What's good everybody? It's your boy Clans, and we are back with day nine of Proverbs. We are back once again, and we're staying consistent every single day. For those that have not watched day eight, day eight is actually posted. I posted kind of late, I'm not going to lie to y'all, due to us having Bible study, but it still got posted. It was just late night. So for those that didn't watch day eight, please go watch day eight. That was a great one. I'm not going to lie, y'all, that's probably one of my favorite ones besides, um, Proverbs 5. That's probably my next favorite one so far of the series. But yeah, go back and read that one.
But yeah, today we are on, we're on day nine. We've come a long way. Day nine is a really short one. There are only 18 verses in this one, I think. Yeah, it's only 18 verses in day nine. So this is probably going to be quick. So for those that want it to be a little bit longer in detail, it probably won't be as long, but we'll still get the day done regardless. So yeah, another drill, we're going to pay, pay what we're paying. We're going to pray right in, and we're going to get right to reading the word. So all minds clear, heads bowed, eyes closed.
Lord, thank you for waking us all up this morning. Thank you for allowing us all to see another day once again. And thank you for just, um, your grace and everything that you have just blessed upon us, Lord, for us to continue to take every, every day, day by day, to just get closer to your word, Lord, to get closer to you, Lord, and to seek your presence, Lord. So I ask that you forgive us for our sins, Lord. We repent right now, Lord. Anything we've done knowingly, unknowingly, Lord, everything that may not have represented you the right way, Lord, any thought, every action, whatever it is, Lord, we repent right now, Lord. We ask for forgiveness, and we ask you apply your word to our lives, Lord, every single step of the way, and for us to learn even something new today, Lord, that we can shift our minds and our lives for the better, Lord. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
All right, y'all. Y'all ready? For some reason, in my NLT Bible, this one does not have a title. But in my, um, my Amplified Bible, it says the title says wisdom's invitation. So I like that. I like, I like how that sounds. So let's get right into it. Proverbs chapter nine, verse one. It says, wisdom has built her house. She has carved its seven columns. She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. "Come in with me," she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, "Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways behind and begin to live. Learn to use good judgment." Anyone who rebukes the mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt. So don't bother correcting mockers. They will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. That's good. Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more. Fear the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you'll be the one to suffer.
Verse 13. And this one actually has a title. It says Folly calls for a hearing. Verse 13. The woman named Folly is brash. She is ignorant and doesn't know it. She sits in her doorway on the heights overlooking the city. She calls out to men going by who are minding their own business. "Come in with me," she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, "Stolen water is refreshing. Food eaten in secret tastes the best." But little do they know that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave.
That's crazy because that's all, that's, that's our reads for today. That's it. So let's read it again real quick. Um, I'm going to read the breakdown in my Bible, and it says chapter 9:7-8. It says, "When someone tries to help us and correct us, we have two choices. We can either listen and learn as the wise do, or we can get angry and rebel as the mockers do. To mock and hate those who are concerned for us is to deny that we have a problem. The wise are honest enough to admit that there is a problem and that they need help. Mockers will reject good advice and be overtaken by their sins, while the wise will learn from it and prosper." That's good. So that's basically what the whole chapter is about.
All right, yeah. Since it's such a fast read, we're just going to go ahead and break down on these verses. So verses 1 through 6 in chapter 9. So we're going to read verses 1-6 real quick. It says, "Wisdom has built her house. She has carved in seven columns. She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. 'Come in with me,' she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, 'Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways behind and begin to live. Learn to use good judgment.'" In my Bible, it says the invitation to join wisdom for a lavish meal is met by a competing invitation, which is in verses 13 through 18. So we're about to tap to that, um, later on.
So verse one, it says the number seven can denote grandeur or fullness. So the seven columns represent the grandeur of wisdom's house, the place where it dwells. Verse two, in the ancient Near East, a great banquet would accompany a marriage, a military victory, or the making of a treaty. Wisdom's celebration marks the beginning of a committed relationship with the Lord. That's good. That is good. Excuse me. Verse three, throughout the ancient Near East, temples were built on the heights overlooking the city. A commitment to wisdom involves a commitment to the Lord. I like that. Verse four, wisdom makes her appeal especially to the simple and those who lack good judgment because they have not decided between wisdom and folly. See verse nine, see verse 16, where folly mimics and perverts wisdom's words. Okay, I like that. I like how he spelled that. Verse six, wisdom gives people the ability to navigate life successfully.
Verses 7-9. These verses seem to create an award breakdown between the invitations of wisdom and folly. But perhaps the purpose is to caution that in contrast with inviting the simple, inviting mockers and the wicked is futile at best. Such people have already chosen their path and respond to wisdom's advice with violence. But contrast, the wise appreciate corrective advice. They welcome it and benefit from it. So that's why in verses 7-9, y'all see where it says, "Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt." Because people that don't like being corrected are going to take it the wrong way. So in verse eight, it says, "So don't bother correcting mockers. They will only hate you." But correct the wise. People that are wise, people that can take constructive criticism, actually want to hear constructive criticism versus people that don't like taking it. They resort to violence, basically. They resort to joking back. They resort to talking back and, um, not taking heed to what you're actually trying to say. And they don't realize that you're actually trying to help them. They don't want to be helped. So it's best to just leave them alone and correct the person that actually wants to hear criticism, the person that actually wants to hear, um, how they can work better, how they can live better, how they can walk better, you feel me? Yeah, that's good.
Um, um, verse 10-12. Fear the Lord. See study note. Cool. Um, verses 13-18. It says the woman named Folly also invites the simple and those who lack good judgment to join her in the banquet she has prepared. Her invitation and advice are antithetical to wisdom's. Her invitation and advice are antithetical to wisdom's. Verse 13, "The woman named Folly is brash." Fools talk boldly and without shame, but have nothing intelligent to say. Say, don't, don't let that go over your head, man. Verse 14, "On the heights overlooking the city was a traditional location for a temple." Folly personifies false gods and goodnesses that compete for the affection and loyalty of God's people. Like wisdom, Folly has prepared a banquet for her guests. However, this meal is dishonest and perverse. Folly's dinner and guests end up in the depths of the grave, in contrast to the reward for wisdom's guests. So see verse six for that.
So verse six, it says, "Leave your simple ways behind and begin to live. Learn to use good judgment." Verse five says, "Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed." So when you go to party with wisdom, verse eight, I mean, verse six, you have to leave your simple ways behind, and then you begin to live, and you have to learn to use good judgment. But when you go to party with Folly, which is in verse 18, "But little do they know that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave." Hey boy. Verse 17, she says, "Stolen water is refreshing. Food eaten in secret tastes the best." So she's encouraging you to live a sinful life. She's encouraging you to do the opposite of what wisdom is telling you to do. Yeah, I like how they did a comparison with there. And that reminds me of, basically, this whole read basically reminds me of, for those that watch TV shows or movies, it reminds me of the TV shows that depict an angel on your shoulder and then a devil on your right shoulder, you know what I'm saying? And it always shows how your mind will have, you'll have the wisdom side of your mind, and then you'll have the flesh side of your mind that'll be like, "Yo, just do it." Wisdom looking like, "Ah, I don't think you should do that right now." Like the angel be like, "Hey, I don't think that's smart. Don't do that. Don't say that to them. It's going to hurt their feelings." Flesh was looking like, "Nah, they deserve it. They did this to you. You need to say something back." And I love how it depicts this in chapter nine because wisdom is really trying to help not just you, but the betterment of everybody that's also around you, that's connected to you, and the, and the perception of who you are and who you're reflecting, which is God.
But yeah, when you start taking decisions seriously, you have to understand that you're always going to have the wisdom side of things and you always have the flesh side of things. And when your flesh is speaking, your flesh is always going to want to react off impulse, off your first emotion, off of what you feel like you should be doing. But wisdom is going to sneak in and be like, "Hey," with a whisper, "Hey, I don't think you should do that. I don't think it's a good idea." And you'll start feeling that type of, that type of doubt. And my dad always says, "When in doubt, leave it out." So if I have to doubt, if I doubt, if I have to have a hesitation there, if I feel like I shouldn't say that, you probably shouldn't say it. You might, you might want to keep it in. You might want to hold it, you feel me? So I love how they depicted that in this Bible. Nothing too crazy, um, in these reads today.
I do want to highlight, um, verse nine though, because it says, "Instruct the wise, and they will become wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more." And verse 10, "Fear the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment." And 11, "Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life. If you become wise, you'll be the one to benefit. If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer." So verses 9 through 12 were probably the main things I highlight for this one, strictly because if we really want to live out wisdom, you have to be able to accept constructive criticism. You have to be able to accept people that want to see you do better, people that want to see you live the life that God has called you to live. So it's best that you open your ears to be able to hear that. But if you start closing your ears off and you start reacting in a defensive way when somebody tries to correct you, or if somebody tries to, um, correct you constructively and you take it the wrong way, then you might need to check your heart posture and figure out why are you so offended by someone that wants to lead you to a better life, you feel me? So that's all we got for the day. That was quick reads. That was like 10 minutes, not going to lie to y'all. That was real quick.
So all minds clear. All minds clear. God, thank you for another blessing for us to even be able to read your word again, Lord. Ask that you bless us to even learn something new as we read chapter nine today, Lord, on day nine. I thank you for even giving us the, the revelation and analogy of what wisdom and folly are comparing to, Lord, of the analogy of the angel versus the devil that usually be our thoughts of what's good and what's bad. So I ask that you give us the discernment to understand and give us ears to hear what wisdom is actually trying to tell us to do so that we can make smarter and wiser decisions, Lord. So I ask that you cover us today, prepare us for tomorrow for day 10, and bless us to continue to learn and apply your word to our lives, Lord, in every single way. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
