How to Get Anyone to Tell You Anything

This is how the Russians got 90% of intelligence from the United States. It's a very powerful tool.

The first is triggering the need to correct the record. Second is provocative statement. And you just kind of start with "so" or "I bet." So you've been a CEO for a long time and you're like, "Oh yeah." And you talk about your company and say, "I bet that's challenging." Or "I bet that's really rewarding."

And then you say another answer to that and they say, "Wow, it sounds like you've probably got between 20 and 70 employees that are working for you." And that is called bracketing. I give you a bracket number and it's also triggering a need to correct the record.

But if I'm sitting here and I ask you, "How much money do you make? How long have you been the CEO? How many employees do you have for your company?" That's arrogant, weird. But all of this is just through statements.

So I challenge everybody that I teach, see how long you can go. You will be stunned. You can go hours, like somebody sitting next to you on an airplane. You can go almost the whole flight without asking questions. And that person, within like 10 or 15 minutes, you're going to be stunned at the level of data that comes out of another human being.
