How did the stock market start? So, we understood what a stock market is, but you might be asking, "How did it start? And what is Wall Street?" Let's start for a moment with what Wall Street is, even before we discuss how it all started. Wall Street is the name of the largest stock exchange in the world, which actually consists of two different exchanges. One exchange is called the New York Stock Exchange, and the second exchange is called Nasdaq. When we buy and sell stocks, we don't always even know which exchange we're buying in, and to tell the truth, it doesn't really matter.
Let's start with the New York Stock Exchange. The New York Stock Exchange actually came into our world in 1792 when 24 stockbrokers, whom we call stock brokers, met under the Buttonwood tree. There, they exchanged papers and costs for a company that later became the New York Stock Exchange as we know it today, the NYSE. We are talking about thousands of companies that came to this stock exchange to sell the same shares in the pizza that we saw in the previous chapter.
