The link's in the video description. To those of you who don't like when I stop and talk, for those of you that do, let's jump in.
>> Welcome, Amy, to the Dating Intentionally podcast. I'm so excited to chat with you today.
>> Oh my gosh, thank you for inviting me. I love your your whole platform and so I'm so excited to be here.
>> Yes. Well, you know, it's so funny how our journeys have a very parallel like happening in different decades. Can you just tell our listeners a little just a quick cuz you what do you call it? You call it like turbo dating, right? Tell us a just a little bit how you got into that.
>> Oh, well, she got older. That's generally how they get into it. Good old turbo dating, right? That's the Super Mario Speed one. I haven't heard that, but that is a very good way of putting it. It's just cycling through guys, whether it be on dating apps or even first dates slash coffee catchups, whatever it may be, and trying to rule them out as quick as possible. They're not looking for good things. They always seem to be looking out for negatives to cut you off because they have such a high volume of guys that they think are there for commitment. Most aren't, but they think they're there. So, they're trying to thin the herd, so to speak. And so, you're going to get all those questions, the standard questions that that we all know and talk about, especially dating say over 35, right? You're dealing with women even over 30, I would say. But 35 plus is when it starts to become a very much a job interview. There's no fun involved in it really. Uh it's purely questions. It's purely check running down a checklist and trying to work out if you are an idiot who's going to commit in a shortest amount of time possible with the least amount um of resistance. Now, people can say that's very cynical, but why else do you think they have terms like turbo dating?
>> Yes, I don't recommend it, but this is what happened. So, I got myself out of my 20-year marriage, which was the scariest thing I've ever done. And this was a number of years ago. I was in my 40s in New York City, terrified of online dating, terrified of what was in front of me. I had no idea if I would ever find love again. I left a marriage that was really good but not necessarily great.
>> And oh, and people are taking advice from people like this. If you've been married for 20 years and you can say it's good, you are in an absolute minority. But to say, "Oh, it wasn't great though. It wasn't fairy tale stuff. It wasn't um Christian Grey. Wasn't James Bond. So, I thought I would just, you know, chuck the guy back out. you know, throw him in the rubbish bin and go back onto the dating market looking for something better. Like story of these women's lives. The amount of dates I went on with women, you know, even 30 plus, not even not even 40 plus, I'm talking 30 plus that have been married for, you know, a few years, 5 years, 3 years, whatever it might have been. It's blown up. She's walked out for whatever reason. And they're already saying things to me like they're looking for their person. They're looking for, you know, their true love, their soulmate. They're looking for a really great relationship to take over the world. And you got to think to yourself, hang on, you just made all the promises in the world in front of people most most likely at a wedding ceremony, saying to death there was part and all this sort of stuff for better and worse and good health and bad health. you would have made little customized speeches saying what you loved about him. For whatever reason, uh that didn't hold up well uh to the test of time and you're back out trying to sell it again. Dime a dozen.
>> And I kind of took a leap of faith. And so here I was in New York hearing all the horror stories and I had a little time on my hands because I was at this inflection point in my life where I was like leaving this business and I was leaving my marriage and leaving my best friend and like really reinventing myself. And so I did have some time and I did turbo date which again don't try this at home but I was on some days via the apps going on four five I think six was my my record per day dates per day.
>> That's wild.
>> Insane. I mean fully fully insane. I mean the barista I knew like loved I would always go to the same coffee shop and he was like all right who do we have today? and and I would sort of like do these I call it mini screener dates which are 45 minute just vibe check dates and I would space them out and I would have my laptop in between and sometimes.
>> That's insane right and that's what I'm saying to guys that's why you don't go and buy things that's why you don't do dinners you don't even I would even dare say coffee unless you really like it unless you think it could go somewhere if not just seeing you know if you're just sussing it out try and just meet her for a chat you know walk at a local park or if you're near a beach or the ocean, sit down near the ocean, have a chat somewhere non-threatening in daylight, whatever for them, so they're comfortable. But these women are treating it like a a game. And so I say to guys, don't think because she's talking to you that she's not talking to other guys. The guys get this in their head. This woman's been sitting around waiting for him. The the moment that that she matches with him, she thinks he's got her full attention. She's not. She's doing screen dates. She's sitting at a coffee shop. Like, I dare say this will probably be on the more extreme end, but look at the other girl on the left there. She's laughing. She thinks it's great. Let's let's let's screen out for jobs. Let's see what the best commercial and lifestyle benefit we can lock in is in a coffee shop. Play running through five guys a day on these dates trying to interview them and work out which one to throw back. That's why don't we don't pay for [ __ ].
>> It got awkward, but here we are. Like they're lovely.
>> Wow. I mean, yeah, I agree. Like, don't try this at home, you know? I my my whole thing is I went on 64 first dates in 10 10 months, which is with my.
>> Oh, what? 64 first dates in 10 months? You got to be kidding. Now, I think to my understanding, she is married or engaged or something, but 64 dates in 10 months. Think about how many I would dare say the average man out there like her looks match uh who's a male would not be getting 64 days in his whole life be getting six a year. It's all exciting, right? It's all shopping. Look at the look at the fun and excitement. Always say it's like a game. Uh it's like a hobby. It is a hobby. Think about that. 64 verse dates.
>> My version of that and why did you do that? I have my version of like what got you there?
>> That's a great question. So, I have sort of a social anthropology brain. I think you do too. It's sort of like just really curious after hearing all these horror stories. I thought first of all, love is everywhere. Love has to be available for me and for everybody. Why is it so hard? like why does dating get such a bad rap? Why am I hearing only horror stories? And so I kind of wanted to crack the code in a way of like, okay, if I wanted to become a chef out of nowhere, I would probably cook a lot. I would probably make a lot of mistakes. I would make a million different dishes. I would try different recipes. That's kind of what I was doing. And I I mean, I failed horribly so much of the time. I mean, I want to be clear, like I didn't know what I was doing. I was trying to be chosen, which I'm writing a book right now. And the whole thesis is, you know, it's not about being chosen, it's about whether you're aligned. But I didn't know any of that. And so I just kind of used the same skill set that I had used my whole life in dating, which is, wow, I can't wait to feel butterflies and chemistry and then everything else is just going to click into place.
>> So that's you know, we're talking this, you know, do they never grow up, do they? So you would you would expect to hear something like this from an 18-year-old girl, any old woman, 25-year-old. You've been married for 20 years. You threw some guy probably for no reason to the curb, blew his life up to go out date looking for butterflies, then get disgruntled when you're not getting those butterflies. Make it make sense, gentlemen. Make it make sense. 45 years old saying everyone deserves love. Love is abundant. Uh why is it so hard? Uh you're 45 divorcee. You'll get action easy. You'll get guys coming in and tapping it. You know, the Steos and the Bryes and the Chads, they'll be in there. But um the good ones are going to be sort of dodging this.
>> It's how I start it. And as you can imagine, wow. It's like it's an extreme numbers game. I know I keep stopping it, but it's an extreme numbers game. It's the same. You think about think about this. It's it's more or less the same thing. You got younger guys, right? Um 20-year-old, 25, maybe 30-year-old guys who haven't built themselves up yet. Um aren't immediately or instantly showing value to women, right? They're on all these dating apps. They've got five dating apps. They're on there all day. They're bloody match. They're trying to match, you know? They're trying to convert. How do I know I've done it? You're trying to match. you're trying to convert, you're playing purely on statistics and probabilities. Eventually, you get them right. When a woman jumps, she doesn't have to do any of that. They're on the receiving end of that. They got all these guys bloody lining up wanting to take him out. All she needs to do is work out the best deal. She needs to do the evaluation of the suitors. Now, look at this. It it it changes. So the women get a bit older or they lose some of their value just due to some of their lifestyle choices, i.e. going through divorces. That's going to put a lot of guys off, especially immediate commitments that it's not going to put them off action. So she's on there going through extreme volumes. Same the same as a 20-year-old man would do on a dating app. Have a think about that. I mean the stories.
>> Oh my gosh, I I love it. And yes, I relate obviously so much to your story, you know, and that approach of just like I want to throw myself in, fail a lot, and figure it out and just see what happens. And along the way, you do learn that the butterflies and sparks just aren't it.
>> They're not it. They're not it. I mean, it's really astounding to me that finding your person is arguably the most important choice of your whole life.
>> Yeah.
>> And yet, we are the most ill-prepared for the journey.
>> I mean, I feel like in seventh grade, we should be learning interpersonal skills and relational skills and learning what you stand for and learning how to ask thoughtful questions of other people to see if you're aligned with them, whether it's a friend or a romantic interest. I mean, it really blows my mind that, you know, I have clients, ma, male, female, of every decade, and I'll have a female client at 60 years old come to me and say, I hope he likes me. I really, that's it. I hope. And I'm like, well, hold on. That's it.
>> That's all it takes. Do we know if we like him? Like.
>> So what are we saying now? So, they're saying, "Okay, gotten older now. Been out on high volumes of dates. Not particularly going my way, chasing the butterflies, chasing the feels, the spark. We know what that is. That's chasing guys who are over and above them. They want to feel like they're winners. They're getting something exciting. They're getting a good deal." And what happens? They go, "You know what? I'm 45. I need to lock in a second husband here. I'm going to start changing my criteria to be a guy who more or less is just okay, but who will take the deal on?
>> Classic.
>> How do we know? What do we.
>> So, it's it's a whole process.
>> Yeah. Well, I want to come back to your work and your clients, but just I know everyone listening is probably just dying to know. How did you meet enough people to have six dates in one day at some point?
>> Oh, I mean really it was the apps.
>> Another question that people had was when did you bring up your divorce on these dates? Like when did I did that come into the vibe check?
>> Yeah. So so interesting. At the beginning when I was sort of turbo dating blindly, six dates a day, right? No. G man, you're cynical. With zero knowledge of what I was doing, I would hide that. I would I would at first I sort of hit it because I thought, oh, damaged goods, you know, it's not a good thing. I I'm gonna just dance around it. And clearly that bombed. I mean, that was a horrible strategy because you want to be honest and you want to be yourself and you want to show people where you are in the dating process. Are you just discovery dating fresh out of something? Have you been single a long time? And I wanted the answers to that, too. So then I had to be I realized I had to be really upfront. So then I changed my strategy and it was first date material where again I call it skillful vulnerability. You don't and nor should you vomit out your whole dating story, whole history on the first date, but it's something like this. You can ask someone on a first date, hey, how's dating going for you? And that question will elicit some really interesting, you know, answers.
>> I love that question.
>> Yeah. And information. And then of course you have to be ready to answer. So someone would ask me and I would I had one line. One line I said you know what I am out of a divorce pretty recently. It's very amicable and I have been in therapy the last three years really unearthing all of the elements and I feel great and ready to be out there and I'm excited. So it was sort of like a long-winded oneliner but it it was positive.
>> I love that so much. I think it's a great I want listeners to really take that nugget of advice because having your oneliner in your back pocket will really help soo your nerves if you're nervous about how to bring it up or what to say. I just love that so much.
>> Yeah. And it's your truth and and once you rehearse it a little bit then you can feel good about it and you want to know the answer to that question too. If someone it's astounding when you ask that on a date like people will say like oh I'm heartbroken. she just broke up with me last week and oh it's horrible or oh yeah I've been on the apps on and off and I just you know I I I really don't know what I'm doing and I'm not ready because ultimately we are looking for you know I call it my four pillars. We're looking for readiness. We're looking for emotional maturity. We're looking for core values like that alignment and then chemistry which we can talk about more because chemistry is not about the fireworks. It's about a slow build.
>> Slow build. So, it wasn't about a slow build before. It's a slow build now because they've got to talk themselves into going to a particular kind of guy. So, this is what I'm telling you. This what they're looking out for. That's why they're going on all these days. She even said it herself. Emotional. I'm going to say what was it was stability or willingness to commit. I think that was one of them. Something along those lines. I'm paraph paraphrasing here. But emotional maturity. I love that one. emotional maturity. Guys, you're mature if you want to sign up to commit um to an already divorced woman. If you don't do that, you're not mature. You're not a real man. You got to listen to some of the language here. I think an emotionally mature man is actually somebody who's looking at it from a place of what is he actually going to get out of this interaction and what are the risks involved in getting involved with someone who's already proven themselves to have blown up a marriage. Women hate that when you are flaky or or especially at this age, uh you'll find yourself getting cut off quite a bit. Uh blocked deleted deleted, left on red or whatever you want to call it, you know, ghosted. Uh it'll be when you when you say things that are non-committal and oh, this one used to work. It doesn't work anymore. The one that used to work is uh right now not looking for anything super serious, but I'm more than open-minded to things developing with the right person. Women have translated that now because too many guys have been using it. All that means is I'm going to say that uh it's not potentially a lie. So my conscious is clean. But however, the chances of that actually happening and converting are incredibly low here. So what they want a guy is going to give them leading indicators that they're going to give them what they want because they're running against the clock. So any sort of identification of a man who is going to be lower uh chance of being able to convert, he's gone. She'll just move on to the next one. You got six in a day, right? Six in a day. Astronomical.
>> Love it. I want to come back to the four pillars, too. Okay. But one other question though, just thinking about people who might be on the other side. If you're on a date with someone who says they're divorced, I often get these messages like, "I don't know. I don't know about that. I don't know how I feel about that." What would you want to say to that person who's like skeptical of someone who's just divorced?
>> Yeah. Well, divorce in general is not a dirty word. You want someone who's been through some stuff. I am more skeptical of the person who hasn't dated in six years at all and hasn't had many significant relationships. Right? If someone.
>> So, so you know, it's easier said than done, right? So, as I said, women are always able to get this attention. So, they can't understand men who aren't out there uh getting a lot of, you know, attention from women. That's seen as a red flag. Isn't that interesting? Because a red flag to a man is a woman who is giving off indicators that she's out doing six dates a day. A massive red flag, right? You wouldn't even bother with someone like this. Someone obviously has. I think she she's married. I'm just reading the information on the video. This woman on the right's married again. So, she played the numbers game for long enough. She she found her sucker. But for women, men who aren't out there and aren't actively dating for extensive amount of time. It shows to them that other women don't want them or they have challenges or they have confidence issues or whatever it might be. Things that women just aren't overly attracted to in a man. You want someone who's been through some stuff, but you also want to know that they value personal growth, that they are self-reflective, that they can talk about their experience, what they would have done differently, they can own their part of it. So, that's all part of emotional maturity. But I have had so many clients end up with people who were divorced, did a lot of work, and just they're wonderful, beautiful partners. So, I I really want to make that point.
>> Yeah, I'm really glad you said that. And also just want to touch on because there are so many people listening who have not had any relationship experience. That's not necessarily a red flag. What could be a oneliner for people who really don't have that experience and they know that people can be skeptical.
>> Yeah. So, I have a lot of clients who come to me and haven't had a ton of experience and they're very very self-conscious.
>> Who is paying for this? That's what I don't understand. And I don't understand how how men can go to what a divorced woman who is still she's still holding on to some beauty. Like she still looks good for her age. Like it would be not genuine to say that. But it took her dating six guys a day in some cases to lock down some guy. It's purely it's purely throwing. It's just doing a shotgun scatter scattergun approach here. There's no real strategy. The strategy was just keep getting out there. How do you need a someone to tell you as a man how to do it? She's a woman who did it. She can't tell you as a man what to do because those same things don't apply. So, a oneliner might might feel something like and again rooted in your own truth, but it it might be like, listen, I really haven't had that great big love yet, but I really haven't been intentional until now about my romantic life. So, I am really excited to meet my person, and I've been doing a lot of work on myself so that I know who I am, and I know kind of the traits that I'm looking for.
>> Yeah. The threat of.
>> No man says that ever. No man says that ever. I know that would have to be probably one of the biggest flags ever as a man. If a woman says that to you, hunting for her person, she's been on a healing journey, etc. Just signals someone who is not stable.
>> I'm noticing of all these things you're saying is positivity.
>> Yeah.
>> Positivity and truth.
>> Focusing on those two things. I love it so much. So, how did he end up meeting your husband, though?
>> Yeah. So, I turbo dated my way through New York and I had three dates on this one particular day. And I arranged the dates at Joe and the Juice on the Upper East Side because it was just where I was going to work out and it was sort of, you know, easy for me. And Brett was date number two of three that day. And I want to make this point to everyone listening that everybody thinks that they're just going to know that they're they're going to see that profile or that person walks in and it's just usually not the case. So, I had had one date first before Brett and that was that went really well. I thought, okay, Brett walks in, he is super smart and he sort of has a Steve Jobs uniform on and I'm straight from a workout and he is super serious on the date. Like, it was a 40-minute date. He he's a really interesting guy. I am talking about meditation and crystals and you know I'm I'm kind of floating around and he's sort of he's staying pretty serious and he literally left the date and I crossed his name off my notebook and I thought.
>> What?
>> Yeah. And I thought there's no way.
>> Way I'll hear from him. He thinks I'm crazy. I was just very me. I was trying to crack jokes that weren't landing. I was being nerdy and and so you know and I had another date coming. So I thought, okay, that's just a typical day for me. That's what you want to hear. Just a typical day uh sitting at a coffee shop having six BS come through for the interview. That's really what you want to hear uh your your now wife saying.
>> And um and then the next day I got a text from him and he was just really consistent with his texting and he was all of a sudden I started to feel like a little bit of warmth and I felt like huh he is kind of funny in his texting. was interesting. We were going on some some trips respectively and he's like, "How about I take you out on a date when you get back?" And I was like, "Great." I had zero expectations for the date. We went out to dinner and by the end of dinner, I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt and I thought, "Hm, wow, this is interesting. This is a little different than the first date." And then it just the the.
>> Good old Steve, you know why? She thought he started thinking he was funny and laughing at him and all that to suck him in. playing the cool girls doing full bait and switch action on him because he put a bloody uh he put a target on his forehead to say, "Oh, hang on." This guy here, he has no idea of the game. So now I can uh butter him up, getting him ready. Chemistry grew in reverse like little by little. The more like connectivity we had, the more alignment we had.
>> That is amazing. I'm so glad you shared all those details. One, I can't believe how parallel our situations are because I said the same thing after I had my first Zoom date with my husband cuz he we were like he wasn't in my location.
>> All right, let's move on. We'll go to a different section. Uh questions to ask by the fourth date. All right, let's listen to these.
>> Core values. If you're trying to figure out whether someone's emotionally mature, a really great great question is, "So, tell me about your last relationship. Oh, why did it end? And what do you want to do differently?
>> I guys, this is word for word what I tell you. This is literally what you will be asked. It is the most invasive and rude question to ask somebody. They'll ask you, "How long have you been single? How long was the relationship that you were in? Why did it blow up? What part did you have to play in that? And what did you learn from that experience? And could you see her perspective?" I've had I've had all those things said to me that many times. That many times. Digging for information. They're trying to see emotionally mature. Are you ready to be sucked in?
>> No, some of you are listening cringing because that feels really scary. And I don't it's not a first date question, but it certainly could be a second or third date question.
>> For sure.
>> You know, another example is like if you're like, "No way I'm asking that." Okay, maybe on your third date you're gonna say, "Okay, if your ex were sitting here at the table, what would she he say your best and challenging qualities are?" Right? So, it's like we really want someone.
>> It's a job interview. Once again, it's just not fun um going on dates with women at this age. I just This all starts well before they hit 45. This this starts at 30, 32. What sort of question is that? They'll probably say you're see you next Tuesday because you've buddy had a divorce and probably went through a messy litigation process. They're going to say you're great one to have the emotional maturity to not be freaked out by that question and say, "Oh, well, she would probably say I'm really like fun to be around and she would probably say like talking about my feelings is tough." And it is.
>> Yeah.
>> So, right, it's not about right or wrong. It's just about someone who's open enough to talk about these things.
>> I love this so much. I love the path from core values to questions you can ask on a D. I I use that technique as well and it worked really well for me.
>> What's an example of that for.
>> How do we speedrun? This is this is the this is the how do we lock down some sucker? How do we identify a guy who probably has no boundaries or is gonna have no backbone and is gonna is going to put up with all this crap? If I was to be asked that question, they go straight into the sled bucket. Like straight in, straight in and then he answer it in a very roundabout way. You don't give them anything.
>> For you, what do you mean? And for me, one of my core values that I was looking for was someone who would who had the desire, time, and money to do fun new things. Like novelty is something I really really value. So I would usually ask them like what trips do you have planned or what like what was your favorite trip of last year? Some people said I didn't take any which is like no.
>> Sorry.
>> I want a guy who focuses on spending money traveling. Look at him smiling. And if you say you didn't take a trip and you maybe might have focused on uh I don't know, sorting out your financial affairs, you're boring. You're a sucker. You're not fun. All right. You're not adventurous. Classic. At least straight out of her mouth. Looking for guys who want to spend money on traveling.
>> Doesn't have to be travel, but travel's just an easy one. And I obviously love talking about it. So that's the type of thing I would ask. I remember asking a similar question and I and what's your dream trip? And if if someone said, "Well, my dream my dream is I'm living it. I I'm a camper. I camp and that's all I do." I'm like, "Check, please."
>> Yeah. Yeah. I literally had.
>> You're not going to benefit in any way. Look at them. There's a couple of squawking little um couple of little birds laugh having a laugh, squawking along. And you're getting some good insights here, guys. I don't know why they put this stuff on the internet really. It's not actually giving any insight or inner learnings. It's just exposing it. And that's why I love making these videos because if you watch them and listen hard enough, they give it away for you. They just analyze it. You give it away for you. Comes like a second sense for me to just, you know, not second sense. Six sense to me. Second sense, six sense to me to watch these videos and comment on them and just pull out the garbage. So hang on. So if you go camping, because women hate camping, by the way, most of them do. That's a check please moment because she's not going to get a fun trip excitement and be lavished with attention and made to feel special because camping while they got to take a dump in a hole in the ground and there's maybe no showers for two days and you know it's not five-star luxury resort.
>> That too. Oh my gosh.
>> And no offense to campers. I love you guys.
>> But it's just not me. You're looking for that alignment. That's all what this is all about. Okay. Okay. So tell me about the other pillars? Like is it just about the questions? How else do you discover them?
>> Yeah, that's a great question. So readiness is I think the trickiest pillar to diagnose and it's the most arguably the most important one because people can want to be ready. They'll say it on their profile. They think they're ready. Bless their hearts. And they're not ready. So one of the ways besides asking like, okay, let's time jump five years. Where are you? Who are you with? And what are you doing? Okay. If they don't say, "Ah, I'm with my person. We're building our life together." Then they're not they're not ready. And it's sort of a trick question in a way, but like people will tell you. They'll say, "Well, I hope I I think I'm probably going to be traveling in Europe. I don't know." You know?
>> Yeah. Might be living across the country. I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. Yeah. That's that is definitely a scary question. I agree though that this is the trickiest one because people will think they're ready for a relationship, but they're really just ready for chemistry or some kind of kind of surface level connection that they can't really progress or they're just not. Yeah, they're just not ready.
>> So, this does not sound like any fun at all, right? I know I keep going on about this, but it should be fun involved. No, they're looking straight for they're trying to cut through all the fun. They've had their fun. It's time to settle down. They've been there and done that. They slept with a bunch of dudes. Now it's purely looking underneath that surface level chemistry for an idiot. Make it make sense.
>> You bring up a good.
>> These they're hunters. They're hunting targets down. You understand that you're the prey. Understand that.
