To cope is to make a specific alteration on a physical, mental, or emotional level, usually so as to adapt to a stressor or a stressful situation.
Now, a lot of people talk about coping as if coping is a really good thing. You'll hear a lot of people in the self-help field and the psychological field talking about how we need to find ways to cope with things.
The problem with this is that often, especially in our adult life, we can make a change to some circumstance that's causing us stress and we can eradicate a certain stressor from our life, and yet we're not doing it. Instead of making that positive change or instead of making it so that stressor does not exist as an element in our life, we're keeping ourselves in these situations the way that they are and we're simply adapting to them, and in ways that are profoundly dysfunctional as well.
What circumstance or situation or stressor are you making an adaptation to instead of changing in a situation where you absolutely could make a change to it so that you weren't in that situation anymore or so that stressor was not something that was in your life anymore?
