Final project, map one tutorial video. Make sure you have signed into a portal and that you have started ArcGIS Pro. Create a new mapping project and name it your last name final project. This is the project that you will be using for the remainder of the maps that you need to complete. Select okay and give the software a chance to start up.
Turn off the topographic and hill shade layers. From the insert tab add our class data set. Expand our class data set and expand the polygon layers. From the polygon layers, bring over precincts 2025 shapefile. Using select by attribute select and isolate your assigned precinct. Select the map tab select by attributes where precinct is equal to your assigned precinct. For these examples, I will be using the 18th precinct. Your precinct will be different. Select apply and okay. You will notice your precinct with its patrol sectors have been highlighted.
Create a new layer by right-clicking over the precinct layer. Going to selection, make layer from selected features. Once you have your new layer, right-click over it and rename it to your precinct number patrol sectors. Once you have your new precinct, you can turn off and move the precincts 2025 layer to the bottom of the contents. You will no longer need it. Save your work.
Next, from the points layer folder, add calls 2024. Using select by attribute, we're going to find all 911 calls that involved assaults. Select by attributes, input rows calls 2024, where type description contains the text assault. Select [snorts] apply. Give the software a moment to isolate the assault calls. Once you have your assault points highlighted, create a new layer by right-clicking over calls, selection, make layer from selected features. You can turn off and move that calls layer out of the way.
Next, isolate the calls that appear within your precinct boundary. Select the analysis tool, Pairwise Clip. Your input features will be your calls 2024 selection. Your clip features will be your patrol sector with precinct. Double-check your parameters and run the tool. When the tool completes, you will see a new layer. You can turn off the calls selection layer and move it. You will no longer need it. Rename the new clipped layer to something more appropriate. For example, your precinct assault calls. >> You should [snorts] now have two layers, precinct patrol sectors, and your precinct assault calls.
Rename the map work area to map one overview. Right-click over map, select properties, map one overview. Save your work. Right-click over your precinct assault calls layer, open up the attribute table, and record the number of total assault calls for your precinct. You will need that number in order to calculate the percentage of domestic violence calls from your total assault calls.
Next, graph the trends for time of day, day of the week, month of the year. Right-click over your precinct assault calls, select create chart, and select bar chart. The category will be the month name. Turn on label bars and sort your months according to calendar year by selecting custom sort and move the months appropriately with January to start and December to finish. Save your work.
You can close your months graph and create a new graph for days. And again, this is going to be a bar chart with the category of day name. Show the labels and sort by calendar with Sunday being the starting day, Saturday being the ending day. You can close your day chart and create the time of day chart. For the time of day, we're going to use a pie chart. The category is the time of day variable. Show both percentages and counts. Additionally, you can expand the text for your labels by selecting format. Whoop, excuse me. Let's see where we find the expansion for our labels. There we go, slices. That'll do it. And label character limit, 15 is usually too short. So, about 20 should allow you to see your full labels when you create your graph. One more time, I'm going to save my work.
I'm now going to edit the map symbology. For my points, I'm going to create simple red points. And depending on how many points you have, you may increase the size. Make sure the points are clearly visible without covering one another up. For the patrol sectors, I'm going to use our standard black outline.
Next, I'm going to introduce you to the labeling tool because we want to label our patrol sectors. To label the individual patrol sectors, right-click over your patrol sectors layer and select labeling properties. Where it says feature sector, this is what you should see in the expressions. If you don't see sector, delete out whatever you see in expressions and double-click sector. This is what your expression should look like. Next, select symbol. You're still in the editing area for the label. Make sure you commit your expression. From the symbol tab, scroll down to halo. Create a simple white halo and increase the size of the halo to about five point. Select apply. You'll notice your labels are not visible yet. We have to turn them on just like we would a light switch. Right-click over the labels sector. And excuse me, right-click over the precinct patrol sector. Select label to turn on the labels. Once again, save your work.
You're now ready to create the layout for map one by going to insert new layout and we're going to select the landscape legal 8 and 1/2 by 14 layout. Once again, half of our map is going to be Excuse me, half of our layout is going to be the map. The other half of the layout will be those charts we created. To draw your map in select map frame map one overview. You may have to do this once or twice to get it properly centered and focused. Don't forget to right-click over your control sectors layer and zoom to layer.
On the right-hand side you can start drawing in your maps or excuse me, your charts next to your maps. So, there is my first chart which is count of month. My second chart will be count of day. And my third chart will be the time of day. I'm going to turn on the topographic map. With the topographic map turned on, double-check your focus and insert your map surrounds. This includes your north arrow, scale bar, and your legend. Where you place your legend will depend on what precinct you've been assigned. So, my legend for the 18th precinct will fit nicely in the upper left-hand corner of my map. Don't forget to add background to your legend by right-clicking, going to properties, selecting display. Give it a simple black border with one of the Sahara sand or topaz sand colors. Save your work.
Rename the layout layer as follows. Right-click over layout, select properties, select general, and name it your last name final project map one layout. You're going to have four different layouts, so naming those appropriately will make it easier to find when you need to upload. Additionally, by producing the layouts as we go along, if anything goes wrong, at least you have your map layouts ready for submission to Brightspace.
Your final step is to share, export layout, export as a PDF, select export. And if you want to double-check, you can view the exported file. Once again, save your work. And you can proceed to creating map number two.
