Chat GPT meets custom MCPS. But there is a caveat. You need to implement two tools to make chat GPT accepting your MCP server. Otherwise, you are going to get this error.
I'm going to show you how to create an MCP server that is compatible with OpenAI. But first, let me show you how to add this MCP servers in GPT. Go to your settings and go to the connectors. Click create. And here we have it. Let's capture the information for the MCP server. I'm going to use pet store, the the pet store that I always use in my demos. And uh with that, we click create. And here we have it. We have the pet store running and connecting to the external pet store services. Let's give it a try.
I'm going to uh connect the MCP server. I need to enable the MCP server in my session. And now I can just uh request information. You need to be very explicit on your prompts. Even in in the documentation, OpenAI suggests you to use explicit name of the MCP servers and the MCP tools. So that's not the whole point in lens. But anyways, let's get the information from the MCP server. And here we have it. That's it. We have uh this response from the MCP server.
Now let's see what are the tools implemented in the MCP server. I'm going to use Cubot and MCP CLI client. I connect to the MCP in the port 3000. And with that, we can list the tools. And here we have it. Uh search and fetch, the two tools that OpenAI expects in your MCP servers.
Now, let's see side by side Happy Server and the Qbot. I'm going to start the Happy Server using the pet store specification and adding this chat GPT flag. With that we have an MCP server compatible with OpenAI. And here again let's connect to the MCP server using Qbot the MCP CLI client. This MCP server is exposing the port 3000 and it's going to communicate to the back end uh in the internet. Once it is connected is going to list the tools and in in once it is connected is uh requesting the tools and let's list here in the command line and here we have it search and fetch.
