Les 3 plus horribles complots de la CIA

Well, one of the four principal functions of the CIA is to gather intelligence and disseminate propaganda to influence people's minds. This is a major function of the CIA.

[Musique]

In 1995, before the US Presidential Commission, two women testified to being drugged, electrocuted, and tortured by representatives of the American state. Eleven years later, in 2006, American soldiers claimed to have Osama bin Laden in their sights, but were forbidden to fire. And another eleven years later, in 2017, declassified documents proved that President Kennedy's assassin met with government members just before the murder. A priori, nothing unites these conspiracies, and yet three letters are on everyone's lips: CIA, CIA, CIA, CIA, CIA, CIA.

For nearly 70 years, an intelligence agency has operated above the law, implicated in assassinations of heads of state under false flags, supplying drug cartels and terrorist networks, and engaging in mind control projects. The CIA often acts in an obscure and brutal manner against its adversaries. We no longer even count the number of lives broken, countries ruined, and truths buried by the CIA. But for how much longer?

In 2007, after years of pressure from victim advocacy groups and even former agents, the agency was finally forced to release its "family jewels"—a compilation of over 50,000 documents containing highly embarrassing archives. But what is hidden behind these "family jewels," and why did their discovery cause such a stir not only in the United States but worldwide? Today, we delve into the CIA's worst files, conspiracies that changed the destinies of thousands of people and entire countries. You will discover why these scandals continue to influence the world and what they reveal about the CIA's hidden power. To tell this story, let's go back to its origins. The story of the CIA begins here.

We are in Germany, late April 1945. The country is ravaged by war. Hitler is in his bunker, about to end his days, and the intensive bombings send a single message to the German high command: it's over, we've lost. A hundred kilometers from Berlin, soldiers advance through the vast German forests. Among them is Allen Dulles. Unlike the other soldiers, he is not part of an official army corps; he is a secret agent working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). But if Allen is in Germany, it is not to kill Nazis; on the contrary, it is to save some. Allen is not a traitor; his mission is to save certain Nazis. In fact, he must negotiate information with General Carl Wolf, head of the SS. Although Germany is on the verge of capitulation, he is not very serene, because if he fails in his mission, it is the security of the entire America that he puts at stake. But what exactly must he negotiate? To understand, we must go back a few months.

Allen is informed that Germany possesses extraordinary experimental weapons: supersonic bombs capable of exceeding 6000 km/h in the air. He also learns that only General Wolf knows the location of the research centers. The American command gives him a very clear mission: recover these weapons and recruit the scientists who produced them. The problem is that Allen is not the only one in the game, as the Russians are also searching for these technologies. If they fall into communist hands, his country risks having missiles launched at it from the other side of the Atlantic without knowing how to manufacture them. He starts with a small advantage: he knows that General Wolf hates communists as much as he does. Moreover, Allen is used to dealing with criminals; it was he who negotiated with the Mafia boss, Lucky Luciano, to facilitate the American landing in Sicily in 1943. General Wolf and Allen meet, and the negotiations go much better than expected. In exchange for the safety of Wolf, his friends, and his family, the head of the SS agrees to give absolutely all the information required by the OSS. Mission accomplished. Allen recovers the list of all the greatest scientists of the Third Reich and their locations. Back in the United States, he, like all OSS agents, is widely thanked and decorated by the president. At that time, Allen Dulles is a war hero. Yet he will later distinguish himself in the worst possible way.

But here we are at the end of 1945. The war is officially over, and for the OSS, this means the end of the adventure. Yes, the OSS was created for war and only for war. The agency was therefore dismantled in 1945. But in 1947, a new war begins—a Cold War, certainly without direct confrontation between the two powers, but one that requires impeccable foreign intelligence. At this point, the president calls back the team that formed the OSS and explains to them, roughly speaking, that they are going to return to service, but this time the bad guys are the communists. And they will no longer be called the OSS; they will be called the CIA: Central Intelligence Agency.

[Musique]

Okay, but what exactly do they do? Officially, the CIA is an intelligence agency serving to strengthen American influence in the world. Said like that, it sounds a little innocuous, but in truth, the CIA is an autonomous psychological and paramilitary warfare program. It is entirely managed by former OSS agents—secret agents who progressed through the worst and most extreme theaters of operation of their time. So when they return to service, they retain exactly the same methods they learned during the Second World War: they have absolutely no regard for prisoners or human rights. And the worst part is that at first, the American government said, "Yes, yes, go ahead, guys, you're doing great." The problem is that they start to lose their minds. Indeed, no legal framework defines the actions of the CIA. As long as the United States extends its influence over the world, they have carte blanche. Listen to what Allen Dulles, our former negotiator with the Nazis, but who has since received a small promotion—he has become director of the CIA—declares: "We can use any means to achieve our objectives; we are not subject to common laws. Political assassination is part of our clandestine arsenal of actions." It's hard to be clearer. But throughout the video, you will see the extremely serious consequences of letting overtrained soldiers run wild.

Okay, I told you that the CIA had total carte blanche. That's not entirely true. In reality, they have only one prohibition: do not touch the United States. The CIA has a formal prohibition against acting on American territory, as that is the FBI's job. But you will see that even that, they don't really care about. Before we look at the worst CIA conspiracy, a quick point on its scale. The CIA is a gigantic organization, a many-headed hydra that can be defined by three words. The first is power. It has a colossal budget of $60.2 billion in 2019 and 23,000 spies and analysts spread across the globe. It also has unlimited access to the NSA's eavesdropping—the world's largest security agency—and to Echelon, a sprawling electronic surveillance network considered the best in the world. The CIA is a spiderweb with a foot in almost every network of power. This power gives it almost absolute autonomy in choosing its missions. The CIA therefore has to answer to no one, except perhaps the President of the United States, but even that, it manages to circumvent. We'll see that later.

The second word that defines it is invulnerable. Since it has no legal framework to operate under, all means are good to achieve its ends. The abuses we are going to discover transgress hundreds of laws, but despite their crimes, the CIA is not only protected but also maintains a good image. And that's perhaps the most disturbing thing. Indeed, if the CIA is invulnerable, it is because it protects its public image. In 1949, that good old Allen launches Project Mockingbird. Mockingbird is a large program to infiltrate all the major American and European media to influence the press to always praise the merits of the CIA. As part of Mockingbird, the CIA takes the opportunity to spread a word you should know: "conspiracy theorist," which will always be thrown in the face of anyone who denounces the CIA's actions. Yes, it's twisted, but it's also very clever, because the agency kills two birds with one stone. On the one hand, it discredits its detractors, and on the other, it always places itself on the side of the good guys. CIA agents are not trained like local police officers; they are trained in practices forbidden even during war: abominable torture, arbitrary kidnappings, chemical testing on civilian guinea pigs. The CIA does not count the number of deaths or the suffering it inflicts to succeed in its missions. Created by the greatest secret agents of the Second World War and maintained by the brightest elements of the army and even future presidents, the CIA is what we can call a state within a state—a sprawling and powerful entity that acts according to its own interests.

In 2008, during a major investigative commission, the US Congress obtained confessions on the modus operandi of a CIA arrest. You are going to hear what a man who is arrested by the CIA's men in black undergoes.

[Musique]

Four masked men put the suspect in a trunk before undressing him. The naked man is transported in a plane and then in a boat, sometimes for more than a week. He is then thrown into a 4m² cell with a mattress on the floor and a bucket for his needs. His only meal of the day is a bowl of rice. The hardest part is sensory deprivation. The suspect is only illuminated by a white bulb lit 24/7. The only air he breathes comes from a ventilation system set either very hot or very cold. But the worst is the noise. Loudspeakers are placed in the cells. The usual noise is a low hum, but sometimes it becomes much louder, with a deafening sound of an aircraft engine that is blasted into each cell. When they target someone for interrogation, they blast rock, rap, and distorted choral verses into his cell. Some even testify to hearing deafening laughter or screams of women and children. And all this for about four months. After these four months, many detainees make round trips to psychiatric hospitals for those who come out alive.

Now that you have a rough idea of what the CIA is, we can move on to the first conspiracy. And for that, direction the Middle East.

[Musique]

Bin Laden is considered today the greatest terrorist of the century. At the head of Al-Qaeda, he orchestrated the September 11 attacks in New York, killing more than 3,000 people. Yet, when we look more closely at his history, several things are wrong. How did he obtain so many weapons? Why wasn't he killed sooner? The Bin Laden affair hides more than dubious implications of the CIA. But first, a little context. In 1979, in the Middle East, for more than 30 years, the Americans and the British imposed a veritable dictatorship over the control of oil to guarantee advantageous trade agreements. They did not hesitate to overthrow all Arab leaders who did not submit. In 1952, this will be the case of Mossadegh, the Iranian Prime Minister. Mossadegh read the contracts with the Americans and the British and said, "Okay, the oil wells you built are on our land, so they belong to us." The Americans responded, "Pardon, we didn't hear you correctly." Mossadegh was courageous, so he repeated himself and added, "Anyway, if you're not happy, you can leave." The Americans said, "Okay, very well. We're leaving." The following year, the CIA signed a treaty with the Shah to overthrow Mossadegh. The contract was simple: the Americans would regain control of the oil wells and would commit to providing millions of dollars' worth of weapons to overthrow Mossadegh. And what do you think happened? A few months later, Mossadegh was overthrown, the Shah regained power, and the Americans got their oil wells. On paper, when you have the power and the money, it's easy to interfere and overthrow legitimate rulers. But in the eyes of the world, destabilizing a country just to obtain more oil is not very well seen. So to morally justify the US presence in the Middle East, the CIA thought about a strategy. The pretext was readily available. We are in the midst of the Cold War; we are fighting against the communists. But we will also provide weapons to those who are against the communists but who will not bother us too much about oil. In 1979, an opportunity presented itself because the USSR invaded Afghanistan. Why is this a golden opportunity? Because the United States had just lost Vietnam—they had just lost to a very small country because of Russian weaponry. So for them, it was the perfect way to get revenge, to supply the enemies of the USSR in Afghanistan. So the CIA immediately launched a large project to finance and arm the mujahideen—basically, Islamist fighters. In 1984, nearly $600 million worth of weapons arrived in Afghanistan. Today, that would correspond to four times more; we would be around $2 billion or $3 billion. And wait, that's not all, because alongside this, the Saudis are very happy to see their American allies globally financing Islam, so they will double the sum. So now we have more than $1.2 billion in weapons arriving in Afghanistan. And to be able to distribute them properly, intermediaries are needed. And this is where the CIA comes into play.

The CIA has contacts with a certain Osama bin Laden. Why him and not someone else? On the one hand, Osama is Saudi, the son of Mohammed bin Laden, the founder of the Saudi Binladin multinational. On the other hand, the CIA liked him. Osama was rich, well-educated, and above all, he hated communists. Okay, he's an Islamist integrist, but as long as he kills communists, the CIA doesn't care. So the CIA sent him weapons, the Saudis sent him weapons, and quickly, Osama became the richest but also the best-armed man in all of Afghanistan. In all Muslim countries, he opened recruitment offices, branches of Al-Qaeda, his new terrorist group. And the worst thing is that at that time, the CIA encouraged him; it even helped him open an office in Hariz, in the United States, to recruit some American Muslims in case he wanted to go kill some Russians. But from the 1990s onwards, the CIA's Muslim pawn turned against them. At that time, Bin Laden was the head of the largest terrorist network, Al-Qaeda, and he advocated a total jihad, that is, with his thousands of ultra-armed soldiers, before he killed communists, but now he wanted to kill American infidels. But at that moment, what did the CIA do to calm things down? Nothing, in fact. No, they were toasting champagne because the USSR had withdrawn from Afghanistan. Yes, mission accomplished for the CIA; the communists had lost. Okay, half the Afghan population fled the country because they were martyred by the jihadists, but hey, we got rid of the communists. And so the CIA left Bin Laden alone until 1998. Why did they become interested in him again? Because at that time, Bin Laden made headlines with two attacks on two American embassies: those in Tanzania and Kenya. Blood and tears; the populations of the United States, Kenya, and Tanzania, in shock, still do not understand how such a savage attack could have happened. So the CIA woke up; they understood that they had perhaps fed the world's largest terrorist organization a little too much and that it was time to get rid of it. But at that point, another idea emerges: what if, instead of getting rid of him, they used him as a new pretext to occupy the Middle East? Yes, it's extremely twisted, but that's what Gary Schroen, a veteran CIA agent, admitted. Because from 1999 onwards, the agency had teams ready to intervene against Bin Laden, but they were all withdrawn. The reasons put forward today are that they wanted to avoid destabilizing the region and that it might have killed civilians. On the CIA's part, we don't really want to believe them, but everything suggests that Bin Laden became a reason to establish American bases throughout the Middle East. Even for this high-ranking French official, Jean-Michel Quatrepoint, it's bizarre: "American forces are there because Afghanistan has become a geopolitical aircraft carrier, stuck between a fragile and vulnerable Pakistan and Iran, which represents the threat, and that the objective of maintaining an army 10 minutes from Islamabad and Tehran is much more important than fighting against the Taliban." Yes, because there is a context. From 1991 onwards, there was no more USSR, no more communist threat; a new pretext was needed. But other even more disturbing elements support this theory.

In 2006, in Afghanistan, two courageous French journalists made a documentary about the ongoing hunt for Bin Laden, and the testimonies they gathered are truly shocking. Soldiers from the French and American special forces say they had Bin Laden in their sights several times between 2003 and 2004, but that the American command systematically refused them permission to fire. "We are going to learn that the French special forces had Bin Laden at gunpoint. It's true, I can attest to it. In 2003, in 2004, we indeed had Bin Laden in our sights. The shooter said, 'I have Bin Laden,' and the decision was made at Bagram, at American headquarters. The fact is that at that time, there was hesitation from the command." They are not alone in saying this; even Afghan warlords say that the Americans let Bin Laden escape. "This man participated in meetings with the Americans devoted to the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. According to him, the Bush administration itself did not wish to capture the head of Al-Qaeda. There are very, very historic relations, if you will; there are historic friendships between Bin Laden and the Americans." Between 1996 and 2005, more than ten requests for execution were sent to the CIA and the White House, and all were refused. So Bin Laden, far from being hunted, was spared by the Bush administration to use him as a scarecrow for its various military interventions. You're going to say, "Okay, fine, but then why was he killed in 2011?"

The world's number one public enemy, Bin Laden, after 10 years of pursuit, was found and killed. It is possible that what was sold to us as the hunt of the century could, in truth, simply respond to a political agenda. In the run-up to the 2012 presidential elections, Obama was severely attacked by his opponents for his softer approach to terrorism. He could have used this operation to prove that he was a bulwark against the terrorist threat. The death of Osama during the Abbottabad raid in 2011 strengthened Obama's image, but also that of the CIA. It was the agency that largely took the credit for having geolocated Bin Laden. Whether this theory is true or not, the CIA played the role of a criminal accomplice to Bin Laden. Its inaction after the Afghanistan war allowed the distribution of millions of weapons to all terrorist networks in the region and probably to the organization of the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001.

But if the CIA does indeed practice foreign interference, its interventions in American politics are also largely criminal. Kennedy, the assassination of an enemy of the CIA. One of the most terrifying mind control programs was carried out by the CIA on its own population. But before talking about the worst CIA conspiracy, we must address another one that changed the course of history, which is all the more terrible because it targets an American president.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 46. On Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, at 12:30 pm, the presidential motorcade was crossing the city center when the president's open-top car passed through Dealey Plaza. John Fitzgerald Kennedy received three bullets to the throat and head. Five minutes later, witnesses identified this man as the shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, a former soldier. Oswald was arrested an hour later at the Texas Theatre with a weapon on him and accused of the murder of the president and even that of a policeman. Interrogated by the police, Oswald firmly denied having shot anyone. The police were even disturbed by his attitude; Oswald seemed genuinely not to know what was happening to him. But the evidence was overwhelming: photos of him carrying the rifle that fired, his fingerprints on the rifle, and the testimony of dozens of witnesses. Less than 48 hours after his arrest, the state ordered his transfer to a more secure facility. And then, a dramatic turn of events: on Sunday, November 24, at 11 am, Lee Harvey Oswald was in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters when, while being escorted by two policemen, a man armed with a revolver shot him at point-blank range. An hour later, Oswald was declared dead. No trial was held to determine whether Oswald was indeed the assassin of President Kennedy. However, a commission was opened by Earl Warren, which would claim within a year that Lee Harvey Oswald was indeed Kennedy's assassin, that he acted alone, and that he was motivated by his pro-communist ideology. That's the official version. Do I believe it? No. And besides, almost nobody believes it. Polls have been conducted in the United States for about 50 years, and 80% of Americans still believe that Kennedy was the victim of a conspiracy. Okay, I agree that Americans are not a reference, but in this case, there are a lot of elements that don't fit with the Warren Commission's version. So what's the problem precisely?

First, the timing of the shots. The Warren Commission claims that Oswald fired three bullets in 8.4 seconds with a Mannlicher-Carcano bolt-action rifle from the sixth floor of the building. The problem is that ballistics and weapons experts estimate that it is not improbable, but almost impossible, to reload, aim, and fire three times with precision in such a short time with this weapon. The best army shooters have a hard time reproducing this feat, even under ideal conditions. Okay, second problem: the trajectory of the bullets. According to the Warren Commission, a single bullet would have caused separate wounds on the president and Governor John Connally, who was right next to him. The bullet would have passed through the president's neck, shoulder, chest, wrist, and Connally's thigh. The problem is that the trajectory of this bullet defies the laws of physics. Governor Connally himself always maintained that he had been hit from a different angle than Kennedy, contradicting the official version. With that alone, the theory of the lone gunman falls apart. But wait, there's worse. Dozens of witnesses present reported having heard more than three shots and claimed that they did not all come from the building. Acoustic experts found audio evidence proving that a second shooter was present. Kennedy was shot by at least two people. But why? To understand, we must retrace our steps. Let's look at President Kennedy's politics.

Kennedy became president at a time when the Cold War almost became a nuclear war. It was he who had to manage the Cuban Missile Crisis, where, by a few minutes, nuclear bombs were almost launched on New York and Moscow. And if he got into such a quagmire, it's because the CIA was, in fact, running wild in almost all its interventions. In 1961, the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion, supported by the CIA, made Kennedy lose his temper. He told them, "This is no longer possible; we must stop." He fired General Charles Cabell, Deputy Director of the CIA, Richard Bissell, head of the CIA's clandestine operations, and above all, Allen Dulles, director of the agency for more than eight years, then almost all his close associates. He declared that he wanted to "break the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it," in his own words. In addition, in 1963, the elections were coming up, and he was almost certain to be re-elected. Moreover, he had begun a peace process, a rapprochement with Cuba, and military disengagement in Vietnam. In short, his policy meant the death knell of the CIA. But without even realizing it, he had made himself mortal enemies. Oh yes, a little detail: among the eight people who made up the Warren Commission was Allen Dulles, yes, the CIA director that Kennedy had fired two years earlier. But wait, let's go back a little further. Who was Lee Harvey Oswald? Oswald was a young marine, a good soldier, who left the army to settle in the USSR at the age of 20. He returned in 1962, at the age of 23, and the following year, he assassinated the president of his country. It must be admitted that this trip to the Soviet Union gives a motive for his pro-communist ideas. However, a detail: according to former CIA agent Antonio Veciana, Oswald met David Atlee Phillips, a CIA official, in September 1963 in Dallas, two months before the assassination of President Kennedy. But it gets even better: new documents were declassified in 2017, and among them is one that I will put in the description: the minutes of Richard Helms, director of the CIA. Here is the exchange that can be read:

The interrogator, Mr. Belin, says: "The last part of my interrogation concerns these alleged charges that the CIA participated in the assassination of President Kennedy. At the time of the Warren Commission, you were Deputy Director of Plans. Is that correct?" Richard Helms replies: "I believe so, yes, sir." Mr. Belin: "Is there any information related to the assassination of President Kennedy that would in any way show that Lee Harvey Oswald was in some way a CIA agent?" And the answer: No answer. The declassification stops there. They didn't give the rest. Go and check for yourself; it's the last page of the document. So was Lee Harvey Oswald a CIA agent? For many, there is no doubt. A rather dubious last act: James Angleton, head of counterintelligence, ordered in 1973 the mass destruction of documents relating to Oswald. Curious. Beyond the profile of a soldier who could meet the criteria for recruitment, the destruction of documents, and especially the links he had with CIA members just before the assassination, it does suggest that Lee Harvey Oswald could be an agent. But what is even more disturbing is his assassination. How could an armed man have ended up in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters? Jack Ruby, Oswald's assassin, justified his act by saying that he was an admirer of the president and that he could not bear that the president's family should bear the weight of a difficult trial. It's hard to be more unconvincing. But it gets even darker when we look at his profile. Jack Ruby, whose real name was Jacob Rubinstein, was part of the very powerful Jewish mafia in Dallas at the time. In the early 1960s, marked by the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy wished to curb the proliferation of nuclear bombs, but one country remained at the forefront to exert pressure: Israel. Kennedy's correspondence with President Ben-Gurion threatened to no longer support Israel if they continued their efforts to produce the atomic bomb in the Dimona laboratories. Kennedy's opposition to Israel's acquisition of the nuclear bomb was perceived as a stab in the back by many members of the Jewish community in the United States and in Israel, who considered Kennedy an enemy. We are still in speculation, but if all these elements are not incriminating enough, we can conclude this affair by mentioning Lyndon Johnson, Kennedy's vice president. This is what Lyndon Johnson's mistress declared 28 years later: "Lyndon was furious. He told me, 'At the end of the day, the Kennedys will never bother me again.' It wasn't an idle threat; it was a promise. He knew what was going to happen. At New Year's, I asked him again about his responsibility, telling him that he was telling everyone that his name was in the affair. I said, 'People in Dallas are starting to talk; they say you're responsible. It was Jack Ruby who mentioned your name.' Johnson flew into a huge rage. He hit the wall with his fists; he sometimes did that. He told me that it was impossible, that he wasn't responsible, but that it was the 'fat cats,' as he called them—the Texan oil magnates and the people from the CIA." Given that the CIA has been an expert in false-flag attacks since its creation, it has made others responsible for assassinations. This was the case during Operation Ajax in Iran against Mossadegh, in Guatemala against President Jacobo Árbenz, and in Cuba against Castro, although the operation failed. Why wouldn't they have used exactly the same techniques against a president on the verge of shutting down the agency? If the CIA really assassinated Kennedy, the legitimately elected president of his own country, it speaks volumes about the esteem they have for the American people and for all the peoples of the world. But let's go back just 30 seconds to Oswald, one of Kennedy's assassins. If he did indeed shoot Kennedy, why didn't he properly prepare his escape afterwards? And above all, what was the CIA so afraid of to have him assassinated after his capture? And where does this stupor come from that the police described—his total incomprehension when he was arrested? A priori, all this would prove that Oswald was not the shooter, but given the evidence, there is reason to doubt. Either he is amnesiac, but how could he have forgotten in the space of an hour that he had shot the president of his country? The theory seems completely stupid, and yet, when you discover the next part, there is a strong chance that this theory will not leave you indifferent.

[Musique]

Project MKUltra. If you had to remember one CIA project, it's this one. Not only because it is the most terrifying, the most inhuman, or the most murderous of their projects, but especially because it is a revolution in the understanding of the human mind. MKUltra dates back to 1953, but its origins are older. The project's youth dates back rather to the Second World War. Remember Allen Dulles, the OSS agent who negotiated with the Nazis? Well, at the end of the war, Allen and his OSS buddies, you know, had the mission of recruiting and finding out where the Nazi scientists were. Well, they didn't recruit one or two Nazis; they recruited about 2,000. This recruitment has a name: Operation Paperclip. Listen to what Major General Leslie Groves, US Army, declared at the end of the Second World War: "The discovery and occupation of German scientific and industrial establishments revealed that we are alarmingly behind in many areas of research." One of the heads of the so-called best army in the world declares that, in fact, they are behind. You understand better why it was inconceivable for the Americans to let the USSR seize the scientists. And, as part of Operation Paperclip, they made very good picks. The most famous of all is Wernher von Braun. If his name rings a bell, it's because he is not just anyone. This man went from a ruined country to being the head of NASA. And you want to know more? He was head of NASA at the time of the Apollo 11 mission, that is, the fact of bringing humans to the moon. All this is very good, but among the thousands of scientists brought back to the United States, there were some dubious characters. This guy, for example, Dr. Conrad Schäfer. Conrad conducted experiments on prisoners at the Dachau concentration camp. When he arrived in Germany, it was a one-way trip for the prisoners. He experimented with hypothermia and infectious diseases on the detainees. Among the scientists brought back, there was also this one: Kurt Blome, head of chemical weapons for the Third Reich and a precursor in bacteriological weapons. We are talking about doctors accused of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials. But the following year, these same doctors would commit the same crimes, or perhaps worse, but for the benefit of the CIA. So when it's for the good guys, it's not a crime, no, it's documentation; they are documenting. In short, Operation Paperclip was a resounding success for America, especially for the CIA, which, as early as 1949, created a secret section of psychological research. The first two projects were Bluebird and Artichoke, supervised by Kurt Blome, the Nazi who joined the CIA. Their objective was to find a protocol to make spies and communist soldiers tell the truth when they were caught. Some were fans of the good old methods, medieval torture, quick and brutal. But they realize that torture is not very reliable, and that the tortured person is ready to say almost anything to make it stop. So they have to innovate. And that's where the Nazi scientists intervene, because they performed in this area. This is how the New York Times described Operation Artichoke: "The development of any method by which we can obtain information from a person against his will and without his knowledge."

As usual, when the CIA has a mission, it goes all out. From 1950 onwards, it invested millions of dollars in nearly 80 prestigious institutions, including universities, hospitals, prisons, and even psychiatric hospitals. The CIA's first obsession was drugs, particularly LSD and other hallucinogenic mushrooms and mescaline, nicknamed the truth serum. Then, everything passed: prisoners of war, SDF, volunteer civilians, but also involuntary ones. But the ones they liked best were the mentally ill, why? Because they overreacted to the treatment and seemed much more manipulable. To the point where a new idea germinated in the scientists' minds: the goal was no longer to make them tell the truth, but to make them act without them being aware of it. Before getting into the heart of what is Project MKUltra, we must first answer a rather twisted question: how is it possible to imagine such things? Well, in truth, you will be surprised, but the number of great doctors who validated the project 100% and tested it on their own patients is enormous. Dr. Ewen Cameron, president of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. William Sargant, director of the Department of Psychiatry in London. We will talk about these two later. But the worst is undoubtedly this guy, Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, scientific director of the CIA and also nicknamed the "House of Horrors." You will quickly understand why. In 1951, Officer Bill Buckley, a brilliant 23-year-old soldier, was recruited by the CIA. His first mission was simple; it consisted mainly of assisting Dr. Gottlieb in his research. Except that this passage will mark him for life. One autumn morning, he had his first appointment with Gottlieb in his office, and Bill was very impressed because the doctor had the entire top floor of a building. But when Bill arrived in the office, he hallucinated. All around him were piles and piles of jars containing mushrooms, powders, but also animals. Dr. Gottlieb told him not to worry; he explained that his scientists brought him from all over the place all the animals, all the mushrooms, all the plants that could alter human consciousness. During this time with Gottlieb, Bill participated in the experimentation of mixtures of the most powerful hallucinogenic products of the time. "You've taken too much, old man; you've taken too much." The objective was clear: to modify the perception of reality of the guinea pigs. This cocktail of drugs was given to nearly 23 American medical centers and large universities, of course without informing the consumers. The purpose of these experiments was to produce a biological arsenal that would allow brainwashing, essentially to make a person so crazy that they could be reprogrammed. The concept of reprogramming an identity might still seem vague to you, but you will quickly understand. In 1953, Gottlieb had only one obsession: to make a person totally amnesiac because he was convinced that being able to format a human mind is like engraving something on a disc; one could then engrave a new personality on it. And it is on this basis that MKUltra was born. MKUltra stands for Mind Control Ultra—M for mind, and K for control. Except that control in English is spelled with a C. To explain this change, there are two theories. The first is that MC Ultra would sound like MC in English, like Mac, so it wouldn't correspond with the pronunciation of control represented by a K. But another theory says that K comes from German. Indeed, control is spelled with a K in German. So to honor the paternity of the various scientists of the Third Reich who allegedly worked on the project, they would have called control with a K. The research for the project will take place in Europe, but especially here, in the research center of Fort Detrick. Project MKUltra was a huge undertaking, and it is comparable to the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the nuclear bomb. In terms of money invested, MKUltra represented 10% of the CIA's annual budget—a colossal sum that was used to fund a place, the Fort Detrick research center. And then, like Los Alamos in the Manhattan Project, Fort Detrick became a small autonomous town where military secrecy was absolute. The Oppenheimer of Fort Detrick, you are beginning to know him: Dr. Sidney Gottlieb. Except that Gottlieb's nuclear bomb would not be an explosive bomb, but a human being entirely reprogrammed under MKUltra, capable of acting without being aware of it. Said like that, it's a science fiction film; it seems totally crazy. But listen to what this declassified report from 1953 says: "It has..."
