Today's episode of the history of computer games is about Civilization: Call to Power. This is a turn-based strategy game in the Civilization style, but a little different. It was released in the far year of 1999, and I have to say it is a very successful clone of Civilization. So let's see what this game is about.
I will start a new game in single-player mode, and first, I will have to choose my empire. I will play with the Vikings. The difficulty should be Emperor. Well, I think I'm good at this game, so I'm playing on hard difficulty. The map is huge; it can be gigantic too.
In the rules, I can turn on and off pollution or bloodlust, which will not restart defeated civilizations. I think now I will choose bloodlust. Now, pollution in this game can be played because there is a wonder that clears all the pollution. I remember I loved this Civilization, and I can customize the map, such as whether the climate should be wet or dry, warm or cold, and how many oceans should be there, whether it's islands or continents.
I'm playing with many goods, so let's see. Okay, my first location, like always, I start with a settler. My starting location looks good; there's a river, and there are forests around, but I don't see any trade goods. Trade goods give a lot of gold, so it is good to have one, but I will have to risk and make that first city there. Well, I got a resource; I wish it was on the river, but it's okay.
Now, right-clicking on the city, I can see my worker. What is he doing? Now he is working the river and the hill. If I place him on the river and the wood, it will give me 25 production, which is quite better, but only five gold and ten food. Let's see that resource; it gives 15 gold. The resources give gold, the trade goods, so I will need a lot of production to make my first unit.
That is how it should be. In the future, I can terraform these tiles around the mountains—actually, everything—but in this game, terraforming and tile improvements go differently. It goes with public works. Now, if I have enough public works, like in real country ruling, I can place farms, mines, roads, and other things. But to have public works, I have to subtract them from my production.
Now, here it is. I will make 10% of production go for public works, so in a few turns, I will have 200 for my first farm. Let's see what else I can do in Civilization. I can change the workday; now it is 10 hours because I'm a nice ruler. I like to make it four hours, but not yet. Now, reducing the working hours will raise happiness. Also, if I increase the wages, a lot of gold will go for the population, and happiness will increase.
I can see the science will move, and the resources are the food for the people. More food for the people means more happiness. Okay, science and gold are here, and on that government, I cannot make more than 50% for science. All right, so let's see. I can maximize good. Now, here is the labor. I have one worker; I can make him an entertainer or a scientist. Now, of course, I will need the food.
Let's see if he's an entertainer. There is no worker, right? So I'll move him back, and I want him on the forest, and we're going to production. After civilizing, we have production queries, so I can make a query. Now, the first thing that I want to do is start construction on a warrior, and then settler construction will start.
Now, if I see in the max TP, my next population will be available in seven turns, so I will have my settler after the city is at size two because if it is one, it cannot produce a settler. We need at least two populations to make a settler. Of course, the warrior will be needed to explore what is going on around the city. After I have some trade goods, I can trade. I can see happiness, pollution, and crime.
All right, now that everything is set, I can end my turn. If there are no units to move, the end turn will glow green. My public works are increasing, building complete, and here is my first warrior. Now, in these civilizations, we can move on rivers with half the movement cost, so I will try to utilize this, and I'm looking for those.
I have to be careful if there are any barbarians. I have researched bronze working. Bronze working—I don't have videos; well, I have the disc, but I have excluded this. So the next thing is domestication. If I research it, I can make a marketplace and mounted archers. Mounted archers move with two movement points; they're quite good.
In the first round, I found gold. Now, in this civilization, I can increase production, but it costs a lot of gold. Now that settler needs 1,600 gold; it's too much. Okay, how is public works? It's okay. Well, I crossed the river. I have to say I don't like this terrain; there are a lot of swamps. Now, where will I make my next city? Let's check the area.
Okay, now I want to utilize the land, so I will try to make every city four squares away. This is so—I cannot reach the shore, but I want to get the crocodile. I have two crocodiles to the top, but there are a lot of swamps around. Let's see what's there. Ah, gems! Interesting.
Okay, I will directly start the next settler. I need a lot of towns. Construction started, so let's continue. Okay, no, actually, I have to go down. I can get these two rivers. I think this is where my next city will be. Well, it will not be on the shore, but I will make a town on the shore eventually.
Okay, let's do this again. I want the production, but because there are no rivers, it's only zero gold and 20 production. This is where I will make my first bank. I need defense. Construction started. This civilization is not like the latest one; I need to protect my cities.
So what to research next? St. working? Okay, that will take 10 turns; it's okay. Let's research it. It will allow me to create the Sphinx. Construction started. Now, what is that settler doing? I still cannot buy it. Purchase. Okay, let me make a mounted archer. Construction started, so I can explore more.
Blood shall run. Building complete. It's too cold. Blood shall run. Let's move a little with this bank. Blood shall run. Ah, what are these mountains? Building complete. Uh-oh, there's a rival civilization. Okay, I cannot purchase that. Uh-oh, can't reach the city. I think my starting location is not good.
Settler construction started. Awaiting orders. I'm on my way. Okay, he didn't enter. Shall run. Let's meet them. Okay, so that water hides somewhere, right? Okay, building complete. This is where the next town will be, shall run, and it will be. He got one river, but that's it. Now, the swamps are pretty bad; I shouldn't build cities near swamps before I get terraforming.
All right, another settler construction started. Let's make defense. I need something here too. Construction started. And while the green man is in green, I can move units. Shall run. Well, I usually find units complete these ruins, but not this time.
Okay, time to make the next settler. Construction started for this. Shall run. Blood shall run, and I can upgrade my—this is only cosmetic. Shipbuilding—will I need to go in the water? Oh, I found a silent religion. How nice!
Bir shall run. Building complete. I need to check this. Uh-oh, that's a barbarian. Barbarians! Let's find the enemy. Let's find the enemy. Blood shall run. Well, the warrior is now on very low health. Shields up! Check that nothing. So I wait. That was a misclick. Building complete. Shields up!
Okay, third settler. Well, maybe I can—I have to restart the game. This is not a good location to start. Well, there is a river, but let's see what the game looks like in advanced years. Well, I have 300 public works, so let's place a farm to see how that works. Now I choose the hammer and the farm. There it is. Now it is 51.
Next turn, it needs—well, two turns to complete. This is 515; it gives five food. Okay, I will load a game to see how this works in the future. All right, let's see what that good be. Okay, this is a game where I have advanced.
Well, let's see. I have entered here one of the latest eras. When I'm entering new eras, the city icon changes, and let's see there are a lot of swamps here. This is how to clear them. Terraform. I will make them to be plains, grasslands, and just place this, but I'm out of public works.
Let's make more public works. Also, roads are made with public works. Here are the workers working. Let me check. So I have this whole island. There are rival civilizations to the top and trade routes. The Canadians have shown an interest in your offer of crafts from Olympia. Let's agree. I have a lot of gold now.
All right, more trade routes go, and I have an empty building queue. Now, I want to check my status with other civilizations. Diplomacy. Okay, I am at war with the Jamaicans and the Turkish. Well, what I see is they are on different islands. Ah, here I'm attacking a town, Bluefield Bay.
Well, Jamaicans are cool. Why am I at war with them? Okay, so did I make—okay, I bank and factory. See what else? Right, I have made the building query, and I will wait for a while for this terraforming to complete. Also, I see I have two armies now.
What is amazing in the Call to Power civilization is that I can make groups of nine units. Here I have only artillery. I think I use it for bombarding, and the other group is artillery and tanks. The tanks are for the front line, and the artillery is for the second line to fire up.
Here is the line that I want. Let's go. Uh-oh, there are towns. Okay, I need a building for missing houses. All right, well, I need that cedral, so to purchase, first I will purchase the publishing house and then the cathedral.
Let's see how transmission is secured. How battles work? I will attack. The name it! We're there. Wait, uh, G play. Battle view is on. Why didn't I see the battle? I will check later. Okay, one, two, light the fuse. Not enough movement, so I got a city. What to do here?
It's better to be construction query. Construction started. Tempo construction started. Construction started. Also, in the next version, I think I construction started. Construction started. Okay, let me see. I need to make a transport somewhere here. There we are. Construction.
So I have to move units to the next continent or island. Where are my roads? Okay, now, okay, let's see. These listening posts—they reveal—they are something like scouting, right? It is good to place them on tiles that are not workable, like this one here, so I can see what's going on.
So this is where I can place another listening post. When it's complete, it will reveal this location. The next style is the radar. I don't need it yet. No planes. The airbase is where I can place planes. Do I have good mines? Not yet. Let me place one of these.
I have two. Okay, the rest I want for MLS. This is better than the railroad. Okay, in Civilization, the railroad is the best road system connection system. We have MLS here. Where to place it? Let's connect these two cities, and my public works are done.
Building complete. What? Oh, pollution! Canosos? Where is that Canosos city? Oh, there it is. Now, base potion. Oh, oil refiner. What's that? I'm making micro defense. No, no, no, no. Something to clear pollution, please. Hospital, airport, recycling plant.
Construction started. Construction started. SDI, robotic plant. Construction started. Re-launcher. House of Freezing. Okay, there are a lot of buildings and a lot of wonders in this game. Okay, House of Freezing. What is that? Does the House of Freezing increase the city's gold output? Ooh, this is awesome.
Construction started for the Fusion Plant. Fusion Plant increases the city's production and reduces pollution. Okay, construction started. Those two constructions are complete. Also, Sparta needs House of Freezing. Construction started. Construction started.
Robotic plant will reduce pollution. Construction starting. Can we have a robotic plant and fusion plant? Okay, the aqua filters allow for larger cities by reducing overcrowding, so the cities can grow more than 20.
Okay, this MLS—why are they not connected? Well, they're not connected because I need first to make the terraforming, and then, okay, the forest. This will be my attacking army. I will send them. Well, the artillery cannot go through mountains, so they will need roads.
Fast and deadly. Transmission secured. Wow, without the roads, they cannot move. Do I have defense there? Maybe. Okay, let's move. I will make a defense machine gun. They are good defenders. Construction started. Building complete. Gunners, take aim!
What's that? Square the J. And let's bombard. Gunners, take aim! F to celebration. One is celebrating; others are rioting. And there's the cathedral. Let's purchase it. Building complete.
And I want—I have discovered digital encryption. Now we can have archaeologists, genetic tailoring, Dinur Park. That was a wonder of the world of goods. Your interface, Sorum, that was good. Sorum, square the chip. What is that ship here? Square the chip.
How are these roads doing? Terraforming. I don't want this swamp. I have to terraform it. That one too. This is forest. Okay, and my units are slowly going to Port Antonia. This is where I'm producing the transport.
I have gone to war with the Brazilians. Canadians and Brazilians are at war. All right, Carus is—ah, my cedral. Soon I will reach it. Square the G. If I can go there, there are MLS everywhere. Building complete. I just wait for them.
What happened? Ah, here. Now that the listening post is complete, I can check this. And what I see is that—wait, the Turkish got a town. Greeks with the Canadians present you with temporary peace. Okay, peace with Canadians. Crusade against Canadians? Not yet.
There is the cathedral. It will reduce unhappiness. My units, that ship, will be sleeping there. Oh, I cleared that, so let's make one. There's one building complete. All right, next sense. Life extension chip. Ooh, pollution!
Ah, I can no longer produce spice. Okay, this is empty. Well, let's build a wonder. The agency—I can build the globe at Star Ladder. Ah, this is interesting. The first version of Call to Power, this one, we can have space cities.
Let me try this. Construction started. It will take 32 turns to get it, but okay. How is production? H, maybe if I place a few mines. Okay, oh, I have the biggest mines. There's one. Okay, the forest will remain.
So what I need is a few hills where I will place more mines. What's that? Keep production. Now I want everything on production, please. 26 turns. All right. Ah, M is producing much pollution. Where is that town? There it is.
Okay, computer center in the field. Don't need this. Recycling plant. Construction started. Construction started. Okay, this will be for now. Meize empty. Construction started. Nuclear plant? Well, I will need the recycling.
Construction started. Construction started. Transit launcher in House of Freezing. Construction started. Construction started. Okay, we have another rioting town. MLS have gone to war with Incas, and Mongols have gone to war with Byzantines.
H, new civilization. Barbarian. Where are those Incas? Ah, I need a spy. Wow, there are too many towns. Okay, maybe I really need a spy or a lawyer or a diplomat. Let's make diplomats and see what is there on the top.
Corporate branch. I can steal gold from enemy towns. Ah, space plane construction started. War walkers? Well, let me make a walker. This is where I want it. I'll remove all the things. Wow, a lot of things are producing there, and I will make two war walkers.
Construction started. They are pretty good units. Huh? What I see is that the Turkish has a ship there. I will need some defending ships too. Well, a submarine. Construction started. Okay, the transport is here. The army is slowly moving down.
Okay, I think these new towns are connected now. Wait, I need—why you cannot enter? Ah, because they're full. Well, no place for that unit. I have to wait for the later connection. Building complete. It's still not there.
Okay, let's terraform stupid swamps. Don't need you. Okay, I'll purchase the marketplace again. Airport? Oh, why? Construction started. It helps with the riot.
Okay, another troop ship. Building complete. What next? Genetic tailoring? Ah, let me see that star ladder that I was making. This mine is ready. 40 production! Awesome! I want more hills.
Star L, 21 turns. Game pollution, pollution goals. Oh, permanent alliance? Well, I usually avoid alliances, and this is my new diplomat. I will try to go up with it.
Okay, this ship. Now I want a tank there. Load them up. And what happened with my war walkers? Ooh, too much gold. Okay, another tank. I think I can transport only four units. What's the cargo? Five? That is okay.
Another tank and artillery in the ship. W ready. Transmission secured. This is veteran F fuse. Okay, the rest go. Transmission secured. F and deadly. F and deadly in the—F and deadly. Hey, stay there. Where's the shot? Light fuse! Light the fuse!
So that artillery will rest. You will rest. There's a tank. Building complete. What are they doing there? Name it! Where they—okay, now I'm transporting five units. Load it up. This is the diplomat.
Oh, pollution! Ah, wait, I screwed that. Finally, the recycling plant. Okay, how to clear this pollution now? Well, apparently with terraforming. Damn it! I need a few mines to get that star ladder operational.
Now I want to attack the Turkish just to see how the combat works in civilization. Building complete. Wes ready. They are. I will go to take more units there. Right, nothing is building. Airport? Let's build. Construction started.
Oh, jichs! Yes! Peace with jichs. I like pie. We have a rioting town. Let's purchase the cedral. Building complete. Okay, Ares. All right, now the enemy has six units. I have five units there. This is two artillery and three tanks.
Load it up. Okay, where are my tanks? There's one. Load them up. Five of them. Brown player, huh? Let's see. Okay, I will not pay a sink. Great! Brazilians! Brazilians will give me 3,000 gold.
Agreed. Reling down. All right, 45 for now. And maybe I can create another wonder. Plus 10 gold for foreign trade. RS construction started. 41 turns. Building complete. More pollution! I have to focus on this.
How do I not let—see? Link will be available soon, but I want to spend this gold on the war walker. All right, okay, here. I need a tank. So, nine units. Four. Okay, this four. Allure. W ready. Load it up.
Now I will use to move the war walker. Building complete. Square the jib. Name it! We're there. Okay, I have a full army composition of nine units. Okay, let's destroy the one. And here is how it—wait, why are the artillery on the first line?
Maybe this is because tanks also have ranged attack. Load them up. Okay, the war walker. Oh, I wanted to use these to punch in corporate branches to show them how they work.
Okay, everything here is connected. That transport did its job. Building complete. They're firing range. Transmission secured. And now let's get this. So the artillery is firing from the rear line, but well, I have a superior army and 13.
Okay, I will just—building complete. Turns to check the star ladder. Conclude with this preview. Building complete. They have t—where's my war walker? Name it! We're there.
Let's retreat a little and wait for this. Building complete. Building complete. W ATT best place. But there, ah, he's good, isn't he? Isn't she? Name it! We're there.
Transmission secured. This is the voice of the war walker. Come on, say something. Ah, say something! F and deadly. Have to retreat. Ah, wait, this—no, I cannot.
All right, complete. Ah, he will run out of—well, the F. All right, star L. Six turns. Building complete. They're creating embassies. Name it! We're there.
How is my war walker doing? They're reducing me with bombarding. Okay, building complete. So artillery is gone. Now let me at him. There, the war walker said something. I can bombard him too.
What's going on with the star ladder? I can purchase it. Building complete. Okay, and there it is! You have bested allation. Your star ladder has been completed.
Now having the star ladder, I think now I have a city in space. Now space appears under the hammer, and this is my space city. It doesn't have production because I will need tiles—space tiles.
But I have farms. I can create a lot of space cities too. Well, this is Call to Power 1. In the next video, which should be next week, I will play or look at Civilization: Call to Power 2. There are no space cities there, but there are ocean cities.
So this is for now. Until new meetings, then.
