On this island, every time a child is born, someone else has to die to keep the population balanced. The island can only support 513 people. When the grandfather saw that his grandson was born healthy, he didn't hesitate. He jumped off the cliff so the balance [music] could stay intact. He believed that would keep peace on the island.
But then the doctor revealed something shocking. The woman was carrying another baby, a girl. That meant one more person would have to die. The island leaders immediately called a meeting. Some people said breaking the rule once wouldn't hurt, but others disagreed. The outside world was already infected with a [music] virus and once the rules broke, everything would fall apart.
So they created a point system. Everyone would earn points for good behavior and lose points for bad behavior. Whoever had the lowest score would be chosen to [music] die. A boy was watching the screen when he saw his name. Third from the bottom. He panicked, afraid he might be next, but his friend told him not to worry. "My mom is one of the leaders. She'll protect you."
The next day, the leader secretly told her son's friend how to earn points. She told him to hand out apples to people. He did exactly that and earned 10 points. Moving up the list. A few days later, voting began. The lowest score belonged to a wood cutter who had stolen food earlier. The crowd voted for him to die.
As they were taking him away, his wife suddenly stood up and revealed a horrifying truth. She said the island leader used to take her into a dark room and force herself on her. If she refused, their food rations would be cut. At first, [music] no one believed her. But then more women stepped forward, all saying the same thing.
The boy froze in fear and ran to his mother, begging her to protect him. But in front of the crowd, she couldn't say a word. In the end, the votes turned against her own son. Over 400 people raised their hands for him to die. The boy was now the one chosen, but his mother couldn't watch him die. She made a decision. He would be sent outside the island instead. Since the outside world was full of deadly virus, everyone agreed. They locked him in a prison-like cage.
That night, his mother came to see him one last time and gave him her gold necklace. She said it was the only thing she had left to give. She hoped it would help him survive out there. The next day, armed guards took him off the island. As he was leaving, [music] he broke the wood cutter's nose without hesitation. He didn't feel bad at all, but when he reached the ruined city outside, fear finally hit him. He begged the people to take him back, saying his mother would give them anything. They beat him instead. They already hated him.
