Turmeric is credited with many properties: a source of antioxidants, a source of vitamins A, B, C, and various minerals. It improves blood vessels and the functioning of the cardiovascular system, reduces cholesterol, and prevents type 2 diabetes. But few people say that turmeric can slow down aging. Let's talk about this.
Many patients come to me, and some of them, with stagnation and accumulation of mucus, complain that, despite following a diet, being active, and playing sports, nothing changes: they do not lose weight and do not become energetic. What is wrong with me? Stagnation and accumulation of mucus impair the functioning of internal self-regulation mechanisms. Let's take a closer look.
What mechanisms are at work here in our cells? Every cell has intracellular energy sensors that stop working when mucus accumulates. And mucus stagnates in our body. Once they stop working, the cells no longer experience an energy deficit. Why is it so important for cells to experience an energy deficit? Because it is the lack of cell energy that triggers an intracellular enzyme, which is also found in all cells, called adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase. Let's call it AMPK. This enzyme, when activated, then triggers the process of autophagy.
The process of autophagy is the process of self-digestion of harmful substances, old cellular components, toxins, bacteria, viruses, and everything that our body does not need. Activation of AMPK and the supply of autophagy blocks the work of the mTOR complex. But blocking mTOR slows down aging.
From the point of view of Tibetan medicine, turmeric has warm and cleansing properties. It warms and cleanses our body of mucus, blood, and lymph; this is its effect on our body, and it triggers all these mechanisms and processes that further slow down our aging.
How to take turmeric? As I remember, my grandfather took turmeric every day – a heaping teaspoon of turmeric powder, added a pinch of black pepper, poured warm water, and stirred it all once or twice a day. He always said: “Turmeric definitely reduces the pain in my joints, ligaments, and muscles.” I also try to take turmeric, but I don't always succeed. I use it more as a spice. I can put turmeric in rice, with black pepper, meat, mix it, and eat it.
Or I actively use curry powder; there is a lot of turmeric, black pepper, and so on. But the easiest way to take turmeric is in the form of dietary supplements called curcumin. If you buy such supplements, then take them from a thousand to five hundred milligrams per day. And don’t forget to add a dietary supplement called piperine. Curcumin is turmeric; piperine is black pepper. Why? Because curcumin is very poorly absorbed by our body. If you take turmeric and curcumin without black pepper, everything will come out of your body; nothing will be retained, or little will be retained, and the concentration of curcumin in the blood will not increase, and the effect will not appear.
But there are two proven contraindications. First, you should not use turmeric if you have a stomach ulcer. Second, turmeric should not be consumed when you are taking a blood thinner.
I am sure that you are now asking where to get turmeric from and what quality is better, and so on. But I can’t say anything about quality, but I can tell you how I do it. I order turmeric powder from India; it is considered one of the best. Sometimes I buy dietary supplements in pharmacies, like curcumin and piperine. It happens that they are already combined in capsules, and then I take them; I take about five hundred milligrams daily.
To summarize, I want to say that it is important for our body not only to include some kind of superfood in our diet but also to monitor the general state of our body, the balance of wind, bile, and mucus. If there is stagnation of mucus, take all measures to remove this stagnation of mucus. If you do well, and you supplement with curcumin, plus you eat right, do physical activity, get enough sleep, drink water, and try to minimize your stress, of course, you will live a long time and will not get sick.
