiasis often feel as if they have a constant mild hangover: foggy head, fatigue, irritability. Gliotoxin acts even more insidiously. It directly suppresses immune cells, reducing their ability to respond to threats. And all these toxins need to go somewhere. Guess which organ is responsible for their processing? The liver. 1.5 kg of tissue in the right hypochondrium, through which 1.5 liters of blood pass every minute. The liver is your body's main filter. under the diaphragm. When you take a deep breath, the diaphragm lowers and gently presses the liver from above. On exhalation, it rises, and the pressure is released. This rhythmic massage speeds up blood flow through the hepatic vessels and stimulates bile outflow. And with bile, those very toxins that the liver neutralized are eliminated. Technique: sit up straight, place your right hand on your lower ribs on the right side to feel the movement. Inhale through your nose for four counts. The abdomen expands, the ribs spread apart. You feel your hand lifting. Hold for two counts, exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts. The abdomen retracts, the ribs contract. Hold again for two counts.
