What is a Danish Folkehøjskole?
Actually, a Folkehøjskole is a boarding school with a particularly free form of education. You can find these high schools all over Denmark; there are almost 70 high schools in total.
Here, you can cultivate an interest you already have or try something completely new. You must be full 17 one and a half to go to a regular college or 16 years to a youth college. Most students attend after their youth education as a form of education or a springboard for further education.
At the colleges, there are neither exams nor grades, so you have time to immerse yourself in what you are passionate about. You can be challenged in many ways, with 300 subjects to choose from. You come to a school where you can test your talents by getting to know yourself: What am I good at? What are my abilities? What makes me happy?
It's a bit like an after-school program just for adults. You live, eat, have classes, and attend parties in the same place. This creates a close family relationship not only with the other students but also with the teachers and the other employees.
There is a special relationship between students and teachers at a college. There can be experts both among the teachers and the students. The students contribute their experiences, and they have an influence on the content of the teaching.
The daily teaching is structured and free at the same time. You are involved and learn all the time—yes, even in your spare time. There is plenty of space to develop your ideas and test your skills in the open workshops.
There are many new opportunities at the college. Some students become more clarified in relation to their choice of education as they get to test themselves academically. However, what you learn is not only something you can use later in a specific career context. You will meet a strong community, and you will develop personally.
What you learn, you will use for the rest of your life. At the college, the students are active and get to test their limits. They engage with each other and find the tools for change. Hopefully, after their time at college, they will be able to make a positive difference in society.
