There is a question that many people ponder: how does one know whether a relationship is right for them or not? Is there a specific sign or revelation? Allah Taala has mentioned that you won't receive a clear revelation saying, "Yes, marry so and so." Such revelations are rare. The reality is that we should pray for Istikharah, which means asking Allah to guide us.
When we pray for Istikharah, we essentially ask Allah to make the relationship easy for us if it is better for our lives. Conversely, if the relationship is not good for us, we ask Him to put a stop to it. This is the essence of Istikharah: seeking help from Allah. If it is His will, things will improve; if not, we should accept that and move on.
After praying, if your heart feels satisfied and inclined towards moving forward with the relationship, then you may consider continuing. It is important to reflect on your spiritual state as well as the spiritual state of the person you are considering for the relationship. Are they part of your Jamaat?
It is not sufficient to focus solely on the good qualities of the other person; it’s crucial to evaluate our own strengths and weaknesses as well. Perfection is unattainable, and everyone has shortcomings. Therefore, pray for guidance, and if you feel a sense of peace and satisfaction, then proceed. This feeling of contentment after prayer is the only true criterion to rely upon.
In conclusion, we should continually seek Allah’s guidance and be conscious of our own spiritual conditions as we navigate relationships. Jazakallah.
