Men's Rally 2025: Pastor Joe Campbell - When I Became A Man

Potters House International57:41

Transcription

Highlight, and I do want to take a moment and, uh, thank everyone who, uh, prayed for my wife and myself. Um, you're probably aware she went to be with the Lord a few days ago, and but we had a conversation a few weeks ago, and she basically said, "Honey, I'm ready to go." And she said, "You know, we've lived a life people dream about." And, uh, she said, "I have no regrets." And she mentioned she'd been in over 30 nations with me.

Uh, but I want to say to you that, uh, that life was possible, of course, because of God, but because of Pastor Mitchell, Pastor Greg Prescuit, the fellowship, which is you. That that would have only been possible and made possible because of men like you, pastors, congregations that you have paid a price [clears throat] for what we believe and in your own way. Different times you've made sacrifices, you've given, you've prayed. Uh, you've made decisions that your family, unsaved family, maybe thought you were crazy or opposed you. Uh, but, uh, speaking for my wife and myself, we really do, uh, thank God for you and your faithfulness to Him.

Would you give God praise? [applause] [applause] [applause] Uh, 1 Corinthians chapter 13, uh, becoming a man. I want you to ask yourself, is that me? Am I becoming a man? Do I even know what a real man is? How do I get there? What does a real man look like? How does he behave? How does he speak? How does he react? One quote says, "Being a male is a matter of birth, but being a man is a matter of choice." >> But a better question I want to ask you to ask yourself, am I a man of God? >> Is that who I am becoming? Am I becoming a man of God? Jesus had 12 men. One of those betrayed Him. But those men changed the world. You and I live in today. But my question is, will you be that man?

I want to minister on when I became a man. These words of Paul, 1 Corinthians 13:11. "When I was a child, I spoke as a child. I understood as a child. I thought as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things." Father, we come by the blood. We come by the power of the Holy Ghost. Revelation of Your word. God, I'm asking You to speak to the heart of these men present, those watching online. God, I'm asking You to raise up another generation, godly, Holy Ghost, courageous men. I'm asking You, those whose hearts are broken, God, You would bind it up. Those who find themselves incarcerated in prison, You'd open the doors. [snorts] Set the captive free. Heal the sick. God, I pray that each man listening, even in these sermons, God, would become an instrument in Your hand for Your glory, even in these last days. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Let's look at a man of God, a biblical man. The Bible says in Genesis, "God created man in His own image. In the image of God, He created him." God said, "I'm going to create with My hands a man, and I want him to look like Me. I want him to act like Me. I want him to represent Me in the earth." So He created you who are here today, men, in God's image. And the first thing Adam did, basically, was work. "Then the Lord God took the man, put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it." So I ask you, sir, are you a worker? And I'm not just talking employment for pay. Some men are great with their business. They're great when they go off to work in the morning. But what about when you come home? Is your garage a mess from hell? Does your car look like the homeless live in it? Honey, the garbage grinder. It hasn't worked since Noah. Dear, can you take out the trash? Maybe I'm tired. No, you're just lazy. I've watched disciples at church for years when it comes to work, especially if it's manual labor. They're like Houdini. They disappear. Or they can talk, but they can't work. Others are always busy when it comes to work, but they're not too busy for pickleball. Had one of the pastors in the valley some time ago. He said, "Yeah, my guys are coming over to Chandler to play your guys' pickleball." I said, "I'm not sure I want you guys over here messing with my guy's pickles." [applause and cheering] He kind of looked at me. Other disciples, if they ever stop to eat, forget it. Work's over. But Adam, I want you to tend and take care of the garden. It's called work. Can your pastor depend on you when it comes time to labor? Jesus. Matthew 9:38. "Pray the Lord of the harvest that He'll send out laborers into the harvest fields." 37 "The harvest is great, but the laborers are few." Ministry is work. Building a church takes a lot of labor. Jesus said, "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. For the night is coming when no one can work." Outreach, evangelism, it's work. Serving people will cost you time and labor. Studying the word of God. Faith will work for God. We heard Pastor Alson, faith works. James 2:17, "Faith without works is dead." Are you a worker?

You see, a man of God is responsible. You can depend on him to finish the job. He keeps his word. He's faithful and true. A man of God is not afraid of sacrifice and pain. He loves good and avoids evil. The very appearance of evil. Sir, is that you? Is that what you're becoming? Is that your ambition? Is that your goal?

In my opinion, one of the great examples of a boy becoming a man, a man of God, was Joseph. In the book of Genesis, there's like 14 long chapters, and it's a lot about Joseph developing from a boy, a teenager, to a man, powerful man, a man of God, a man of dominion, a man who found destiny. It's like God said to this boy, "I have to take you down the road. I have to take you down a path to become a man. Are you willing to walk down that path?" Because it's not pleasant and it can be painful. But in my opinion, it's inescapable and so needed and so necessary if you're ever becoming, if you're ever going to become a real man of God. Joseph, I need to teach you some things. You're full of pride and arrogance. Oh, you have destiny and you have purpose, but I have to prepare you for the place. And you read his story begins with rejections and betrayals from his own family. Brothers sold him as a slave into Egypt, threw him in a pit, some wanted to kill him. Can you imagine the thoughts going through his mind? His father sent him to find the brothers. No doubt he's concerned. "Take some cheese. Take some supplies." And he's on this journey, and he finally finds them. And this is what he runs into: rejection, betrayal. Can you imagine the thoughts, what he's thinking, the emotions? Psalms 105:17-19. "He sent a man before them, Joseph. He was sold as a slave. They heard his feet with feathers. He was laid in irons until the time that his word came to pass. The word of the Lord tested him." Can God test you? Can your pastor put you to the test? Will you pass down the path of the test in the fire to become a real man?

Then Joseph, things seem to get better. He's blessed in Potiphar's house. In my mind, I wonder, was it getting so good? And he was blessed so much that the dream and the destiny begin to fade. I've seen men disciples in the church, God begins to just really bless them. What used to be their first priority was, "I want to go into the ministry. I want to pastor. I want to preach. I want to serve." But now all of a sudden, "I got money. I got a wife. I got kids. I got a house. Maybe someday." Genesis 39:3. "The master saw the Lord was with him, and the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand."

Then comes the test of morals. Potiphar's wife puts her hands on him. Listen to me, sir. Mark it down. When God lays His hand on you, the devil will send a woman to lay her hand on you, >> and it's not your wife. [clears throat] You've heard me tell the story. I'm in Malaysia. I'm 46, 47 years old. And this Chinese lady came in. She was there for a while. I mean, she was beautiful. She looked like a movie star. I remember praying for her one time. I laid hands on her and I felt something move, and it wasn't God. It was my intestines were boiling. I looked at her. I said, "Connie, don't ever leave me alone with that." Later, I came back to Malaysia later, and Nick said, "Remember that that lady that came that..." And every man in the church remembered her. I hadn't seen her in a year. I, I could see her vividly. She had gone to another church, a charismatic church. She had seduced the pastor. They put it in the paper. It's an Islamic country, and they love to put that kind of stuff in the paper. He was dismissed. I actually had a counseling session with him and his wife wasn't in our fellowship or anything. And I remember God speaking to me. Could have been you. What do you do right there, sir?

Bible says Potiphar's wife, she cast longing eyes on Jose, Joseph, and she said, "Lie with me." But he refused. This she spoke to Joseph day by day. And listen to him speak. This is how a man of God speaks. "How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" What do you say right there? Do you flirt, play cute little games with the opposite sex? And then he ran, the path of a man of God.

Then came the lies. She lied, and now Joseph is in prison. So think of this. He has a promise from God about destiny, about purpose. I remember as a new convert on a street corner, my biker friends are there. They're pulling on me, and I said, "No, I'm not going." And I'd witnessed to them, and I said, "I'm going to sell my bike." I turned and walked down the street, and God spoke to me. Tears came. There were no tears when I repented. But that morning, it was, I'd been saved maybe a couple of months. Tears came to my eyes, and God said, "Son, if you'll be faithful, I'll cause you to preach in the nations." At 1971. What about you? Will you be faithful through all the different seasons? Has a promise. He's in a pit now. He's in prison.

My point is, becoming a man is not automatic. It's not immediate. It's becoming. It's realized over time. It's living for God. It's doing right through all the difficult chapters and the unseen and unexpected seasons of life. It's going through the fire with God. Disappointments. It's surviving people. It's even in the good times, the blessed times, the bad times, the hard times. But listen to Joseph at the end of the day. You know the story. Later, there's famine. He interprets the king's dream. Seven years of fruitfulness. Seven years of famine. He's put in charge over all the resources and supplies of Egypt. They store up. The famine hits his homeland. His brothers come. He reveals himself. No matter, no, they're probably terrified. Genesis 50 says, "Do not be afraid, for I am in the place of God. Is that where you are? Is that where you'll be if Jesus tarries? Can God prepare you for the place of God?" >> Amen. >> "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this day to save many people alive." You see, the man of God part, you've got to see the hand of God in all the different chapters of your life. That God can bring you to a place where you can be most effective, place of influence with your family, in the church, in ministry, in life, where you work.

You see, a man of God does what he knows he needs to do when he feels like dying. Is that you? Is that you? Probably one of the most brutal chapters, and you've heard the story. Our daughter Gail died about 16, just turned 16. Tragic accident. I'm in the Philippines. Get home. We get through the funeral. We got conference coming in just a few days. We were hosting a conference in Illinois back in those days. Connie and I are talking. We're hurting. Still haven't even cleaned out her bedroom. I mean, we're talking about conference and said basically these words, "If you heard the podcast, Connie kind of mentioned it in her podcast, but said, 'You know, there's people coming that need us. They need conference. We need to be there.'" So, we decided to have conference. And this conference, this was early, early days. We were pioneering, basically. Might have had, I don't know, we'd been there a few years. We probably had maybe 75 people. I got a word out of Psalms 120. "He that goeth forth weeping bearing precious seed for sowing shall without a doubt come again rejoicing bringing his sheaf or his fruit with him." >> It's given to Connie and I. No pain, no promotion.

Are you becoming a man of God? I want to look secondly at the struggle of young men today. And I, I talked to Pastor Tory quite extensively about this, Chandler. He's actually in the nuts and bolts of discipleship probably more than I am today. But many of them, they have no role model of a man of God, a fatherless generation. Absent fathers are disengaged fathers. They're not present. So, so many young men today, they're attracted to online influences, not realizing what they're seeing is a cropped image or a voice, but they don't see these men's lives. They don't see their marriage, their family. They don't see how these men deal with crisis, who they really are. Too many young men, it's all about growing a beard, getting a tattoo, or working out. So, their image of a man of God is grow some hair, get some ink, pump some iron. Is that you?

Added to that, the whole feminine agenda. It's like masculinity's become toxic in many circles. Anything aggressive is bad. Anything masculine. And so, no risk-taking. And there's this confusion about identity. A lot of men, they've been pushed. Anything masculine is to be rejected. They fear being labeled, "I'm insensitive." If I'm masculine, I'm harmful. I have to apologize for becoming a being a man. Let me say something. God took Eve out of the man. >> The transgenders keep trying to put her back in. [applause] It's not working. But too many times it's created these passive males. They fear any failure. Listen, if you do anything for God, there's going to be some failures and criticism. [clears throat] I have 30-year-old teenagers in my church. Some of them 40, some of them maybe even 70, I don't know. But social media has compounded this. It's all about social approval, >> followers, likes. It's like you're looking for a virtual validation, craving to be accepted by people that don't even know you, and you don't know them. "I'm going to unfriend you. I don't even know you." I've never seen you. Good. See you later, whoever you are. But in the real world, they run from purpose. So busy with things that mean nothing to God and nothing to eternity. Oh, they tell you you can be anything, but do they tell you how? Is there any direction? Real examples went again. I'm, I'm quoting Pastor Tory now, so if you get mad, get mad at him. Created males that fear responsibility, avoid commitment. And I'm saying this for myself, too many. You're so soft. >> Sheesh. They're emotionally fragile. You can have tattoos on your ears, but you're soft. [applause]

Pastor Tori and Pastor Martinez tell the story about me. Tori's been saved around 20 years. He got saved on Sunday. On Monday, we're on the basketball court. I would have been maybe 50. I'm 80-something. No, I'd have been 60 then, I guess. And, uh, you know, he saw me the night before I was preaching. So, we're on the basketball court at the YMCA. I can tell, I can look at him, and you know, I played basketball with a lot of black brothers, and I'm always, and I look and I say, "This guy's got some." So, I choose him on my team. The ball goes out of bounds. He doesn't dive for it. "Tori, what's wrong with you?" He went over to James. He said, "Is that the old white man that was preaching last night?" James says, "That, that's him. He's different out here." I have guys all over the fellowship come up to me. I don't even, hard, some of them don't even know, "Pastor, my ribs still hurt." I say, "Be quiet, you. What's wrong with you? Get out of here." They would rather escape than be challenged. Crave approval. Have a hard time coping in the real world.

But listen to the Apostle Paul. When he talks about becoming a man, it was all about the internal, not the external. Said I had to change inside. "When I was a child, I spoke as a child." Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh. >> "I understood as a child. I thought as a child." To become a man, I had to put away those things. [sighs] Had to cast them out. I had to confront and deal with internal issues, how I thought, how I perceived life, how I come to conclusions, how I processed what I was going through and what was happening. That had to change my experiences. What people are saying, what I'm going through right now, I have to deal with it as a man. How do you deal with disappointment, injustice, life? Do you have wisdom? Wisdom is about, "Where is this going? Who is, if I do this? Who is it affecting? What's going to be the fallout? The consequences?" Emotions are all about now. I can't just react like a child and go all emotional. My observation today, too many men allow their emotions to do their thinking. >> Listen, your emotions have no intellect. >> Your emotions are stupid. They're designed to support your mind, >> not rule over it. >> Do you pout? Sulk? Put off the vibes? Do you quit? Every time there's a hurdle, every time there's a conflict, every time there's a struggle, you just quit. I'll say it again. There's nothing more ignorant than your emotions. Say amen. >> Paul said, "I have to put it away." God's not putting it away. And so do you. Do you always have an excuse? Are you always blaming other people? "Oh, you're the reason I'm..." And then you fill it in. "You don't understand me. You don't care about me. You don't love me." Victims never grow up. >> If you play the victim card, you'll never become a man of God. >> "Everyone's out to get me." No. Most people don't have time to get you. They're busy with their own life. Let me ask you, sir, are you addicted to defending and always excusing what you need to confront >> and cast out? >> You will never change what you refuse to confront.

Are you becoming a real man of God? It's not accidental. It's not automatic. You can be here every year at the men's rally, but it doesn't guarantee that you're becoming a man of God. Paul said, "When I thought as a child, understood as a child, I would add and reacted emotionally as a child." When I became a man, I had to deal with those things. Are you dealing with things?

I want to close. Discipleship is designed to make and mold you into a man of God. One side of that is an impartation. It's where your pastor, leaders, men in the church, staff perhaps, they want to impart to you vision, purpose, hope, destiny, ministry. That's one side of the equation. Pastor, do you see potential in your men that they don't see in themselves? And you communicate that with your words, how you treat them, how you speak to them, in your association with them. It's David with his mighty men of valor. Here these men come. They're in debt. They're distressed. They're discontented. But he imparted something in them until they become this powerful force for God in Israel. Pastor Mitchell saw things in me I never saw in myself. Pastor, is that you? You see your men. What do you see?

The other side of the discipleship equation is helping you see what's living in you that needs to change or come out. Your attitude. All of life follows attitude. Someone said your anger, family curses, generational curses, mindsets you've picked up from the streets or your family or social media. Well, Campbell, you've probably heard Campbell 3366. I forget. Campbell will say Campbell 1212. Can anybody talk to you when you're locked in on crazy? That come from dealing with men that were locked in on crazy that I'm trying to talk to. Can your pastor get real with you? How you treat your wife? How you handle and deal with money, your kids, your discipline, your character, how do you react? How do you react to correction? You've >> heard me say, Pastor Mitchell quoted me. Campbell says, "I can never disciple you if you won't allow me to correct you. You just run your mouth." Can your pastor say, "Stop running your mouth. >> You got diarrhea of the mouth. Stop that." Bob Alvarez gave me a plaque years ago. Somebody said to him, I get, I don't know. Uh, you know, in Chandler, uh, at the Bible conference, all the former door directors, they have a breakfast together, and all of them at that breakfast, uh, it's like they all reminisce how I abused them. Stacy Dillard tells the disciples, "Day, you would have never survived, Pastor Campbell, when I was in the church." And I can't remember any of these statements they make about me. Uh, they call it a discipleship breakfast. I call it a self-pity party. >> [applause] >> Can anybody deal with you about issues that if you don't correct it or confront it today, the devil will play it down the road to your demise? Are you becoming a real man of God? You're going to have to deal with issues. We all carry them. We all bring baggage into the kingdom. Some more than others, but we all carry it.

I close. My wife passed November the 10th, 3:30 in the afternoon. She made a statement a few months before that. She said, "Honey, when I go, I want you holding my hand." So, I was there holding her hand. The next morning was Veterans Day, and I was at prayer, my usual time. I'm there at church at prayer Tuesday morning. And, uh, a lot of men were there that morning 'cause it was a holiday. And Pastor Rubianis came to me and he said, "Pastor," said, "These, these men, she, they're all, they're amazed that you're here." I remember saying to him, "Why wouldn't I be here?" >> I mean, my wife passed yesterday, so I'm going to quit talking to God. I'm going to quit doing what I did for decades. I didn't even think about it. I got up that morning. I, I wake up early and went to prayer.

I >> ask you to bow your head with me. Come to this men's rally. You're here this morning. You're not saved. You're not born again. You're not right with God. No doubt there's numbers. You're here. God brought you here. And something in you, you wanted to be here, but you know you're not right. There's secret sin. You're concerned. If I died today, I probably wouldn't go to heaven. Secret sin. Maybe you've never been saved. Or maybe you're backslidden. But there's only one cure for the human heart and sin, and that's repentance. And it's so powerful. I prayed a prayer like in 1971 in February. I had no clue. Oh, I, I, I knew I was, nobody had to tell me I was a sinner. I was crazy with sin. I was insane with sin. But I prayed a prayer that you can pray. And not only did Jesus forgive me, which was such a wonderful thing, but He gave me a life. God and I, our marriage was all but over. It was finished. We'd separated numerous times. God put our marriage back together. Gave us a life. Like she said, "Honey, people dream about the life we've lived." I never once ever remember thinking about being a preacher or pastor till I got saved. What does God have for you? But it lives behind repentance. Lives behind the altar. God, I need to get my heart right. I wonder how many men here this morning you'd say, "Pastor Campbell, that's me you're talking to right now. I need to get my heart right with God. I need to repent. I need to come clean. I need Jesus." You just lift your hand right now. Just lift it up. Lift it up. Lift it up. I see this hand. I see that hand. How many more? Others. That's me. I see hands here. Others. Others. Yes. I see on my right over here. You lifting your hand. Who else? Yes, I see your hand. Thank you, young man. I see another man back there. God bless you. [music] Who else? I'm not going to leave this building the same way I came. Who else? Others? You just lift your hand. Yes. God bless you. Thank you. Yes. God bless you. Yes. In the back, back there. God's speaking to you. You're backsliding. Maybe you once knew God, but you've drifted. You'd lift up your hand. I want to come home. [music] I'm the prodigal. I want to come home. Here's my hand. Who else? Just lift it up. Yes. God bless you. Anyone [music] else? Anyone? I want all of those. You lifted your hand. Would you lift it up and hold it? Just lift it again and hold it. You lifted your hand. Lift your hands up. And all of you with your hands lifted, would you look at me? Would you look at me right now? You sincere with God. Sincere with God. Over here. Sincere with God. Up here. Over here. Cross. I want all of you with your hands lifted. I want you to stand and come. Someone's going to pray with you. Would you come right now [music] in the back? Over there. Over here. Over here. Would you come? Someone's going to pray with you. Would you come? God's speaking to you. Listen, secret sin will eat you up. It won't always be secret. It'll be exposed. And that can be painful. Anyone else you want to join these? It's these are coming. Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for your honesty. God's going to help you.

One of the things that so amazed me was what God had that I didn't even know existed for Connie and I. Heard sermons this morning. Pastor Alson, faith, faith, radical faith for the miraculous. Pastor Ruby spoke about Jesus, the meekness of Jesus, the courageous Jesus, being a courageous man. I spoke very simply about becoming a man of God. I'm going to ask you to stand with me all over this building, front to back, you would stand. I want to open these altars. You want to come and find a place to pray. Are you becoming a man of God? >> Doesn't happen in a week. Doesn't happen in a year. Becoming from glory to glory. He's changing me into His likeness is in me. Let's lay hold of God. If you're at your seat, you may be seated. [cough] Oh God, [snorts] touch these men by the Holy Ghost, I pray. God, break curses from their life. Oh God, make Yourself real. Lord, make Yourself real. I pray. >> God, help them to see who they can become. God, open the curtains of heaven. Oh, ash. Oh, my Lord and my God. Oh, touch these men. I pray. Touch these churches, God, I pray. Raise up workers and laborers. Oh, ash. Oh God, I need You. I need You, my Lord and my God. I need You. Oh, I need You, my Lord. My God, I need You. Oh, ash, and renew a right spirit within me. Would you stand and sing it with me? [music] "Create in me a clean heart, oh God, >> and renew a right spirit [singing] within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. [music] Restore unto me the >> joy of Thy salvation and renew." [singing] >> Let's give Him praise. Oh, mama mash. [applause] [cheering] Oh, grandma mama shand. [applause] Oh, m shama. [applause] [applause] Oh, sh. [applause] [applause] God, I praise You, Lord, in this place, I praise You. Oh God, I praise You, my Lord, I praise You. [applause] >> [applause] >> Oh, [applause] my Lord and my God. I praise You. I worship You. My Lord, my God, I thank You for these men. [applause] "When I found you," says the Lord, "I found you exhausted and depleted because of sin and selfishness. I found you broken. I found you on the floor and in a pit, and I raised you up. And now that I have GIVEN YOU STRENGTH, NOW THAT I'VE given you purpose, talent, ability, and resurrected you, WILL YOU EXHAUST YOURSELF FOR ME, SAYS THE LORD? When will you deplete your strength for me? You want strength? Be my hands. You want my power? Then come to the end of your power. Remember that I have declared to you, he that builds a house labors in vain unless I build the house. All your LABOR AND ALL YOUR WORK THAT IS OUTSIDE OF ME, IT WILL COME TO AN END. BUT WHAT YOU DO FOR me has EVERLASTING CONSEQUENCE. EXHAUST YOURSELF FOR ME, SAYS THE LORD, and in that you will find my strength." >> Hallelujah. [applause] >> [applause] [applause] >> Hallelujah Jesus.

I want to, uh, I want to do one more thing. I want to give you a challenge. And will you allow your pastor to speak to you about sometimes sensitive issues, critical issues? I'm not talking about manipulation. I'm not talking about micromanaging. But I'm asking you simply, will you allow your pastor to talk to you about things perhaps you don't even see? It's so normal, been with you so long, but it's detrimental to your destiny. It's going to catch you somewhere. It could be an attitude. It could be an emotion. Could be how you react. Be how you treat your wife, be how you view people, money, your lack of discipline. It, it has a whole God. But can your pastor really talk to you without you getting all emotional, playing the victim card, go home and cry to your wife? I've dealt with guys before and came home and, thank God, some wife said, "Hey, be a man. [clears throat] >> What are you doing? Stop that." But others, they go home and and and this vomiting on their spouse, and then she's home because that's what it takes. Many times, Pastor Mitchell, few times, I mean, I was a grown man. [clears throat] I'm way down the road one time, and he just, I won't tell you what he said. Too embarrassing. [laughter] But, uh, I took it and I went away. I said, "You know, he's right. He's right." If that's you, nobody can do this for you. Nobody can make this decision but you. And I don't want you to take this lightly, but today you're going to go on record before God that I'm going to allow my pastor when he sees something or he feels God is nudging him to speak to me about something that's that's perhaps sensitive, something you don't want to see, you don't want to talk about, you don't want to deal with, but you're going to say, "I'm going to go on record before God, give my pastor the liberty because that's that's a critical aspect of discipleship." But that's you this morning. We're crowded in here. I'd have you all come to the altar, but that's you. I want you to raise your hand and hold it. Between you and God, your pastor, I want you to lift your hand and hold it. I'm going to give my pastor that liberty and that trust to speak to me. I want you to pray with me.
