Visited the neighborhood where Richard Cox was arrested some 10 days ago and happened to catch up with a resident of Lilac Street who was able to offer a medical perspective on how police handled this case. Because in the video you can see as soon as he hits, he's not doing what we would call like a normal range of motion. He's a New Haven EMT who lives on Lilac Street, which is where Richard Randy Cox was arrested 10 days ago.
And as a medical professional, he addressed how police cared for Cox following his severe injury. Like, we're in the business of fixing things when things go bad. And so when you're in that business, you kind of have to have a certain mindset that I'm here to fix situations and not make them any worse. Cox remains paralyzed from his mid-chest down. Whether police exacerbated Cox's injuries is part of the criminal investigation.
When you see stuff like that, it's those lapses in judgment that make it hard on everybody, meaning all first responders. Cox could be heard repeatedly saying he couldn't move, but police still proceeded to drag him from the police van rather than waiting for the ambulance that was on its way. I immediately have to do assessment, or what we call like a neurological assessment. So I got to test their grip strength, can they move their toes, their pulse in their feet, different things like that, in their arms.
Cox was a fixture on Lilac Street, residents say. In fact, he was helping to run the block party on the street the day he was arrested. "It's heartbreaking, heartbreaking. I got three sons of my own. Like, I just, I wouldn't know what to do," that longtime resident said. She's thrilled that nationally renowned civil rights lawyer Ben Crump is now on the case. "I love the movement and I'm more for it because us definitely here on Lilac Street, we definitely ready to back up the family."
And Assistant New Haven Police Chief Carl Jacobson, who could be confirmed as the new chief come early next week, says he is anxious to right the ship here at the New Haven Police Department and has a plan in place to do so. Here in New Haven, Tony Terzi, Fox 61 News.
