Imagine stopping for gas, grabbing a snack, or pulling cash out of an ATM, and without even realizing it, handing your credit card information directly to a criminal. It sounds dramatic, but lately, social media has been flooded with real people posting their videos discovering card skimmers on gas pumps, ATM machines, and even retail store payment terminals. In some cases, the fake devices are so good that even the store employees don't realize that they're there.
Today, we're going to take a look at some of the shocking examples that real people are finding out in the wild. We'll talk about how these scams work and we'll also try to figure out why they're popping up everywhere and who puts them there. And this video is for educational purposes because once watching this, you might never look at a card reader the same way again.

There's not two keypads there." And she's like, "BS. There's not two keypads there. Look. Look." And she literally pulled it. It slid right off. It slid right off.
So, let's talk real quick about how exactly these card skimmers work. This is you basically giving criminals all of your card information. As soon as you slide it in, you hit the code. They've got your PIN numbers. They've got your PIN numbers. All of that information is just simply routed right back to the criminals. And so, yes, you absolutely have to report this to the police. In the event that you do find one, it needs to be reported because stealing your credit card and your identity does not just happen on the internet anymore. It is happening in real life situations at grocery stores, retail locations, ATM machines, gas pumps, anywhere you can slide a credit card in, someone can put a card skimmer. And it is not good. They are popping up everywhere.
And this is something else, too. A lot of people seem to think that anytime there are card skimmers found at retail locations that the employees have had something to do with it. Now, while I will admit a lot of the times that could be true, but later in this video, we're going to take a look at some examples of how these card skimmers end up on these machines without the employees knowing any better. But then there are also some circumstances where people find card skimmers where the employees almost look like they've been caught. See here, they both knew. He definitely knew. Usually an employee for real. I pull the keypads everywhere I go before every transaction. And sometimes that's what you have to do. We'll look at some examples of like how to tell if there's a card skimmer on the machine so that you can be more educated on what to look for so that you're not just like running up to machines everywhere just like plucking and pulling at it. You'll you'll see the telltale signs. We'll get to that. Definitely the employee. He knew. >> Not saying. Literally admitted to knowing it was there, then forcefully took it. Right. It's like he took it back and he's like, "Oh, nope. That belongs to me. Thanks. That's mine. That's mine. Thanks. Thanks for finding it." And the lady said again, "He definitely planted it." Is what someone said. Did she say again? Uhhuh. Say hello to all the black. >> I mean, I don't know if she's saying that to like to calling the police, calling the police again or another skimmer, but that's definitely sus. He panicked, bro. And if you end up figuring out that there is a skimmer on a machine and you've already put your credit card in, absolutely call your bank, call your credit card company, call whoever you need to and freeze that card because the faster you freeze it, the less likely they are to be able to use that information to their advantage and steal your money. And this was another Dollar Tree completely unrelated.

We've already seen two Dollar Trees. Everybody's thinking the cashier did it cuz he did look very suspicious. Right. You guys, there's a skimmer on here. You got to pay for that. >> Okay. Don't do that. >> Don't do that. Okay. Don't do that. Why? Why? >> These people are acting like he's ruining the machine. Either. Okay. So, either these employees are like, "Don't do that. Don't do that." Because they think that he's ruining their machine or they know that there's a skimmer on there and they put it on there. Which one do you think? Let me know down in the comments. They totally know it was on there. They definitely know. Definitely has to be an inside job. At my job, I would 100% know if someone put a skimmer on the machines or not. Yes or no? Possibly. Again, we're going to look at some videos where employees didn't know that it was there and they looked at footage seeing how it got put on. So, again, we're going to look at that here in just a minute.

Some of them pop right off, but I would tend to suspect that the ones that are a lot more like soldered on there, they were done by the employees for sure because of this. Yeah. That was a nasty one. Yeah, he had to completely unscrew the whole back in order to get it off, which tells me that they probably knew.

So that tells me that it was probably someone who just very quickly put one on. It was probably not an inside job if it just fell off that easy.
>> Hey guys, so I found another skimmer device. Uh basically, um if you come to a pump and you select the buttons and they kind of have to be forced in and they're not popping up like they should be, most likely you have a skimmer device. This one is the overlay that captures your data when you when you type in your button for your pin number. That's being recorded and that's also being transmitted. So when you slide your card and you push the buttons, the numbers are being captured on this device here. Now, as far as your card reader, if you pull this, if you ever go to a any place where you can swipe your card, most likely this is what they put there. So, if you can try to pull it and it's loose, most likely they have a skimmer device and that's where they're capturing your mag strip or your chip on your card. So, this one captures your pin. This one captures your car. >> That's right. Gas pumps, too. The the thing that inserts it. Damn it, man. Mari, >> check right here. Come this way. Yeah, >> that's how they do it. >> Can you put it here, please? Cool. Check. Check. >> See, to me, that one looks obvious because it's so big and bulky, but some of them are so thin and sleek, it's really hard to tell the difference. >> So, I'm at the gas station, and this pad looks a little funny. So, I saw this corner lifted up a little bit, and wouldn't you know, there's buttons under that. It's aing skimmer. I had to move to another pump cuz I wasn't about to use that one. But look, you can tell the difference. There's no gaps here. You can't lift that. All right, it's time to start carrying around flathead screwdrivers. That way we could walk up to and just like see if we can get it up because god dang, they're freaking everywhere, man.
Okay, so now we're going to take a look at some examples of store clerks that did not realize that there was card skimmers put on their devices. It was only when they went back later to look at footage to see who exactly put the skimmer on.
>> And I looked at my card reader over here and I just see it right on there and I just grabbed it and I ripped it right off. >> Anderson Fernandez says it almost looked identical to the real deal, but it wasn't. He ripped this skimming device off his card reader seconds after he says this customer put it there. All caught on camera. >> All I hear from behind me is plastic trim going into place. And when I turn around, uh, I look at my card reader and I immediately see it on there. >> Fernandez says after he ripped it off, the man and a woman he was with both left. He called police. They're now investigating. We saw officers back at the family-owned market today. >> It would have hurt my business, would have hurt my customers, and who knows like how much damage it could have done. Detectives say this is now the fifth incident involving a card skimmer that they've seen since July. Just earlier this week, another one was found at a store literally two blocks from here. That just goes to show that the people that are doing this are literally going business to business. They were on the same freaking block. On the same freaking block, they found another skimmer. Not to mention that the business would look like they are the ones doing the skimming. Absolutely. We saw multiple clips already where the employees look very very suspicious when the skimmer is found and this owner clearly did not do it. There was the footage to prove it. But most times people just assume that the store is in on it and then they might start boycotting the store or they might stop going back there because they think that their information is going to get stolen. But sometimes like in circumstances like this, the person that's operating the store had no idea it was even on there. It was only because they heard the plastic and then checked the footage to see a freaking criminal walk in and put it on there when when nobody was up there at the register. This surveillance footage is from a local business and shows a suspect attempting to place a card skimmer. The suspect who places the device works with two other suspects who are distracting the employee. The suspect removes the device from his pants and attempts to place it several times before removing it. The second video shows the suspect returning to the card reader and successfully placing the card skimmer. These images are of skimming devices recovered locally. These devices were concealed inside card readers. As we approach the holiday season, we know many people will be traveling and shopping, and we would like to offer the following tips. Use ATMs located inside a bank or business and cover the keypad with your hand to hide the PIN. Use the tap feature on cards if possible. Inspect point of sale terminals and ATMs before inserting your card. Look for broken or damaged tamper, evident tape, damage or loose parts, and deformities or bulges. Compare card readers at the location and look for differences. If you find a skimmer, notify an employee of the business. Remember, one of the best ways to stay safe is to be aware of your surroundings.
Yeah. See, it's not always the employees. This cashier is just ringing up purchases, doing what she's supposed to do, and this sneaky as customer is just like putting it on there. That's how easy it is to put these skimmers on, you guys. That is how easy it is to put these skimmers on. That's why they are everywhere. And what's even scarier is it is not just retail locations. It's not just gas pumps. It's also ATMs. That's right. When you want to go pull cash out somewhere, they're putting skimmers on ATMs to get your card information. Oh, just found ATM skimmer. Just had to run out and get get my phone. You see the evidence there? Sheesh. Circuit board. The reason why I knew is because my card went in for me. Now, a lot of the times, just like he just said, it's not even just about visually seeing something. It's not just about seeing like a corner lifted or the buttons pressing a little weird or there being a separation in the trim. Sometimes you just notice that something doesn't feel right. And that's why he was saying he noticed that his card went in a little strange and that was what made him look a little bit deeper. So, you just you really have to just pay attention. And when something seems out of the ordinary, you need to kind of take a minute and be like, "What's actually going on here?"

If you come to the Bank of America in West El Camino and you see this a strip like this, it's a card scanner reader. I went I went over here to this HM machine. He literally saw it didn't work. it. This doesn't have it. This one doesn't have it. These are good. >> These are how you check. Cuz if these are removed, someone took them off. >> Are you guys hearing >> loose >> or there's missing labels, don't use that machine. If all these machines are supposed to look identical, one of these things doesn't look like the others. >> So, look at So, you guys you guys heard what he said. Now, look. Now, now look now look what he said. It like this right here has the bank. It has the Bank of America, their their rights. It has the visa sign. Now look, it has the same information, right? Where's that information at? Where's There's nothing there. But then he took it off and look bad. Bad. Bad for business. Like that. So whoever did that, the the police need to come. >> That's not good. >> That right there is freaking Bank of America. A Bank of America ATM. Someone put a skimmer on it. And that's a really good point. It's to pay attention and notice inconsistencies. Why was that one ATM not having the stickers on the side? It's because there was a skimming device on the freaking side. It wasn't even It wasn't even the card reader or I mean, it could have been the card reader, but the whole freaking skimmer was taking the side of the damn ATM. They're everywhere, you guys. We have got to be careful.
Okay, listen to these numbers, you guys. This is absolutely staggering. Nationwide, an estimated 61.3 million Americans experience card fraud every single year. 61.3 million Americans. That is roughly 168,000 people every single day get their card numbers stolen. 168,000 people every single day in the US. And that translates to roughly $16.8 million every single day in fraudulent purchases. Those numbers are freaking wild. We have got to do better with paying attention so that we can cut down on this because even if you have a credit card or a bank that's willing to work with you and get you your money back and issue you a new card, it's still a headache. Nobody wants to go through that. And if someone's going to reach their greedy little fingers into your bank account and take your money, you don't want to have to wait to get it back. Let's let's stop the theft before it happens. Make sure you're checking card readers. Be diligent about watching your surroundings. Pay attention. Be more aware. There are ways that you can avoid accidentally sticking your credit card or debit card into a card skimmer. You can use Tap to pay every single chance that you get. You can place orders online and do pickups instead of shopping in store. You can take an extra half a second to even pull on the little thingy a little bit just to make sure that nothing easily pops off.
