Hello busy dads and busy people everywhere. It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon here in New Hampshire. I'm hanging out with my daughter. She's doing a solo back there on on her straw. And my window of opportunity to finish my burpees is getting smaller and smaller.
This has been the scrappiest week for me on record. I came into today with 40 minutes left of burpee training still owed. And there was a point in this day when I didn't see how I was going to do it. Yesterday, our beloved cat James went missing. And well, in fact, he went missing two days ago. And after a really harrowing day of searching yesterday, right at the end of the day, we found him about a mile away from the house in a in in a um in a neighbor's backyard inside hiding inside um a metal pipe. He was badly injured. He had a big gouge on his right leg. He couldn't put any any weight on his um his paws. and we found him at about um 9:30 and we were at the emergency vet. It was a very very um upsetting evening. Um luckily he's going to be okay. The vet thinks he's probably broken, had a fracture in his pelvis, but probably not going to do surgery. He's recovering well at home. It was quite the ordeal, quite the adventure.
Um, and it meant that the sleep routine was thrown off so badly that when the alarm went off this morning, um, I couldn't do it. I couldn't bring myself to do it. So, I slept through that. So, I woke up today. Um, this little one in the back was up 10 minutes later and I had to break a golden rule of my own, which is I hate training if the time that I'm spend training is at the expense of family time. I started on a family workout and I just a workout where I had my daughter upstairs and it just didn't play out properly. Uh I got six minutes in and I had to stop. So I 6 minutes down, 34 to go. I thought, how the hell am I going to make this happen? And I figured why not micro dose? And so that's what I've been doing all the way through today. I've been micro doing burpees. Whenever no one's looking, I drop down my basic unit. is four five pump Navy seals over the course of 60 seconds. And so far I have done 27 minutes. I've got 13 left to go. I've got a couple of windows of opportunity. I'm going to sneak them in and by the time I go to bed tonight, all 40 minutes worth of training will have been done.
Now, is this ideal? No. No. No. It is not ideal. Is this as beneficial as regular good old-fashioned 20-minute workouts? Of course, it isn't. On the other hand, it is infinitely better than doing nothing. A little pin prick for the metabolism every hour or two. No bad thing. Excellent muscular stimulus. And also mentally, it is a reminder every every hour or so. That micro dose of burpees reminds me of who I am, what I stand for, what I'm all about. It is invigorating. And by the skin of my teeth, I'm going to keep my five and a half year uninterrupted run of 80 minutes per week of training. I'm going to keep that streak going.
Now, my friends, if you're find yourself in a position like the one I've been in, you coming into Sunday, you're behind schedule. I was almost going to say there's no shame in that. That's not right. There's plenty of shame in that. You should be ashamed. I was ashamed today. I was pissed off at myself. And that's how you should be. But there is infinitely more shame in not getting those 80 minutes done. And until it's midnight on Sunday, there is always a way. So find it. Whether it's little burpee micro doses, little sets of 2 minutes, whether it's one long 60 or even 80 minute session, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that you get the work done. It is so so so important to start building up a streak. 10 weeks, 50 weeks, 100 weeks. Put the weeks together, put the months together, put the years together. If you are consistent in your practice, that is when it will change your life. 80 minutes per week is not a big ask. But this can only work if you are consistent religiously week in week out. No exceptions ever for anything. I've had to remind myself of those fundamental principles today. I really, really nearly let this one slip through my fingers. And I luckily have you guys because I didn't know how I would face you. I didn't know how I would tell you that and so I found a way.
Right, with that speech over, my daughter and I are about to go and get a toffee apple. She's very, very excited. Probably not paradigm healthy, busy dad family nutrition, but um the toffee apple has been promised the toffee apple will hopefully dislodge a tooth that is wobbling and threatening to come out. She's very excited about. So, we're going to go and get a toffee apple and hang out a little bit. And um if you site a small child eating a toffee apple and a bold father next to her doing five pump Navy Seals in Dova, New Hampshire, um you you know who it is you'll be seeing. All right, my friends. So, however you have to do it and however ridiculous you have to make yourself look in the process, do your 80 minutes because my god, you will be thankful for yourself and my god, you won't know how important it is that you maintain the practice until you give up some minutes. Don't do it. Never do it. Don't do it. All right, my friends. I will see you all again soon.
