Children's stories. The pirate princess in the palace of Lisbon where marble halls echo with expected rules. Princess Marina spent every morning as usual, watching the world she wasn't allowed to join. [music] A large three-masted galleon. With Dutch flags. Likely heading east towards Madeira. Your Majesty, why aren't you dressed yet? Your father, the king, expects you at the naval council meeting. He allows me to attend to observe. Silence. She was very clear about the part about silence. Beatrice, do you know what is more useless than a ship without a rudder? A princess without a voice. [music] Princess, please. Don't mention your books again in front of the admirals. The king's admirals are debating the problem that has plagued Portugal's waters for months. A mysterious pirate ship that steals merchant ships but never harms a single sailor. >> [music] >> Your Majesty. The Red Serpent attacked again last week. They took the spice cargo but strangely. They left the crew safe and with enough supplies to reach port. [music] A pirate with principles. So busy. We believe their captain is a woman. The crew reported the name Captain Catalina. A woman commands the fastest ship in these waters. That's amazing. Marina, what is that? But father, it's amazing. How did she maneuver that three-masted galleon? I saw it heading in the same direction this morning. What is her strategy? Your Majesty. Piracy is not a subject for a princess. Neither is navigation, but I am better at reading about currents than you are. Marina, that's enough for my chamber today. King Alphonso loves his daughter dearly. So disappointing him is the hardest part of being king. You have your mother's spirit. I fear that in her and I fear that in you. Mother sailed with you before I was born. You told me. >> And she left the sea when you arrived. That is what leadership demands. A sacrifice. But what if I don't want to lead from the throne? What if I want to lead from a ship? What if true love is letting someone be true to themselves? We've discussed this. You are promised to Prince Eduardo. In two months, you will marry and unite our kingdoms. To a man I have only met once, father, who thinks books are just decorations. Marina, I want you to be safe. If so, you don't need me because I am not for safety. Father, I'm sorry if I'm a disappointment to you. But I am destined for the sea, not for a Prince Eduardo. There are decisions made by the heart before the mind can catch up. Your Majesty. What are you doing? Something that might be very brave or very foolish. I will know when it's done. Are you running away? No. I am going. There's a difference. The Red Serpent will dock at the Port tonight for supplies. I heard the crew's conversation at the Port. You went to the Port. Do you think I just walked in the garden all afternoon? Your father will send the entire navy after you. If so, it's better to make the chase worthwhile. Beatrice, I've spent years studying sailing from books. If Captain Catalina can command respect in these seas, I need to learn how. But she is a pirate. She is a woman who chose her own path. Tell my father. Tell him I will make him proud, not just in the way he expects. Marina, how will you find their ship? I am a princess who knows every docked ship. Don't I? I'm fine. And so Princess Marina traded her crown for a question. Not who she was born as, but who she would choose to be. The Red Serpent is smaller than the large three-masted ship. But its movement is twice as beautiful. And its captain is capable of seeing through disguises, even those of royalty. Captain Catalina, I want to join your crew. Really? And why do you think I need a man? Don't I? But you are available when you hear my offer. You are the daughter of royalty. I can see it in your posture. Like the port. Princess. Honestly, I stand like this because I know the difference between a brigantine and a brig. I know how to calculate latitude using the stars and I know every current in the Mediterranean. >> Book learning. You can test me if you wish. Why does the princess want to sail with pirates? Because you are the only woman I know who commands her own destiny. Teach me to do the same. We fight smugglers and traffickers. No lives are taken. None are left behind. Then you are not the feared council. You are what these seas need. Hm. One month. If you can't keep up, I'll drop you at the port. Agreed? Okay, Captain. [music] Okay, Marco. Show the new recruit the extra hammock. Find her some practical clothes. Welcome, Princess. I'm Marco. Just Marina. If I'm going to be your crewmate, I'm one of you. [music] Marina got used to ship life like a dolphin in the waves. What she learned from books, her hands now knew. Princess, be careful there. That's a double reef knot, Rafael. The same knot that was tied 100 times in my room. Her balance is better than yours, Rafael. Yes, I know. But books don't teach balance, do they? But climbing out of the palace window at midnight. Yes. [laughter] >> You are full of surprises. You are too, you know every constellation but you don't say how you learned. My father was a navigator in the Royal Navy. When I was two years old. A storm took him. Or so they say. Is that why you are on a pirate ship? The navy doesn't care about a navigator's family. They left us with nothing. Catalina found me at the port. She taught me everything. She gave me a home. You are the best sailor I've ever met. You've only known me for two weeks. There are things you just know. Marco, Marina, we need the route to the Azores. Are we ready, Princess? Yes. Together. When the storm hit in their third week at sea, it was fast and violent. It swallowed the stars and turned the rigging into a ferocious monster. We're losing our direction. I can't see the captain. Marina, without them, we are blind. We don't need them. Listen, do you hear that? What is it? Other seas to the left. They nest on the rocks every night. We are close to the coast. We are so close, Rafael. Oh, we're going to crash into this fog. Marco, do you remember your story about dolphins using echo? The ship's bell. Captain, ring the ship's bell continuously. They will know our position. Trust her. Ring it. Hi. Going >> everything stopped breathing and waited. full of tension and the echo of the ship's bell returned with different [music] tones from different directions. There, there's the echo. The slow one is the open passage. Turn right away from the fast echo. The fast one is a cliff. Get away from there. Turn hard, follow their hearing. They did it together, it's unbelievable, like two halves of a single compass, you saved this ship and everyone on it, both of you. I just remembered what she told me about dolphins, how they travel in the dark, maybe it will work. I mean, the timing was perfect, it's really her, so thank you Marina, you both think like true sailors, fast, smart, and brave. Excellent. A full moon cycle passed, and Princess Marina not only became part of ship life like a thread in a sail, but she also found the person she didn't know she was looking for, someone who sees the whole. This is my favorite. Andromeda. Marco, the month ends tomorrow. I know the captain promised to return you if you wished. Do you want me to leave? What I want doesn't matter. You are a princess. I am nothing. You are a child who lost a father but not her goodness. You taught me that the stars are not just for direction but for dreams. Marina, there's a chosen group name for you, Marina. Oh, really? The princess of the sea who sails as if born with salt in her veins. The princess of the sea. The princess of the sea. I am deeply honored, but my month is ending and you haven't sent me away yet. I am grateful. Yes. So, do you want to go back? I have to. Not for long. But to face my father, to prove that what I learned here is important, that I can be a princess and a sailor. I understand. Your place is where I choose, and I choose to return to you on this ship, to this life. Will you really come back? Promise, six months. And when you return, I will encourage my father to give me a royal ship with a female captain. Me, and I will guard these seas. And when I return, I want you by my side. As my navigator, my partner, my >> The what? >> The true north of my heart. >> I will wait for you. I will count every star until you return, and I will sail through any storm to get back to you. [music] I'm crying. You really thought about this. I had a lot of time on the Red Serpent, Captain. You will always be welcome. Princess of the sea. The princess of the sea. The princess of the sea, sea. Will you really come back, Princess? [music] I will return. Every woman should know that you can find your way home. For me, it is the sea. And you. And so, Marina learned that princesses can be pirates and pirates can be family. Courage is knowing how to sail towards your dreams even when the waters are unknown. The truest treasure is the freedom to write your own story on the waves and the love of someone who wants to be part of every chapter.
